Basics Plus (East Midtown) to the rescue. Every single time. Also: The guys who work in the store know where everything is and are super friendly and helpful. Selection varies, but I've been able to find high quality tools and hardware when I needed them and an array of workaround options for just about every unpredictable situation that's come up. They've also never batted an eye on the rare occasions when I bought the wrong thing and came back for a refund. These guys make everything easy peasy: Just don't forget to investigate the packaging closely and use care when opening! They are well within their rights to refuse returns with damaged packaging. Yet another are where the store excels: So far nothing I've had to return has been difficult to open without risk of damage to the packaging, making it simple to repackage anything that doesn't work out. So... Saturday morning and the hose for my Miele vacuum broke. I checked the internet and it came up on Amazon... but for some reason I didn't feel comfortable and felt I wanted to check locally. When I called and spoke to Carlos he was helpful, checked it out, called me back later in as he promised and didn't ask me to pay before I went to the store to pick it up. I'm not sure how much it costs to get copies of keys made.... but it seems quite expensive. Despite that, service was quick and efficient. Came in to do a quick sodastream carbonator switch, which cost $16. (Not sure what the comparable rate is in the city.) I was mesmerized by all the other household items that were in this store. Wow, if you need a replacement canister for your Soda Stream, you've come to the right place. They are right up front and easy to see. I swapped out my canister quickly and easily. I like this store sometimes. If I need any regular hardware stuff, they oblige. If I need a desk fan, they oblige. If I need those good-smelling sticks that go in a scented oil to put on my desk to mask my co-worker's BO, they can give me that too. They have a full line of Method products, fancy candles, vacuum cleaners, extension cords, cute shower curtains, etc. In short, they've saved me a few trips to Bed, Bath and Beyond. Customer service is not all that attentive. A lady walked in asking for a certain item, and the woman behind the counter said "I don't know. Go look for someone." "Where can I find it?" She waves the lady away. "Just go until you find someone." What the hell kind of service is that? I have gone there twice to have copies of a particular key made, and twice they have told me "eh, it may work, it may not." Well, the first time, the copy 1 of key did not work. So the person who needed the copy just had to buzz everyone in my building until someone let him in. Good thing Basics Plus copied the front door key correctly. I will try copy 2 of key tonight. If it works, I will gladly give this place another star. For now, 2.5. I hate mediocre service. Update - 14/8/08 - I officially hate this place and will never go back. The key didn't even fit in the lock. So I brought it back, thinking they would gladly try again. Nope. I was asked if I had the receipt. i didn't. "How are we going to give you your money back? You need your receipt." "I know this. I don't want my money back. I want the key." As he did yesterday, the guy looks at it like it is green ooze. he leaves and comes back a minute later. "I already put it on order." Has anyone ever heard of putting a key on order? I haven't. "But I need it tonight and I have been trying to get to get a good copy from you for two weeks." "Well, what do you want us to do?" he says, dripping with attitude. "Make the key so it works, you know, like you say on the sign out front. 'We make keys'????? " Yeah, I was clearly frustrated, but I tried to bite my tongue. I told them I would never come back to the store again. I am true to my word. Are they overpriced? Yup. I have many "yougottabekiddingme!" moments in this store. That said, if you live in the neighborhood, don't waste your time going elsewhere. Once you factor in costs of going elsewhere (time, gas, fares, lugging stuff, etc.) thry're dirt-cheap. Save yourself the headache. This is the place. Aside from just about anything household you may need (well, except for me - I have very far-fetched ideas), they have an exceptionally good selection of very good quality candles/reeds. Ladies, I don't need to explain. Gents - home fragrance is stuff that makes your home smell NOT like a frathouse. Reeds are sticks you stick (pardon the pun) into a (to simplify) bottle with fragrant oil and, as they absorb it, they diffuse a light scent which does not overwhelm into the air of your home. Aside from lovely feminine-touch scents for every taste, they have a very decent selection of masculine-note scents, which is far more rare than it seems. This is not AirWick or Fabreeze or Gain. Now don't tell the staff/owner, but that particular stock is priced correctly. Yes, they cost that much. No, it's NOT better to get a Bath and Body Works plug-in. No, they should not cost more. If someone is a Voluspa (moi) or Archipelago fan, you need to come here. You're welcome. And they have lots of tools and nuts and bolts and stuff. One last note - if you scare easily or have a heart condition, be prepared and bring nitroglycerine. One of the guys there sometimes wears really freaky lenses. I almost had a very embarrassing episode when I first saw him. Good thing I was standing close to the Home Fragrance section. Would be very useful had I not pulled myself together just in time. I live in the area and I've been trying to support my small businesses. This hardware shop seems nice. But the prices are way over amazon or even Home Depot. To make it worse they make returns difficult. I bought a doorknob that wasn't the right fit. Brought it back a few days later and they acted like I never bought it there. It was 8.99. I was in the process of buying 50 dollars of added merchandise. The guy refused and said no sorry I don't think it's from here. Even though the packaging and price sticker was obviously from here. BP is a small chain of stores with a decent selection of kitchen goods, hardware supplies, home electronics. These stores are convenient and have good hours. Usually I am willing to go the extra15 blocks to either Home Depot or Bed, Bath & Beyond because (1) BP never seems to have sales and (2) they sell most items at a high price ($$$). That said, if you need something quickly and one of these BP stores is close, why not use it? read more

