Love going to Trader Joe's for many of their organic, healthy, gluten free, dairy free and soy free products. The staff is always helpful to help locate any items you can't find. The store is neatly organized and clean, provides disinfecting wipes for customer use near the shopping cart and basket area, which allows shoppers to clean cart and basket handles. The store can be very busy. I recommend going off hours on weekdays if you want to get in and out easily. read more

Out of all the Trader Joe's locations in the city, this one might be my least favorite. It's so, so small, so trying to find what you're looking for often means items are located in weird sections (like coffee and tea on top of the freezer aisle). I made the mistake of coming here on a weekend, and this place was absolutely packed. I quickly grabbed the few items I came for and waited on a line that wrapped around half the store. Luckily it moved decently quickly. My cashier checked me out in record speed, and I was able to grab one of those Trader Joe bags in blue that everyone has been walking around with which have been hard to come by at my local Trader Joe's in LIC. If this is the closest Trader Joe's to you then you'll have to make due, I would just recommend coming here at off hours if you can. read more

This Trader Joe's needs work. I've lived in different parts of the city over the years, and this is by far my least favorite location. I always go into any TJ's expecting a crowd, that's not the problem. Stock is consistently low and restocking boxes and crew seems to always be blocking the aisles, with items sitting on the sidelines instead of making it to the shelf. It stinks to go in expecting something to be there that isn't- I've tried different days and times and it continues to be a problem. But my biggest complaint is while their music is a nice throwback, it's blaringgg loud and makes the experience only more chaotic. Let me start by saying the staff is wonderful and I agree that they stock up relatively well. My issue with this location is the operation of the store. Every time I seem to go it is so crowded that you have to wait in line just to walk down any aisle and your cart clips every other cart you walk by. Sometimes I have to leave my cart in a corner somewhere and go on without it because then at least I can squeeze through carts faster. They have two lines that wrap around the store (I was just there at 1pm today on a Friday and the lines were winding around the store) .. and the people on the lines cover the entire frozen section so you can't even see what's in the refrigerators and when you need to reach in to grab something, you always have to ask someone who's on line to move. It's so unacceptable and if there were a comparable option in the area, I'd absolutely go there. There needs to be a limit enforced as to how many people can shop at a time, not only for comfort, but also for safety. I know I've seen this enforced at other TJs, and this location really needs to follow suit. If the current allowance doesn't exceed the limit, then they need to lower the limit and not be so greedy trying to shove in as many shoppers as possible. So fed up with the greed. read more

I come here almost every lunch break -- this is one of the most well-run Trader Joe's I've been to. The staff do a good job to make sure the lines are orderly and moving. I also love how they handled the recent canvas bags release. Limiting to 2 per person really showed they wanted everyone to have a chance. read more

This TJ's location is great, similar to the other locations in Manhattan. There's an escalator to go up and down and there's also benches there to sit down. Staff is super friendly as always, however the line here is always super long. No matter what time of the day you go it wraps around a bunch of times, it does move quick though but since the location isn't super big, it gets kinda crazy. This Trader Joe's is very different from other locations in that it is located in the basement of an apartment building called the Future. My cousin's mother-in-law owns a condo upstairs and it's a really upscale building. These days you might encounter a line to get in that wraps around the corner. You might get lucky and just cruise in the entrance and take the escalator downstairs. Because space is limited down here, the aisles are narrower than what you might see at other TJ's, so they use the shortened double-tiered basket shopping carts here with the tight turn radius. One thing that irks me is when people leave their shopping carts in the middle of the aisle blocking traffic. Just park it to the side willya?! You can pick up your fresh veggies and fruits as you enter the first aisle, but be on the lookout for how long the check-out line gets. It will snake through the store before you know it and the tail end is found by the associate holding the arrow down sign saying "This is the end of the line". If you're familiar with the layout of the store, you can get on line right away and just cruise through certain aisles to pick up stuff as you are waiting, like the chips, snacks and bread. It usually doesn't go by the meat, dairy or frozen cases, so hit those before getting on line. I like the spatchcocked chicken if you can find it. Once you get to the checkouts, an associate at the head keeps everything flowing and will direct you to a register. There's really not a lot of room down here for regular supermarket type checkouts, so they use little island kiosks and every one of them is manned (womanned?) and ready. Don't forget to bring your reusable shopping bags or they will charge you for paper shopping bags. Once you're through checkout, hop on the up escalator and you're out of there! read more

