NY Cake is NYC's baking superstore, with everything any baker, professional or otherwise, could possibly need to make their treats. I could spend hours going through all their cookie cutters, candy molds and decorative doodads. I also took a class not too long ago--on French macarons--and while my instructor was excellent and a true expert on the subject, she was stretched thin dealing with an overbooked and overcrowded class. Consequently, I don't feel I got enough of the hands-on learning that I needed to make those tricky little cookies correctly on my own. (Note: I STILL can't get them right.) read more

I saw a Tik Tok on this place and wanted to check it out when I was in NYC. It was open on a Sunday and was empty when we arrived, unfortunately a big birthday party of kids entered about 5 mins after we got there, but they were corralled into the baking room while we shopped. There are all kinds of fun things for the avid baker and lots of fun stocking stuffers or little favors for parties if your crowd likes to cook. For years, this business has been my go-to place to pick up baking items. (Including back when their location was elsewhere nearby!) I'm so glad they sell things like paper loaf pans of different sizes (some aren't listed on their online catalog btw), plastic containers for things like cakes or bundts, a variety of cake circles, and cake boxes of all sizes! Same with candy/treat bags/boxes. Personally, it's been perfect to be able to buy these things affordably and individually as needed. Sprinkles varieties. Coloring gels. Melting chocolates varieties. I mean no disrespect but it's not a store I can comfortably shop in knowing the same item is priced cheaper (even at 10%) somewhere else. Then, I would like to speak on the cleanliness of the store. I was recommended this place by a cashier at Trader Joe's from around the corner. Not only do they have a great selection of baking/decorating/confectionery supplies, they also have a cafe area (though it was unmanned when I came) and a large space reserved for classes. I do think there is a slight markup on prices. They sell Valrhona fèves at $22.99/lb whereas Whole Foods stocks them for $18.99/lb. There is a larger variety of fèves and wafers and melting chocolates available than I've seen anywhere else though. read more

I came in because I needed tart rings and on their website, a 3" is $3.00 and a 4" is $3.50 which was actually cheaper than the prices on Amazon. When I went in the store, the prices for the rings were stickered $3.59 and $3.99 respectively which doesn't make sense at all since they are a NY-based company and obviously shipping from NY so why are there price discrepancies? Along a quiet commercial section of West 22nd Street is this gem of a confectionary institution. NY Cake is the premier location for cake concocting individuals in New York City. The interior is bright, spacious and full of holiday cheer. We visited in Mid-November and the decorations were just coming up. Entering into this establishment one feels like they were transported into the set of a Hallmark holiday movie, complete with cake-making classes. There are three principal sections for patrons--the market for confectionary supplies, the cafe and classes. Don't be surprised while you are visiting if you hear the rhythmic tapping of eager studies trying to craft a savory delight. We tried the NY Hot Chocolate and Heath Bar Crunch. With regards to the former, it was very nice to be asked for milk preference--almond and oat options are available for those who don't do dairy. The Heath cookie was a delicious treat filled with tasty pieces of the namesake ingredient. My teen loves to bake and we stopped in here to see if we could find anything new and different for her. First the store is moving soon, they don't know where but they do have an email sign up to notify you of their new address. I'm hoping in the new spot they have a bit more room as this spot is quite tight and stuffed to the brim. It made it hard to get around or to look for things if someone was trying to get by you in the aisle. They do have a lot of decorating supplies as well as baking items. I finally decided to step inside this small shop...it was pretty tightly packed from floor to ceiling but I must say if you like baking for fun it had so many cute decorations to chose from! Sprinkles, flowers, themed decorations etc. SO CUTE! I picked up those tiny little silver balls, candles and an ice cream scooper for my cupcakes and it was over $20...a bit expensive if you ask me. Until three or four years ago, this business was located in a crowded, dingy, poorly lit space. It didn't matter, though, because the people who worked there knew the inventory, the names and uses of the tools they sold, and where on the sales floor it was kept. Then they moved into the space they occupy now. It is light and airy, with lots of space, a beautiful demonstration kitchen, and house made candy and baked goods for sale. Unfortunately, the larger space did not result in more or better inventory; if anything, they culled many things from their store. They also got rid of anyone who could help customers with questions requiring more knowledge than where in the store cookie cutters are located. I've been baking for over 50 years, and while I've never done so professionally, I have made professional-level wedding and event cakes. What I mean to say is that I'm not the one-cake-a-year from a boxed mix type of home baker. I know what I'm doing. Which is why it is so frustrating to go in there asking for, say, invert sugar, and have the employee stare as though you just dropped in from Mars. And if they don't have something, they rarely know whether it is something they don't carry, or something they're temporarily out of. And if the latter, they can't tell you when - or if - they might have it back in stock. Moreover, I've yet to have an employee offer to try to get more information for me, let alone find out if what I need can be special-ordered. And don't bother asking a clerk what the difference is between two products, unless you want them to read the text on the packages to you. It would have been great if they'd spent less on the shiny new kitchen, and concentrated on what products to carry and staff who know the products. read more

