A local recommended this eclectic restaurant for breakfast, and it did not disappoint. My son and I were seated immediately upon entry at the bar-style high-top seating. We both enjoyed our breakfast tacos and country-fried steak. It's a little loud, especially with a guy sitting near you who would rather hear his own voice than eat or drink. Patio seating. Excellent service. They have a credit card fee AND a service fee.
Neighborhood gem near the courthouse downtown. An small restaurant with an eclectic interior, dollars hanging from the ceiling, a full bar and more. I asked a man on the street for a good breakfast place and he was quick to recommend Bob's Diner. I arrived to a friendly welcome by Kevin and another young lady. The place had people cycling through while I ate and they seemed to turn chairs pretty fast. The place is bar stolls everywhere, no tables per se. My view was right into the kitchen area where they pumped out food pretty quick. The people here are very nice and accommodating. I ordered the Bob's breakfast 2 eggs, bacon, and grits. I also ordered a biscuit. The food was tasty. I would return if downtown for breakfast.
Well, this place rocks with ambiance, personality, outdoor seating and great menu. The coffee is fresh and staff nice. Can't ask for anything more. Well, the food.... Awesome! Fresh, hot and very good. Remember to support your local grubberies so we both don't starve...
The place was packed but there was no wait. Casual vibe with bar seating and tables inside and out. The server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered Mrs. Ann's Breakfast and my husband ordered the Breakfast Burrito. The burrito was yummy rolled in a grilled spinach wrap with spinach and everything inside. My breakfast was also good - the swai or whatever type of fish they use was grilled and seasoned well. I really enjoyed every bite. It started pouring rain just as we were leaving and many of the patrons sat under the awning on the bench to eat their food.
We were helping our son move from Mobile. We needed food that we could pickup and that would be quick. We had several orders and were able to order online. It took 30 minutes for the food to be ready. The order was ready at the estimated time, and all orders were correct. I ordered the Bob's breakfast. It came with eggs, bacon, grits and a biscuit. The food was delicious, and was the perfect amount. The only problem was that they didn't include utensils or napkins with the order. Because we were moving and everything was boxed up, this was pretty inconvenient. Overall the food was good, and I would visit again.
Okay, let me start. It is a cute, small, dinner style. We ordered, pancakes, biscuit and gravy, and a fish and grits special. So, we sent everything but the pancakes back because it was cold. The biscuits and gravy came back warmer. The pancake was a 10 and the only reason I gave a 3. The special with grits wasn't warm enough to melt the cheese on it. It was lukewarm at best after being send back. The redeeming factor--the server was adorable. She was just precious and kept it running. They also had a jazz band when we walked up-that is a big plus.
They say it's at the "corner of Fat and Happy," and they are precisely correct. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal.
We live on the complete other side of town (and just beyond) and over the years we've been going downtown less and less. We when do, there's usually a particular reason which dictates where we eat, so even though Bob's has been on my bucket list for a long time, getting to go hasn't been so easy. FINALLY I was able to insist yesterday morning for a late breakfast. It's my kind of spot when I want divey, tucked away out of the main hub, neighborhood vibe where it feels like the staff knows everyone by name who comes in. It's sort of a dive-bar meets greasy-spoon. I had to try the country fried steak (which is really chicken fried steak to normal people) and scrambled eggs. I love that the eggs had "griddle flavor" (due to the seasoned age of the griddle and *hopefully* the use of bacon fat rather than a weird neutral oil; bacon fat rules). Everything was as good as a greasy-spoon should be. I'm not a fan of plain grits, but with cheese stirred in, I even liked these. My hub got corned beef with potatoes and a fried egg. He said he didn't care for the corned beef, but it may just be he has a limited notion of how corned beef can be prepared. We shared an a la carte pancakes, and these were straight up from a mix; the artificial flavors added to mixes are very prominent. I really do hope to go back again soon to work through some more of their menu items and utilize the bar; no doubt it's a great spot for a Bloody Mary or mimosa... or a breakfast beer since they close at 3. On all my reviews of breakfast places, one star gets automatically deducted for being served weird "butter spread", artificial creamer rather than real half n half, or the imitation corn-syrup types, and unfortunately such was the case at Bob's. (I do understand cost realities, but I also truly appreciate when even dives joints make the effort to reduce the amount of artificial items it offers.) And on this visit, I had to get up to go ask for a refill on my coffee. So the three stars reflect those two minuses; my food was perfect.
I'll start by saying that in years of going to Bob's, we have never had an issue with the food or the service. Today, we had both. it wasn't any more busy than usual, so that isn't a factor. We sat at the bar facing the window into the kitchen, so we could hear everything going on and being said in there. My Dr Pepper tasted very 'off' so my husband told the server. She said it probably needed to be changed but instead of offering to do so, asked if I wanted something else. I asked for coke instead, but she said it would just taste funny too (again instead of just changing it out...) so I kept my nasty drink because I don't drink tea and can't have alcohol at 7:40am when I have to be at work at 9am. We hear her yelling in the kitchen "turn down the grill, you're burning the bacon." Our food finally comes out at 8:29am (longest wait we have ever had there.) The bacon, both mine and my husband's) is charred to the point when you touch it, it just crumbles. No offer to have it remade or anything. She gave him jelly for his toast, but not his toast because "it was still cooking." Our scrambled eggs weren't cooked all the way, and still runny. Again, I have to be at work at 9am so we just ate them anyway, not the burnt sticks of bacon though. Couldn't pick them up without them falling apart. She brings the ticket and he said "you can have this unopened jelly back since I never got my toast anyway." Her response was to laugh and say "Jessica sucks. There's three of them back there though so I guess they all suck. Sorry." Our ticket was $41. No discount for gross drink, undercooked eggs, or severely overcooked bacon, and missing items from our order. Again - never had a problem in YEARS until today. Everyone can have a bad day, I get it. But it was the fact they all saw that food and served it anyway. No effort was done to even try to make it right. Very disappointing. Had I been new to this establishment, I'd assume it was the norm and never go back and that is concerning.

