We stumbled into the shop as we were walking around. It is by far one of the most beautifully designed and eclectic array of delicious chocolates and salts and flowers and cards so many different chocolates from all over I ended up buying six beautifully handcrafted chocolate bars, 72% as Christmas gifts with some beautiful little caramels that were at the register and a small pot of salt . Great little gem of a shop! There is so much packed into this five foot wide market. It has an impressive selection of very niche items -- specifically chocolates, salts, and bitters. "Oh I stumbled upon this cute little store while walking through West Village"... ...is probably what you said to your friends when you were describing the Meadow. The Meadow is very straight forward with what it offers: Salt. Chocolate. Bitters. and Flowers. There are free samples strewn about the store. And for a tiny place, it does hold quite a variety, of well: salt, chocolate, bitters, and flowers. I ended up purchasing a goat's milk chocolate (my new obsession) and a few other chocolatey delights before having a polite conversation about the nearby book wine bar with the cashier. The prices may be pricey, but also what cute, niche, store in the city isn't? Stumbled upon this shop on a night stroll in SOHO. I was pleasantly surprised. The employee working was so friendly and knew her salts and chocolates like the back of her hand. Never knew how much variety salts come in and they had popcorn with truffle salts as samples. There were so many exotic cacao chocolate bars to choose from, all very creative and also good for you! I've been going to this spice shop for 5 years now and I'm elated that I came across it one day. I have a salt and pepper grinder and whenever I run out, I always come to this place. If I'm in town, I'll go in person but I usually buy online. My favorites are the Brazilian Sea Salt Grosso, The Kala Namak salt, the Maine Apple Smoked Salt, and the Voatsiperifery Pepper. I've used these on chicken, fish, beef, pork, deserts, soups, etc. If you are having trouble deciding, the staff is more than willing to help. Adorable store that sells an eclectic mix of chocolates, salts, and bitters! I have never seen so many bitters in my life and had no idea of the wide variety available. There are tester products, so you can sample most of the ones that they have for purchase. I bought the yuzu bitters, which are delicious! My friend got the orange and fig ones (also great). They are not cheap though since this is a specialty product. In addition, I was definitely eyeing the Himalayan salt mortar and pestle... Staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about the products. He gave us great recommendations about how to use each of the bitters. I saw a great interview and promo for this place, but not sure what happened? I ordered 3 items with priority shipping, so you think it arrived on time? No. I'm on day 5 with zero communication. I have emailed 4 times, I have called 3 times and can't get confirmation for the purchase even with my order number. I was told the shipping people don't work on weekends... but I ordered on Wednesday, Aug. 8th so they had 2 full days to send a priority shipping paid for box with the products I purchased. Nope. Still nothing. This place seems disorganized af, with shitty customer service since I'm being forced to stalk them for 4+ days (not including weekends) for answers. And what a surprise? They've had consistent issues and negative reviews with online orders and figuring out what they need to do to ship the items. I see 4 and 5 stars... maybe that's for a particular type of customer. This place only deserves 1 star for the way they operate. So disappointed that their shortcomings played a big part in ruining my friend's birthday gift. read more

