I'll preface this in that for being a lock smith they have odd business hours. Meaning, I'm not entirely sure when they're open. I feel like they close fairly early. So don't expect it to be past 5-6pm. And they are INSANELY expensive. I want to chalk it up and say its just Manhattan. I need to expect this. But I don't think I've ever spent more than $2-3 per key on keys before in my life up until this point. Here, they charge you or at least they charged me $10 a key. Plus tax and a surcharge for using credit. So I paid about $34 to have a set of keys copied. I've also had to do this as an emergency more than once because there are no other lock smiths nearby and it just simply needed to get done. Went to have keys duplicated for my brother's new apartment. At Home Depot they told me that they don't do "Medico" or "Corbin Russwin," keys. They suggested I go to the locksmith at 7th Avenue near 22nd Street. Went there. The person at the counter attempted to make the keys. The person asked me if the "Medico" key is for an elevator saying something to the effect that their blanks are not exactly like the Medico key I handed them. But they made the keys and I went to see if the keys worked at my brother's apartment. The ones for the deadbolt lock did not. Next day went back to SOS Locksmith. There was a different person at the desk. I explained how I bought two copies of two different keys, and the "Medico" keys just do not fit into keyhole of the deadbolt lock. The person behind the desk said that the keys are all the same. No reason why they would not work, and furthermore, it is a cost to the shop to make another set of duplicate keys . (Wouldn't it be a cost to me to keep the keys even if they don't work?). I told the person behind the desk that if I could show to him that the duplicate keys do not work, I would, but would he come with me several blocks away to the building where the deadbolt lock is? He refused to listen and just insisted that the duplicate and original keys are all the same and asked me if I was sure I had the right keys, and was I sure whether I used the right amount of pressure in inserting the key in the keyhole? I replied that I tried everything I could but the duplicate keys do not go in the keyhole. I then said that maybe it is best not to take a chance, and to just refund my money because making other duplicates may mean that I would only have to come back, and it is an inconvenience to me since it is Saturday, the store is closed on Sunday and I would have to wait until Monday, and I do not live nearby. Even if I were to come back later in this very day it is also a hassle, but the person behind the desk did not listen and said that he is not arguing with me (he actually was) but only telling me how it is, and maybe one of his employees who made the keys the previous day might have made an error, but the store does not give refunds when keys fail once, a customer has to have the keys re-done and then if they fail a second time, then the customer can get a refund. So the person behind the desk made duplicate keys for me. I had to go back to the building in which I had to try the keys, and I actually took the precaution of using my cell phone to video-record myself trying to use the duplicate keys . The keys did not work. I called the store and told them that the duplicate keys did not work. The person over the phone who probably was a different person from the one at the desk I dealt with earlier, just said that the store is open until 6 PM. I had to go back out several blocks to the store. I had other things to do. It was a hot day, and I am past middle age, but no use waiting until Monday to do this. When I entered the store a different person was at the desk tending to customers. This other person was more cooperative in trying to be of help but I stated that I have a video on my cell phone showing how the duplicate keys did not work. The other person behind the desk said that there is no need to see the video and that he himself was not at the desk earlier, but he wants to resolve the issue. He asked me something about whether I tried the keys in 'this" building (meaning the building the store is part of). I told him that the building I had to try the keys in, is located at near 42nd Street . Then the person told me that the original "Medico" key actually is of a type that only the building management that gave it to me, can provide a duplicate of. My money was refunded. This is an abbreviated account. It seems to me that the person who kept telling me that the duplicate keys are all the same, was being hard headed and it actually does not matter if the keys "are all the same." It does not matter if the same machine was used to make them. It does not matter if a certain kind of blank is used to make duplicates for the original key. It seemed that the guy kept disparaging me and trying to make it seem as if I am some malcontent idiot who has absolutely nothing to do but waste my time and waste his time by coming into the store and just complain. The fact is that the duplicate keys, alike or not, did not work. No reason for me to make that up. I cannot say that I would recommend that others go to this place. I had read reviews on Google and Yelp! There are a good amount of positive reviews and I hoped I could be among those but it turned out otherwise. BY the way, I am notorious for giving bad reviews to businesses on Google, Yelp! Trustpilot and certain others. I also give good reviews where they are due. read more