Everything was tasty. Small place but pretty good view out the window and all the unique downtown passersby's on lunch hour. Fast and friendly service. read more

I love this place. Small building, big flavors. They make pancakes my favorite way, light and fluffy on the inside with a slightly crisp caramelized edge, and the alligator sausage is fantastic! Super friendly staff. read more

I have nothing but GOOD to say. My husband and I had been walking a long while and were famished. It was Thursday mid morning so I knew there would be no live music, but I must say, the food was very good. Worth the wait. We each had the "standard" breakfast, but next time we go, we're going to try something different. It is a small place with a lot of the kind of stuff the new-fangled restaurants are lacking. Friendly folks working there and eclectic décor, just the way my husband and I like it. The parking during the week/day is easy to find ( we found out the hard way) but I'm certain it's a different story come the weekend. Come in and give it a try. Waffle House doesn't hold a candle. read more

My son (who doesn't like anything) said these were the best pancakes EVER. My wife had French toast, which was outstanding too. I had the small two egg breakfast. All of our food was really good, served hot and fresh read more
Visiting friends, they told me this was the best spot for breakfast/brunch on weekends, so off we went. Parking was a breeze, and after breakfast we walked to the water (had to walk off the grit calories ha!). What a choice for brunch! I've visited twice now, and was pleased with both visits. The staff is friendly, the outdoor seating is awesome, and there was live music for a wonderful morning atmosphere. I had a poinsettia both times, because that's the best way to start brunch. First visit I had a seafood and veggie omelet, which was delicious. Definitely something I'd order every visit if I lived in the area. Stuffed with seafood and veg, the egg was cooked well, and the sauce is a great addition. Second visit I had the fried fish and grits, which were also delicious. The grits could use a bit more seasoning, but then again I'm from LA so I'll give them a pass because the texture was great. The fried fish portion was huge and the corn bread breading was perfect. I can't say anything about the inside of the restaurant because we stayed outside, but if you are sitting outside, enjoy the murals. Walk around the back of the building and there's a great angel wing mural. read more

