Bob's Downtown Restaurant is a cool quirky fun spot with fun vibe. I'm generally not a big fan of breakfast food but on a recent visit to Mobile, AL I had to get up early to drive on a long road trip so breakfast it was. The seafood omelet looked like a good option but on arrival it seemed to be lacking in the seafood department and I was expecting some ooey gooey cheese to glue it all together but that didn't happen. It ended up being a decent omelet however the grits and biscuit really let me down and I just couldn't finish them. The grits just had no flavor and I'm used to veal grillades and grits or shirmp and grits or at least cheese grits but these grits were just zero flavor grits. I would have liked to add some butter to my grits and to my biscuit but sadly they only had fake butter spread and not real butter here which always depresses my appetite. The biscuit was far too hard, dry and crumbly to be enjoyable and certainly was not the type of biscuit that is to my taste. So the lunch menu did look quite nice to me so I still certainly want to return to sample their regular food but the breakfast food was generally disappointing to me and again I'm just not a big fan of most breakfast food anyway but I do respect a great biscuit and some proper grits which to my taste wasn't what I found here although other folks might love the grits and biscuits here. If you're a big breakfast food fan you might like the breakfast food here a LOT more than I did so try it for yourself while I wait to sample the lunch food. I have nothing but GOOD to say. My husband and I had been walking a long while and were famished. It was Thursday mid morning so I knew there would be no live music, but I must say, the food was very good. Worth the wait. We each had the "standard" breakfast, but next time we go, we're going to try something different. It is a small place with a lot of the kind of stuff the new-fangled restaurants are lacking. Friendly folks working there and eclectic décor, just the way my husband and I like it. The parking during the week/day is easy to find ( we found out the hard way) but I'm certain it's a different story come the weekend. Come in and give it a try. Visiting friends, they told me this was the best spot for breakfast/brunch on weekends, so off we went. Parking was a breeze, and after breakfast we walked to the water (had to walk off the grit calories ha!). What a choice for brunch! I've visited twice now, and was pleased with both visits. The staff is friendly, the outdoor seating is awesome, and there was live music for a wonderful morning atmosphere. I had a poinsettia both times, because that's the best way to start brunch. First visit I had a seafood and veggie omelet, which was delicious. Definitely something I'd order every visit if I lived in the area. Stuffed with seafood and veg, the egg was cooked well, and the sauce is a great addition. Second visit I had the fried fish and grits, which were also delicious. The grits could use a bit more seasoning, but then again I'm from LA so I'll give them a pass because the texture was great. The fried fish portion was huge and the corn bread breading was perfect. I can't say anything about the inside of the restaurant because we stayed outside, but if you are sitting outside, enjoy the murals. Walk around the back of the building and there's a great angel wing mural. read more

Went for breakfast on Sunday before taking a little drive to go an gamble. This place was so cool and with such a locals vibe. Had their biscuits and gravy with grits and eggs. Everything tasted home made my favorite was the grits. Only reason I didn't give them 5 starts was because I didn't get a spoon for my grits (How dare you!!) and the coffee was average at best. We love a good divey dinner! At Bob's, there are no inside tables. Only bar seating and counters along the outer walls. Plenty of outer seating, weather permitting Service was really good on a busy Saturday morning. Lots of unique offerings along with many traditional items. Date of our visit was 03/29. My wife had the hamburger steak over yellow rice with sauteed onions and brown gravy. Her sides were cucumber salad and turnip greens. I had the St. Francis Street breakfast, eggs over medium. It comes with conecuh sausage, bacon, home fried potatoes, grits and a biscuit. While almost everything was good, the only thing that was above average was the sausage. We liked it so much we are going to have some shipped to our home. The hamburger steak, onions, rice and gravy were good. The sides not so much. My eggs arrived over hard so they had to be remade. Next ones came over easy, which was acceptable. I didn't like the home fried potatoes or grits. Bacon was nice and crispy, just as I like it, and the sausage was great. Biscuit was okay. Coffee is good. Bob's is a small place with seven outdoor tables and counter seating inside. Street parking is free if you can get it. Paid parking across the street. Service was very good. Friendly folks work here. We're sure there are some excellent items on their menu so we recommend giving Bob's a try. read more

We were visiting from Florida and Ross at Bay City Tours recommended Bob's Downtown Restaurant. So happy we followed his recommendation. I truly had the luck of the Irish when Bob let me sample his corned beef and cabbage! The generous slice of corned beef had the perfect grill on it and the mixed cabbage (green and purple) was tender NOT mushy. The small new potatoes and baby carrots were cooked to perfection as well! I highly recommend treating yourself for the upcoming St. Patty's Day. My husband had the chopped steak and rice with green beans and salad. He said it was the best he has had! Just got to town. Tried to hit The Ruby Slipper for brunch but they had no internet and wanted cash only. Their lose our gain. We ended up walking about six minutes and had a delightfully tasty breakfast at Bobs. My partner found it online, breakfast served all day, four of my favorite words. We were lucky it was a beautiful day and we ended up eating outside. Love these beautiful days in Mobile, sunny, not to hot, cool enough there are no bugs, no wind, truly perfect outdoor conditions for dining. Excellent service, attentive and seems to appreciate you came there way. I got the French toast and was blown away by the portion size. To me four slices is two slices cut in half. Nope it was four slices of thick Texas Toast bread. I also tried the gator sausage, do NOT skip this, it's amazing! I don't know if it's the gator or the spices but yes to both. So this would fall into the "Dive - Ish" category and just the kind of place I always want to try Located on St. Francis Bob's