a hamburger and macaroni and cheese
    Niki A.

Husband was craving some bbq and out usual spots were closed on Mondays. We heard this place was good, so we had to try it. It's a hole in the wall. Tables are covered with advertisements for sponsors. Service was friendly. Food was pretty good. Not the best, but good. I am super picky about Mac and cheese and theirs just didn't do it for me. The bun on my pulled pork sandwich was a little hard. Most places toast it or whatever, but they didn't. The pulled pork itself was good but I wasn't a fan of the sauce. Again, just me being overly picky. The pickle was a nice surprise and I actually gobbled it down first. The bill was cheaper than expected. Will we go there again? Uncertain.

Great local place there is . We have had best breakfasts ever right here. There's nothing to say but delicious !

Best breakfast in town! We have had other meals too but hands down the breakfast's are amazing . Nice friendly staff too. Always clean !

Whole hog sampler with baked beans and fried okra

We stopped in on a Sunday night for dinner and weren't really blown away. My husband and I both got the baked beans and they were definitely our favorite part of the meal. Some of the best baked beans we've had! I got chicken and dumplings and it came out to me ice cold. Even if it had been warm, it still wasn't the best dumplin dish in my opinion. My husband got the whole hog sampler and liked the ribs and sausage. You could tell just how hardworking the staff was throughout the whole night, making sure every customer inside and in the drive thru was served while also having to pick up phones and do their normal nightly tasks. We would definitely like to come back and try some different menu items!

    Fried chicken, sampler platter

We came right before the church lunch crowd. The restaurant seems to have a pretty steady group of regulars. I ordered the sampler platter, my husband had the fired chicken special. Nothing really stood out. The fried chicken was juicy but not seasoned very well. The turnips were nice and savory, and they brought peppers in vinegar to the table. That was the highlight of the meal. Mac n cheese is not homemade. For a place named the hickory pit, I'd expect the ribs to have a smoke flavor. I have a hunch that they're cooked in the oven. The pulled pork was mediocre, the smoked sausage was conecuh. Everything was covered in bbq sauce, which tasted a whole lot like sweet baby ray's. Sweet tea was weak and not very sweet. Cornbread was dry and rubbery. It could be I didn't order the right thing today. The special was roast and gravy, which seemed to be what everyone was eating. I was hoping for more out of a bbq joint.

My"go to" breakfast place... Great service. Great breakfast. GREAT prices. And, if you're in search of the elusive tomaro gravy for your biscuit or hash browns...guess who's got it!?!? This place...and it's yum. Great burgers too. Oh! And PHENOMENAL fried chicken! I hit up the Hickory Pitt probably every week. It's good, consistent southern cooking.

two bowls of macaroni and cheese

Potato salad was mostly mayonnaise. It was awful. The chicken was dry. They put bbq sauce on it to disguise it. I kept waiting to hear a dog yak on a bone. The okra was good. Mac and cheese was terrible. Meat sample was very dry as well. There were flies and it smelled of fish inside. One star for okra. Tried to eat, but yikes!!!

I ordered the meaty breakfast burrito and it didn't have a lot of flavor so it just wasn't that good.

Burgers from the Hickory Pit are immaculate. The crawfish is super good too, but ya gotta get there early for that.

Now for delivery I knew nachos was probably a pretty risky choice, but when they arrived they were still crispy and piled high with toppings.

I loved this place so much!…read more It's quirky, it's nostalgic, it's fun. We were there for lunch, so no live music, but there is a full calendar of acts. The food was fantastic! The sweet potato casserole was the best I've had, and the potato salad was fully loaded. Loved the sauce varieties, and had the mud pie for dessert which was scrumptious. The staff was so friendly and helpful. Lots of seating, lots of parking, lots to do...gift shop, glamping, the bayou, and of course "the poo with a view", lol.

We'd heard so much about this place and couldn't wait to try it. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment from the moment we walked in. The woman taking our order seemed irritated that we were asking questions about the menu. She wasn't friendly or welcoming at all. As for the food... save yourself the trip. It was so bad we threw almost all of it away. I didn't even think to take pictures because we were too shocked at how terrible everything was. We ordered a rack of ribs, brisket, and two sausages. Every single meat was extremely dry and overcooked. The ribs were so dry they felt like eating beef jerky covered in BBQ sauce. The brisket was the same--dry with BBQ sauce poured over it. The sausages were overcooked, dry, and honestly tasted more like Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage than barbecue. The sides were the only decent part of the meal. The mac and cheese was okay, but the collard greens were the standout. They were the only thing I actually finished. It honestly felt like everything was smothered in BBQ sauce to hide how dry and overcooked the meat was. Whoever is running the pit seriously needs to reevaluate the cooking process. We definitely won't be back. I only wish we'd kept driving and stopped somewhere else.

I ordered the sampler platter with four sides and cornbread for $35 before tax. Let me tell you, I got home and opened up the platter and then all the sides, and I knew this was about to be good. The pulled pork doesn't need any sauce; it doesn't need anything. It has flavor in every bite. Not one piece is dried out, then I ate one of them sausages....... these will be the death of me, the sausage was perfectly cooked I don't know if they make them but man that flavor with the smoke hit me like a flyball, the ribs, fell off the bone, these ribs are so good they give big known restaurants a run for their money and then the chicken, how do they get that skin so crispy and not Burnt or dried out that chicken is nostalgic. Let's get into these sides GET THE GREEN BEANS!!! Goodness, that flavor can awaken a sleeping person, so get them! Potato salad is very good. I love the freshness of the onion and how it was not oversalted. You could add more if you want, but it's very good! Baked beans--no words. The flavor is undeniably fantastic, and the savory richness with a little kick is so good. I mixed a bit of potato salad with the beans, and oh my!!! Mac and cheese will have you aching for more. The pepper was not overwhelming, just a perfect amount of spice, and the creaminess was in every bite; not one bite was plain. All the macaroni was covered in cheese as it should be. Lastly, every bite of cornbread had me grinning from ear to ear. Definitely try this spot out. This meal is enough to feed two adults and two teenagers, and no one will be disappointed or feel hungry! Check out their sitting area. I love the fans to keep the bugs away, and all the shade!
