Looking for a new spot for dinner tonight and stumbled upon this place. It's in the shopping plaza by Kohl's so it's not as big as you would expect for a teppanyaki place, but there are still a bunch of tables on the main dining side and 8 teppanyaki stations. There is no separation between the two styles of dining, so it gets pretty loud with the excitement over the chef's entertaining cooking (which also makes for a serious case of FOMO since we aren't in on the fun). Hubby ordered the gyoza, firecracker roll, and spicy tuna shrimp tempura. The gyoza was good but nothing special. The shrimp tempura roll had a ton of panko dumped on top and wasn't as spicy as he expected. The firecracker ($15 for 5 pieces) was tasty but also had an interesting mouth feel and texture with the fish wrap instead of seaweed. If you eat it with the lemon peel as recommend, the lemon overpowered the roll. He ate everything, but was just expecting more with all the reviews he read in advance. When we were placing our order, the waitress seemed to be rushing us and didn't write anything down so i quickly just ordered the veggie roll. As I was trying to find something to accommodate my specific dietary needs, everything I asked about was a "they don't do that." I finally landed on a side salad and veggie yakisoba. I asked for tofu to add some protein and again was told they don't do that, but then she came back out and said they would do it for me. The salad ($4) was just iceberg lettuce and some shredded carrots. The yakisoba was flavorful but barely had any veggies other than bok choy, carrots, and green onions. I had asked for a side of seasonal vegetables and was told they don't do that so l basically ended up having a bunch of noodles for dinner. We never saw our server again after my entree was dropped, but another server helped clear our plates and give us the check. Maybe we came on an off night or they are under-staffed, but we were pretty underwhelmed by the dinner. read more

Ryu is delicious and serves amazing sushi. It gets very busy so reservations are a must. We order takeout a lot and the staff is so friendly and thoughtful with packing the orders. We've also done teppanyaki and I prefer it to the other "big" one! Also don't miss their drinks! read more

I am a huge fan of Tempanaki and have been ever since I can remember. We are new to this side of town and tried a couple places and were honestly not impressed. We found Ryu on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I'm telling you, we were blown away. 10/10 recommend this place. Every single thing we ate was incredible! They put more of an effort to put on a fun show here compared to competitors. I feel like the price is a tiny bit steep. For 2 adult dinners and 2 kid dinners with one California roll appetizer and the fried rice upgrade, dinner was $150. It's a small business so I am all for it but as far as food goes, wasn't a fan of the mushroom broth or the salad dressing. The meat and fried rice are the same as competitors. They do add spinach here which was better than so much zucchini that they like to use for veggies. read more

We enjoyed the teppanyaki meal at Ryu Sushi & Teppanyaki. Before we ate that we order gyoza as an appetizer. These were the very best gyoza we have eaten in Arizona. They were cooked the right way, fried and then steamed, like they are in Japan. Chef Vincent was entertaining and quick in providing us the meals we had ordered. The meat and fish were seasoned very well and we loved the dipping sauce. All the food tasted good and our guests enjoyed the meal. read more

This place is a hidden gem. HOMEMADE WASABI.again. HOMEMADE WASABI! Not the paste crap. Every sushi roll I have gotten has been amazing, the real treat tho, seriously try the seared beef sashimi,ITS SO GOOD. The people are wonderful as well. This place has the best chicken yakisoba. Plenty of veggies and chicken. It's my #1 go to with a side of veggie fried rice, which is served in a VERY generous portion. The gyoza is also good as an appetizer. Once it hits the table, it's gone. We all love it. I'm not a sushi lover or eater but my son and husband love the sushi. It's really fresh and looks amazing. Son and husband, aside from getting some rolls to share, also love their spicy beef ramen. Sometimes the spice is there, sometimes my husband has to dig cayenne out of my purse, but the flavor is always good. The mochi is the ultimate finish every time. They sometimes run out, which shows how delicious it is. I don't recommend the green tea one, but the vanilla and strawberry one are yummy. My absolute favorite is the mango one!!! This place does do teppenyaki. I have yet to try it but it's always busy and looks like lots of fun. Reservations are required for that. Staff is always nice. They change every so often, but for the most part lately, it's been a lot of the same nice people. read more

