So happy to have another breakfast restaurant downtown. Mobile is growing leaps and bounds. Food was good. Shrimp and grits was missing something. I added crystal hot sauce that was on the table and was like BAMMMM! That did it !!! Lol Thanks for being better that that other breakfast place on I-65. You know what I'm talking about. That country store. Ha ha. I'm so glad to have some other options in our wonderful PORT CITY. Options that are downtown. read more

We were in town to attend the University of Mobile's Christmas Spectacular and the lady at our hotel told us about this place and it was right across the street from us. We got the Sausage Gravy and Biscuits special and a couple of the Florentine Omelette. I really enjoyed this restaurant,the servers were all very nice and helpful,as I ate here from out of town. There is a good amount of variety here on the menu,and the patio area is beautiful! I tried out the Ruby Slipper Cafe for the first time on Friday, December 10 at about 12noon. I was in town on a business trip, and it was just me! I previously noticed this restaurant in New Orleans; however, the line was long and I didn't wait. The wait at this restaurant seemed much more manageable, plus I was alone so I grabbed a seat at the counter. The counter server was friendly and efficient. I had the sweet heat chicken with the french toast bites. This combination was excellent together, and I would highly recommend this dish. Overall, a good experience, and I likely will return again in the future. read more

Super cute little place for breakfast, although they do have lunch options as well. It's in an old bank building, and they kept the original floors with the bank name designed into the tile. Very charming feature! We both ordered "Morning Margaritas" which to me, tasted more like a screwdriver with cranberry and grapefruit juice. I wasn't really a fan of it. I ordered the Bananas Forster Pain Perdue (minus the raisins) and it was pure perfection. It came with applewood bacon and I cleaned the plate. Not a single bite left. My husband ordered the Three Little Pigs omelette and it came with the biggest biscuit I've ever seen in my life. Photo doesn't do it justice. I tasted his omelette and it was delicious. Service was wonderful. The place was freezing though. Definitely take a sweater if you're prone to getting cold. read more

Still in town for a conference and needed a quick lunch. Thankfully, Yelp let me know about Ruby Slipper Cafe. I sat at the bar and was waited on almost immediately. I ordered a coffee and the salmon Bennie. The coffee took a while, which I thought was curious, until I got it and realized they frothed it! Something different and not in a bad way! The Benedict was way more than I needed, so I suggest you come hungry. The eggs were perfectly poached, but the biscuit bed is really where the action was. Wow. Much of the spinach on the plate was rather wilted, so a little more attention to that detail would have made it a perfect experience. read more

Great, solid brunch spot. Originating in New Orleans, there are now dozens of locations across the South, including in Alabama and Florida. Famous for their benedicts and their unique New Orleans ingredients, such as crawfish and Gulf shrimp. Famous for their mix of flavorful pancakes, too. They have great Bloody Marys as well. Ruby Slipper Cafe inMobile is awesome. I visited this location for an Elite Yelp event and I had a wonderful time. We made biscuits from scratch. It was a merry good time with all the candied bacon, sunrise margaritas and biscuits galore. They staff was extra NICE! I loved the tour of the super clean kitchen and the history lesson behind the Ruby Slipper. A hidden gem we unlocked is that this location has phenomenal courtyard area. It was immaculate to the eye. I can't wait to visit again maybe during my lunch break to try some of their other menu items. read more

We love having brunch here! My wife enjoys their Mimosas and I indulge with the Bloody Mary's. Our server, T Aubree, was excellent! She was able to answer all of our questions and suggested items for us to try. I ordered the Gulf Shrimp Omelet which was absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the Migas, and she is a fan! The mix of Mexican flavors was right up her lane. The reason for the 4 , is both the men's and women's needed to be cleaned,/spot checked. Paper towels were falling out of the trash can and the women's bathroom likewise was over running with paper towels plus tissue strewn everywhere. A manager needs to be assigned to check this out, and have a person assigned to clean/wipe down every 45-60 minutes. This is an upscale venue, so I would expect more. I would ask them when you get there if you get an upset tummy about their beans and the acidity of it. Go check this place out.

