Amazing selection and customer service I love the atmosphere and the level of customer service is incredible

I arrived at 5:10 PM for a single item--a balloon whisk. I said hello at the door, but instead of a reply, a somewhat neurotic staffer barked at me: "We close in ten minutes." (The store's published closing time is 5:30 PM, not 5:20 PM.) I went to look at the whisks. Another staffer literally ran over to me and, from about three feet away, stared at me for a while, with a pained, impatient expression. After a while he said "What you want! We close in ten minutes." At this point I asked whether they really close at 5:21 PM. He said yes. I said the published closing time says 5:30 PM. He said "That's when we lock the store. Customers get out 15 minutes before then." I asked for a manager, but none was present. I asked the employee for his name: Benjamin. Apart from the hostile service, the inventory I saw was pretty terrible. The whisks looked more like dollar-store items than serious commercial utensils. Perhaps the rest of the store is better, but I'll never find out. read more

Was looking for a doughnut cutter. Tried looking for it by calling NY Cake, Sur La Table, and Willams and Sonoma, but none of them had it in stock. Knew that there were lots of kitchen supply stores in and around LES. So wandered around seeing if stores had the doughnut cutter. Got referred to this place by another store. It was busy and I was able to find the doughnut cutter easily in their well organized shelves. Easy fast transaction with the friendly staff and will definitely be back instead of buying something on Amazon! read more

This isn't going to be one of the more comfortable experiences you'll have shopping for kitchen supplies. The aisles are really narrow and everywhere you look, you'll see merchandise from the floor to the ceiling. In some spots you'll need to suck in that gut to get through,.. this isn't a Williams and Sonoma at all. LOL There also aren't signs pointing out where things are and yes, there may not be prices on anything,.. LOL. Honestly they don't cater to the small time customers like me, but nonetheless their prices will definitely be better than at the previously mentioned merchant. For my visit, I knew what I wanted for my foray into making pizza dough, I needed a container to store my rising dough. I also needed a bunch of squeeze bottles so knew exactly what to ask for. I didn't need much interaction with staff, but I was able to find one staff member who was very helpful pointing me in the right direction for what I needed and finding the cover to the container I was going to buy. I was in and out quickly on a Saturday afternoon so I'd say if you know what you want and are ok with a little less than 5 star service for the price,.. you should be ok. read more

Fall is come and might depart soon as the beautifully brazen leaves continue to fall, they'll riot briefly with my rake and pail then disappear far quicker than they arrived. As I was scooping and pressing the crunchy brownish leaves, I recalled leaving the oven on high - just harmlessly boiling up a few yams and carrots. Turns out I almost burned the entire kitchen down to the studs as the wall formerly white wall now took on a new dark caramel streak. Sure wasn't much point to attempting to salvage Grandma's sauce pot which looked like it had taken a direct hit from a meteorite. I won't support Bezos, so amazon was out - he can fly around outer space on someone else's fifty bucks. eBay had some definite maybes, nothing stood out which is exactly how I felt walking Restaurant Depot's displays. Driving by CHEF previously - I committed to walking out with a pot come hell or high water and I did - a big aluminum one -- But walking in, I kept reminding myself to not buy more knives right now - no more knives Glennnnn! Your gonna wanna play with them and lacerate am important finger - I've been able to properly handke a chef's knife for decades, then I pour a glass of wine and in a moment, in my mind - I morph into Paul Boulcouse and get out the still and hone making the edge sharp enough to shave with, but it never works out the way I envisioned it too - but I remain insidious and impartial to thy self. 3 Sabatier high carbons, a Zwilling a Cutco a Warter a Shun - enough for now bro.. I decided on an 8.5 quart Eaglesware - Made in the USA - quality aluminum and the variety of other pots ranged from Holly Hobby size to military grade and all in between. I just can't adequately explain just how much stuff there was in each section - like a culinary Collyer brothers interior design -- you couldn't hit a piece of wall with a dart gun, items of every possible use dripped from everywhere, hanging on pegs and zip tied and awkwardly balanced - this isn't a bad thing, it was wonderful. The bad was the salesman wasn't there, I was the first customer in and the plan was to be the first out - this is the one star demerit. All along The Bowery, set back a few steps from the rapidly expanding NYC homeless encampments, there's a whole slew of such shops and if you have the time, give this stretch a scavenger hunt - I'm sure there were plenty more wonderful cookware deals to be had for both the home chef and the professional. read more

When wanting to support and patron a local business (trying to not buy from Amazon), one would hope that the staff would do better with customer service. NOPE! Do not expect that here. I went in to spend money on serious restaurant equipment: Electric Deep Fryer Electric Two Top Burner Pots and Pans 60 Forks 60 Knives 60 spoons 2 new lowboy fridges and the list goes on. When I arrived, no greeting and no offer to assist. In fact, after asking for those items, one would hope that a staff member would say "please give me a few minutes and I'll be right with you" or even "let me get someone to help you". Nope, I was told - "I don't know", "go look - prices are right there", "yeah, yeah, wait right there"...So I walked out and ended up spending a lot on Amazon for items I really wanted to buy from here. My suggestion would be to focus and improve on your customer service and sales game. My $5,000 would have been better spent with you, but your rudeness forced me leave and spend elsewhere (aka Amazon). read more

