a hamburger and macaroni and cheese
    Niki A.

Husband was craving some bbq and out usual spots were closed on Mondays. We heard this place was good, so we had to try it. It's a hole in the wall. Tables are covered with advertisements for sponsors. Service was friendly. Food was pretty good. Not the best, but good. I am super picky about Mac and cheese and theirs just didn't do it for me. The bun on my pulled pork sandwich was a little hard. Most places toast it or whatever, but they didn't. The pulled pork itself was good but I wasn't a fan of the sauce. Again, just me being overly picky. The pickle was a nice surprise and I actually gobbled it down first. The bill was cheaper than expected. Will we go there again? Uncertain.

Great local place there is . We have had best breakfasts ever right here. There's nothing to say but delicious !

Best breakfast in town! We have had other meals too but hands down the breakfast's are amazing . Nice friendly staff too. Always clean !

Whole hog sampler with baked beans and fried okra

We stopped in on a Sunday night for dinner and weren't really blown away. My husband and I both got the baked beans and they were definitely our favorite part of the meal. Some of the best baked beans we've had! I got chicken and dumplings and it came out to me ice cold. Even if it had been warm, it still wasn't the best dumplin dish in my opinion. My husband got the whole hog sampler and liked the ribs and sausage. You could tell just how hardworking the staff was throughout the whole night, making sure every customer inside and in the drive thru was served while also having to pick up phones and do their normal nightly tasks. We would definitely like to come back and try some different menu items!

    Fried chicken, sampler platter

We came right before the church lunch crowd. The restaurant seems to have a pretty steady group of regulars. I ordered the sampler platter, my husband had the fired chicken special. Nothing really stood out. The fried chicken was juicy but not seasoned very well. The turnips were nice and savory, and they brought peppers in vinegar to the table. That was the highlight of the meal. Mac n cheese is not homemade. For a place named the hickory pit, I'd expect the ribs to have a smoke flavor. I have a hunch that they're cooked in the oven. The pulled pork was mediocre, the smoked sausage was conecuh. Everything was covered in bbq sauce, which tasted a whole lot like sweet baby ray's. Sweet tea was weak and not very sweet. Cornbread was dry and rubbery. It could be I didn't order the right thing today. The special was roast and gravy, which seemed to be what everyone was eating. I was hoping for more out of a bbq joint.

My"go to" breakfast place... Great service. Great breakfast. GREAT prices. And, if you're in search of the elusive tomaro gravy for your biscuit or hash browns...guess who's got it!?!? This place...and it's yum. Great burgers too. Oh! And PHENOMENAL fried chicken! I hit up the Hickory Pitt probably every week. It's good, consistent southern cooking.

two bowls of macaroni and cheese

Potato salad was mostly mayonnaise. It was awful. The chicken was dry. They put bbq sauce on it to disguise it. I kept waiting to hear a dog yak on a bone. The okra was good. Mac and cheese was terrible. Meat sample was very dry as well. There were flies and it smelled of fish inside. One star for okra. Tried to eat, but yikes!!!

I ordered the meaty breakfast burrito and it didn't have a lot of flavor so it just wasn't that good.

Now for delivery I knew nachos was probably a pretty risky choice, but when they arrived they were still crispy and piled high with toppings.

To say this food was cooked with love and every bit of the best seasonings would be an understatement - it all tasted great and was an ultra 10 out of 5!! The locals obviously knew it well as they were lined up waiting for some of all this lil gem had to offer. The menu was a bit confusing but once we figured it out we got an oxtail meal that was the star, a baked chicken dinner and a macaroni and cheese plate with double Mac and cheese and a side of cheese dressing. There are daily specials and meals come with sweet tea. Any other drinks like lemonade or kool aid come at a up charge of $1.99. You place your order first then grab a table to eat or take to go. Just go experience this slice of heaven on earth if in the vicinity, both your stomach and wallet will thank you after the fact.

I was finally able to make a point of making a special trip over there on a Saturday late afternoon. Unfortunately it still wasn't the best timing for a first trip or making a review as we were limited to what we could order based on the fact that their hours state they close at 5 but they shut the kitchen down at 4:30 and we got there just after 4. It's hard going out for dinner to a place that closes at 4:30. I ordered a sausage sandwich which to my delight was not the monotonous Conecuh. It was really good and reminiscent of some of the whole in the wall places in Texas that does good sausage. The only draw back was that being near closing time they didn't have links but was able to do slices. It was good but hard to eat. My hubs got chicken and ribs. I liked the ribs... they still had some bite, tender but not falling apart, and the smoke is mild, not overkill like so many other places do. Hubs wasn't a huge fan of but I thought they were nice. The chicken was on the dry side, but I never go to a bbq joint to order chicken so it's not a deal breaker for me. The only major downer was that all of our sides seemed to be standard pre-made and ordered items, not made in-house. I also liked the hole in the wall vibe, the friendly staff, and the divine smoke aroma that lets you know you're in the right bbq joint. All in all I enjoyed their Q and will need to go back when I can get the timing right to sample their steam table offerings.

Today I ordered fried pork chop, candied yams, loaded potato salad, collard greens, banana pudding, and blackberry cobbler (was told it was blueberry)! The pork chop tasted ok, cold but ok. The candied yams were out of the can with a bitter sweetness of honey or syrup, I truly could not identify. They were too bitter to enjoy. The greens were tough and seasoned with some type of hot sauce that took away from the natural taste of homecooked greens. The loaded potato salad, well....just stay away. Cobbler was just down right disgusting as in not even edible. The banana pudding was pudding out of the can with black bananas and soggy nilla wafers. This was my first order and will be my last one. However, if their cafe lasts for any length of time and I see plenty of patrons, I may be willing to try again but that will be no time soon. I'd passed it a few times while driving on Airport Boulevard. I was working from home so I went there on my lunch break. When I walked inside I saw a few patrons sitting at tables. There was a a buffet style counter set up with the work staff behind it. Each of them greeted me as I walked toward the counter. I was asked what I wanted and I said thought instantly about the fried chicken I saw. I ordered that and the meal comes with three sides and cornbread as well. I chose mac and cheese, black eyed peas, and mash potatoes and gravy. The server rung me up and I took my plate to go. I can't remember the first thing I tasted when I got home. I believe it was the mac and cheese. It doesn't really matter. The sides were really good. Mac and cheese is usually my favorite side but I thoroughly enjoyed the black eyed peas. Don't get me wrong the mac and cheese was excellent but the peas were superb. The mash potatoes were creamy and the gravy was savory. The cornbread was the type that had the pieces of corn in it. I liked it. Now the main course was of course the chicken. It really looked and tasted like authentic homemade fried chicken. I loved the seasoning on the chicken. It was some of the best chicken I've had in a while. I definitely want to come back.
