OKalustyan's I'm very familiar with Kalustyan''s Spice Shop. They have it all! I used to use spices on my food. I can't tolerate most spices after stomach surgery. Recently I am introducing more and more because I love the taste. No doubt I eat a lot of TUMs but it's worth it some days. In the past I've had the Marhaba Mayan Tropical Sea Salt purchased here. I'm very fortunate to have a Yelp gift of the same Sea Salt without making a trip to the store. Here is the quote from the package. This store is amazing, they have everything you could think of spice-wise, and then they have more! Baking stuff, beans, spices, seasoning mixes, protein options, everything you need for making your own tea, bitters, olive oils, and still so much more! I was shocked to see just how big this shop was, there's an upstairs section, and then the aisles kept coming. Everytime you thought you were coming to the end, there was a little maze that took you somewhere new. We spent almost an hour in here, and if we weren't heading home the next day and limited on suitcase space, we could've spent even more time browsing and buying. We ended up getting a variety of seasoning blends, lentils, bitters, powdered cheese and egg whites, and some spices. Can't wait to start cooking with all of it! I wanted za'atar for a recipe and stopped by this NY institution. I didn't look around much but this place is a museum of spices. They have everything that you can imagine and then some. There were three or four varieties of za'atar. I would have been lost without google. Saw some zhug and couldn't resist. They have an extensive selection of spices, teas, pastries and packaged goods. I also took the chance and got puffed quinoa and butterfly popcorn. The main highlight for me was getting the fruit caviar which is coveted and rare to find in NYC. It's in the frozen section. The store has pretty much anything you're looking for. However, I was unhappy about a couple of things. First, I was overcharged $10 on a product. The price on the product itself says $29.99, but the price on the shelf said $19.99. I didn't notice until I got to my destination that I had been overcharged. When I called the store, I was told that I should have noticed when the cashier rang up the product. I suppose I should have; nonetheless, I'm unhappy about how this was handled. Whoever answered the phone conceded that the price on the shelf indicating $19.99 should have been removed. Second, I was hoping to purchase some quince jam. All of the packages of the quince I wanted were three months past the "sell by" date, so I didn't get any. I realize that the sugar in the jam preserves the product, but at three months past the sell by date, the product was already old. I had heard many good things about Kalustyan's and made a special trip there on my one day in New York. I was impressed by the number of products but was overall disappointed. read more

Heard about it when searching for an Indian spice shop when visiting NYC but Padma Lakshmi wrote about the store in her preface of her spice encyclopedia too (and for the history buffs, it's also located in the former home of President Chester Arthur). My foodie partner was in heaven. We spent over an hour there. Found all kinds of spices he'd never heard of and he picked up some that we have a harder time finding back home. Spanning 2 floors of 3 connected buildings, it offers an encyclopedic range of spices, herbs, sauces, condiments, and teas from Asia and other parts of the world. Much of the store's selection is under their own label, including its owner brand Marhaba. You'll find products from every continent except Antartica, including some truly exceptional specialty items hard to find elsewhere. While much of Kalustyan's items are shelf-stable, they do offer truly some exquisite fresh, prepared, refrigerated and frozen products. What I especially appreciate on Kalustyan's and Marhaba branded ingredients are the on-pack descriptions of what that item is and may be used for, coming in handy where there may be multiple formats or varieties of an item. Plus, the helpful staff are ready to assist you in navigating your shopping experience. If you enjoy cooking or just are a foodie, Kalustyan's is a destination to explore. I went with my boyfriend when it was too cold to be outside in NYC, and we spent an hour walking through the aisles of spices, teas, dried mushrooms and flowers, kitchen equipment, and much more! While this grocery store definitely has the largest selection of spices and teas I've ever seen, it was also fairly expensive for cooking spices. About a week ago, we decided to go into the city for lunch. It was a beautiful Sunday so after lunch we walked around "little India" which is by 26th Street and Lexington Ave. My husband and I stepped in this store to what they were selling. We browsed through the many aisles, they seemed endless. Shelves were filled with spices, nuts, spice mixtures, cooking sauces, teas, coffee beans, frozen entrees, ice cream, and more. I don't think there's enough space here for me to list everything we saw that day. I was shocked at all of the items that were available. One thing is for sure, they had all of the spices we needed to make biryani.I don't have to go to NJ to get them anymore. Some of the prices were big but I guess that's Manhattan for you. The staff were friendly and helpful when we asked where certain ingredients were located. You should visit this store if you haven't checked it out yet. read more