This is a good sized Trader Joe's. You have to descend an escalator to get to the store. They had a good selection of produce, although it wasn't the freshest. Very reasonably priced cheese. I've been going to this Trader Joe's since August, and it's well run and well-equipped for COVID and social distancing. You're likely to wait in line outside before going in, but the line moves quickly. They're usually well-stocked and have tons of cashiers. Don't be discouraged if you get in the check out line and it wraps around the entire store. You'll be out of there in no time. Do you like long lines? Do you like lines that don't seem to have a beginning? Do you like lines that, when you find the beginning, allow you to traverse an entire store? Well then, you certainly are in luck. Though I am sadly not exaggerating about the line situation during peak hours, thankfully, no matter how long the line, it always moves quickly. There are always plenty of registers open at any give time, so your wait will be deceivingly short. This TJs has a small footprint but still crams in just about everything you'd expect to see. The layout is a little funky, and given the line situation the frozen food aisle can be a little tricky to navigate, but most times you'll find exactly what you need. This is my "grab stuff to bring on the PATH after work (these days on the 1-2 times a week I'm at the office in person) but only what fits in one bag" TJs, so I've never done a full shop. It's very likely items are missing, especially noticeable if you usually frequent a larger store. The suggested order: produce first, then meat, then dry goods -- a quick stop at dairy, then bread, then either get in line and navigate the frozen aisle as you slowly ooze towards the registers, or, in the case of a nonexistent line, peruse the final section at your leisure before hitting the register. Snacks? Chips? Not to worry. Those essentials are conveniently located right where you'll be waiting in line to check out. Beer, too. Cheers to that! read more

Still the most convenient Trader Joe's in terms of location, but I've noticed there's been inconsistencies with items being in stock as of late. Depending what day and time of day I go, the shelves will vary from bone bare to semi-stocked. Thankfully the layout doesn't change too much here, so I can usually find what I need without too much bumper cart action. Lines move relatively quickly, although I so wish they would bring back pandemic limits to the number of people in the store at one time. Guess that ship has sailed! If too crowded, I'll shop in line, since daring to stand in one spot perusing too long will earn you dirty looks and huffy sighs. Ahh New Yorkers. Never a moment to spare. Organized. Efficient. I would not use them for fish/seafood or my style yogurt but they get the job done and also have unique items like their homemade fresh pizza dough or their fruit selection such as loose pomegranate seeds. They have a great flower selection. They are some times out of a certain cheese or other random item but they restock them within a day. The prices are very competitive. Three years later, the lines keep moving very quickly, thanks to the expeditor and about 30 registers for checkout! They also do a very good job of keeping the shelves well stocked considering how busy this location is on a daily basis. I really appreciate TJs for their very competitive pricing on all goods: produce, snacks, fruit, fromage de chèvre, buratta, hummus, smoked salmon assortment, fresh or prepared chicken, yogurt, green juice, soups, sauces, dressings and their tremendous variety of Trader Joe's frozen foods that cover practically every taste and cuisine. It should go without saying that a visit to a New York Trader Joe's requires the strategy, deftness, and speed of a contestant on Supermarket Sweep. I'll never forget the time I watched someone dart into the Union Sq TJoe's expecting to grab one item, pay and dart right out and ask with the incredulity of someone who is definitely not from here if the line of people snaking around the entire length of the store could possibly be the line to pay. We're not in a conga line, hon. I don't talk like this IRL. This Murray Hill location has one of the better layouts of a city TJoe's, which is to say, the aisles are still narrow and you still have to keep it moving-- no lingering to read labels and no time for indecision around here!--but it's pretty big, the shelves are kept tidy and the staff are always so helpful. The direction of the lines make sense and move very fast. During the pandemic they limit the number of people in the store somewhat, resulting in perpetual lines on any given day of the week. It's nice that they do this because the stores have felt a little less crowded than usual. I'd recommend getting there right after senior hour ends at 9am (unless of course you're a senior and can benefit from their 8am-9am senior shopping hour) to avoid the lines that usually start around 10am. Have a gameplan, maybe bring a buddy to wait in line as you shop, and bring a reusable tote to carry your groceries in. You'll be skipping out with your low cost, high quality groceries in no time. read more