This is my first experience getting keys duplicated and I had a good experience! I have no idea how much key duplication is normally supposed to cost but the prices felt reasonable to me. When I walked in the store was empty, the service was friendly, and they were able to help me immediately. I got about 10 keys duplicated and the worker did it quickly and on the spot. All of the keys worked and I would come back if I needed more keys duplicated. read more

Called them at 2 in the morning to have them help me with a lock. Guy on the phone said that they would send someone over in 20 minutes. 40 minutes later, I call them back and get no response. Next morning, still nothing heard from the business. Absolute terrible service would not recommend. Wish I had read the other reviews. read more

Was locked out, old employee had the only key. S.O.S came and swapped for another high security cylinder. The quotes I got elsewhere were ridiculous. Everybody told me I had to replace the entire lock body. Guy at S.O.S explained all my options and helped me select the best, least expensive solution. I've been trying to get a spare key made and everywhere I've gone they've told me they can't make a copy of this specific key type. I was walking past and noticed this place and figured let me see if they can make the copy. Sure enough they were able to do it. I didn't even need to take the key off the key ring! It took him 10 seconds! $9.95. The guy was super friendly. They take credit cards and there's no minimum amount! read more

We have worked with a number of locksmiths in Manhattan but none compare to SOS Locksmith which also installs and services electronic access controls, video monitoring and security systems. I had a great service getting two keys copied. $40 for two multi lock keys in 5 minutes.

Locked out of my apartment, call them, the guy says itll be 150-200$. Then, the guy actually shows up, manages to get in. Instead of picking, he breaks my lock (doesn't ask me if its OK to actually break the door because now I have to pay for a new lock, possibly would've reevaluated my options is this was the case). At the end he claims services were $360 (160 more, because there was an outside lock on the building as well). Got to communicate with customers. I was lied to, ripped off. Fixed the lock within hours and sent an invoice on a site that was easy to navigate, for a price that was more than fair. Love these guys! They've been around for 50 years. They always get my key copies perfect on the first try, I've never needed to come back a second time to have the keys fine tuned. I've also had a few lock emergencies over the years, and they arrived in a reasonable amount of time and got me in. Years ago, after a lot of local break ins, they recommended J Bars for my door, to reduce the chance of a break in. Shared the info with all the neighbors, worked like a charm! I went to the hardware store to get some keys made. They were closed. But a couple doors down, I saw SOS. What a great shop! As friendly and courteous as can be. And really good at what they do! Noticed that I had limited vision and went out of their way to provide keys that I could identify by touch. That was so helpful! Took the keys home and all 4 worked perfectly. Incompetent is best word to describe this place. They were unable to deliver what was promised over a several week period. It was a constant dog ate my homework type of excuse. The quality of the work was fine. No problems there. I was told nothing about costs. I scheduled an appointment to have locks changed, and I believe I was charged for an emergency visit. For a new deadbolt and key set, and a locksmith showing up, I got charged $550. For a deadbolt that might cost $100. What upset me: there was NO GESTURE on SOS's part to inform me what I would cost to have someone come over. If I am being dumb on the phone, they should have the COURTESY to inform me of the cost, at least some sense of cost. I don't recommend them for their service - just a mean, grubby steal. Really a 4+. That SOS has survived in Manhattan so long speaks volumes about its services. I recently moved and SOS helped me move my old Medeco deadbolt and faceplate--items that were well-made but ultimately discontinued by Medeco--from the old flat to the new flat. Installer Steve took his time to properly transfer the lock/plate and was pleasant while doing so.
