However, the quality has gone down. Way down. I need to warn others and update my review. Have you heard of a homemade apple pie with canned apples? I have never. Martha Stewart would be horrified! Well, at the pie making class where the hefty $105 price included a pie to take home, they used canned apples and made it seem like that was normal. Nooooooo! Their own recipe that was emailed after the class called for fresh apples. When we were told to stir the apples, I could smell the metal from the can. It was disappointing and gross. Sur La Table should take more pride than use canned apples for an apple pie. They sell gourmet salt and truffles and fancy coffee makers. Everything should be top quality and gourmet. I this some people come in to this class with the wrong expectations, which leads them to give a negative review. You need to remember - this is a class, not a restaurant. Yes, you're paying to make a meal, but you're also paying to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal we made (chicken marsala, salad, polenta, and gelato). Chef Bradford was a 10/10. Fun, polite, but also serious to not allow any nonsense happen. A great teacher. Yes- you share a station with another couple (at least we did). We got lucky - our paired couple was on point and polite. I feel we made enough food to be full. I would totally come back for another class! CON: the one thing I wish they did was to be able to sit when eating the meal. It is awkward to stand and eat. I came to Sur La Table for a team outing with my coworkers and it was so much fun! My coworkers and I took a cooking class and made the most amazing risotto and chicken. The cooking class was fun, entertaining and it was so easy to follow along with our chef, Steven. His attitude made the class even more enjoyable. Everything was portioned out and the steps were given by the chef who helped along the way. While we cooked, we drank wine. We also got a tour of the shop and learned about different cookware. The staff were super friendly and the shop so clean and beautifully laid out. Since we took a group cooking class, we received 10% off of any purchase that day and $10 dollars off our next cooking class. I highly recommend Sur La Table for a team outing or a cute date. Customer service: Zero! I went to this store at 6pm on Tuesday December 9th 2025. There was no one at the door to greet customers. There were ten assistants working in the store though. I was in the store for ten minutes and no one asked me if they could help me. There were more assistants than customers. At the back of the store, two assistants, one white guy and a black guy, were talking across the knife showcase, avoiding eye contact with customers. Finally I found what I needed. When I went to stand at the cashier desk, a rude, officious South East Asian woman told me to stand behind a line painted on the floor, that was small and not clearly visible; and, she spoke to me as if I were a child. Received a gift to attend a cooking class which is located inside the store - we had a nice time and it was a fun activity. We made an appetizer, entree and dessert. Food was food. Disappointing Experience -- Not What We Expected We booked a cooking class at Sur La Table to celebrate my son's birthday -- there were four of us (my husband, my son, his girlfriend, and myself) and we spent about $400 for the experience. While the idea of cooking together sounded fun, the experience fell far short of expectations. We were surprised to learn that our group would cook one steak to share among the four of us. For the cost, we expected at least one steak per person or at least half a steak each. After standing for two hours preparing the meal, we assumed we'd be able to sit and enjoy what we cooked -- but there were no chairs provided. When I asked for one due to back discomfort, I was given a folding chair, but since the tables were counter height, it didn't help much. I've attended several cooking classes at other establishments, and this was by far my least enjoyable experience. I've never had to stand through the entire meal before -- it really took away from what should have been a fun, celebratory evening. For the price and reputation of Sur La Table, I expected a much better setup and overall experience. We actually left hungry and considered going out to get something else to eat afterwards. This