Overall, a lovely, cute little store in the West Village. I found out about them via the salt book and googling around. Paid a visit while visiting New York and well worth it! If you want a destination other than the usual touristy things, a visit to this store is a lovely little experience. Nice curation and unique experience. Staff is efficient, friendly, and helpful. I took probably 45+ minutes sampling salts, trying to ascertain the perfect assortment of salts for my kitchen that was also within budget and could fit in my carry-on luggage! The staff was patient with me and I got some bamboo salt and sel gris that was quite lovely, and I've enjoyed the salts these weeks afterwards in my cooking. There are also an extensive collection of chocolates and bitters. Next time I'm in New York, I might try to get some bitters! We decided we needed a nice gift for our daughter's in-laws as they always let us stay with them while visiting. This seemed like the perfect gift when I got home and I saw the website had nice gift baskets, many different choices and price points. Also once you pick one you can curate it by specifying either your favorites or maybe favorites of the person receiving. I didn't see the arriving gift, but I got a text that it looked beautiful and that they loved all the chocolates! FTW! Darling shop full of salts of every type, an array of chocolate bars, flowers, absolutely a foodie dream. But my favorite salt, the black truffle salt was very disappointing and has changed. Much less truffle flavor, while price has gone up. She recommended the Mania Paakai sea salt chocolate bar and we bought a few. However, it has a strange after taste that we did not care for. I loved this store. I was just walking by on my way to lunch, and stopped in when I saw they sold bitters. Do they ever sell bitters! They have about 100 different kinds of bitters. Now, I practice Daoist medicine (I am doing an artist-in-residence gig at CAP Beauty on West 10th, hence I was in the neighborhood), and bitters are used to improve the release of bile which improves digestion. But my darling hubby is a cocktail master, and so we have about 4 different kinds of bitters to use in making drinks. I took a photo of the 2 cabinets (two!) full of a wide array of bitters. There were so many different flavors my head was spinning. OK, now this shop is full of lots of other very cool things, too. What drew me in was the big slabs of pink Himalayan salt. I guess people cook on those, but I want one for my acupuncture office on Union Square, as salt is the flavor associated with the deepest energies in the body, the Kidney Yin and Yang that are our constitutional-level energies. A good thing to have in an office where I regularly need to recharge people's deepest energies to restore them from too much stress and from overwork. Where do I even start? As a chocolate-lover soon to be connoisseur, The Meadow seems like the perfect beginning. Chocolate from all over the world, it's almost hard not to get every bar there. The person working told me, "just close your eyes and reach your hand out." After trying three bars, I'm confident any pick at The Meadow will be a pleasant one. Not only do they have chocolate, but salts, bitters, and Salt & Straw ice cream. If you didn't know there was a different between salts, you definitely will after trying samples here. They were making truffle salted popcorn when we walked in, and after a couple handfuls I had to leave with a bag of my own. And I was almost hesitant to try the ice cream, I didn't want to know of a Honey Lavender flavor better than my local store, but... I was both amazed and disappointed. I guess I'll be going here for Honey Lavender now haha. Although a bit pricey, the feeling of international immersion is well worth it. read more

What a great shop! It's tiny but it sure packs a punch. Inside you'll find: A wall of delicious, artisan chocolate bars (plus cocoa beans, caramel, and more). A wall of incredibly diverse and intriguing finishing salts for cooking (try any and all you'd like. The lavender in particular is wild!) A window full of beautiful pink Himalayan salt blocks, bowls, and mortar/pestles for cooking. A lovely variety of fresh cut blooms for bouquet making (which did my soul good to see in mid-February). And a large cabinet packed to the gills with bitters and mixers for cocktails. It was so wonderfully overwhelming I couldn't pick just one. Instead I just sampled a few and oohed and ahhed over the cool packaging. Having been to shops that carry similar items I have to say I also found the prices incredibly reasonable. I got a huge bag of sea salt for just $12, a bag of cocoa beans for baking for $16, and a jar of delicious sea salt caramel for $12. I live near Zingerman's (which carries a lot of similar salts and candies) and I feel like each item would have been significantly more there. The staff is incredibly helpful. While I didn't personally need much assistance I saw the gentleman running the shop that day spend a ton of time with a woman shopping for a gift (they settled on a salt block and a cookbook on salt block cooking). Great shop all around. Can't wait to go back and get more goodies the next time I'm in town. read more

