Stopped by here for some dinner, a table that arrived and ordered after us got their food before my table did. One of the employees tried delivering the wrong food to our table. When our food arrived the rice was dried out and hard and the nigiri did not have amazing flavor. The restaurant was super warm so it felt like maybe their ac was broken. Ryu is worthy of a 5 star review for their sushi. We have lived in Gilbert for 6 months and have tried every major sushi restaurant in the area. You know which ones I'm talking about. How we missed Ryu is a mystery. Ryu blows all of them away on the quantity of their sushi. Others in the area were ok, as the sushi didn't always seem as fresh as we were used to back east. Ryu is now going to be our go to for FRESH sushi. Great tasting rolls, good portioned nigiri, reasonable prices. All the things we want in our sushi bar. Came here for lunch w my dad. Wasn't bad. Service was a little slow and seemed to be one waitress but it wasn't crowded. I had the lunch chicken teriyaki (chicken, fried rice (+$2.50) and veggies) and a side salad. My dad hat the #2 bento lunch box (rice, California roll, steak bites, edamame, and combo tempura). Not Good. Don't waste your money here too many great choices nearby. They don't make proper rolls and skimp on portion sizes. California rolls crab (usually Krab) avocado and cucumber. Unfortunately this cook refuses to admit this and kept giving me a crab mix roll instead. For those who a lactose intolerant we do not eat mayo and per their advertise pic online it should not have been served like this after the cook arguing and remaking the same incorrect dish I asked for a refund. I will never go back and will suggest other places to my friends and colleagues. This is pure dishonesty. Where else are they cutting corners and giving you substandard Or incorrect product? The hostess came and asked us to pick up our plates as she was moving us "to a table where we would get our food faster". We were seated at a table in the rear of the restaurant on the side where there was shelving and not enough table to eat from, could get close enough to comfortably eat. Now as for the chef. I think we were chopped liver. Not once were we offer any sake, the others at the table were offered it. Not once did he offer to toss the shrimp in our mouths as he did the others. Had to ask the waiter for extra sauce. Then the waiter asked the others if they wanted ice cream but didnt ask if we would like some. I came to celebrate my 8year old son with 5kids, there's Terrible management, they overbooked for our 8:30 reservation. We had to wait an extra 30mins, while we watched them seat other people before us, then waited for our chef who saw a table full of kids who expressed there excitement, he did one volcano trick and nothing else, when I told management she made excuses about how he had been working all day and doesn't know how to entertain kids. My son was so sad and couldn't understand why our table was the only one to not get a "show" .. Management offered nothing for such a terrible experience. read more

The epitome of "more than meets the eye". We are avid Benihana fans but couldn't get a reservation, so we landed here. We walked in and definitely had the vibe of "Hmmm...not so sure about this place." But! Wow...truly amazing food. We had everything from the Spicy Tuna Shrimp Tempura roll (notably 'the best sushi ever' from our family member who lives in SANTA BARBARA), to filet, chicken, scallops, and shrimp. They were a little rude on the phone when I called. Was first put on hold for a long time so I hung up, then called back. Placed an order to go for Chicken Yakisoba (noodles). Fun place that has teppanyaki performances. Food is good enough for this kind of restaurant (saltier than average) and the portion size is huge! I shared a chicken + filet mignon meal with my boyfriend that included soup + salad, added his own soup + salad for $8, and upgraded our rice that came with the meal to fried rice for $3. I was able to take a meal size back home for lunch the next day even though my bf and I shared the actual meal (meat and fried rice). A girl was celebrating her birthday at my table and the chef used a large sauce bottle and poured sake into each person's mouth LOL. That was really surprising but pretty enjoyable if you're there to have fun. I appreciated the nice staff and the funny chef at our table. read more

