Really great place to get any kind of spice you can think of. The workers are surprisingly really nice and helpful. Guy at the register gave me some recommendations for spices for my lentils. The selection is huge, prices are decent, maybe not the best place for buying a large quantity but if you need some curry or masala powder for a quick couple meals, it's great. They have spices all along the wall, and many which I've never even heard of. Indian, middle eastern, wide variety. Their sweets are very good too. I got one of the sweets in the front case and the guy gave me one for free. They also have samosas in the front case. Before I bought one, I asked the guy if they were fresh/made that day because with those cases, it's usually a guessing game how long they've been there. He said "yes!" In a very jolly way and the first thing that came to mind was YEAAA IIIIIGHT. I took a chance and bought one though, and it was indeed warm and tasted great, excellently spiced so I'm happy I took the chance. Updating my review to add that they are just SO nice - I went in before work tonight to grab cumin, coriander seeds, and mango purée. They gave me a discount on the mango purée (maybe since I bought two?) and gave me 2 samosas for free. (They were no longer warm but still very delicious). They were super friendly and helpful as soon as I walked in, and I felt really welcome. Located in the heart of Curry Hill (Lexington Ave area of Murray Hill on manhattan's east side). Stopped by this shop looking for Diwali sweets and they were very busy. A quick walk around the shop looked pretty organized with spices, Indian foods, and other misc items. I got a box of 10 assorted sweets for about $10. They were great! I've come to the spice corner a couple times, and they're always very friendly here. They typically let me try some of the dried fruit items before I purchase them, and all the products are of decent quality. Specifically, I like to buy the dried mango here, and sometimes also buy the chilli powder, which goes really well with curry. There isn't too much more to add to this place. They really have a huge, range of spices, so you'll definitely be able to find what you want. They only take cash, and are along the curry hill row. The manager is a pretty nice guy, and you'll probably be able to find the spice you want here. If you don't Kalyustan's is just next door, so you'll be able to pop over there instead. read more

I've been shopping here consistently since 1996, a year after this store opened, and have been consistently getting what I want with consistent STELLAR costumer service. Worried about running out of spices that keep us healthy during Coronavirus? Come to Spice Corner, my friends! During the Covid-19 lockdown in New York City, all the Turmeric and black pepper was sold out due to these spices' medicinal properties. Amazon Prime was out of spices (regarding a timely delivery), but right here on Lexington Avenue, you had an AMAZING clerk hooking you up with BIG FAT packs of Turmeric (organic or regular). The staff speaks fluent English and Bengali, understands Urdu and Hindi...and also has multilingual (Desi multilingual) printed labels. If you ask for a specific spice in only one language, there are plenty of translation services to help. For people new to South East Asia cooking, who love Indian or Pakistani or Guyanese food, but don't know what they are doing in the kitchen, I recommend an "old fashioned" hardcopy cookbook called The Indian Vegetarian by Neelam Batra. Author Neelam Batra explains how to mix spices into masalas/curries. If you like curry and want to take Curry In A Hurry or Haandi home, Batra is helpful. Spice Corner is one of the few stores in New York City's Manhattan that sells all spices in Batra's book and your food comes out homemade, far better than any restaurant ...and also HEALTHY. If you hate Virgo-OCD-style cooking, Spice Corner also sells pre-mixed curry masala powder created by Shan (with better prices than Amazon). Spice Corner also sells these hard-to-find-here Serrano peppers. I also buy Chapati (chick pea) flour (for frying up bread) and Chutney here. The negatives? Products sold here are not as cheap as you might find in India, Guyana, or Pakistan. Because Spice Corner is on the island of Manhattan, it aint cheap and the store space is small. Suggestion? A lot of people new to cooking and South East Asian cuisine are intimidated by the vast selection of spices and never had to think about making EVERYTHING (even bread) from scratch. They call it spice corner, but to me, it's truly a dessert corner! There are so many types of Indian desserts to shop here and you can see them right next to the cash registrant. As an Asian, the best compliment that we could give to dessert is "it's not sugary". I know this is so paradox but true. You may think Indian desserts are not the best because they are too sweet, especially the orange spiral one... come here and try some better ones and your impression will be changed. I love this store. It is the best gem in the city. It is very small but impressively housing almost everything you need to prepare for an authentic Indian meal. Besides the variety of the species, the owners are sweet and friendly! During my short 30-min visit, they offered to help me pick out the right curry, offered me a samosa snack, and sweet dates. When I checked out, they gave me a soap they sell for $3.99 and encouraged me to try it as they really like it themselves. I'm blown away by their kindness and will definitely come back. Even for the tea enthusiasts, myself included, one would be delighted to find whole cardamom for brewing a pot of aromatic chai. The gentleman behind the counter gave us several complimentary samples, when he noticed I was eyeballing the colorful confections behind the glass display case. I appreciated the unexpected gesture, as there are very few New Yorkers who practice this type of generosity. "Try some!" he said brightly, plucking out pieces from a tray with a pair of tongs, quicker than I could react. Before I knew it, he handed over an assortment to me, wrapped in thin paper. Holding the bundle of porous squares in my palm, I was surprised that they were pieces presented in their entirety, not something nominally pinched or cut off a block to bait the customer, hoping to leave them wanting more. While the elements of these bite-sized desserts were simple -- milk, rosewater and sugar -- they tasted exceedingly sugary. As a foodie, however, it's always nice to try something new and dissimilar from what I am used to, particularly when offered in such a hospitable manner. As this is an ethnic store, they may carry items that are not typically found at your regular grocer or supermarket. If you reside in the area or happen to be planning to tackle an Indian recipe, do fetch your grocery list. This is an authentic grocery store that sells Indian/Bangledeshi groceries as well as desserts in the display near the register. The people at the register were just plain awesome. This store is so overshadowed by 'big' Kalustyan's few doors away. Just a couple days ago, I persuaded my friend to come with me to this favorite store of mine. Though smaller and have less variety than Kalustyan's, the prices are better here for comparable items. My friend actually found what she was looking in this store, that was not available from big K. The owner gave us a generous portion of dessert for us to sample. He called it 'Indian Halvah', really delicious, and creamy...if I had a sweet tooth, I would have bought a pound, or two. After walking ten miles or so in Manhattan in and out of the rain while nursing a cold, I remembered my friend the dog walker's sovereign remedy: hot pepper and ginger. I accordingly ambled in here--it was getting a bit late, and the other spice shops on the block had closed for the day--and studied all the interesting offerings, finally choosing a bag of hot organic Turkish red pepper. I took it over to the counter and also asked to buy a small piece of ginger; the guy offered me one. I asked for a smaller one and he found one and gave it to me for free. Somehow they manage to pack a huge variety of spices, beans, rice, etc. into a tiny store, and also have harder to find ingredients like fresh paneer.