I was rushing by one evening and I legit stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this place. Bougie chocolate displayed in a cozy gorgeous store with bitters on the other side? Salts that I can't afford? Ice cream that my lactose intolerance won't allow? Yep. I put it on my literal to do list to come back. So, I walked back in on Halloween dressed as Black Widow from The Avengers. Shoutout to the guy working here dressed as Wolverine's Logan persona. He was standing on the tall ladder organizing bitters, I guess, or chocolate. He climbed down gracefully to talk to me about chocolate, my favorite subject. "I can't eat dairy," I hesitantly declared. He pointed out all the dark chocolate. He pointed out all the chocolate he wished I could eat, the gorgeous bars arranged with caramel. I've been buying my Himalayan Sea Salt here for several years now. At first they had a truffle Salt that beat all others. My savings was going all to them. Then one day they switched to a different truffle producer. I stopped coming. Now they're back to having a great truffle Salt that beats Dean and Deluca. My daughter loves coming because this is where we find different chocolate options from all over the world. We're always on the search for a great 100% organic 100% dark chocolate. Chocolate curation, customer service and general "up your cocktail game"ry simply doesn't get any better than at the Meadow. It's a true find and they have an incredible eye for all things fancy. A few years ago, the husband and I decided to try our hand at mixing cocktails beyond the standard issue, and when searching around for where we could find bitters and mixers locally, we came upon the NY location of The Meadow. We wandered in one afternoon and could not believe the incredible display. A captivating array of potions, beakers, blocks and jars of every sort, and just to our left...a wall of chocolate. A wall of the best array of chocolate we'd every seen. Brands I've heard of but had never seen, many I hadn't, with beautiful packaging and the promise of a new discovery within. With the push of the Meadow into this new realm, we are now fully obsessed with chocolate. Not just any chocolate but the really good stuff, which is the only kind that the Meadow carries. If you start going deep into the chocolate blogs (yes, there are chocolate blogs...I did say obsessed) and run through the list of the "must try" brands, the Meadow carries more of these brands than any other place. Yes, the chocolate is pricey, but this is not the kind of chocolate where you eat the entire bar while watching an episode of Girls. This is savor it, one square at a time, compare and contrast with several other bars chocolate. A little goes a very long way, and if you get a bunch, it really lasts a very long time. I haven't even mentioned the salt, which is clearly another of the Meadow's very special offerings. We have not delved yet into that arena, and frankly, I'm a little scared to get hooked on that too. One final note: I often like to give a few bars of chocolate to houseguests or when we are visiting friends to indoctrinate them into the Way of the Chocolate, and on a recent Monday, I suddenly realized that I hadn't prepared far enough in advance for an upcoming trip where 3 sets of chocolates were required. They could not have been nicer, more accommodating or more thoughtful in following up to make sure the order arrived in time (it did). The purchase was made through the online store as I had specific items in mind, but if I hadn't, I'm sure they would have taken great care of us at the West Village location. So I needed more pink sea salt for cooking, and wondered into here when I saw huge bowls made of pink sea salt. I only knew of 2 types of salt prior to walking into here- white table salt and pink sea salt. This store had so many more types of salt- truffle salt, golden colored salt etc from different parts of the world. They also had an endless variety of chocolate. If you are looking for fancy chocolate or salt, and are willing to spend a bit of extra cash, you will like this store. read more

I am disgusted by the customer service. My friend and I walked in, intrigued by the large and varied selection of artisanal chocolates. There was only one other customer in the place, and the clerk was helping her. Then it was just my friend and I, with my friend looking over the variety and commenting aloud "I don't know which to get!" No response from the clerk. No, "Hi, how can I help you," nothing. Zilch. The place is tiny - he couldn't have NOT heard. Then we're wandering around the store some more, other customers come in, and he's rushing to help them, even leading the new customers to where we were and standing in front of us to explain a chocolate as if we were invisible. That's when we walked out. I will never come back to this place. Rude treatment of a certain segment of your clientele is not how you stay in business. read more

What an absolutely precious gift shop! It's small so you really do need to step in to truly witness all they have. Like any great space they focus on just a few things but they do them all well. So this is an ideal spot to buy flowers (hence the name!) or to buy salts, chocolates, or small home goods. Essentially you can put together the best gift basket for someone here; a mother, a sister, a brother, the in-laws, etc. I was recently in Victoria, BC and met this super crazy chocolate expert. And this is relevant because I spotted a lot of those same chocolates in The Meadow. Things I recognized from all over the world! They also have local chocolates and even Theo Chocolate from Seattle. (Woo!) Very interesting and extensive collection. In fact, you can ask for advice and help in choosing what to buy if you don't know a lot about chocolate because they do. When shopping here I was looking for local and so I picked up some bars from a chocolatier based in Brooklyn. For people who want to find dark chocolates, they even have a whole shelf dedicated to 10-% chocolate - crazy! I'm not into anything too dark so I've never gone above 70% but it left me super curious to try more and see what else is out there. The salt wall is similar to the chocolate offerings. They've got rubs, table salts, and types of salt from all over the world. All labeled and ordered beautifully. They sell gift packs of salts from around the world, they sell pink salts, black salts, and even salt planks for prepping fish and other foods. I believe I also spotted salted glasses (shot glasses) for sipping tequila and other spirits that taste great with a salted kick. Super cool. For a store thats about 400 sq feet, they seem to be able to fit in enough to keep your eyes busy for an hour. Very cute! read more

