This is one of the best places I have been across several states. The fried chicken was juicy and the crust was crunchy. The red beans and rice were amazing , and the corn bread was delicious. I thought that the mac was going to be out of this world, but I forgot that some places like peppery (lots of black pepper) mac. This is one of such locations. My sister, mother and I had dinner at Mary's this afternoon and were so full of comfort food when we left! We all 3 ordered veggie plates to share family-style. Their portions are enough for at least 3 people. The choices were many and hard to make, but we had perfectly seasoned green lima beans and field peas with snaps, succotash with tomatoes and corn and okra, creamy red beans, and all 3 of us got the mac and cheese. Because who wants to share their mac and cheese? Not this girl! It is so exceptional. Everything was really yummy, but the mac and cheese was the best! The people who work there are all sooo pleasant and friendly. We ate in their dining room, and it was spotless and clean. I kinda wanna keep this a secret (although I've heard they get really busy sometimes), but y'all should really give Mary's a try if you like REAL southern comfort food. read more

I didn't have a great feeling about this place. But, my wife wanted to try it, so... First off, it's NOT AYCE. Even though it's pricier than similar restaurants that ARE AYCE. Secondly, you get your food in a box with plastic utensils. No real plates. No real silverware. We paid a little over $50 for two people for lunch with no dessert and one drink. That's pricey for lunch. I must admit, the food was good. My wife said the fried chicken was excellent and my pork chop was as good as any I have had. The sides were all better than average. So, the food kept it from being a total bust. I did saw a hole through my pork chop, with my PLASTIC KNIFE, that also went all the way through my styrofoam box - so that was a big mess on their table. (That could have been avoided with a real plate.) Summary: very good food. Overpriced. Served in a box. Staff was polite and accommodating. For $50 a couple can have lunch at much nicer places. But - I have nothing bad to say about the food. You decide if this is for you. It's not for us. read more

Well, since I am traveling, and on my way to meet, Family decided I have a little food with my brother and his wife. So we looked up what was in the area and we chose this really really quaint barbecue spot out of the way is sincerely Alabama. The food is so good. Everything I had was delicious now if you don't like pork, you're gonna have to order something off the menu, but on the buffet, they have a few selections of pork dishes that looked really appetizing and my brother and his wife said that it was really really good. The sweet tea was perfect as it should be since we were in the South and our servers were attentive and so friendly we were greeted with a smile and told us that we could sit anywhere and it has been such a pleasure. It wasn't far from the hotel we were staying for the night. Once we arrived we were met with a long line that was stalled a bit. We went with the fried pork chop (1), fried chicken (he wasn't too crazy about the seasoning), dressing w/ & w/o gravy, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, lima beans and yams. It's still good at the new location! We tried the fried chicken, special chicken and the pork chops. Fried chicken honestly wasn't fantastic. The fried pork chops were easily the best entree we picked with a light, crisp coating seasoned perfectly. Mary's special chicken is delicious but I wanted more sauce. Sides were all decent. I prefer my lima beans with chunks of ham, but hers were nice. Mac and cheese could have been a bit creamier and broccoli rice casserole was pretty good. Yams were outstanding, we all loved those. Cornbread didn't even need extra butter, it was that good. An entree and three sides plus cornbread ranges from $15-$18ish depending on what you order. It's enough food for two people to share, or one person to bring home leftovers. Portions are really generous. The line was backed up when we got there and doubled back toward the front door. It took a good 40 minutes for us to just get through the line. Luckily, we had nice people to chat with while we waited. The main reason for the backup seems to be that they had one man serving entrees and one man serving sides. This would have been fine, but it looked like they were filling more to go orders than in person orders, so everyone in line was waiting while the to go orders were filled first. And we were heading to NOLA and saw this was on the way again so had to stop. Mary Mary Mary! The food here is sooooo good. Full of flavor and you can tell it was made with love. I recommend if you're flying into Mobile and driving to downtown! The food reminded me of a home-cooked meal. The people were also very kind, even adding to customer's portions without calling attention to it. The kool-aid was a throwback treat and it was easy to pick up this meal after a long day of travel. Baked chicken: Fell off the bone! Salty, soft, delicious. Collards: Great! Look out for bones lol. Corn bread: So homey, I loved that you could taste the butter that lined the cupcake sheet. 12/16/2025. BBQ chicken was just baked meat with uncooked sauce slathered all over it. VERY messy to eat! Meat flavor was only so-so. 3 sides: green beans were not bad just overcooked with the soggy drab look as was the cabbage. Neither very flavorful. Succotash was a sorta soupy mix of corn, english peas, green beans with a few scattered very small bits of carrots in a weak tomato soup base. The overall taste was poor with that "old refrigerator" flavor foods have when previously stored there. I ate almost half of it but couldn't handle the rest. The yellow corn muffin looked good, well cooked but it was hard, very crumbly and very dry inside. It was probably pretty good when it was fresh cooked yesterday morning. Given the meal cost over $16 before tip with no drink, will not stop at Mary's again. I respectfully did not complain to the staff but someone needs to know this stuff!!! read more

I visited with my parents and family from out of town. It was also my first time going but the food was phenomenal. The staff was very courteous and quick. Everyone had a great attitude. We had to wait for more pork chops but it didn't take long and they kept us updated on the progress. The only thing that would make this place better is inside seating. Felt like we knew her as soon as we walked in the door. Charles, got our food together & he was a charming gentleman, y'all. We also had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Mary herself. She was greeting every table & speaking to everyone. Lovely lady with a beautiful smile. The food.......oh my GOODNESS! Mom had the baked pork chops, collard greens, succotash, & speckled lima beans. I had the baked chicken, candied yams, mac & cheese, collard greens & we both got a cornbread muffin. (I think I may have had a dream about those candies yams.) I live in California and I saw this place on TikTok, been dreaming of coming ever since. When I finally get there the options are slim. No fish, no shrimp, no ribs, no cabbage, about five sides and only one option for cake. I got the turkey necks, and they were delicious! NGL. I also got greens (very bland), Lima beans (also bland but I still liked them), red beans (not a fan), green beans (were ok, had an unusual flavor but not bad), candied yams (very good). This was a gem while in undergrad at South and it continues to hold the crown for best soul food. I'm from Birmingham and there is nothing like Mary's around. The staff is always super pleasant and friendly. The restaurant is clean and the portion sizes are great. We typically get it our food to go and enjoy at home. The star of the show will forever and always be the lovely candied yams. Boy do I miss this place Sunday after church. I am thankful that I was able to reunite with Mary's during Mardi Gras. My parents finally tried and loved their dishes. I'm not big on ordering spaghetti at restaurants but Mary's did a great job. This will always be a place I visit when in town! SO FREAKING GOOD!!! Walked in and let them know it was my first time. Warmly greeted, had the process explained and then the fun began! Picked the fried chicken and it was juicy, well seasoned, and incredible. My 3 sides were Mary's collards, Mac and Cheese, and dirty rice. All three sides were amazing!!! But those collard greens!!
