He made a key incorrectly for me so I went back and it was the same issue the second time. I then requested my money back and he completely lost control. Called me a f*****g B**** in front of my 9 yr old grand daughter. Said these words to me a couple of times. I had witnesses from the barber shop next door, and people standing outside. I called the cops who took over. At this point I was leaving a man standing outside said he had the same problem with him. I am a petite hispanic woman, and the person outside was a black man. Got locked out of our apartment. We called and were told that the service would be $95. We confirmed, just $95? No other charges? And we were told, "not unless it's some unusual kind of lock." The locksmith arrives, says the $95 is only the late night/weekend fee and that the whole thing (with new lock) will be, with tax $262.00. Cash only. There oughta be a law. I guess some people figure taking advantage of someone else's misfortune is an opportunity you just can't pass up. read more

I needed a lock changed on my front door and Dial sent someone very quickly. When I felt that the key didn't open the lock smoothly they returned again in a few hours and tightened Allen screws, and all was corrected. They were right that it had nothing to do with what they had done initially but fixed my issue...we will use this business again! read more

While they were very quick to respond to my request, I had some questions when it came to the person installing my new lock. I had locked myself out of my apartment afte losing my keys. While they were quick to the scene, the first thing that the technician did was drill the cylinder...after less than a minute of scoping out the mechanism, he went for the drill and proceeded to go in with full force. This is one of the things that I was always on alert for (a legitimate locksmith should go for the drill as a last ditch effort and should have the tools necessary to open any standard front door lock)...then once the lock was drilled I was then given the option of three different locks (a low, medium and high security option)...I received a final bill of $400! $400 dollars!!!!! I could have bought a new front door for that! They said it was a $65 dollar charge just to come out there! $400 on a Sunday in cash! I have the receipt to prove it...that is absolutely insane! Not sure why there are so many positive reviews...the prices they charge for drilling a hole through a deadbolt and replacing it are INSANE! $400 to drill hole in dead bolt and replace with a new standard deadbolt!! I recently had an issue with my door knob falling off and needed to get into my apartment. It was 7:30 on a weeknight and I didn't have much options finding a place that was still open. I'll give them credit for promptness and friendliness but that's where it stops. The guy came and assessed the door realizing that he would have to drill through deadbolt - he quotes me price $179. Seemed expensive but I just wanted to get in so I gave him go ahead. What he didn't tell me that it would be extra for a new lock until AFTER the deadbolt was ruined. Then he quotes me for a new "standard" lock that would cost $160. I basically had no choice but to agree otherwise I would have no lock on my door. When all was said and done it cost me nearly $400 just to drill through lock and have it replaced with a standard deadbolt that costs maybe $30 at hardware store. By this time I was not happy about price and knew I was getting ripped off big time so today I did some investigation and called around to a few other places to get a quote and they told me $150 - $200. BE ADVISED AND CALL SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU ARE LOCKED OUT OF APARTMENT!!! read more

I went to the business several times to get price quotes on a lock installation. First of all, no one was ever physically at the business. The same mail slipped under the door by the mailman was still on the shop floor every time I went there. Over a period of 3 weeks. I requested service by email. They didn't respond. A woman finally answered the phone after several calls over a three week period. I was trying to give the neighborhood store my business. She claimed they don't have price ranges or estimates. She said there is a $59 service fee and the locksmith will tell you how much the work will cost. It ended up costing $325, plus the service fee and tax. All I got was a $418 charge on my debit card and I'm still chasing down these people for a receipt. Above all of that, the technician was incredibly annoying. He argued with me endlessly about the kind of lock I was having installed. His complaints that the request was unusual and would be inconvenient to me was meritless. The whole experience left me with a very distrustful feeling about him, his work, and the business. They'd never have to worry about repeat business from me. read more

I've worked with Dial on a couple of home improvement projects and found them to be exceptionally professional, competent, and responsive. On the first project, I brought them several original lockets from my pre-war apartment, which they restored beautifully and made functional again (including new skeleton keys). More recently, I asked them to adjust a strike plate that wasn't working properly. After doing the work, they even lent me a couple of files in case the openings still needed further adjustment, asking just that I return them when we finished. I have been getting my keys and the occasional cylinder change from these folks for some years. Then I brought them a big job -- the entire mortice (knobs, deadbolt, etc.) had to be replaced on an ancient, heavily scarred apartment door with an existing cylinder. Dial installed some very solid and nice looking hardware and made it fit perfectly. It wasn't easy -- the installer spent 80 minutes working on my door -- but the installation was only a small fraction of the total price. I got my money's worth. Will keep coming here. read more