In its former location this place was dirty and the service bordered on outright hostile, but at least they had stuff one might need. Now the only items worth purchasing are much more easily found online...like Guittard chips...but the dearth of anything else unusual or interesting makes the trip there A TOTAL AND COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. read more

Moved to a new store - same old........ Don't the owners understand the CUSTOMER SERVICE and PERSONALITY is where it is at???? I went into the new store. It is tucked away in a new location. No outward signs or banners to indicate the new store. Store is beautiful, but I am SURE the prices can only raise. Went to make a purchase - lots of items had not pricing on them. Asked one of the personnel, I was told, "it can't be more than $3.99." This is why people turn to Amazon. You're not going to do the business and volume you need to keep this place going. I would have thought the enthusiasm of a new store would have allowed you to expand your customer services. You need to take some courses in Customer Care, Customer Appreciation, Customer Service. If not, you'll be out of business before long. Your new store cannot be cheap. read more

Places like these really makes you appreciate the wonder of technology that is online shopping. As silly as it is, I needed a bottomless cylinder to shape my summer pudding. A cylinder that happened to be $11. It's just... a metal ring. It actually reminded me of something Alton Brown said at his book signing "I'll go to a hardware store before entering to a culinary store." Words to live by. At the register, the lady beside me ask the cashier for square cookie cutters. I was actually in here some years ago looking for the same thing and a heart cutter... you'd think something so simple, they'd just have it. WELL YOU THOUGHT WRONG! The cashier turned to ask her coworker if they had any, and ever so eloquently, he gave her a face that could only mean "how would I know!?" (I said it little more ghetto in my head). Otherwise, you'll pay the premium to buy what you need in one shop or at the last minute. The staff is oddly quiet and awkward. I expected a tiny shop with employees waiting to bite your head off. So going in with this expectation, I was pleasantly surprised. For a baking supply store, the space is HUGE. Yes, the aisles are a bit tight and the store a bit cramped, but that's because there is just so much baking goodness here. I loved that everywhere I turned, I saw something new and intriguing to ogle over. The service was non-existent, but I preferred it as such. I liked being able to mill around at a snail's pace, checking everything out, without being asked incessantly, "Can I help you find something?" From baking pans to cookie cutters to edible glitter, NY Cake has it all. For an amateur baker like me, there's lots to discover. Yes, the prices are steep here, even compared to other baking supply stores. For the location and the selection, this is to be expected. I NEED a baking supply store, and this is the only one in Manhattan that I am aware of. If not for that, I'd never return. The selection is excellent. 4 stars on that factor. The store maintenance/atmosphere is not great - leaks, unkempt in places, crowded. I'd still give it a 3 star rating though, because they are able to cram a lot into a little space. The store is overpriced. 2 stars. The staff is 1 star. Miserable (with the exception of the one cashier - quiet latina - who is as friendly and timid as can be). They always seemed a bit rude, but this has escalated lately. Earlier this week I was there and a woman standing about 2 feet from me asked an employee a question about making royal icing. He just said "buy our premade royal icing" and walked away without looking back. At this point, she and I made eye contact and I helped answer her questions and guide her as to what she'd need. This is a BAKING store, not a "buy premade stuff" store - that kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think? Yesterday I was back and walked in to hear SCREAMING. This continued for at least 5 minutes, so who knows how long it was in total. This was an old man, seems to be the store owner, on the phone with someone and he was obviously not happy. The screaming included really pleasant comments such as, "I'll punch you in the face!" Why and how he thought this was appropriate to do at high decibels on the sales floor when about 20 customers were present is beyond me. And the rest of the staff pretended that it wasn't happening. Brilliant. That was what would, under any other circumstance, be my last straw. Please, if anyone knows where else I can go to get my goods, do let me know. Addendum: their in-store prices are approximately 15% higher (give or take) than their online prices. Never mind matching competition, this store doesn't even match their OWN prices! New York Cake is a good place to see all things baking in one compact location. They have food coloring, edible glitter, colored powder, all sorts of cake boxes, and pans in unusual shapes, just to name a few items. However, it's far too expensive. Everything costs 30% more at this store. In contrast, you can get things 30-40% *OFF* at Michael's. 40% off a single item or 30% off the entire purchase. As a result, it's double the price. The convenience might be worth 10-20% more, but not 100% more. It's way off. $1.30 (30% more) .60 (40% off) See, it's more than double the price. The one advantage they could have as a store instead of online is with service. However there is no customer service. I was there for half an hour and not once did someone greet me or ask if I needed help. I got stared down when I first walked in. I wandered in, looked down at my phone to see my shopping list, and looked up to see a woman staring grimly at me from behind the counter. They have a little office area there and all four of the staff stay there. The person at the register did at least say "thanks have a nice day." But I mean really. When a place is so cold and unfriendly that you notice when someone says or does anything at all, that is a problem. I would love to support a little shop over a big box retailer or the internet store, but they are just charging too much and are not even personable to make up for it. read more