Date of our visit was 03/29. My wife had the hamburger steak over yellow rice with sauteed onions and brown gravy. Her sides were cucumber salad and turnip greens. I had the St. Francis Street breakfast, eggs over medium. It comes with conecuh sausage, bacon, home fried potatoes, grits and a biscuit. While almost everything was good, the only thing that was above average was the sausage. We liked it so much we are going to have some shipped to our home. The hamburger steak, onions, rice and gravy were good. The sides not so much. My eggs arrived over hard so they had to be remade. Next ones came over easy, which was acceptable. I didn't like the home fried potatoes or grits. Bacon was nice and crispy, just as I like it, and the sausage was great. Biscuit was okay. Coffee is good. Bob's is a small place with seven outdoor tables and counter seating inside. Street parking is free if you can get it. Paid parking across the street. Service was very good. Friendly folks work here. We're sure there are some excellent items on their menu so we recommend giving Bob's a try. read more

My go-to breakfast spot. NEVER disappoints! Great food, service and love sitting outside when the weather is nice read more
My daughter and I went to Bob's for breakfast before she left for enrollment in college. It was great. The servers were friendly and and attentive, but not too much. The food was excellent. I had the Colonel Anderson, four french toast, scrambled eggs and bacon. Eggs and bacon were perfectly cooked, and the french toast were probably the best I have ever had. My daughter had the berry fruity french, which was also excellent. We dined outside where we were entertained by a delightful trio of musicians. I hope my video of them will upload for all to see. All in all, I have to agree that there is no place better for breakfast then "on the corner of Fat and Happy," as they say at Bob's. Check it out. I don't know if it will cause any fat, but a trip to Bob's Downtown Restaurant will certainly leave you happy. read more
So this would fall into the "Dive - Ish" category and just the kind of place I always want to try Located on St. Francis Bob's is just a really cool place that should attract any foodie that happens by. They are open for breakfast and lunch and older standard breakfast and lunch items. I ordered the Downtown, which was two eggs, bacon, Conecuh sausage, grits and s biscuit. I asked for the eggs over medium and the bacon to be crispy. Over medium is very subjective and they nailed it for me! Bacon was crispy and most importantly, the grits were seasoned. That is a big barometer of a breakfast place for me. If they know how to proper season grits and are not afraid to do so, that is always a win in my mind. They do have some pretty interesting appetizers on the menu like Cornmeal fried shrimp and green tomatoes, jalapeño fried hush puppies, crab cakes, and their seafood gumbo is reportedly great. On the lunch menu they have sandwiches, burgers, seafood, hot dogs, salads and a kids menu. Other breakfast items include: Country fried steak and eggs for only $10 Corned beef hash with home fried potatoes and eggs for $10 Omelets Crab cakes and eggs Fried fish and smoked Gouda grits - I wish I had seen this one first!! My breakfast was great and I will definitely be back. read more

Don't sleep on this little brunch dive. It's always packed because the food is incredible!!! I love their hot Hill and Brooks coffee too. Every choice I have made here has been the right one. Mobile, Alabama - "Bob's" is everything I look for in an breakfast/lunch eatery ... a great service team, creative tasty-riffic menu items, NOT "big-business", quality food, fair pricing, & counter-seating. ... PLUS a full bar! Street parking is available - some FREE, if you are lucky like myself. Thanks for the smiles "Alicia" "Run-A-Way Bill" was here! ... and will return whenever in Mobile! 01.13.21 read more

Awesome breakfast - even better New Orleans vibes. The seating was very disappointing though - the inside was arranged where you can only sit at bar like seating looking outside. The outside was packed and the benches we sat at had no umbrella shade so the sun scorched us while we ate. The food was really great - definitely worth the pain of sitting in the hot sun. I enjoyed cornmeal crusted fish and grits with Gouda cheese it was just as good as I'd imagined. My husband and oldest daughter ordered corn beef hash and potatoes - he nearly licked the bowl. My youngest daughter had kids shrimp and fries - I stole a few they were so good. When we arrived a band was playing and my daughter couldn't help but dance. read more
Nice little spot for breakfast just downtown. The food was just okay and nothing super special. I was excited for the Brie in Joey's omelette and wish there was more in there to taste! Good biscuit, could have taken it left the grits (maybe just me and my thoughts on grits in general). Corned beef hash was good but a bit runny. Overall good flavors and good breakfast, but nothing spectacular. read more

