NoJa - Filet, Brussels Sprouts, and Fingerling potatoes

In the middle of downtown Mobile is NoJa. It is a rustic vibe inside, with a good amount of…read moreseating, brick walls and large front windows to watch the bustling street. We were in town for Mardi Gras and had reservations with friends and family for dinner on a Friday night. The menu is a prefix with several options including some off menu options and all were delicious. They have a great drink selection as well as a several mocktail selections. Our server was wonderful and took time to explain menu options, make recommendations and ensure that the allergy concerns in our party were handled. We had a great time and would recommend stopping in if you're in the area.

I was excited to try Noja. I like the fixed price for the three course meal. The atmosphere is…read moregreat and service was excellent (thank you Zack). For our first course, I chose the seared scallops and hubby got the fish cakes. The scallops were Excellent! Served with butternut squash grits and pesto. The dish was as beautiful as it was delicious. Hubby's fish cakes were ok but nothing special. The breading overpowered the halibut. Next we both had the spring salad. It was nice and fresh but it really isn't strawberry season and it showed. For our entrees, hubby choice the panko crusted fish and I picked the line caught fish. The panko crusted was mahi mahi, a nice big fillet with the crunchy panko. A bit greasy but overall good. The Noja potatoes were a hit. The Brussels Sprouts were crispy but greasy. Unfortunately the line caught fish was a disappointment. It was golden tilefish. The filet looked beautiful but had absolutely no taste. It was served with a lemon caper sauce but the lemon completely overshadowed the fish. The restaurant was nice enough to offer a different entree but as a pescatarian, the options were limited. If I was a meat eater, I would give them another shot. It's a shame that while living on the coast, it is difficult to find a restaurant that consistently knows how to prepare an upscale fish dinner.

My partner and I went straight to the top floor and were seated in a spot that allowed us to see the entire city view. It was very clear that this was a fine dining spot, because I was given a blazer by the restaurant staff since I failed to dress up for this occasion. I have never tried alligator meat before and managed to taste it for the first time here. It tasted like popcorn chicken and having Thai chili sauce was a good move because it offered the dish good flavor. I didn't use any of the ranch dressing. The gulf shrimp chowder was extremely tasty because it contained a good amount of black pepper and a lot of shrimp and cream corn, making the soup taste creamy in a flavorful way. My partner had great things to say about the duck, which was a specialty dish. The maple glaze was obvious and provided the duck breast meat with good flavor. However, the green beans were very plain with barely any seasoning. I ordered the farmer's plate, which was a vegetarian dish, and I thought that it was overall only okay because the snow peas were very undercooked, and they occupied majority of the dish. The green tomatoes, tomatillos, and zucchini all tasted very good. In terms of desserts, the chocolate cake was very hot and moist inside, which made it clear that it was fresh. The outer crust was very crispy but the inside tasted too plain. The key lime pie was very well-made, with a soft layer of graham crackers along with tasty mango syrup and hibiscus reduction defining the extra taste. Overall they both tasted great. I must mention that our server Ashleigh was very attentive and helpful. My partner and I appreciated her help a lot during our experience. Also, it was good to listen to some quiet live performances during the dinner because it added an extra level of vibe.

The food was less than a study in mediocrity. For apps we had the shrimp & Brussels. Shrimp was decent & greens were dressed well. Six for that price we should've had Argentine or Jumbo. We are on the coast yall!! But sadly we had small to medium sized shrimp. My BFF had the lamb chops medium well w/spinach, fingerling potatoes & blueberry gastric. Lamb was well & overcooked, spinach was salty as hell. Best on plate was the potatoes. $62 MP reeeeediculous!! I had the single pork chop w/gravy with collard greens. Yall they put effin' SUGAR in the greens. Reeeeeediculous! That's a family or personal preference & should not be in a restaurant w/o full disclosure. They tasted HORRIBLE but didn't surpass the pork chop. The breading was salty & the gravy was even more so. What a salty sick to my mouth mess! They told me the cheesecake was homemade-I doubt it. Strawberries were not all fresh either & they are in season. I wasted my $214 & they charge for using a CC! Baybay I'll NEVER BE BACK. EVER. Drinks were good tho.