The gf and I decided to walk off our dim sum lunch by walking up Bowery with Union Square as our intended destination. Along the way, past many restaurant supply and lighting stores, we spied Chef Restaurant Supply. Spotlighted in Anthony Bourdain's "The Layover", I had to give the place a look-see. Hey, if it's good enough for Anthony Bourdain, then it's definitely good enough for me! Chef Restaurant Supply is a cash-only business with pretty much anything a professional chef or home cook who's looking for pretty much anything that you can't/won't find in William-Sonoma could ever need for their commercial or home kitchen. The store is jam-packed, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, with everything from pots and pans, cutlery, utensils, electrics, glassware, plates, etc. You name it, they probably have it. I picked up a few large serving trays for $9 a pop, so it was time well spent. read more

Lots of great stuff, but it definitely caters more to the at-home chef clientele now. Must be since Bourdain mentioned it. Tight spaces, and everything's packed to the walls. I've seen cheaper prices in Chinatown restaurant supply stores, but it looked like everything was good quality. From what I experienced, most of the people speak limited English as well. I've returned to purchase items a few more times and this store has quickly become my go-to place for kitchen tools because prices can be 30-50% less than retail stores like Crate & Barrel, Sur La Table, Williams-Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond, or another favorite local kitchen store. Sometimes options for a certain item aren't always in one spot, so I like to look around the store to see what is available. Anytime I've asked for help, there's always been someone available and helpful to show me where items are. Otherwise, I can take my time to peruse the store in peace without someone trying to sell me something. The store is geared for restaurant or commercial use so you won't find retail brands like OXO or All-Clad that are marketed and marked up for home use. As I've said, if it's good enough for a restaurant, it's good enough for me at home. A few things I've shopped for: Tablespoon scoop $7.95 - 3-4 options available all priced the same. The exact one I bought sells for over $14 at a local retail store. Handheld coarse grater $5.99 - I only needed a course grater and wanted something smaller that would fit in a drawer vs. a box grater or bulkier options. A similar grater sells for $20 at a retail chain store. Ricer - found two options for $11-12 compared to over-designed ricers that sell for $30+ at a retail chain store. read more

I went here after finding "bowery restaurant supply" closed on Saturday. I was specifically looking for a large cast iron griddle to cook pizzas on at home. Unfortunately they only sold the consumer stovetop lodge griddle. I still picked up some kitchen tools (tongs for ~2 bucks; fine mesh sieve~7; heavy duty 1qt aluminum sauce pan ~15) but they didn't have everything I was looking for and while the prices were cheaper than any big box retailer of kitchenware (and felt sturdy), I wasn't amazed by the prices. I'll definitely return to the area to try some of the other restaurant supply stores on a weekday. read more

Yes, yes, I know... What is with these reviews of kitchen supplies and other strange stores on Bowery? Well, Brett L. and I were on a quest for finding Asian crockery for me last weekend and we just walked up Bowery and found only two open kitchen supplies stores, this one and Advance Kitchen Supplies. This one gets 3 stars because it was more congested, disorganized and commercial than the other one. AND it didn't have my Asian dish bowls. Unless you are opening a new restaurant or redoing the kitchen of a restaurant or cafeteria, this place is quite a waste of time. Also, the customer service sucks, though they may have go the hint that we were not restaurant chefs or owners but we could have been if given the chance, I'm sure. read more

Also, you can call them ahead of time to make sure they have what you need in stock. The folks who work here are super friendly and helpful. Be careful, an hour or so in this store will have you coming home with a tortilla press, cheese cloth, frosting tips, a stainless steel saute pan, a mortar and pestle, and a new paring knife. Sometimes a guy needs a new whetstone or tweezers to take the pin bones out of a fish. Or sometimes a guy needs a Japanese Mandoline and a Robot Coupe and sometimes he wants to pick up all four in the same place. For occasions such as those, I head to Chef Restaurant Supply or as I call it, the "Real Bowery Kitchen Supply." Sure, there's the one in Chelsea Market, but its small and expensive and the layout confuses me. Seriously, I've gotten lost in there, and the place is not that big. CRS is just as packed full of stuff, but its bigger and I can clearly see down an entire aisle while figuring out what I "need" and what I "want." It might not be where the home cook goes to get things, but I'm not a home cook, so for me this place is like FAO Schwartz! And even if you are a home cook, wouldn't you rather buy a piece of restaurant quality equipment you'll keep forever, rather than some crappy thing from Caldor (yes, I know it doesn't exist anymore) that you'll be replacing a year later, anyway...? read more

Very cramped and somewhat chaotic near the main entrance, but there are very many good deals to be had. $35 dollars got me exactly the rice cooker I was looking for, and earned this place the fourth star in my rating. Bought two Japanese cast iron tea pots here for a great price. They have lots of kitchen stuff for affordable prices and are willing to negotiate on the final sale price if you buy several items. This is my first trip to a restaurant supply store and I got some really good stuff. My kitchen is small so I wasn't looking for anything too big, but they have a ton of utensils and little bowls and cast-iron skillets,etc. they also have more intense things like deep fryers. I live near this store and have been using it for years.Since Whole Foods opened diagonally across from them, the prices have gotten higher. But they do have everything (Breuer chairs, every size ladle or whisk you can imagine) and their prices are still cheaper than 'regular' stores. The only one of the Bowery restaurant supply stores open on Sunday. Wish more of them were. read more

Chef has best prices and selection on the Bowery for everyday cooking supplies. I got a great deal on a set of Henckels Pro series, a lot cheaper than elsewhere. Another good store for cooking supplies was Bridge, but is somewhat of a hassle to get to. read more