A friend and I met for lunch at Bob's. It was a first time visit for both of us. Street parking is available but limited, however, there is a parking lot for $ that is conveniently located on Jackson St. across from the restaurant. We enjoyed the outside seating on this beautiful day. There are lots of items on the menu but we both opted for the daily specials. I had the chicken salad with fried okra, slaw and garlic toast. My friend had the buffalo chicken spinach wrap with green beans and a hush puppy. Drinks are added at a reduced amount when ordering from the daily specials part of the menu. Our food was delicious as well as the customer service. Afterwards we enjoyed shopping at a few of the shops on Dauphin St. read more

Just got to town. Tried to hit The Ruby Slipper for brunch but they had no internet and wanted cash only. Their lose our gain. We ended up walking about six minutes and had a delightfully tasty breakfast at Bobs. My partner found it online, breakfast served all day, four of my favorite words. We were lucky it was a beautiful day and we ended up eating outside. Love these beautiful days in Mobile, sunny, not to hot, cool enough there are no bugs, no wind, truly perfect outdoor conditions for dining. Excellent service, attentive and seems to appreciate you came there way. I got the French toast and was blown away by the portion size. To me four slices is two slices cut in half. Nope it was four slices of thick Texas Toast bread. I also tried the gator sausage, do NOT skip this, it's amazing! I don't know if it's the gator or the spices but yes to both. My partner got the breakfast sandwich it was huge. I included some humorous pics so you get the laid back enjoy life feel of the place. Hope this all helps. read more

Oh my goodness, stopped by today for lunch and now trying to figure out when I can go back before I fly home. After I looked a long time trying to decide what to get.... I flipped the menu over and another full page to confuse me even more. I wanted to try at least 10 of the items. I finally decided on one of their $10.50 daily lunch specials.... broiled fish on rice topped with crawfish etoufee, 2 sides and cornbread, not to mention a delicious cup on gumbo for a starter. A small "joint" but what excellent and reasonably priced food. My lunchmate had fried fish on top of cheese and spinach grits. Both plates were winners. Countertop seating inside and tables outside. Give it a try. read more

We got breakfast because the reviews said it was "so good" and honestly it was mediocre at best. Nothing had a "wow" factor to it. Also got Bloody Mary's and they are alright. But if you get Tito's with your Bloody Mary the price jumps from $5.24 (well) to an $11 Bloody with celery, an olive, and a pepper. Overall it's cute place with nice staff but not worth the money for a great breakfast or brunch honestly. read more

Quick stop in town and found this gem. Situated in the heart of mobile on a quiet corner. Bar style seating only but still comfortable and I picked a window seat to enjoy the world go by. Wait service was quick, easy and very nice. And food served fairly quickly. My one dish was very good with great flavor, opted for potatoes since I wasn't feeling grits and the a local made sausage which I can not remember the name of but was good with a mild flavor and good snap. read more

TLDR: First experience was so nice we did a "vacation cardinal sin" and ate there twice! So I originally picked this place because we we're staying right down the road from them and wanted to get an early start to the beach. Bob's was open, the menu seemed good, the reviews were also good! So we went, obviously. Service was good, the hostess who sat us was very kind. Our waitress was nice and accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu. We got to sit outside on the corner of North Jackson St and St Francis St, we sat at a picnic table that had an umbrella. It wasn't super busy yet, but steadily picked up. Our service did not suffer with the increase in customers. Everyone--including regulars of the restaurant--were friendly and would chat with you. I enjoyed this, Southern Hospitality at its finest! I ordered Tom's Biscuits and Sausage Gravy--the gravy was so flavorful and cooked just right! There are bits of cut up sausage in the gravy, not traditional breakfast sausage (at least not traditional to me). I could only eat half! It was so filling. My boyfriend ate Bob's Breakfast (2 eggs scrambled, 2 strips of bacon, grits, and a biscuit). He ate it all, except for the grits (which I nibbled on and enjoyed!) This was a great place for breakfast that we went back the following morning! Same experience, although a little later in the morning, around 10:00 am, so we had a little wait for a table, nothing bad. There was live music playing that morning and it was really nice! This time we sat outside again, but on the other side of the building. Same service. Same quality of food. This time around I ordered the BLT--the fries were amazing! My boyfriend got Julie's Breakfast (2 eggs, scrambled, 2 pancakes, and 2 strips of bacon). Both days he ordered a coffee and had no complaints. I ordered waters and an unsweetened iced tea. All in all, would go back and we did, lol. But if we're ever in Mobile again, we will be stopping by! read more