Ryu is definitely a good option for Teppanyaki in the Gilbert area. We have been driving by for years and decided to stop in for date night. The servers were all very kind and friendly. The food was pretty good. My wife had the vegetarian option which she thoroughly enjoyed. I tried the chef's choice. Lobster, filet mignon, and shrimp. The filet was perfect unfortunately the lobster was a bit rubbery but it was still tasty. I would recommend Ryu for a fun night out with the family or a date night you won't be disappointed. Wow! My family and I have tried numerous sushi places here in Gilbert but this tops them all. We ordered our favorites but then one of the owners stopped by and made some recommendations! Try the Tammy Spoons and ask if Ann is around. Order whatever she tells you I promise you won't be disappointed. Plus she got our 13 year old daughter to eat a hand roll. Highly recommend this place. Ok so I thought this place was going to suck. There was no parking, sticky menus and we waited an hour after our reservation before our chef started cooking. There were dirty tray carts by our table and the prices are higher than my fave Japanese grill spot. But....The food was good and I strongly suggest the baked muscles. I had the NY steak and calamari. It was absolutely delicious. The fried rice and the veggies were delectable. I didn't care for the soup, salad or sushi starter tho. But the chef was funny and the owner was absolutely the sweetest and most grateful host. She gave my husband a free beer and I a hug because of the long wait and thanked us at the end of our meal. So, I was torn between a 3 and a 4 star rating but if u don't already have a place that u love, this will do. Don't miss out on the calamari at the teppan table, it is superb. read more

Had an enjoyable meal here at this establishment. There service was welcoming and prompt. All the rolls we got were enjoyable. We did note the "wasabi" was unusually colored which was a little strange. It also was quite warm inside but I'm sure it was because the teppanyaki grills were on and so their heat just took over. Brought the family here. Skipped the show and just grabbed a regular table. Service was fast, and very knowledgeable. Ordered a few appetizers. The fried calamari stole the show. Very thick, tender and moist cuts perfectly fried...highly recommended. Kids enjoyed their standard chicken teriyaki etc. I tried the Firecracker Roll. It's was outstanding. I came by today with my fiancé for his birthday and we ordered the chirashi don. Some of the FRESHEST fish I have ever put in my mouth and Ive been eating sushi forever, simply because my parents are both chefs-- and although I'm a self proclaimed food connoisseur, trust me when I say this place has some GOOOOD FOOD. Love how they treat you like family, smiles are everywhere. It's a warm, welcoming environment. And the reviews about the poor customer service and being kicked out for sitting there? Think about it. These people are probably the ones to overstay their reservation. A business is a business, don't loiter in there. Once you've paid, get ur booty out. Delicious food with a show! We have been here a few times for Teppanyaki with the family on special occasions. It's worth every dollar. The food is tasty and the customer service is excellent. I don't know if customer service in AZ is just at a lower standard, but this is an unprofessional I've ever been to. I paid with $100, the guy at the register couldn't seem to get the count right, so he short-changed me. I had to go back and they explained they didn't have any change. As opposed to telling me beforehand, they tried to sneak it by. After questioning this, they suddenly found change. Additionally, one of the rolls we received didn't look like the pictures in their menu or website. When we inquired, the chef said "This is how we make it" and was standoffish about it. All the while, the other employees are in a group talking about us. There will many other small issues that I would overlook in most situations, but there was a compounding effect. I hate complaining, I hate sending stuff back and I hate low-rating businesses. Especially during times when so many businesses are struggling to keep customers. But everyone has limits. read more