class left a lot to be desired but with a few small adjustments, they could provide a better experience for future guests. However, I would not recommend this class. Sur La Table evokes a certain sophisticated air that had me expecting an experience like the one I just had at Williams-Sonoma, but I was surprisingly off with this one. I'm the owner of several lovely Sur La Table items, like a beautiful white marble cheese board and adorable gold cheese knives with antlers as handles. This particular location felt worlds away from the chic big-box vibe I envisioned. Something about the way their items were stocked felt very kitschy and messy. Haphazard product displays, seemingly no rhyme or reason to the order of things. It felt more akin to an aging local homegoods shop than a national chain. To their credit, the staff was super friendly in an effortlessly pleasant way, but the product selection left much to be desired on the gift front. I did clock that they offer cooking classes here. So while the retail side may be a bit lacking, I could certainly see myself returning to take a culinary class. Felt like a night in Paris with a magnificent chef! This was a terrific cooking class. The recipes were precise and very doable. All the ingredients and utensils were prepped and ready to be used when we arrived. Our chef Megan was fabulous. She was patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and very friendly. Her presence made this class such a wonderful culinary experience that we won't soon forget. We're already trying to schedule another class. Hopefully, she will be our chef once again. I had a disappointing experience at the steak and gnocchi cooking class Sunday 12/15 at 4pm, entirely due to the attitude of the chef. Her condescending demeanor set a negative tone from the start. At one point, she very loudly yelled "HEY GUYS" to get everyone's attention, claiming she'd lose her voice otherwise, and even made a remark about all of our "grubby little meaty hands in the salt dish," which felt incredibly unprofessional. When groups requested the steaks be cooked differently (as she'd asked), she later couldn't identify which steak was which and simply told us to "look inside and figure it out." A cooking class host should create a warm, engaging, and enjoyable atmosphere--that's often what makes people want to return. **This review is based on the cooking classes they offer.** Signed up for tamale cooking classes and it was a blast. The instructor was super helpful and walked us through each step with great detail. We also made Mexican hot chocolate which was the perfect match! The only bad thing is you cannot bring the tamales you make as they are not a restaurant and won't allow you to bring it home. I would recommend you treat the cooking class as dinner also so you can eat what you make. Afterwards you are emailed the recipe with details. I've been a huge fan of Sur La Table... my love affair started in San Francisco in the Ferry Building many years ago. They were located next to one of my top five restaurants The Slanted Door. When I returned from San Francisco, I was pleased that a branch was located in Soho. I bought many gadgets and gifts at that location. And in Seattle, near the Public Market, more great kitchen gadgets. Today, I finally visited this location and I'm very impressed: beautifully merchandised, very friendly staff and I've discovered new products such as Pebbly, glass storage containers from France. The store's layout is well designed and extremely organized. I've purchased their oven proof glass cookware, spatulas, table linens last Fall and I'm extremely happy with all. I also met Emily, the manager, who is one of the instructors of the Cooking Classes. I've had those Classes on my to do list for a while and I was impressed at this location's cooking class environment. I learned they facilitate daily classes and this month there will be Thai cooking, pastas and numerous other courses. Classes start @$99 and are about two and a half hours. If one signs up in store the ingredients are provided if done virtually you have to buy ingredients. Additionally, you receive a 10% off coupon to use for in store purchase. The service is spot on and the Assistant Manager who assisted me at checkout was professional and kind. All in all a great experience and I highly recommend Sur La Table. read more

