I have wanted to learn three skills since the time I was three -- magic, locks and photography. But having now aged ten times over, I have little if any progress to report on all but one. I thus found myself in the position of having to pay for my shortcoming last weekend, when I injudiciously locked myself out of my apartment, with no one else to blame for the act but my jetlag and being out of touch with apartment living, both as a result of my recent travels. Unfortunately for me, our multi-talented building super, who could reputably break in with some effort, was off at Sunday mass. I therefore walked over to the local hardware store in Tribeca, that apparently had a tie-up with Paragon. I was told that a dispatcher would call me in 30 minutes. As I waited for the call, my attempts at using a credit card to unlock the door proved futile, although they showed promise from time to time. The dispatcher called as promised and a young locksmith arrived. He had to drill a hole in the cylinder to break the lock. His services, together with a new cylinder, left me poorer by $160. Three stars awarded for their good service and reasonable weekend price. Two stars retracted for an apparent lack of creativity and for a cylinder with a somewhat mismatched shade from the rest of the lock. The only consolation is that by the time this happens again, I would have learned to break in by myself. read more

I'm traveling this week and was looking for something where I can store my valubles without having to worry. I found the perfect Master Lock "Mini safe" with a cord and combination lock. It fits my phone, passport, camera, jewelry and other important documents I might be carrying. I added some photos. I chose PINK but they have other colors. Very cool place with interesting gadgets. I imagine it is the cost of doing business in New York City but they charge me $600 because I had a Multilock on the door. After I lost my keys I was locked out. The locksmith used a saw to cut away part of the top plate which essentially did nothing, to my eyes it looked like the crowbar the locksmith inserted between the door and the door jam is what actually opened the door. $200 quote on the phone, $600 in reality. read more

July 12th of last year i purchased locksmith services from Paragon Security & Locksmith. I am troubled to say my experience was very negative: They are inconsiderate of the neighborhood where they do business. While they performed the service for me, they parked their vehicle outside my residence, completely obstructing my access to my bike lane which is directly outside of my house, not to mention forcing other people, including old people and little kids, to swerve dangerously in to traffic, just because theyre too lazy to look for parking. They were able to amend the original plan a few times and the tech got the work done pretty quickly installing and fixing 8 cameras and running new lines. I called and made a reservation for next day to change the cylinder of my door. The person on the phone confirmed that price is 145 fixed and I checked the price online as well. But when the guy came, he called for $370. Yes 370 for mere cylinder. Also, when I asked him what happened to 145 fixed cost, his response was my English was not good enough to understand what the person said or maybe he made a mistake. The more funny thing is he unscrewed the cylinder and emphasized the cylinder (found to be regular 1.5 inch cylinder) is very hard to find and even if I go to home depot, they are going to ask for my license as locksmith and ask me to buy them in bulk so almost impossible for me to do it. I told him to go home although he tried to settle the price down to 250 first and then 200. He got so mad that he left in silence but I felt like he was threatening me by saying I made him look stupid for having him talk to the manager on the phone to lower the price. However I think he thought I was a doormat because I found out that cylinder only costs 27 bucks at local locksmith and they never asked me for my license. At this moment I'm wondering if there's license for locksmith anyway. It took me maybe 3-5? mins at max to change the cylinder myself so screw you guys. I was willing to pay 145 plus tip for the guy but he missed the opportunity of making 150+ in three mints because of greed. I want to give them a 0 but 0 star is unavailable. Don't use this company. Shoddy operation. Called them after hours to open a $35 hotel style safe mounted in my closet. Was very specific with the make and model and that the job required someone with strong conventional key lock picking abilities. They sent someone with very little experience in and insufficient tools - a bump key or vibrating lock pick was what was required. All this guy wanted to do was drill the lock and then sell me an expensive new safe and installation. I should have paid attention to all the other negative reviews and avoided. read more

You're having a key emergency in the middle of the night on a Sunday- nice to know that you can call these guys. Now honestly, I didn't find these guys based on some random late night lockout sad story, but when I went there I thought it was pretty cool that all of the signs in the store say that they work 24-7. Nonetheless, my request was minor in comparison, but important to me. I needed to make copies of my keys. I'd been walking around with them in my pocket for a while when I finally decided to do it while passing by Paragon. 2 sets of 5 keys were completed in less than 10 minutes. I really want to say less than 5 minutes, but I wasn't quite watching the clock.. All I know is that it was quick, there was no wait, the guy that helped me was nice and efficient, and now I can finally give a spare copy of my keys to a friend so that I never have to call these guys at midnight to say that I'm locked out. read more

This review is only for the mini-safe since I didn't use any other service of theirs. I can say that the store looked well equipped though to help you with any lock/security needs and there were quite a few workers available to assist me. The mini-safe is pretty cool. It's a decent size so it can fit a bunch of credit cards, your passport, all your basic important belongings. I like that it comes with a locking cord so you can attach it to something as well. This would be a good thing to bring when you travel, especially out of the country so you can lock your passport up and leave it in the hotel. The lock itself is just a basic 4 # lock, and I had a little trouble opening mine at first, but overall it does the job. read more

Stopped by here to get a handy mini-safe and was very pleased with my experience! This shop is located in the beautiful West Village and was a convenient, short walk from my building. The inside of store was clean and an assortment of keys, doorbells, and other home security devices were displayed on the walls. The staff was very friendly and efficient, making my trip a pleasant and short one. I love the mini-safe I picked up - it's bigger than I expected it would be and is able to fit documents, cards, cash, cellphone, and any other necessary values that you could normally store in a purse. I can imagine it being very useful for keeping important items when traveling, or maybe for storing nice jewelry at home. It has a foam padding on the inside that makes it safe to put fragile items into. And as a plus, the lock is really easy to set up and the product is overall easy to use. I needed a hardcore bike lock that wasn't as cumbersome as the one I currently have which I think is better suited to secure a Mac Truck. I came by Paragon. They are located sublevel but have a great big old sign so you can't miss it. I came by simply to replace my bike lock that I lost during the hurricane. Great customer service - I came in, told the sales person what I needed and was in & out in less than 10 minutes. While I was there, a lady was waiting for her keys to be copied, another guy was shopping for an alarm system and I overheard how detail the technician was with explaining his choices. I had a very pleasant experience at Paragon security. I found out I had to stay at work a little bit later than I had expected so would not be able to make it on time to pick up a safe that I had needed. They told me that it was fine and that if I knocked on the door, someone would still be there to let me in. Upon arriving, there sure enough were people still working in the store and so I was let in, asked how I was, and helped quickly and in a very friendly manner. I'm really excited to try out the safe next time I'm traveling. The store seemed like they are frequently busy but also extremely organized. All in all it was a really fast and pleasant experience.