I'm a graduate student living off student loans, so when I arrived home from class to realize that I had forgotten my keys and my poor dog was whimpering to be let out, I called around to different locksmiths to see if I could get an affordable quote before I chose one. When I called Dial and asked how much it would cost to get me into my apartment, they told me $100. Seeing as that was about the same rate other places we were charging, I went with them because they were closest. 45 minutes later, the locksmith shows up and I verify with him that it will cost $100, as they told me over the phone. He responded that was $35 for the service call out there, and $95 to get in the apartment so in actuality, the cost was $130. Since he was already there, I saw no point in arguing, so I agreed to it. After drilling in my lock and reuniting me with my beloved and lonely dog, he asks me if I would like him to replace my lock... Confused, I ask him to clarify what he means. He then informs me that since he had to drill the lock, it is now broken, and it will cost me $155 to purchase and install a new lock on my door, bringing my grand total to $310 after tax! Now THIS is the type of thing you mention to a person BEFORE you break out the lock on their door! Once the lock has already been destroyed, what are my options? To live and sleep in an unlocked apartment and sacrifice my personal safety?! Or to cough up whatever funds are demanded for the sake of maintaining my security? As a young woman, I begrudgingly opted for the latter, but not before questioning why he failed to mention that extra cost beforehand, when I was specifically asking him how much this was going to cost me. He informed me that it was because sometimes they don't have the locks that people need and he didn't want to offer what he didn't have. I'm sorry, but you're there, staring at my lock, you know if you have it with you or not. It is extremely poor form to not be straightforward with a customer with what the overall cost of services will be, especially when they have asked directly and when their personal safety is on the line. To wait until after you have broken my lock to inform me that my anticipated cost is now more than double what you initially told me if I want to have a front door that locks is simply appalling. Perhaps next time someone asks for a price estimate, you could inform them of potential additional costs prior to putting them in a position in which these additions become personal safety necessities. read more

Instead of drilling the lock, Tony managed to extract the broken piece of key stuck in there and pick the lock, and the price was very reasonable for the work and effort he put in, and for how fast he worked. Nobody likes buying a new lock. It's a necessity, but you have to do it. That was on my mind when I called Dial Locksmith yesterday. This morning Leon came over and installed our new deadbolt. I can't be happier. Initially I was just going to get the jimmy-proof tumbler deadbolt, but for the extra money got the lockset with high security cylinder by Mult-T Lock. He also fixed our non-working second door lock, which had been jammed closed for more than 2 years. He got that working perfectly, so now we have 2 locks. All-in for the service call ($15) and installing the high-security lock ($249) we are pretty happy. Leon was really nice and there was no monkey shines. I invited them to put in a lock that it turned out they couldn't do so instead they just changed a simple cylinder lock. The work was fine, but they charged $130 (which they presented as a discount). Calling around several other locksmiths in the area I later discovered the standard price for a spiral lock was $95. It's not cool to take advantage of a situation like that. read more

We were locked out and told over the phone that the price range was $85-125. It was 2:30 in the morning, so we expected it to be more expensive, but once you're given a range, you expect the price to stay in the range. We also understand that there are different types of locks and some take a lot more effort than others. This was not the case for us. It was the most basic lock on an apartment door in New York City, just above the doorknob with the deadbolt not even turned over. The locksmith said nothing when he came in. We got up to our floor and he unlocked the door in under a minute. We asked what form of payment we can give him and he said it would be $220. We spent the next 10 minutes arguing to only get it down to $150 still well above the quoted price for the most basic lock there is. Absolute liars. Apparently a "service fee" is not included in the range. That service fee was $45. So AT MOST $125 and $45 is $170. Simple math. Not $220. read more

I called at 10 pm on a saturday night on the emergency number I was given by the NICE guy who came a year ago to change all my locks. This company charged me $1,000.00 to fix my locks in an emergency and the guy they sent out was VERY nice. This guy, the OWNER who answered the following #: 212-678-6260, was nasty, RUDE and couldn't be BOTHERED to help me. I suggest you spend your money elsewhere since the owner of this shop is a real jerk. I finally asked for his name since he was so incredibly rude, and he said, "My name is irrelevant" I told him I didn't appreciate him being so rude since he took my $1,000.00 before which was a rip off from what Ive been reading on these reviews. THAT didn't even straighten out his crappy unprofessional attitude. He said,"Listen you're calling at 10 pm ...blah blah blah. " (Yea, its 10 Pm you jerk, on a Saturday night when on your site, it says request a quote, replies within an hour. I simply called the emergency number THEY GAVE ME From before since my tenant had his key STOLEN and it was URGENT!! Sorry I ruined your TV show blaring in the background.)
