What a great little spot. Everyone in here is so so friendly and the service and food is lightening fast. I ordered the grilled pimento cheese sandwich with fried okra and squash casserole and everything was excellent. The okra was well seasoned and crunchy. The squash casserole was full of flavor and nice and creamy. The grilled pimento cheese has just enough spice and the bread was nicely grilled. The prices are pretty good (everything above was $11) and can't wait to come back. Everyone around me seemed to be enjoying the banana pudding (I can't stand banana pudding so I wouldn't be able to give it a fair shot). YUM!!! Came here for lunch with a co-worker while we were in town. So glad she picked it! I had the "famous" chicken salad salad. I feel like a lot of places claim their chicken salad is famous, but this one really should be! I asked our server's suggestion for dressing and she recommended the ranch. I didn't even need it. The chicken salad itself was so flavorful I didn't want to taint it with the ranch. The tossed salad portion was crisp, chilled and fresh. I really enjoyed it. Service was amazing! My tea never got below half full and our server was the perfect amount of friendly, attentive and efficient. Highly recommend this for a quick lunch, or a long one! read more

Mama's is a local favorite meat and three located on Dauphin Street! Open for lunch Monday through Friday its a smaller, unassuming cafe with about 20 tables and a lunch counter! Few things to know, it gets busy and they cook everything fresh so that means that if the daily specials are what you are looking for, they have been known to run out! Secondly, its first come first served and there can be a line sometimes. Thirdly its street parking, and with Dauphin street being the place a great number of restaurants are, parking can be a drag. However, keeping those things in mind, if your in the mood for a great southern meal give Mama's a shot! Having been here on several occasions, I can tell you I have never had a bad meal here. The country fried steak, fried pork chops, fried chicken, the club wrap, and the salads are all amazing! The sides are all freshly prepared but I highly recommend the mashed potatoes and or macaroni and cheese! The ranch dressing for the salads is homemade and creamy and really is not something you want to pass up! The waitstaff is always friendly but on their game, get ready to have awesome service and an awesome meal! Mama's is an amazing meal served with true southern hospitality! Very poor customer service. I ordered a cup of gumbo and it was nothing but rice. I was already late going back to work when the server returned I politely asked for a different serving because there was nothing in the cup. She disappeared saying she would check on it. She never returned. When the second server finally returned with my bill, I said I dont want this because there is nothing but rice and it is a very small cup not worth $5.00. Wow now after 4 days MAMA put the bill thru my bank. I called again to say I didnt want the gumbo and they should not have charged me. The owner Marshall argues with me....well that's how his gumbo is....no apology for service or for charging for food I never ate. Also defending his $5 cup of rice. Delicious food. First time having fried green tomatoes and they were very good. Got the fried green tomato BLT on a wrap and it too was good. Husband got the bayou burger. It was supposed to be with mozzarella cheese but came with American cheese. He enjoyed it though. His bad for not saying anything. Friend got the meatloaf. Very good. French fries were great and the squash soufflé was really good as well. Banana pudding was so good. So we came to explore Mobile while staying in Pensacola and last time we were here from the advice of the candy store tried Noble South which was awesome. The day we came they were closed so we decided to go back to the candy store and ask for another suggestion. They told us Mamas. This place was pretty awesome. The waitress was super nice and the owner was right on top of things. I started with the gumbo which was not the best I had but it was good. Next time I'd get the cup of it because it was a lot. I had some fried chicken which was awesome and also the fried okra which was amazing. The turnip greens were also really good. Great home cookin and you get your food in 7 min or less. I'm always amazed how they can offer such good soul food and such great service. It's always packed out for lunch and yet you can actually get in and get out in less than 30 min. I usually get the pork chops and sides. My son and husband wanted fried chicken when we were on our way from NOLA to Birmingham. I yelped different places and this one stood out. OMGEEEEE!!!! The fried chicken was cooked perfectly (the boys may or may not have ordered a second plate). Each plate came with two sides, mashed potatoes, and cornbread. This is the second restaurant I've ever reviewed and also the worst one I've reviewed. The macaroni was cold and under cooked, the drinks tasted like water, and one of the employees are kind of rude. When you make a complaint or something he makes this weird "oh my goshhh" face. The cabbage taste like water. It had no flavor no seasoning no cabbage like taste. On the shrimp n grits the grits were cold and the little popcorn shrimp were over cooked in something that looked and taste like marinara sauce. I will never come back here again. Never. read more