A million years ago, in the mid 80's when I lived nearby on 33rd & 2nd Ave, Kalustyan's was a treasured museum of amazement. In those days, it was impossible to find such luxurious spices, dried fruits, herbs & treats in the US. Sure, I traveled to Turkey and had exceptional Turkish Delight, Halvah, teas & spiced dishes. But not here really and I was not up near Fairway or Zabar's in those years, not yet aware of Penzy's. Now, almost 40 years later, while amazingly vast & well stocked, not as amazing. A small yet nice selection of cookbooks. Still, a nice destination to wander through the vast isles of dried peppers, & mushrooms, salt & pepper, spices & teas. The aroma is delightful, sight of the sweet treats inviting. A must if you are a cook or foodie and in the area. I wonder how they move the huge inventory, items that may not be as popular. This place is like the museum of herbs and spices. I was awestricken by the plethora and expansive collections of all kinds of herbs, spices, dried fruits, condiments and sauces of all kinds! Walking in here made me feel like I was getting an education in herbology, botany and culinary arts. There were so many things that I didn't know even existed on earth! Super spacious inside. It's the land of plenty and abundance. They have a full case of freshly made Lebanese, Turkish, Israeli, Greek, Indian desserts (baklava, halva, and more!) by the cash register - which I'm very intrigued by and will be back for! They have a huge selection of premade food. I tried the baba Ganoush and Rose Petal labne and absolutely loved both! Would love to try all the other items! The baba Ganoush is one of the best I've had - I especially love that it's a mix of mashed and eggplant chunks. The chunks preserved the eggplant texture and gave the whole dish some extra body and depth with added sophistication to the overall texture. Lebne is strained yogurt - even thicker than Greek yogurt. Super thick and decadent - almost like sour cream/cream cheese. The rose petals add a beautiful floral scent and flavor and you can see the actual rose petals - so pretty! Their freezer sections especially ice cream was very impressive! The Heritage Saffron Kulfi is very creamy and has a unique saffron flavor. I was intrigued by the Persian ice cream (saffron and rose ice cream) - I've heard about their infamous stretchy/chewy texture. I was also amazed by the exotic flavors. Tried the lavender flavor and soy ice cream. Both so have that stretchy/chewy texture which was really fun. The soy ice cream has pistachios which adds some fun texture. The lavender ice cream has the soothing fragrant lavender flavor/taste. Unfortunately though, both the Persian Ice Cream were way too saccharine for me that I can feel the osmosis in my mouth from the first spoonful...they have many other Asian Ice Cream that I'm very intrigued to try! read more

I am lucky to live in a city with a very good spice store, but it doesn't hold a candle to Kalustyan's. This magical place is part grocery store, part spice emporium, and part candy store. Heavenly shop with every spice imaginable. Came here to pick up some garam masala and came out with yellow curry powder as well and a desire to buy/ try everything in the shop. Kalustyan's has many sections, each with the widest range of spices that you can imagine. All spices are alphabetized within the section, making it pretty easy to find anything you want. It can be overwhelming, so I'd recommend knowing what you want to get before coming here. It's a bit pricey, but there are honestly some spices here that I just can't find anywhere else, so having them all in one location is amazing. The aisles are a bit narrow and not great for social distancing, so I'd also recommend that you know what you want so you can pop in and out rather than loitering. I will definitely be coming back and using the place to inspire my next dish! read more

A quick review doesn't cover what range and depth of what's going on in this wonderland. So, for those who might be looking for the same things I am, here is the list of items that I always get when I come through: 1. Saffron and Rose ice cream (those who have been to place in LA are screaming for joy) 2. Preserved lemons in saffron and olive oil. I probably buy this every week or so. 3. Greek honey and other Grecian spices/cheeses. I don't have to go out to Queens to get some staple items. 4. Vietnamese and Jamaican curry powder. Wow - this place really has everything. And I was also surprised they actually have products from every region. Like ofc a lot of Indian items but also a lot from Israel, chinese, Japanese, etc. Getting into the store was a bit confusing because the store spands to almost half the block with lots of doors. The correct entrance door is the one closest to the corner. The ground level is like an escape room, in that you can go deeper and deeper by making a left turn, and will find frozen section and fridge section, and more snacks and etc, everything.
