I asked a man on the street for a good breakfast place and he was quick to recommend Bob's Diner. I arrived to a friendly welcome by Kevin and another young lady. The place had people cycling through while I ate and they seemed to turn chairs pretty fast. The place is bar stolls everywhere, no tables per se. My view was right into the kitchen area where they pumped out food pretty quick. The people here are very nice and accommodating. I ordered the Bob's breakfast 2 eggs, bacon, and grits. The place was packed but there was no wait. Casual vibe with bar seating and tables inside and out. The server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered Mrs. Ann's Breakfast and my husband ordered the Breakfast Burrito. The burrito was yummy rolled in a grilled spinach wrap with spinach and everything inside. My breakfast was also good - the swai or whatever type of fish they use was grilled and seasoned well. I really enjoyed every bite. We were helping our son move from Mobile. We needed food that we could pickup and that would be quick. We had several orders and were able to order online. It took 30 minutes for the food to be ready. The order was ready at the estimated time, and all orders were correct. I ordered the Bob's breakfast. It came with eggs, bacon, grits and a biscuit. The food was delicious, and was the perfect amount. The only problem was that they didn't include utensils or napkins with the order. Okay, let me start. It is a cute, small, dinner style. We ordered, pancakes, biscuit and gravy, and a fish and grits special. So, we sent everything but the pancakes back because it was cold. The biscuits and gravy came back warmer. The pancake was a 10 and the only reason I gave a 3. The special with grits wasn't warm enough to melt the cheese on it. While I understand Mardi Gras madness, we went fairly early. Not many people inside. We waited 15 minutes for someone to bring menus and drink orders. Then when we finally got checked on to order, it took another 30-40 minutes for food to come out. And it was cold. Flavor was okay but the food wasn't even hot enough to melt the butter. If you like slow service and cold food, this is it. 1 star for the amount of food options -- but could be a reason food comes out cold. read more

We live on the complete other side of town (and just beyond) and over the years we've been going downtown less and less. We when do, there's usually a particular reason which dictates where we eat, so even though Bob's has been on my bucket list for a long time, getting to go hasn't been so easy. FINALLY I was able to insist yesterday morning for a late breakfast. It's my kind of spot when I want divey, tucked away out of the main hub, neighborhood vibe where it feels like the staff knows everyone by name who comes in. It's sort of a dive-bar meets greasy-spoon. I had to try the country fried steak (which is really chicken fried steak to normal people) and scrambled eggs. I love that the eggs had "griddle flavor" (due to the seasoned age of the griddle and *hopefully* the use of bacon fat rather than a weird neutral oil; bacon fat rules). Everything was as good as a greasy-spoon should be. I'm not a fan of plain grits, but with cheese stirred in, I even liked these. My hub got corned beef with potatoes and a fried egg. He said he didn't care for the corned beef, but it may just be he has a limited notion of how corned beef can be prepared. We shared an a la carte pancakes, and these were straight up from a mix; the artificial flavors added to mixes are very prominent. I really do hope to go back again soon to work through some more of their menu items and utilize the bar; no doubt it's a great spot for a Bloody Mary or mimosa... or a breakfast beer since they close at 3. On all my reviews of breakfast places, one star gets automatically deducted for being served weird "butter spread", artificial creamer rather than real half n half, or the imitation corn-syrup types, and unfortunately such was the case at Bob's. (I do understand cost realities, but I also truly appreciate when even dives joints make the effort to reduce the amount of artificial items it offers.) And on this visit, I had to get up to go ask for a refill on my coffee. So the three stars reflect those two minuses; my food was perfect. read more

I'll start by saying that in years of going to Bob's, we have never had an issue with the food or the service. Today, we had both. it wasn't any more busy than usual, so that isn't a factor. We sat at the bar facing the window into the kitchen, so we could hear everything going on and being said in there. My Dr Pepper tasted very 'off' so my husband told the server. She said it probably needed to be changed but instead of offering to do so, asked if I wanted something else. I asked for coke instead, but she said it would just taste funny too (again instead of just changing it out...) so I kept my nasty drink because I don't drink tea and can't have alcohol at 7:40am when I have to be at work at 9am. We hear her yelling in the kitchen "turn down the grill, you're burning the bacon." Our food finally comes out at 8:29am (longest wait we have ever had there.) The bacon, both mine and my husband's) is charred to the point when you touch it, it just crumbles. No offer to have it remade or anything. She gave him jelly for his toast, but not his toast because "it was still cooking." Our scrambled eggs weren't cooked all the way, and still runny. Again, I have to be at work at 9am so we just ate them anyway, not the burnt sticks of bacon though. Couldn't pick them up without them falling apart. She brings the ticket and he said "you can have this unopened jelly back since I never got my toast anyway." Her response was to laugh and say "Jessica sucks. There's three of them back there though so I guess they all suck. Sorry." Our ticket was $41. No discount for gross drink, undercooked eggs, or severely overcooked bacon, and missing items from our order. Again - never had a problem in YEARS until today. Everyone can have a bad day, I get it. But it was the fact they all saw that food and served it anyway. No effort was done to even try to make it right. Very disappointing. Had I been new to this establishment, I'd assume it was the norm and never go back and that is concerning. read more

