I was charged an exorbitant sum to change two locks, and regret choosing Metro Local Locksmith ($245 for deadbolt + $575 for a mortice lock.) On top of this, they wanted to charge a service fee. This was apparently the 'discounted' rate. I went with Metro as the were so highly recommended, and there were reviews that said they were 'reasonably' priced which made me question what the going rate was. After speaking to others, I realize I'd been had. I wish I'd read the 1 star reviews first which complain about being over charged. When I called to get a quote I was told they'd have to see and access what kind of locks we had first. In hindsight, I should have pushed further for a quote and sent a picture of my locks. read more

Ben is amazing. I cannot say enough good things about him and Metro. A week ago at about ten PM, I was talking on the phone to a very good friend of mine. I have known him for 55 years. Anyway, come to discover that he wasn't locked out, he was locked IN his apartment! His cell was barely working and his internet was down, so he needed my help to locate an emergency locksmith. I talked to Ben on the phone and he was so understanding and helpful. We settled on a price, which would include everything. I explained what was required (2 cylinder changes on a basement door that allows us access to our condo's common cellar area) and they were able to give me an accurate estimate on the phone. I'm not sure why the company chose to reply now (a year later) but to be honest, I'd be too scared to try your company again. Your worker followed up on my complaint to you by harassing me. Forget the excessive expense, the wasted time and shoddy work - the LAST thing anyone needs/wants is angry harassment from someone who knows where they live and may even have a key to their home. Honestly, I cringed looking at the doorknob he put on that started denting within days because, as I said in my first review, it was clearly the cheapest thing he could find and isn't even meant for front doors but I was too scared to say anything more. The harassment worked I guess. But I caution others, specially women, to think twice before using this service. read more

I paid $686 for the installation of a Junior Multi-Lock. The installation was prompt and efficient BUT I'm not a happy camper for two reasons: 1. When I called to ask what the price(s) would be, I was told about $300. Granted, I didn't specify that I wanted a Multi-Lock BUT I was not asked what kind of a lock was I looking to replace. This is something that Metro should know to ask before glibly giving out a price. I hired the company because of its good reviews AND the quoted price of approximately $300. 2. Expecting to owe about $300, I had cash on hand for the payment. Since it wasn't enough, I had to pay by credit card. That's when I was told there would be a 4% credit card use charge. Should I have been told about the surcharge in advance? I leave it to others' discretion. Some say Yes while others say No, it has become commonplace to add this extra charge. I had expected to pay cash in full, of course, so the matter would have been/should have been moot. Obviously, it wasn't. To Metro's credit, the manager agreed to waive the 4% extra fee when I started trying to figure out an alternative, non-credit card way to pay. I appreciated the consideration for which I give Metro a tip 'o the hat. Should there be a next time to replace a lock, I will check out prices in advance. My long-time, nearby locksmith moved. I should have called on his service which, because a truck and transportation is not required (it's still located reasonably nearby), is likely to have cost a great deal less for the installation of a new lock, Multi-Lock, (lower-cost) junior or regular. read more