Look. Is this a Bed Bath and Beyond. Absolutely not. It's called Basics Plus and that should give you a clue. But can you get most of the basic stuff you just NEED? And is there a little bit extra you weren't expecting? Yes. First, Danny and Paco couldn't be more helpful and just plain fun. I came in here specifically because I needed a soda stream carbonator recharge (Basics) but I also found a really cool shower curtain covered in reproductions of Old Master paintings (Plus) Don't look for it. I got the absolute last one. Some of the other reviews on here really annoy me. What are you people expecting?!! This store is only 125 sq ft. Do you really think they have the room to stock every single Paula Deen Extreme South Deep Fryer or 2012 Edition Razor Scooter? C'mon guys! Get Real! So what if the keys they make don't "work" every single time. They are made by hand and cost like a dollar. Give em a chance. Being one of the few stores open during quarantine, this store helped me get some retail therapy during covid! It looks like a small shop but they surprisingly have a lot of things, including barware and lots of scented candles. I'm so happy I don't have to go all the way to Bed Bath and Beyond to replace my Sodastream cannisters, too. It's a little bit pricier but that's what you get for convenience. Nice store but not great for a hardware store. The products they offer make it comparable to a mini (very mini) version of Bed Bath and Beyond, plus some hardware store-ish items. Overall a very convenient store to have in the neighborhood. The biggest perk is the nice staff and the location (for me, at least); though keep in mind they work there for a living, and have little experience actually using the hardware products they sell. read more

The BEST store in NYC!! This place is amazing... I just moved to New-York from Chicago. I wanted to get some stuff for my new house - I walked into the store trying to get some bulbs and in the end I spend $124..... they have EVERYTHING!!! safes,candles,towels,shower curtains,tools..... i really like this place. its like a hardware store, but new york style. they have safes and tools, but they also have cute shower curtains and contact paper with cow spots. the prices are average, but they carry higher end brands so don't expect to find a screwdriver for $1.99. i've bought everything here from plastic tubing to a hard to find light bulb to a key chain... i also think i bought some 2-part epoxy once. there are a bunch of other locations in the city... including one on the UWS near ollie's and one near union square, but IMHO this is the best one read more

I was referred here to repair a lamp that has a 3-way switch for 3 levels of light and which was working but only with a low level of light so I thought the switch broke. They gave me an estimate of $25 when I left the lamp and said they would call me with actual cost. They called me later in evening and quoted $35 which I balked at but agreed to. A little later I was told I could pick up the lamp the next day. When I went to pick it up I asked for a demo to ensure it worked. When I got home there was no change until the bulb blew out. When I replaced old bulb with brand new one, the lamp worked fine. I think the store ripped me off. I'm fine with paying for someone's time and expertise, but this was too much for a minor fix. The store was well organized, clean and had good hours (open until 10 pm on weekends!) so is great to have in neighborhood if I don't want to trek to Bed Bath and Beyond or Home Depot. I would consider shopping here but am irked that I feel ripped off. I had a much better experience with lamp switch replacement at Midtown Hardware nearby. read more

I needed a floor lamp. I explained to Paco that I had been using a halogen lamp and needed a very bright lamp because my living room area does not have any ceiling lights. I specifically told Paco I would need to test it out at home and asked -- three times -- if the lamp was returnable. Each time, Paco confirmed that the lamp was returnable. At home, I put the floor lamp together and it wasn't bright enough. I called the store to see if they wanted me to return it assembled or if I should take it apart. I was told that Danny was the owner, though he later claimed he was just the Manager. Danny told me that the lamp was not at all returnable. I explained that Paco had confirmed three times that I could return it, and Danny refused the return. The receipt does say 'Full refund/exchange on items returned with a receipt, in original unopened package within 30 days'. But I didn't see the receipt until after I'd paid for the lamp and was trying to carry out a 25 lb box, and after Paco -- as a representative of the store -- told me it was returnable. Extremely disappointed in this store, and its lack of customer service. It's too bad, because they have nice products and selection. Won't ever go back. But I will be sitting in a dark living room. read more