If you enjoy waiting an hour to eat with a server that rarely checks on you, this is the place! We stopped by for lunch around 12:45. Waited about 15 min for a table, then waited 45 more min for food. Server didn't even apologize for the ridiculous amount of time we waited for food to be prepared. Tried the shrimp and fried green tomatoes appetizer. It was mediocre at best. Ordered Shrimp tacos for meal. Server brought Catfish tacos instead. I have been a fairly regular customer of Bob's for several years now. Definitely the go to breakfast spot in Mobile. When you are at Bob's, you are with family. Today the owner (Tony, not Bob, go figure) suggested the Badass Omelette. I have never noticed it on the menu, but there it was today. An omelette with chunks of smoked meatloaf and Gouda cheese among other savory and spicy delights. This may be the best omelette ever. If you happen to be downtown looking for lunch on a budget, you can't beat the chicken livers over rice and gravy with two sides for $7.50. Best lunch deal in town by far! read more

Just off the main street, this little spot has tons of outdoor seating. Grab a seat and the servers will come around to take care of you. Friendly service that will help you through the menu (you're going to need a minute as they have tons of options). The fried pickles are a bit salty but I love them. They taste like they're fresh out of the jar, cut up in back and fried to order. Thick and crunchy batter with a zingy kick inside. Really enjoy the vegetable plate as you can select four of the sides on the menu. The fried okra and turnip greens were fantastic. All plates also come with a carb. Highly recommend the jalapeño hush puppy. I'd order a whole plate of those if I went again. Wasn't crazy about the grits. Even with the eggs and cheddar, they lacked flavor. First off, I was a major fan of this place. I am an out of town visitor that became a daily customer because I lived in walking distance. The food, service and atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. I felt as if it was a place that was a comforting food spot from home. In fact, the cooks and the owner, if he was there at the time, knew exactly what my order was going ro be and knew how I wanted it. I would have a lavish buffet,lol.... and it was just myself. Then I would take a "to-go" meal and did not have to worry about cooking. Unfortunately, this has all dissolved. Apparently, the cooks, who were seniors, are no longer there. Some of my faves on the menu are not there. For example, the berries French toast and instead of the incredible cornmeal white fish it's sway. The turnip greens are still on the menu but does not taste as good as they use to 5 years ago. In fact, they taste canned,smh. Even if they were canned before, the love, energy and the right seasonings that put in the food, I could not tell that it was or wasn't. The food had a quality taste that suited anyone's selective pallet. Now, I have been there 3 visits and it's been worse each time. My food, particularly, the fish was overcooked, the turnip greens were too salty on occasion and did not taste good at all, the cornbread was nasty hard and old and the mushrooms were awful and old, ugh . I even had mentioned my experience to the assistant manager, who has been there for years, at least since I've been there. I know things and cooks change, but I was anticipating a better outcome. I had even sent a friend of mine their and she was not happy or pleased with her order or customer service. Despite, this the owner Tony is a great guy! I know that he really does take pride in his business. I am uncertain if he is aware about the quality of food etc. Well, this is a disappointment for me today because I will not be returning. But I really hope the quality of the food and customer service improves. Lastly, I am a gracious tipper, even when I am only getting a take out order. So I expect great service. But still, it's just been worse. To the point that I received overcooked extremely hot fish that melted the Styrofoam because the cook did not put a paper sheet to prevent the styrofoam to melt,smh, so the fish tasted and smelled like burnt plastic! The presentation was awful and unhealthy. That could have been avoided. But I felt as if the cook didn't give a care,smh. Because, who does that?! Well, this is just a review and again hopefully things will get better as far as food quality and service or it can only get worse. read more

Eggs were vulcanized rubber, crispy, I couldn't even cut them with a fork. Only thing soft was the yolk. The hash was a wet slop. Yes, I said wet slop, as in almost soupy. Totally put me off. Sent it back and left, no second chance... And I'm not stupid enough to risk an irate cook's revenge. Service was slow at best, and I heard this complaint from multiple diners as they waited.