I went on a Tuesday, I wanted fried pork chops but you can only have that on Wednesday's. So I got the grill pork chops and they where not good at all they where not grilled but boiled and then smothered in BBQ sauce. They left a boiling porky taste, Mac and cheese was okay. Love this place and wish I had not waited so long to enjoy lunch there. I heard about this place almost 1 year ago. I live in Mobile and it took me that long to get there. I would have given 5 STARS but the lunch only Mon- Fri. time frame is why I rated it 4. The lovely painted murals on the wall are from places around Mobile and it gives it a warm - feeling. Last few pics uploaded are mine. I loved my BIG bowl of chicken and dumplings...and the mashed potatoes WERE just like like homemade. I tasted the yams on the veggie plate and they are sweet with a few nice lumps in them. Co-worker also let me taste her Pork Chop..I was shocked at how tender and yummy it was...I will order that too next time. I just had to get the coconut cake to go due to being so full and I am so glad I did as I take a break to type this and eat it now as I go...The cake is so much like my grandmother's. Just a few doors down from Three George's ...but take note...the tables can not fit more that 6 - so if your party is larger you will need to sit separate like we did. Not open weekends or nights. Mama's was less than a 10 minute walk from the Hampton Inn - downtown, where I was staying. The atmosphere is very casual and it's clear the owners care more about the food than the ambience. Don't come here if you are looking for a fancy, top notch restaurant but if you are looking for great tasting soul food this is your place. I had the jambalaya which came with two sides (all side options were very traditional soul food options). I chose the candied yams and the squash as my sides and I also received a complimentary corn muffin (unfortunately couldn't try it as it's not gluten free). The service was really quick, I had my food in about 5 mins. Everything was delicious and the portions were very generous. The candied yams weren't warm enough but everything else was great. I tried a bite of the squash and it tasted like it might have been cooked in a flour/cheese (aka gluten-y) sauce so I didn't eat anymore. My entire bill was only $9.35. Overall, great place if you are looking for some authentic soul food. read more

I got the Mardi Gras burger today with candied yams and fried okra. The burger was a disaster. They substituted out the standard mozzarella cheese for American cheese without asking. The shrimp that come on the burger are served with the tail shells on and on the cheese, which means that they have to be removed from the tails before they can be eaten. The service was not good but not completely horrible. My drink was rarely refilled. The yams and okra were excellent, saving this review from being a 1-star. read more

We were in downtown Mobile and was looking for a place to have lunch. Mama's came up on my mobile Yelp. Both reviews were great, so we decided to stopped by and give it a try. I had the Cajun turkey special and my friend had the seafood platter both were very tasty. I thought the Cajun turkey was seasoned well but to some it maybe a bit salty. The mac and cheese was good. All entrees are served with two sides of your choice. What really hit the spot was the delicious banana pudding. It was not too sweet...more like eating ice cream than a pudding. Mama's have daily specials and this place gets really busy at lunch. So arrive either before the downtown work crowd or after. Friendly services. And the sweet tea was delicious, they gave us refills with to-go cups to take with. This place is across the street from the A&M Peanut Shop, so check it out if you're in the area. Great experience - love the atmosphere. The fried green tomatoes were as good as they get! The grits were thick and past-y, and the shrimp topping meager. Don't recommend that dish. My husband and I were looking forward to eating here and were just a little disappointed. We both enjoyed the country fried steak and my husband said that the fried okra was excellent, however, the brown gravy on the rice and the mashed potatoes tasted exactly like canned gravy and the mac & cheese was cold. The gentleman (owner or manager?) who waited on us was borderline rude, but the waitresses were very nice and friendly. Having recently moved to the area, I am still hunting out the good places to eat. So far, I have not had much luck. I've been relying on the recommendations of people from the area, and also yelp. My mother had come to town, and we were looking for a place to eat lunch. I am from the north, and only know good soul food. But, soul food seems to have originated in the south. So, I was looking to be impressed. When I walked up, I saw the board with the specials on the sidewalk in front of the door. I don't remember everything that was written on it, because once I saw meatloaf and pork chops, nothing else mattered. We walked in and were seated right away. We were given menus, but I already knew that I was going to get the pork chops (although meatloaf is one of my very favorite things). I had to look at the menu to see what sides I wanted. I was surprised when the waiter asked me what two sides I wanted, because the pork chops come with mashed potatoes and gravy, so I just assumed that was one of the sides. I was wrong. I still got to pick two sides. I chose mac n cheese and turnip greens. My mom ordered catfish, which came with french fries, and she chose sliced tomatoes and fresh fruit as her sides. My food was good. I would not rant and rave over it, but it was equally as good as any soul food that I would get back in Milwaukee. I was happy to see that there were two different types of greens offered (turnip and collard), but I am a fan of mustard greens. I know, you can't please all of the people all of the time. I'll get over it. The pork chops were breaded and fried and covered in a flavorful brown gravy. The mashed potatoes tasted like real potatoes, and not the boxed kind. It came with a cornbread muffin. It was the sweeter Jiffy-esque type of cornbread that I love, and not the hot water kind. My mom said that the catfish was the best catfish she ever had. She said that it was perfectly cooked. She said that the breading was very thin, but it was so crispy. If the tastiness of the food was not enough to earn this restaurant some points, the prices were very reasonable. Cracker Barrel is better... I don't understand Mama's--it's usually crowded, but not that impressive. This place has a lingering, unpleasant odor. Not the way a restaurant should smell. That being said, it seemed clean. The food itself was thoroughly mediocre. Everything I had was bland. I've had macaroni and cheese out of a box that was better. What really puzzles me is that this sort of southern home cooking food is not that hard to make. If it's your specialty, it should be better. read more