My group of 7 attended the Latin cooking night taught by Tonya for one of our good friend's birthday. This was our first time at this cooking class, though we've taken others before. I really appreciated Tonya's attention to each table & her cooking tips that I'll be able to utilize at home on a daily basis. I also have to shout out Andrew for his attentiveness. He made sure that each table had everything we needed for the meal & was quick with cleanup. The food was seasoned SO well. Our steak was cooked to a delicious medium rare. The elote also had jalapeño & tomato which is an element I'm not used to. Lastly our chimichurri sauce for the steak was DIVINE. Tonya spoiled us even further with a watermelon Fresca drink. I'm not sure what we did to deserve the treatment we received (paid $90 lol) but I'm also not complaining either. The only only only wish I had was that they add chairs so that we could have sat down to enjoy our delicious meal. I'd still recommend. Hope to enjoy another class here! read more

Stand behind your products or don't sell them. Three weeks ago we treated ourselves to a Jura automatic coffee machine that cost north of $2,500. The machine made so so coffee and the milk foamer broke. We looked at our receipt (see attached) and decided to return it. Holy Lousy Customer Service Batman!!! The hubby went to the store of purchase and they tried to tell him that the return policy didn't apply to Jura products and the sales person didn't use the correct receipt. Welcome to the world of "Not My Problem!" After a heated back and forth with the manager, she finally gave us a refund for the broken machine. She gave the return reason as "changed our mind" which is inaccurate. The machine was defective. And for those in the cheap seats, the receipt she processed the return on listed the same return policy no Jura exception. Stay away from Sur La Table for Jura products. read more

bought a "non stick" SCANPAN last month. But just realized that it had a design flaw: the handle was attached to the main part of the pan, on the inside, was NOT non-stick material, so food stuck to that material. So when cleaning the inside of the pan with a non-abrasive sponge, the handle attachment did not get clean. I brought the pan back, with my receipt, but since I had used the pan, and did not have the original packaging, as per the store's requirements, they would not take back the pan. This pan should not be sold as a non-stick pan. And surely Sur la Table could have returned the pan back to the manufacturer. I will NOT be shopping there ever again. read more

First off if I can give zero stars I would! Had a reservation for a date night! Called a few days in advance to confirm bc I went to look at the calendar to see if there would be anything else we'd be interested in making and I noticed it said "Private event" on the day of my date night! I called to confirm and was asked if anyone called to cancel and I said no call or email and was told to go to, some mix up and to arrive at least 15 min prior to class to have the chef go over everything, Hubby & I show up, wait around a little then we're told that class was cancelled. The store employees get customer service on the phone and they apologize and said they'll refund the class!! Well that's the least you can do! I ask to speak to someone to explain how they dropped the ball and was told someone would call me. Well I waited and no one called so I call customer service. First they tell me to call the store they have to straighten it out. Store says customer service needs to deal with it!! Seriously??? I called customer service again. Explain how they dropped the ball and am offered a 15 dollar coupon! For all the aggravation that's what you offer? Ok 20 dollars. I said listen, please have a higher up call me. Great selection and awesome customer service. I called in advance to see if they had immersion blenders in stock, and Emily pulled all the immersion blenders they had available and told me what was in stock and their prices by phone. I ran there immediately (needed it for dinner that night) and she kindly helped explain the differences among all three and had them already pulled for me, ready to go. They no longer have nespresso but now have jura, with free in-store samples. A kind gentlemen made me a latte and explained the differences between several of the machines to me. He was lovely. Highly recommend this place for a store with the wide selection of a big chain store but the friendly and helpful customer service of a small family-owned shop! read more

Mixed review here. I have never been to this store, but I needed some sheet pans and a friend recommended this store. I was helped by two women. A woman called Karen was very nice, patient and very helpful. I was on my own after she helped me find sheetpans because I wanted to look around on my own for a while. The other woman who help me me, whose name I didn't catch (long brown hair, olive skin, perhaps of Indian descent) was snippy, curt and all-around unfriendly. She seemed to be a manager, which was kind of surprising, based on her attitude toward me, another customer and a seperate male associate. I would return here if I need something (maybe a new coffee maker soon!), but I would not let myself be helped by this second woman. If you come here, ask for Karen. She's great. read more

What a great partnership...Sur La Table partnered with NY Road Runners (NYRR) on healthy eating session for interested NYRR participants. The first half was a speaking session on Chef Celeste's background at the NYRR Hub (located next door). The second half was a cooking demo of pad thai at Sur La Table's Kitchen. Since the preparation work was done, the sauces were ready to go, cooking the pad Thai with all the ingredients was quick (there was no protein like chicken otherwise it would take a bit longer to cook) and ready to eat in 15 minutes. Pretty amazing -- I would need to adjust the sauce levels since it was too salty for me. It is more salty than in a typical Pad Thai dish in a Thai restaurant. Afterwards, Chef Celeste took us around the store and showed us what products to get to make pad Thai easier. It was awesome that the store offered 20% off for their store product and $20 off any class. There is so many different options that you can pick the simple or easier equipment. The store's layout was simple but if you happen to carry a big bag, be aware of your bag. The aisles are not narrow though it's not very wide. Pretty cool store to check out read more