2/21/2023 - Just wanted to give a quick shout out to Rosemary, who was the #21 cashier today. I've had more interesting conversations checking out at Trader's Joe's which makes shopping there so unique. Rosemary was efficient and professional and her positivity was so refreshing, especially on a dreary day. I also wish I got the name of the Trader Joe employee who joined my turkey meatball search party with me and had a great backup recommendation. [Quick bizarre side note: The Trader Joe's employee recommended the chicken meatballs. Only caveat: They have rosemary and I told him I'm not really a fan. And who was my cashier today? Rosemary! This TJ's is extremely convenient for me and is also located on 3rd AVE in the heart of Murray Hill. I have noticed that weekday nights is when the lines are not as busy, but if you hit a busy time you can be waiting on a line to check out that is wrapped around the store. This is a much smaller Trader Joe's compared to the ones I've previously been to, but good for the basics. They have a good selection of seasonal items, but those tend to sell out fast. read more

I think it's important to give credit where credit is due. With that being said, I shopped here today and had the pleasure of being in Glenn's line. He was kind, fast and he asked me if I'd be walking with the bags-- I said yes, and he took the time (yet quickly) to even out the weight of each bag for me! Love me some TJ's. Similar to the 72nd and Broadway UWS location, this TJ's entrance is an escalator from the ground floor down to the basement level. The ceilings are kinda low in this location so not great for really claustrophobic people, but the aisles are generally wide enough that it's not too cramped nowadays during covid, especially since during busier times they limit the number of people in the store. The layout is probably one of the smaller locations, but still encompasses all the regular TJ's offerings--flowers and small plants, produce and deli, meat, dairy, dry foods, herbs/spices/sauces, snacks and other pantry items, baked goods, frozen foods, beverages, and a smallish home goods section. Like other TJ's they carry seasonal items from fruits and veg to frozen entrees, desserts and Christmas trees and wreaths in December. Their wide range of affordable greeting cards are a treat too. Most importantly in covid times, I love the helpfulness and positive attitudes of the staff, and the ample sanitizing wipes available for wiping down your mini-shopping carts or basket handles. Locals flock to Trader Joe's, because of its proximity, affordability, and quality of products. During Covid-19, they do a great job of only having a set number of customers in the store. I felt safe. What's great is that the prices are a lot less than DAG, or Morton Williams (literally highway robbery). I always wonder, when visiting Manhattan, where everyone shops for their groceries. This is evidently one of those places, and it looks like everyone decides to visit here all at the same time too. I've never seen volume of customers set to "Ludicrous." Then again, small-town me rarely visits TJ's beyond Danbury, Albany, and the Boston suburbs, so really I'm just not used to it (for my next trick, I'll go back outside and gawk at skyscrapers). I've never had to deal with "school crossing guard" type employees in a grocery store. But I can see why. The quality and quantity of the inventory is great, everything was plentiful and looked really fresh. Since all of the registers will be open, the wait is probably just a minor nuisance. If I lived locally, I'd probably visit the local grocers for all the interesting stuff (and it's probably more competitive prices too), but this place is dependable. read more

I don't WANT to review this location because I think it's probably the city's best kept TJ secret, but yet here I am. This location happens to be the closest to my office so I'll walk here after work and do my grocery shopping. I moved to NYC 3 years ago and have found that TJs is the most reasonably priced grocer in the city. A lot of the other grocers are more specialty and definitely hirer priced. In general, shopping at a TJs in NYC can be a nightmare. Cue lines the second you walk in the door. Having to shop while being in a line the whole time is just not fun. I have shopping ADD so I often go down the same aisle 2 or 3 times thinking of something I didn't remember the first pass or two. I know making a list would help but isn't half the fun of TJs discovering new products? Can't do that without wandering! The nice thing about this location is there isn't the immediate line once you enter. At most, on a super busy day, the line might wrap two - maybe three - aisles. But a lot of the time, it's only a straight shot from freezer to checkout. I've even been here...wait for it....with NO LINE on a Friday. I guess no one shops then. It was a TJs miracle, I tell ya. I'd love if they could increase their beer section. They used to carry Not Your Father's Root Beer, but I haven't seen it for quite some time. Their prices on beer are better than local grocery stores too so I'm resigned to paying a couple dollars more at another store if I want that beer. I love all of their seasonal products which make me sad as soon as they sell out - particularly the pumpkin cranberry crisps. They need to be year round! And the pickle popcorn! So many good things at TJs honestly. And I think it's great that if you ever don't like something, you can bring it back for a refund. No questions asked. I haven't done that personally but it's nice to know it's an option. Oh and they recycle shopping bags. They have a drop off thingy on the street level inside the entrance. Also bring your own bags and you can enter their bag lotto. They do a weekly lotto for a gift card and free reusable bag. I won once so now I never forget.