So I went here last evening with my family of 11 for my grandson's birthday party I was on a single tab but apparently that doesn't matter. when it came time for tabs my tab was way more than it should have been! The charge a mandatory tip up front on big groups. But all of us got a separate tap so this should never have happened! But everyone was leaving so I just tipped 20% as I always do. When I got home I realized I had been taken advantage of! I called today and they told me I have to come there and they will give me my tip back in cash! Why can't they just reimburse my card??? So tomorrow I will take a ride there which will cost me $5 in gas. There aren't many places that do this mandatory tip any longer because we hate it! And the Gov't taxes them at a higher rate that a normal tip. But they don't care because we will never be back! They take advantage of older folks like me and I totally despise that!!! Been here several times before and we have loved it - always been a place that appreciates their customers, However, we came on a Monday night and were greeted by a snot-nosed hostess informing us that we needed reservations. When we asked why, she said that's how they do things now. We need a reservation but she might be able to get us in on 30 minutes but we need a reservation. Seriously? Dinner shouldn't be this hard. Can you get us in or not? I don't need nor appreciate being lectured by someone who hasn't been working there longer than we have been customers. I've finally found a solid go-to for Teppanyaki. We've tried others in the valley and had complications, and disappointments. We called at 2pm on a Sunday inquiring to make 6 pm reservations for that night. They suggested 7pm instead, but I explained we had 2 small children and 7pm would be too late. They agreed and we made the 6pm reservation. I wondered if there would be a long wait and a huge crowd. We arrived at 5:50 and were promptly greeted and seated. The restaurant is quite small compared to the others we've dined at. The waitress was extremely kind and gracious. She was very friendly and helpful with our questions about sushi orders. Ice water magically appeared within moments of being seated. The kids ice water was served in to-go cups with lids ...thank you! Our orders were taken and we watched the chef cooking at table next to ours. Such entertainment and enthusiasm like I've NEVER seen before at a Teppanyaki restaurant. One of the diners got to get behind the grill and try the egg trick of launching the egg off the spatula and breaking the egg in mid air. It was hilarious . Then he was squirting sake in several diners mouths, putting sake on plates and setting the plates on fire chatting nonstop with the diners. Laughter and applause erupted constantly. Unfortunately our chef was not so interactive and didn't have all the bells and whistles the table next to ours experienced. However, the food was outstanding! This was the tastiest fried rice I've ever had at a Teppanyaki. The seafood and steak were also cooked to perfection. The service was absolutely amazing! Drinks were immediately refilled and several times we were asked if our food was okay. Our orders were steak, lobster and shrimp combos, chicken, and tuna. They allowed the 2 children to split a kids order which was much appreciated. The only thing I would change is our chef. I wish I had inquired what his name was so we can request him at our next visit. read more

OK i did a review for this place when it was called Way Sushi and that place SUCKED. Now...this place is called RYU Sushi with new ownership and needless to say, my sushi experience there was one of the best I've had in the Gilbert area. I went with a few of my girlfriends for GNO (girls night out) night and I was so surprised on how tasty everything was and every single time I took a bite I was just like "WOW, this is so goodddd!" Their specialty menu is what got to me. All of them seemed so creative and delish! The specialty rolls I ordered was the Boo Ya Ka Roll (My favorite), Surf & Turf, Chimichanga, Basil, and their Spicy Tuna Pokie Salad. Everything was fresh and thoughtfully made. The ingredients for some of their special sauces they used in some of their rolls were well balanced and made it flavorsome. Their sushi rolls are pretty big too so it's definitely worth what you're paying for. Oh, make sure to leave some room for dessert and try their Pizookie! Yes...I said Pizookie! I was surprised too when I heard this. My girls and I killed it and when I went there again the 2nd time I took my bf and ordered the Pizookie as well and we devoured the deliciousness. Ryu, also has great happy hour drinks or specialty drinks! So that is also a plus! Their customer service was beyond superior. The lady owner there is super sweet and you could tell she really cares about her customers. She takes the time to talk to every table and makes sure you are enjoying your experience at Ryu. ( I love customer service like this) By the end of the night after 3-4 hours. Our GNO night ended up to be a Food Coma night...LOL. We were so full but happy full =) I highly recommend this place for sushi! We stopped in for a late lunch and everything was perfect. Service was excellent and friendly. Sushi rolls were delicious, but the sashimi was beyond expectations. It's been years since I've had salmon that was that good. I'm going to be craving that for awhile! The lunch specials are perfectly both priced and portioned too.