My wife bought a cutting board at Sur La Table. It was made of two pieces of wood held together by epoxy. After a few months it began to split and within a year it had split in half. We barely used it and after it split we returned it to the store expecting an apology and a store credit. Instead we were told that they know their products are junk so they only provide a one month warranty so that unless the board was returned within one month we were out to luck. My friends and I had fun cooking at this venue. My friends have tried cooking classes here couple times but this was my first time taking a cooking lesson. So, I was excited! It was my birthday present from my friend's mother. I was so happy to receive this birthday gift! The menu was supposed to be scallop or something but I believe they switched this due to the 40th Anniversary of Sur La Table. So the menu we had that day was Coq Au Vin or Chicken in wine sauce. Chef Celeste was our Chef and she was assisted by her Sous-chef and the team. They had a great team. The chicken wasn't the only one we had to prepare but we also had a chance to bake some chocolate soufflé with salted caramel, woohoo! I can't believe I could learn two things. One thing is hard enough to learn, imagine making two dishes in one class, oh no! However, I did it! With the proper method and teaching technique, my team and I were able to follow. I burned the chicken a little bit though, but that's ok, it's part of the learning process. Chef Celeste taught us more than just cooking. As I said before, she taught us the cooking technique and gave us some great tips to have the best results. Our final results looked great! I just need to start making them at home couple times. While the food stayed in the oven, we were escorted to the store area. Chef talked to us about some of the helpful tools that we could use with our cooking preparation. By the way we also received a handout of our menu to take home in case we want to remake this dish at home. After explaining the tools in the store area we went back to the kitchen and had our dinner together. Marvelous! There's no doubt this is one of my great cooking experiences. I'd like to try making other dishes too, so I could cook for Hubby. This class consists of four groups and each group has four cooks and I was one of them. What a great experience! Visited their store on 57 Street with my wife. We purchased a $300 Le Creuset Pot from a very helpful sales woman. After purchasing it my wife decided to browse some more for a few more items. I asked who I believed to be the manager, a male with glasses and white hair for the code to the bathroom of which there are two located in open view in public area of store. He stated they are only for people that take the cooking class and refused my request. I asked my wife to put down the items she had picked to buy and left the store. I took a Thai cooking class Saturday. The class was nice, though it started late. Several students had taken classes before. The teacher was nice, but had a slight accent. The spice we grated is used instead of ginger - must have been galangal, but I couldn't understand what the teacher said, even after she repeated the unfamiliar name. She should have spelled it. Ah. That is in the recipe. The red curry tasted good - even to my very particular Asian wife at home. Worst: I requested recipes. At least twice they emailed links that didn't work. Finally I called, and someone got it right, but I don't take kindly to spending about an hour to get the recipes, after paying $89 for the cooking class. Better to just find a good recipe! Small comment: they gave us a rubber cylinder - which they sell - to take the skin off the garlic. Much better technique I learned from a chef: Squeeze it down first with the flat of a knife. The skin will come off easily, and the juices will come out, too! No need for an extra gadget! I wouldn't attend another cooking class at Sur la Table. This place was in Bethesda, MD. read more

We received a gift and went to a cooking class. Very difficult to rate should be a 3 1/2 star for me. INSTRUCTOR - she was excellent but I learned more tips than actual cooking COURSE PACE - there were 16 folks in the class our opposite couple were fantastic. The info was extremely good but the pace was so fast if you tried to think or write a note you missed the next two things said LIVE COOKING - we were shown how to cut/prepare with interesting techniques but if Yan Can Cook I'm not so sure I could cut like he does without injury HANDS ON EXPERIENCE - with 4 people at a table you sort of pick 1 pre-prepared ingredient and you cut, dice, shave etc. and then team then has the pre-work done. Same with the actual cooking on the stoves. HYGIENE - super managed with continual hand washing to eliminate cross contamination. They get an "A" rating SCAM-WAY APPROACH - wasn't too keen on the "let me sell you on the pits, pans, utensils, etc." as a store walk through was part of the course. CHEEZY read more