We've been going here for years & love it. The portion sizes have definitely gotten much smaller (we used to be able to have leftovers for lunch the next day) & prices increased but what hasn't lately? The server we had on Sunday could care less about being @ work but our Teppanyaki cook was the best ever!!! We came here for lunch and I ordered the bento box with teriyaki chicken. The chicken was BAD. It tasted like it was microwaved. I mentioned to a worker walking by and her response was you must not like white meat. I actually eat white meat all the time but this tasted bad with a spongy texture. She finally said her cook must have over cooked it and then walked away. I found out later she was the owner. So disappointing. She did nothing... didn't offer to recook it... nothing. Not even an I'm sorry. I'm not picky and I couldn't eat it. Definitely will not be returning. read more

I've been here twice so far, my friend and I come and she always gets the chimichanga roll, it's a staple! However, I'm not sure why, but this time we felt very vERY full. Like over the top I can barely take another bite of sushi. But it wasn't too bad, I got the Barbie roll and and another roll that was very similar. My family has been going here for I don't know how long. Maybe 10+ years? We always sit at the bar and the business owners love my parents. I really enjoy the tepan grill. We got seated right away at 6pm. We sat on the dining room side but my daughter loves to watch the Teppanyaki onion volcanoes. My meal was so delicious! The Squid was perfect and the Ryu roll was exactly what I was in the mood for!! Will definitely be returning! read more

We had reservations for Teppanyaki here and were seated promptly on arrival. We decided to start with combo sashimi/sushi plate which came with nice assortments. However, most fish pieces used were of cheaper fish and/or quality. My favorite was the smoked salmon. The Teppanyaki was delicious. We had assortment of fish including sea bass, scallops and salmon. It was fun watching our chef cook the meal. He did load everything in lots of butter and garlic. I would recommend for special occasions. Our waiter was wonderful. read more

Awesome little sushi and hibachi spot! They have over 20 different types of sushi rolls and they have a large variety of raw fish. The orange roll is amazing! You must try it if you like yellowtail. As a vegetarian who is allergic to soy you can imagine the confusion I'm usually met with when I go for sushi. Ryu has not only ALWAYS accommodated my narrow ability to eat sushi, but does it with a sense of humor and acceptance that is truly amazing. Tonight I got the special gift of having a slow night equal direct attention from the sushi chef who took on the challenge happily and created the most delicious rolls I've had as a vegetarian. She blew my socks off. The other chef made my partner the most incredible vegetarian ramen and came out to discuss it with the same sense of humor and acceptance of the challenge with the level of happiness that made us feel appreciated. Every roll that came out was wrong and every time we asked the server to correct it they took it back and just added stuff to the top. Did a lot of tricks I've never personally seen before, his jokes were really funny and I really appreciated him double checking how we wanted our steak cooked since I can only have medium to well done steak as I'm pregnant. My girlfriend and I moved near this place from Scottsdale and became regulars quickly. We've done 2 birthday Teppanyaki dinners with great chef experiences. And if it's just a sushi night we've gotten great/unique rolls and servers are always friendly. Either experience comes at a surprisingly affordable price for the quality. I'm going to start off that I've been coming to this place for over 7 years, I always try to support a small business vs a larger corporation such as Benihana. Big mistake, same prices for crappy service and a crappy set up. I've known this for years but i still try to give them the business. Well.... Last night was the l last time I will be dining here. We made late dinner reservations for 7:40 to celebrate my nephew's 15 th birthday, big mistake. After waiting an hour to be seated with a reservation and waiting another hour before the kids at our table were even served drinks, we decided to leave at 10:00p because we still did not have a Teppanyaki Chef even show up to out table. They started mopping the sushi bar area and still we had no chef. We paid the $250 drink bill and left. Teppanyaki for the win for my youngest daughters birthday. She originally wanted to go for ramen for her big day and days before her birthday she said she wanted to do teppanyaki. I tried a few other restaurants and none could get us in at a decent time. Luckily, Ryu could fit us in at 7pm for a party of 4. We were promptly seated and waitress took order for beverages and dinner. We were served soup and salad that comes with the meal to start. The chef was ok, not very interactive like I'm used to. Tonight my husband and I took our kids to try Sushi for the first time and we decided to try this place for the first time and we were very happy with our experience and we will definitely be back! I ordered miso soup and combo tempura. I used to have an office in Tokyo in the Ginza district. So I can say I know Japanese food. This was the worst miso and tempura I have ever had, bar none. I frequently had lunch at ten ichi tempura, one of most well known tempura restaurants in Japan. I know what this should taste like. And this was terrible. This miso was luke warm and tasteless The tempura was drenched in oil, the vegetables were overcooked and soggy. The batter was was like goo, thick and not at all crisp. on the positive.