Great selection of chocolate bars and salts. I only browsed the chocolate section, so this review pertains only to that. Prices are about what you'd expect for high end chocolate. Displays were organized and tidy, making it easy to check exactly what was there. Two drawbacks, though. First, I'm reluctant to pay $10 for a chocolate bar without a nibble. I realize giving out free chocolate is not their M.O., but I'd like to know what I'm spending my money on. There must be a way to do this without being a giveaway. At least have a few "featured" items that can be tasted so we know what we're buying. In addition, or perhaps in lieu of tastes, it would be nice if there was a short description of the items. Sort of like how some cheese shops describe the cheeses, or even some wineries. Fruity, nutty, bitter, etc. You can extract some of this from the labels, but additional insight would also give me the confidence that my purchase is something I'd like. I walked out empty handed because I didn't have the energy to get into a discussion with the clerk about the different items. I would have made a purchase if I had been able to better evaluate them on my own. I may return when I am in the mood for chocolate AND conversation. read more

Such a lovely shop in West Village. They have 3 high shelves for 3 items: chocolate, salt, and bitters. None of the things that you buy here will be found at another grocery store. I didn't know what the uses of them, but I had a happy Salt Tasting day at The Meadow. Apparently they have various infused and flavored sea salt around the US and around world. Each salt has a distinctive taste that even a non-chef like I can tell. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. One staff explains to me what flavors to expect from each part of the world. It was like walking into a wine bar and listening to wine stories from a bartender. We don't know whether the stories are true, but we certainly think they are legit and interesting. read more

The Meadow has it all! The chocolate selection was a bit over my head, but I am a bit of a chocolate philistine. What I really liked was their salts selection, it was hard not to buy everything. I stopped in on valentines day and they had a lovely selection of fresh cut flowers that they'd arrange into a bouquet for a reasonable price. The two people I interacted with were so helpful and friendly, making sure I was taken care of and offering their recommendations on different foods. I saw their chocolate club signage and thought it'd be a great gift for my parents. You can purchase a membership in three month increments, averaging around $30 a month. My dad called me up when he got his first box, commenting on the wrapping and presentation, and the intricacy of the tasting notes. a friend once said that i love salt so much that i could drink fish sauce. highly unlikely but i do enjoy salt. Meadow is an AWESOME shop filled with salt! The right wall is stacked from floor to ceiling with all kinds of salt: sea salt, gray salt, flake salt, rock salt, smoked salt, infused salt, chef salt, curing salt, salt rocks, Himalayan salt slabs, shrimp, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp...oh ignore those last three, i was channeling my inner forest gump. do all salts taste the same? absolutely not! the moisture, mineral and crystal qualities of each salt will provide a different flavor and texture. if you want to try the salts sold at the meadow, you are totally welcome to. and when youre ready to take some home but can't make up your mind they have salt sampler sets to take home. the different salt sampler sets range in price from about $ 24- $52. In addition to salts there is a large selection of bitters* to choose from. They are also available (and encouraged) to sample. I tried a handful of different bitters and walked away with the classic angostura bitters but I will be returning to pick up the baked apple bitters which will be fantastic when added to gin and apple cider =D. ah yes, theres chocolate too. all different kinds...now, im not a big chocolate fan but i did try a salted caramel- good lord. the salt enhanced the chocolate to the nth power, it was way too much for me... if youre in the hood drop by, its totally worth it. *bitters are a liquid concentrate that usually contain different aromatic herbs, tree bark and/or fruit. a couple of drops/dashes will add a different flavor to cocktails (i.e. old fashioned) thanks rachel a. for reminding me to explain what they are! read more