is just a really cool place that should attract any foodie that happens by. They are open for breakfast and lunch and older standard breakfast and lunch items. I ordered the Downtown, which was two eggs, bacon, Conecuh sausage, grits and s biscuit. I asked for the eggs over medium and the bacon to be crispy. Over medium is very subjective and they nailed it for me! Bacon was crispy and most importantly, the grits were seasoned. That is a big barometer of a breakfast place for me. If they know how to proper season grits and are not afraid to do so, that is always a win in my mind. They do have some pretty interesting appetizers on the menu like Cornmeal fried shrimp and green tomatoes, jalapeño fried hush puppies, crab cakes, and their seafood gumbo is reportedly great. On the lunch menu they have sandwiches, burgers, seafood, hot dogs, salads and a kids menu. Other breakfast items include: Country fried steak and eggs for only $10 Corned beef hash with home fried potatoes and eggs for $10 Omelets Crab cakes and eggs Fried fish and smoked Gouda grits - I wish I had seen this one first!! My daughter and I went to Bob's for breakfast before she left for enrollment in college. It was great. The servers were friendly and and attentive, but not too much. The food was excellent. I had the Colonel Anderson, four french toast, scrambled eggs and bacon. Eggs and bacon were perfectly cooked, and the french toast were probably the best I have ever had. My daughter had the berry fruity french, which was also excellent. We dined outside where we were entertained by a delightful trio of musicians. I hope my video of them will upload for all to see. All in all, I have to agree that there is no place better for breakfast then "on the corner of Fat and Happy," as they say at Bob's. Check it out. Awesome breakfast - even better New Orleans vibes. The seating was very disappointing though - the inside was arranged where you can only sit at bar like seating looking outside. The outside was packed and the benches we sat at had no umbrella shade so the sun scorched us while we ate. The food was really great - definitely worth the pain of sitting in the hot sun. I enjoyed cornmeal crusted fish and grits with Gouda cheese it was just as good as I'd imagined. My husband and oldest daughter ordered corn beef hash and potatoes - he nearly licked the bowl. A friend and I met for lunch at Bob's. It was a first time visit for both of us. Street parking is available but limited, however, there is a parking lot for $ that is conveniently located on Jackson St. across from the restaurant. We enjoyed the outside seating on this beautiful day. There are lots of items on the menu but we both opted for the daily specials. I had the chicken salad with fried okra, slaw and garlic toast. My friend had the buffalo chicken spinach wrap with green beans and a hush puppy. Drinks are added at a reduced amount when ordering from the daily specials part of the menu. I flipped the menu over and another full page to confuse me even more. I wanted to try at least 10 of the items. I finally decided on one of their $10.50 daily lunch specials.... broiled fish on rice topped with crawfish etoufee, 2 sides and cornbread, not to mention a delicious cup on gumbo for a starter. A small "joint" but what excellent and reasonably priced food. My lunchmate had fried fish on top of cheese and spinach grits. Both plates were winners. Countertop seating inside and tables outside. But if you get Tito's with your Bloody Mary the price jumps from $5.24 (well) to an $11 Bloody with celery, an olive, and a pepper. Quick stop in town and found this gem. Situated in the heart of mobile on a quiet corner. Bar style seating only but still comfortable and I picked a window seat to enjoy the world go by. Wait service was quick, easy and very nice. And food served fairly quickly. TLDR: First experience was so nice we did a "vacation cardinal sin" and ate there twice! So I originally picked this place because we we're staying right down the road from them and wanted to get an early start to the beach. Bob's was open, the menu seemed good, the reviews were also good! So we went, obviously. Service was good, the hostess who sat us was very kind. Our waitress was nice and accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu. We got to sit outside on the corner of North Jackson St and St Francis St, we sat at a picnic table that had an umbrella. It wasn't super busy yet, but steadily picked up. Our service did not suffer with the increase in customers. Everyone--including regulars of the restaurant--were friendly and would chat with you. I enjoyed this, Southern Hospitality at its finest! I ordered Tom's Biscuits and Sausage Gravy--the gravy was so flavorful and cooked just right! There are bits of cut up sausage in the gravy, not traditional breakfast sausage (at least not traditional to me). I could only eat half! It was so filling. My boyfriend ate Bob's Breakfast (2 eggs scrambled, 2 strips of bacon, grits, and a biscuit). He ate it all, except for the grits (which I nibbled on and enjoyed!) This was a great place for breakfast that we went back the following morning! Same experience, although a little later in the morning, around 10:00 am, so we had a little wait for a table, nothing bad. There was live music playing that morning and it was really nice! This time we sat outside again, but on the other side of the building. Same service. Same quality of food. This time around I ordered the BLT--the fries were amazing! My boyfriend got Julie's Breakfast (2 eggs, scrambled, 2 pancakes, and 2 strips of bacon). Both days he ordered a coffee and had no complaints. I ordered waters and an unsweetened iced tea. This place is probably violating all health codes. The most gross, grittiest food establishment I've been to my whole life. I'm not sure how people eat here and I hope k didn't get food poisoned but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if I did. All the counters and the entire floor is STICKY due to not not being cleaned in ages, flies all over the place, nasty nasty smell of cockroaches as soon as you sit down. I ate here only because I was driving from Miami and needed to eat. But omg. What a gross place. The food was awesome! We had the fried fish with grits and collard greens and the shrimp tacos with squash, fried okra, and a biscuit. EVERYTHING was delicious! We are going to be in Mobile for a few days and I just want to eat here for every meal! There are so many other dishes I want to try. My husband said it was the best fried fish he ever had! He usually likes to dip his fish in tartar sauce, but said he didn't need to because the flavor was so great!