Six glorious years and a handful of visits and calls later, this place still needs some SERIOUS help with their customer service. Since my first visit, I have never asked anyone for help ever again unless I couldn't reach something. They used to store their boxes in the back, and you'd have to ask an employee to help you out, and those dudes were always nice. Their boxes are laid out on the shelves now. The cashier ladies in the front? Not so much, people. They hate their jobs, lives and everything in between. Plan your visit with ample time because they are not kidding about their closing time. I get it, trust me, I do, but do you really need to be nutcases about it? They pretty much lock the door before the shop is closed and you feel trapped in this antsy tense baking hell. I called with a question, was told my answer, and as soon I said "oh okay, thanks," I was hung up on more quickly than you'd drop a wrong number. Damn, that stung. I don't know if Whisk has the same selection at their locale down the road, but their customer service on the phone was the exact opposite and thus warrants a visit instead. Plus, the box I wanted is cheaper at Whisk by 50 cents. read more

This shop has an amazing selection of baked goods- and confection-geared items! It's a good sized store, brimming with products, both edibles (some stock items like Callebut (white, milk, and semisweet, $99/lb) and Valhrona (bittersweet, $15/lb, unsweetened, $19/lb) chocolate and royal icing mix, and things like this) and utensils (for shaping, cutting, manipulating, and cooking anything sweet). The edibles are very reasonably priced. The equipment prices are a bit inflated, but not so badly that I'll remove a star. I came here to buy cannoli forms (essentially, pieces of metal pipe), of which they had several sizes, in both aluminum and steel from the looks of it, and a round pastry cutter (also varied sizes, but all steel). I ended up getting a lb of the aforementioned chocolate (bittersweet), and some stainless steel muffin tins (it's almost impossible to find such bakeware that is neither nonstick nor aluminum). This is the the type of store, along with grocery stores and larger bodegas, that I should probably only enter with a set amount of money and time, because otherwise eons pass while I thoroughly go through the store and find a gazillion things I must taste or add to my cluttered cabinet tops, to use once or twice in some elaborate baking project. So perhaps it was fortunate that I was in a hurry, but I know I will return and spend the sort of money normal women spend on handbags and shoes. Well, I am gaining ground on the shoes part... Stepping into this shop, I thought I was in a warehouse. There were bins and bins of practically every utensil needed for cake baking throughout the store. It's definitely a one-stop store if you were looking to decorate any cake. Sadly, the prices were not warehouse prices. It costs a moderate $3 for a small cookie cutter. Strangely, all prices seem cheaper online than in store. For several years I have been going to the NY Cake store to fulfill my needs of various baking equipment and ingredients that are not normally found in most markets. NY Cake is conveniently located on 22th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in its newer and more spacious location. Earlier this week I made a stop for the coveted melting chocolate and in search of hazelnut extract as I had not been able to find this item in various markets. To my delight NY Cake came through once again and not only had both of these items but also offered a wide selection of items in both departments. So many times, I run into a panic this time of the year looking for items which range from cookie cutters to green/red sprinkles or in this case hazelnut extract. Each time I have been able to find this needed item at NY Cake! It eases the stress of the moment and is a comfort to know the odds of finding the "Holy Grail" of baking items will be at the one and only NY Cake store! read more
