Updated, went for breakfast today because new fast food across street once again is only accepting cash and I had no cash so we came here instead. Really wasn't dressed for eating inside but went in anyway. The pancakes are huge and there was no way we could even eat half of them but they were tasty. This place is a hidden gem! Yes, at times the service is a little slow and the place isn't fancy, but it has always been clean. The staff are always friendly and ready to serve! My husband and I eat out a lot and the food and prices at the Iron Skillet can't be beat. They have a daily all you can at lunch buffet of veggies and meats for a very low price. I love the AMAZING salad bar as a side and homemade onion rings! How could anyone choose fast food over this treasure? read more

First impression upon entry is... Wow, this place is ugly. From bad decor to torn up bench seating, and old and ugly round tables. We arrived at lunch time and I decided to order something that can't be messed up. A burger with fries. My wife ordered shrimp that came with a salad bar. Don't let the size of the 6 foot salad bar throw you off, it has plenty of fixin's. Part of the salad bar included coleslaw and carrot salad, which I tried. Now I think I have had worse stuff in my mouth but I would gladly eat a bowl of mud before I tried that nasty stuff again. The rest of the salad bar was very good. My burger was a half pound of meat with everything you'd want on it and some frozen crinkle cut fries. My wife's shrimp was cooked exactly the way she likes it and sweet potato fries were fresh and very tasty. The hushpupies were yummy. I could just eat a plate of those. So I'll give zero stars for the ambiance, coleslaw, and frozen fries. Everything else was great. Rounding down to 3 stars as not quite up to 4 star standards. read more

It was the 1st time my husband & I went there. It was for breakfast & we were the only table in there. I ordered 2 eggs & hash browns...the hubby ordered biscuits & gravy & sausage. 15 min later the waitress & a cook sit at the table next to us to eat. Using their fingers I might add..and I saw the waitress take a drink order out to a table without washing her hands. 10 min after that..we still haven't received our food yet they're still eating. So after 25 min without food & hearing a microwave go off we got up & left. It's also very dark in the from "black out" curtains I'm sure to cover up the dirt as my husbands shoes were sliding across the floor from a greasy film. We'll never go back! Alright... First impression of this place was: oy vey. Looked a little sketchy from the outside. When my family and I walked in, everybody got quiet and stared at us (looked as if the whole town had come out). The smell was absolutely horrible, like an old woman's bedpan. STICK WITH IT THOUGH. We got seated right away and the waitress came and got our drink orders. She was very friendly and explained to us Northern folk what exactly grits were (we stopped here on our way to the Gulf). The food came rather quickly and I think we were all surprised at the quality of the food. I got a short stack of pancakes and they were some of the best pancakes I've ever had that I didn't make myself. Stopped in for a late lunch (1:00). Buffet was well stocked with meatloaf, baked chicken, fried catfish fillets and bbq pork. Several vegetable and dessert options. We enjoyed our lunch. Looks to be a local favorite. read more

We stopped here for supper on the way to Gulf Shores. We had a party of 6 adults and 4 small children, and she told us we could push tables together if we wanted to. She didn't offer to help or offer to get any high chairs for us. Not very friendly taking our orders or bringing food. The catfish and oyster po boy was actually very good considering how unwelcoming the staff and overall atmosphere were. They were out of coleslaw, which no other vegetables to offer as a side except for the salad bar which barely even had any lettuce left in the bowl. So they get 3 stars for the food being good, but definitely lacking in the service department. read more

I had checked out reviews on Yelp but had my doubts when we pulled in, it doesn't look like much on the outside or inside for that matter but it was fantastic food! They were extremely busy because they were boxing up over 100 to go orders for the national guardsmen in the area. They were super friendly and apologetic for the wait, which wasn't long. They were filling the to go orders from the buffet but they recovered quickly and had some great fried chicken, shepherds pie, pasta and sides ready in no time. We live in this town. Our last experience wasn't very good. We decided to give them another try this morning for breakfast. We were the only customers in the place!!! Which makes what happened outrageous. We ordered and the waitress put in our order. Then after about 15 minutes, the waitress and one of the cooks came and sat down at the table next to us with THEIR plates of food and started eating. We waited about 10 more minutes and then we left. Shouldn't the customer come first? If the staff is going to eat breakfast, do it before you open the doors. I don't go to work, clock in and then sit down and eat breakfast. We will NEVER return!!! On a side note, the floors were so greasy that my shoes kept sliding on the floor, the bathroom is nasty and I can only assume the place is so dimly lit to keep customers from seeing the filth. This was at 0900 November 2.... they were already putting out the food on the lunch buffet, we looked at it and it was stone cold, just waiting to give people food poisoning at lunch time.!!! *** TIME FOR A VISIT FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT **** P.S. went down the street to Bertile's and had breakfast...
