I bought a 97 Honda Civic Del Sol in unheard of stock-mint condition, but the stereo system was totally unworthy of the car. In addition, one door had keyless entry but not the other. I took the car to an audio shop in Herndon, and spent a good bit of money to upgrade the 4 speakers. That didn't achieve the results I wanted. So I went back and they added a new tuner, a subwoofer that took up a third of my trunk, and amps behind the seats as well. I still didn't like the results, AND I lost my ability to use the trunk and put the seats back. But I was done sinking money into it, so I decided against any additional work.
The following winter, long story short, I fried the car's motherboard, and in the process blew the fuses and potentially parts of the stereo as well. The repair shop recommended Safe & Sound to resolve the audio issues. We agreed to have S&S look the whole car over to see what my options would be for a stereo replacement. I was tired of hating the stereo I had, and I wanted keyless entry on both doors.
I got a call within 24 hours explaining their findings, and it was basically just a fuse problem. We scheduled a keyless install and fuse replacement, and then we spoke about their thoughts and ideas on what I "could" do to get the sound quality I wanted. They clearly understood the challenges, parts, and configuration of my tiny Del Sol, but they have solid experience in micro-sizing a system while maximizing audio quality. They presented three very different options and price points for reclaiming my trunk and seat mobility that could also get me to a happy place with the sound quality.
After discussing parts, pros, & cons, I selected the option with a stealth box manufactured to fit behind the Del Sol seats. When they ordered the box, they were informed that the box is no longer available. Heartbreak! Matt called me to discuss it, and S&S agreed to custom fabricate a similar stealth box for the car, and they agreed to cap the charges at the cost of the pre-made box I had selected.
Midway through, they sent me pictures of the work in progress. Amazing to see it unfold. And then I got a call - they discovered that the approach we agreed upon might stick out between the seats a quarter-inch more than I wanted, so they proposed an alternative solution, which I accepted. By this point, I felt I could completely trust them to recommend the right thing for my car. In addition, the in-door tweeter pods I really wanted were no longer available from Honda, but they'd found a pair on E-Bay in Japan (JDM Parts), and if I'd buy them, they'd install them - to save me money on product markup if they had to buy them. So I got those and dropped them off. Within a week, I picked up my car. And I am blown away by the results every time I drive it.
The door pods are perfectly installed and tuned. The custom stealth box, which was surprisingly affordable, allows my seats to go all the way back again. No more ugly amps back there, AND I have my trunk back! The woofers and amps are installed within the box, with just the pretty face of each woofer showing, and they look great. The box itself looks completely original - like it came with the car. The fabrication by Matt was simply amazing, and of "Overhaulin'" quality. Essentially I went from one big sub-woofer in the trunk to two smaller ones in the stealth box inside the cabin, and from no tweeters to the 2 door pods and from four "all purpose" speakers to one set from the prior install and one set replaced with a much better quality speaker. They also installed something inside the doors so now you can't hear a lot of ambient or road noise, and the pure, crisp audio really comes through. Both doors now have keyless entry and most important of all, when you look at this interior, you can't "see" anything that looks like "after purchase" add-ons. I am thrilled with the work.
As a final surprise, I had indicated in the beginning how much I really hated the stereo tuner/unit in the dash, and they talked me out of replacing it, which also saved a lot of money. As it turned out, I had a good one already, I just needed some training on how to use it. They provided that, and now I love it.
I got my car back in pristine shape, with a kicking stereo I really love, and at every step along the way, they kept me informed, helped me to make design decisions, and kept to the agreed-upon budget. I'd recommend them highly to anyone who's tired of not having the audio quality they really want. You may have to wait a little bit to get started on the project, but once you're in there, it's like you're the only customer they have. read more