Bad service, terrible food, long waits. I do not recommend this place at all. Regarding ambiance, it's fine. If they would take one table out, it would be much better. Everything is squashed together. They offer no water which is very odd, especially for a shop in a hotel.

Whether their coffee is good or not is completely subjective. I think it's good overall, but it might not be my first choice in town. But it's made with care, and as mentioned, roasted in house. Its popularity speaks to its quality. They also have a very good selection of pastries and other goodies to accompany your coffee, including a Mobile institution--cheesecake from a local company called Cotton Blues. The only gripe I have about Carpe Diem is their seating setup. There simply isn't enough of it. That said, I don't know how they could use the space more efficiently, since the cafe is small as it is. I prefer more private seating, which in other coffee houses I've been to has been accomplished with the judicious use of plants or high-backed chairs. The biggest component of the crowded seating is due to students from Springhill College across the street. Today, for instance, my husband and I were unable to find any seating at all. Even on the days when we can find seating, being entirely surrounded by people working quietly on their laptops feels awkward and lends a library-like feel to the atmosphere. It feels rude to have a conversation at a regular level. I feel like I'm intruding. I don't know how a coffee shop should handle this conundrum, as it's really not good business practice to limit customers' time while there, or to turn away clientele, even in an attempt to please all of their customers. There is already a back room which seems to be an unofficial space dedicated to students, but the overflow still takes up much of the cafe. That said, I enjoy Carpe Diem and going there is a nice little treat. I would definitely recommend it.

Ruby Rude and Racist After calling for two days to get information about reservations, we were told to fill out the waitlist prior to arriving. We still had to wait in the congested seating area for at least half an hour. We then were seated in a stuffy back room and had to arrange the tables, menus, and silverware ourselves. After paying our checks and waiting for our late arriving church goers to finish eating, the kitchen manager came to our table heavily suggesting we move to the outside patio if we wanted to continue "socializing." Stating, "we have a party waiting for the table." All 12 of us were completely appalled and in disbelief that we were being rushed while our party was still eating. The few (two senior citizens) that were still eating quickly boxed their food in embarrassment. My brother and I were personally outraged because they should have been able to finish their food without interference. I was also outraged that he could even suggest we take two children, an infant, and three seniors outside in 100 degree weather. The kitchen manager should have been addressing the restaurant's own incompetence and inability to follow their own scheduling and management. This was a 30 Birthday Brunch for my Brother, who loves the Eggs Benedict at the Rudy Slipper. My brother expressed, "things like this happens often here," before affirming his disinterest in returning again. This is completely unacceptable, especially when our party is paying 400+ dollars for a special celebration, an experience that comes one a lifetime that he will never get back! read more

Ok you have to start with the French toast bites!!! It's a mixture of French toast, beignets and doughnuts fried to perfection with way less sugar (in the best way). My husband had the bayou shrimp with scrambled egg whites instead of the poached eggs; I had the b.y.omelette, with shrimp, cheddar cheese, bell peppers and spinach accompanied with grits, and a biscuit. He drank water and orange juice, I and a morning margarita! My drink was sweet but also a little but how delicious my food was made up for if all. Everything came out in a timely fashion & hot! We found this gem while on vacation in Mobile. It was an amazing find! We started with the candied bacons bites. I had the shrimp omelette and my wife had the BBQ shrimp and grits. Both were phenomenal! The biscuits were great and came with a very delicious nutmeg/sugar cane/ honey butter. Our food came hot and quick, even though they were very busy. We sat at the bar and Andromeda took excellent care of us. Our drinks never went empty and she checked with us often, but not too much, to ensure we didn't need anything. When I say I'm super picky about my food so I was nervous about trying something new, however I was feeling adventurous! I went to the cafe and everything from the guest service to the tea to the food itself was amazing.! My server was Bria and she was amazing and very attentive. I got the biscuits and gravy and got so full and satisfied off just one.!
