Wowza! It only took me 7 years for an in-person visit, but I made it! And at long last, and as I'd hoped, the dine-in experience is a night and day difference from the catering I tasted all those years ago. A friend recommended a lunch stop at Mama's after a downtown meeting, and I was thrilled to finally give it a real go. (I'd honestly forgotten about my first impression until I remembered) But that's in the past and I'm happy to wipe the slate clean. This visit, the fried chicken special was delicious and perfectly executed. I tasted the pork chop and it was great as well. The Mac and cheese and collard greens that I ordered as sides, all tasty. I cleaned my plate. The sweet tea is also just as amazing as I remember from before when I tasted it in the wild. Service from Emily, wonderful as well. Great spot where the locals meet! Not too big, found easy seating though. We came for Fried chicken but today was not the day for it. So he had the baked chicken, moist and meaty with two sides. My chicken salad was fresh and delicious! Great spot and we need to check the specials before we return!! read more

Loved Mama's! The chicken fingers weren't my favorite I've ever had, but I loved the meat & three concept of the place! The Mac n cheese & mashed potatoes were great! Service was quick. I was looking for a quick bite to eat, close to the Hilton Garden Inn. Yelp turned up Mama's as being a highly rated spot, just around the corner and it did not disappoint. Even though it was Monday, I decided to skip the red beans and rice and go directly to a fried shrimp po' boy - great decision! My coworkers hyped this place up for sure so I was optimistic coming from out of town. I'm a huge foodie and love trying things I can't get back home. I got the fried green tomato sandwich and the first thing I saw was a hair out of my sandwich.... I showed my waitress and she didn't even say a word to me and just took it to the back. It was remade and hot and again the waitress said nothing to me and just dropped it off. The only reason I'm not giving one star was the food was good! The sandwich was amazing but our waitress was just overall rude, I felt like I was being a burden that there was hair in my sandwich so that ruined my first and overall experience. read more

Went to this place after church with me kids, hoping to see Mama. See no Mama. Where Mama for my kids? Food is good.

I had the fried chicken, squash, cucumber and tomato salad, and fried okra. The fried chicken was spectacular. Everything was cooked fresh and arrived quickly. Service was fast and friendly. All the food was seasoned well but not over seasoned or covered up with butter, I will definitely return. I left there full and I'm 250 pounds and was hungry when I got there. read more

Great service! Very kind and helpful and patient. Good variety of food on the menu. I like the decor is well done. I ordered the butter beans, black eyed peas, cabbage, cucumber tomato salad. It was all good. The black eyed peas were probably my favorite. My wife ordered the fried green tomato BLT. She liked it. The service was great. Very quick with a congenial waitstaff. However, the food was just ok. Not good, not bad. I do plan on going back to try something else. Service was great our waitress was very nice and helpful when ordering. As we had lots of questions on the menu. Was disappointed we couldn't order the crawfish as they where out. I ordered the shrimp po boy and I wasn't a huge fan. It didn't have much flavor or sauce so it was a little dry. The food is delicious and service is very efficient. Lovely decor fitting for the location in historic, downtown Mobile. There were four of us for lunch, on Monday. We arrived about 1130 and had no wait. We ordered fried fish and shrimp, fried chicken, meat loaf and red beans and rice with Conecuh sausage. Each had a corn muffin and we shared sides, green beans, black eyed peas, collards, butter beans, macaroni and cheese and tomato cucumber salad. All of the sides were delicious, the collards flavor was improved with a strong dash of pepper vinegar. The only reason for less than five stars was that we weren't asked if we wanted dessert and our check was divided into two parties when we had asked for one. Will we go back? You'd better believe it! Came in to meet some friends for lunch. Got the Shrimp platter with the squash casserole and the yams with a side of fried okra. My shrimp was hot and fresh and the yams were delicious. Okra was not fresh and the squash casserole wasn't very flavorful but it was fast and friendly service. My friends ordered the baked chicken collar greens with an overwhelming piece of bacon, and beans. I was underwhelmed by the amount of food cooked with pork. The cabbage, collards, and the green beans. In this day and age you would think people would know how to cook without all the hypertension causing foods and additives. Went for lunch today, I had Chicken Fried Steak, Black Eyed Peas, Rice/Gravy, and Fried Okra. The food was all tasty, sand tasted homemade the issue was it just didn't come out hot at all. Portions were sufficient which for me is good I hate leaving a place feeling stuffed, and we didn't we felt satiated. We both ordered a cup of the gumbo, which never came and the server realized it as she was bringing the check. She was apologetic and offered to bring it to us which we declined as we were done eating. Serrice was great everyone was rushing around and managing the crowd....would I go back, yes I would....the food was good, local home cooking and the people were great. It was OK. The Mama's chicken was pretty good, but it was served lukewarm, as were the fries and green beans. I also don't think it is right to charge more for the use of a credit card--a recent practice of many restaurants which used to be prohibited by the credit card companies. While visiting and socializing in downtown Mobile I have had the opportunity to have lunch here twice. All previous reviews have given all their pluses. The two that stood out to me were service and quality. While they are very busy waiting is handled in a timely manner and the aroma of the food along with the chatter of the patrons make for a short wait. A server quickly come to your table for drink orders and if your ordering the daily special you can go ahead and put in your order. I would recommend the daily specials but some in our party ordered from the regular menu with out any issues. The food was exceptional with my favorite being meatloaf with mashed potatoes and tomato gravy on the side. I love dipping. While the banana pudding comes highly recommended it didn't register highly with me but....wifey exclaimed it was great!!! Happy wife... happy life! read more

We stopped here on a whim while taking a quick day trip to Mobile. Wow... I was impressed! I'm one of those northerners who obsesses about pimento cheese (all cheese, really)... it's not easy to come by in the northern states. It was very easy to pick the pimento grilled cheese so I could share with my three year old (no kid's menu). So good. Don't pass by the squash casserole without giving it a try... yum! The prices are fantastic. Maybe Mobile is cheaper than other areas around the gulf coast, but lunch options for $9-$13 are terrific! Service was fast, friendly, and accommodating.