In total distress, I couldn't open my home safe (to get my passport). Stupidly I didn't think to open the battery box to find corroded batteries that were blocking the opening mechanism. The at-least 40+ year-old lockset in my apartment door finally gave out, locking us inside! So I contacted Metro at about 7:45 AM and Ben got back to me within minutes. [During that time I got the door open.] Ben asked for photos of the door, lock, etc., which I texted to him. He got back to me with a very reasonable quotation, which included rekeying both locks (mortise & deadbolt) to work with the same key, and making a number of duplicate keys. Alas, the job was trickier than anticipated, since the old steel door was in poor condition and needed new holes drilled to fit the new equipment. But Owen was on top of everything, and managed to make the new equipment work perfectly and look as good as possible. I'm very pleased with the prompt, friendly, responsive, honest, responsible, and professional way Ben and Owen took on a nasty problem and made lemons into lemonade. Very glad to keep them in my address book for future locksmith needs. Plus they love dogs and have pledged to contribute $1 to the ASPCA for each job completed. I had a balcony lock that was mysteriously broken (I know it sounds crazy, but I swear, I don't have the details!!) and was looking for a locksmith to figure out why the lock wasn't working properly. I have never in my life been ripped off by an emergency locksmith, broken window repair, or car lock-out. Until Metro Local Locksmith. For folks who experience an emergency lock-out, beware of Metro Local Locksmith. They quote you $150, and $300 if they need to replace the lock. The locksmith came, barely took one look at the doorknob and said this is a $300 job and he "wouldn't be able to pick the lock without having to break the door because the doorknob is too close to the side of the door." Wait...what?! What kind of B.S. is this?! Unfortunately, I was panicking because I had my medication inside and needed to take it immediately. This guy literally took 2 minutes to replace the doorknob, and then took his $330, after tax, and ran. As a community college student who is renting the bedroom of a family she doesn't know, this locksmith sure took advantage of me. He took advantage of a vulnerable person and situation. I felt so cheated and dirtied by this experience. Word to the wise: learn how to pick your own locks and worst comes to worst, call ANY OTHER LOCKSMITH THAN METRO LOCKSMITH. They WILL lie to you, and cheat you out of as much money as they can get. This company had me lose a little bit of faith in humanity. Update: following Ben's comment below. I'm going to clarify that it IS possible to pick locks, but the locksmith took ONE look at the lock before deciding he couldn't do it. It wasn't even a smart lock. He didn't even TRY to pick it once. If that doesn't say money grab, I don't know what does. Don't let Ben's lackadaisical attitude fool you. They'll quote you a bullshit price to lull you in, but it's a classic bait-and-switch. It happened to me. I lost my keys while commuting to and from school. The keys to my building, my apartment, and my mailbox were not the issue, as my supt was able to replace them. The issue was that I also lost keys to my safe, and I had no alternative copies. I had no choice but to call a locksmith to have the safe opened. The locksmith was honest with me, and told me that the safe would more than likely be unusable afterward. I was fine with this, and we set an appointment. The appointment was the same day, in the evening time. The locksmith came to my place, got my safe opened, and squared me away in less than 30 minutes. The payment was hassle-free as well, I was able to pay with credit card. The tech was a nice guy, and even though there was a significant language barrier, the guy worked very efficiently. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade. My friend and I were having the worst day. We were up late, got little sleep and then both had early meetings. My friend who was staying with me had to leave first and tried to do so while I was still asleep. Then, after struggling with the door a bit, she woke me up and said, "sorry, but I think something is wrong with your door". Annoyed, I got up and thought she didn't know how to unlock it, but then I realized, nope she was doing everything right, we were stuck! Freaking out we called Metro Local Locksmith and EZ showed up right away, he moved quickly, was funny and explained what he was doing as he did it, which I appreciate. A new door handle was installed and off we went in time to make it to our meetings. Then, surprise! I get home and realize like an idiot, I left the key to the new doorknob inside, yep, you heard me correctly. Twice in one day. My friend and I had massive headaches and were trying to laugh, but were almost in tears. We called Metro and spoke to the owner Ben who couldn't have been more compassionate. He rushed over and gave us an insanely fair price. He also told us he had dealt with people who had locked themselves out more than twice in one day. Also, they are great with cats. Both EZ and Ben couldn't have been sweeter to my cat Roux. This is all to say, whether you lock yourself out once, twice or even four times in one day you should be calling Metro. Most of the numbers just kept ringing, some even said they'd call us back, a lot of them quoted prices that made me flip my shiz. So please: If you're ever locked out of your house, locked inside your house, locked inside your bathroom, in your car, in your wherever, CALL BEN AT Metro Local Locksmith: 1-877-LOCKS-20. He was amazing. He came quickly, he quoted a fair estimate over the phone, he was professional, he was quick. Did I mention that he was professional? Did I mention he was quick? My housemate and I were stuck outside of our apartment door at 10:30pm on a Saturday night because our lock decided to quit on us. He came, assessed the situation, took a drill and drilled through our lock, noting that the lock was old and effed up. He replaced the whole lock and was so calm and professional about it. He then wrote a detailed explanation of what happened on our receipt, just so that we could show our landlord to prove that the lock was old and needed to be replaced (all so that we could get reimbursed for it). Seriously, call Ben. I promise you won't regret it. From the moment he picked up my call on the 2nd ring and asked me, "How are you doing this evening?", I knew he was the consummate professional. I had a very good experience w/ Metro Local Locksmith. I have what seems to be a unique mortise-style door lock. I wanted a smart lock and I ended up purchasing one that wouldn't fit (this was explained to me on my first communication w/ Metro via Yelp). Ben patiently walked me through their recommendations given my situation, and showed me which locks they recommend. I ended up purchasing one they recommended. They quoted me the price for the installation, and also recommended I change out my existing cylinder as well with a more secure "Mul-T-Lock". We ended up having to reschedule our first visit due to building rules that I wasn't aware of, but on the next possible day Izzy came out and completed the install for us, and he did a great job. We have a metal fire door and he had no issues drilling the necessary holes to install our new smart deadbolt, which now just sits above the existing door handle we already had (which now works as a passive door handle, which we can lock when we want for extra security). Anyway, great experience, friendly and patient guys, and efficient workers. Would definitely recommend them! read more

I was so irked by them and their ridiculous pricing that I did not let them replace my knob lock after they destroyed it. Instead, I searched on Yelp, and decided to give Metro Local Locksmith a try. Ben came the day day I called, actually 1.5 hours after I called, and he replaced my door knob and lock in 30 minutes or less. He was very polite, helpful and efficient. His prices are also extremely fair and reasonable. I am hoping to never have issues with my lock again, but if I do, I'm definitely calling Metro Local Locksmith again to save the day!
