So, I never write…read morereviews on Yelp. Actually I never write reviews period.But I had such a fantastic experience in Ace Hardware Brickman 18th and First Avenue that I must share. I went in to get some shelves for my apartment. I was greeted by an older gentleman, who not only got me what I needed but took the timeout. I mean really took the time to explain to me what to do. Which I needed. The staff friendly, well trained, and kind. A handicap woman came into Ace while I was there and I was watching from the corner of my eye. I must say there are good people out there. It might as well have been Michelle Obama the way the helped this lady. Their expertise are second to none. Very very educated in all aspects of hardware. I go to Home Depot ask them where can I find an angle grinder cordless they look at me like I have three heads or push me off on someone else. I shouldn't feel that way that I'm bothering them when asking for some service-be a human. Anyway screw Home Depot never get a penny when I can go to this first rate godsend on 18th and first.

When I brought it back and explained what happened, the manager, Yvette, plugged it in, ran it for a few seconds with nothing attached, told me it was "fine" and treated me like I was making it up. A drill motor running with no load won't catch an issue that only appears under load, and a brand new drill that smokes is a serious fire hazard. It was completely negligent of Yvette to tell me to continue using the drill and not accept it as a defective return. This creates both a liability issue for the store and a safety issue for me. I raised these concerns and she was dismissive the whole time. I ended up leaving, calling Ace's customer service line and getting them on a three-way call with the store. The phone rep was great and easy to deal with. Yvette only agreed to take the drill back because I'd ordered it online through Ace for pickup, which meant the rep could force the return. Otherwise I doubt she'd have budged. She gave the rep attitude too. After she hung up, the rep apologized to me for how rude Yvette had been. I went back to the store and the return went through, but even when completing the return, the cashier was openly cold. I asked how her day was going, and she just said "fine," flat and unfriendly, without looking at me. Because of this experience, this location has lost my business. I won't buy from a hardware store that doesn't seem to take seriously the safety of the tools it sells or how it treats customers who flag a problem. I've still got the invoice, the return receipt, and Ace customer support case number if the owner wants to look into it.

I actually look forward to dropping in to "my" neighborhood hardware store for the humdrum items every apartment dweller needs - like picture-hanging hardware, glue, twine, hardware floor products, rust remover..... but once i find the boring stuff I came for, the adventure begins! Cleaning products that I've never heard of proclaim miracles - and shit - they really are magical. I've often been inspired to commence apartment-wide DIY projects because of some nearly hidden products hanging from the ceiling or stashed behind kitchen wares. One such project was to hide or camouflage all the damn cables and electrical cords I had running in every room. I came across some cable-hiding kits here, and I was soon obsessed with the ingenious plastic tubing that covered the cords and cables but could be painted the same color as the walls in my apartment - thus making the miles of electrical cabling invisible! Lol. The guys who work here are awesome. Smart, hot, and good-hearted to a fault. There are quite a few reviews that mention the staff being glued to their mobile phones, but I swear, hand-to-God, I've never seen a single staff member use a cell phone at the store - they are too goddam busy working; cleaning, putting out new inventory of top-shelf electrical tools, all the while restocking the shelves with the never-ending demand for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and Tide laundry detergent at bargain- basement prices, and patiently and carefully explaining complex repair procedures to New Yorkers who have never even seen a hammer but are desperate to repair the giant depression in the wall that mysteriously appeared at last night's Birthday and Vodka Party!! I've…read moregone there many times to not only buy stuff but ask questions and get free advice from Bob, the guy who runs the place. Thankfully my apartment building is right next door. Bob seems to know something if not more than that about just everything. He also knows just about every contractor and building super in Hell's Kitchen, and has referred me to a few different people that I've hired to help me out. Screw Angie's List - just ask Bob (should I trademark that?). His hardware store has nearly everything you'll need for your home improvement projects, and, if it doesn't, he'll order it for you and it'll get there fast. His prices are better than Lowes and Home Depot and so is his service. I just wish they were open longer hours as they close promptly at 5pm and aren't open Sundays. Any contractor in the area knows that Garden Hardware is the place to go. Sure, Metropolitan Lumber & Hardware over on 11th Ave is much larger and has more stuff, but the people over there are seriously rude and most have no idea what they're talking about. More often than not, I find that the sales associates are not cross-trained so, if the product or solution you're looking for is not in the section they have been trained to oversee, you're left with the options of seeking out sales associates in different departments to tell your tale of woe multiple times or assume they don't carry what you need & leave.
