The food was good as usual and the new place is super cute! We had a couple servers who went above and beyond and only a couple that made the visit a little less pleasant. I took my dad who struggles with Hodgkins and when he mentioned that his fries weren't crispy enough for him the waitress argued with him a bit. Luckily the other waitress got right to cooking them a bit longer for him! Mobile seems to have a few BBQ joints that are open only for lunch. In a rare occurrence of being in Mobile around lunch, I had to find a BBQ place to try. I pulled up Yelp and saw Cotton State BBQ with a rating of 4 and half stars. Well, it is a BBQ joint but with half the menu of your regular BBQ joint. There are no BBQ plates, ribs, or the standard sides here. There are BBQ sandwiches, nachos, baked potatoes, salads, hot dogs, and banana pudding and snowballs. The choices are sliced pork, brisket, and chopped chicken. Though the menu is limited, what they do offer, they so well. I went with the pork sandwich that came sliced on a big sesame seed bun. I like my pork pulled but the pork was good. Nothing else was on the sandwich. The BBQ sauce is on the table and it is a vinegar base concoction that also most likely has mustard and ketchup thrown in. It is mildly sweet with no heat. But it does go with the sandwich and fries well. The fries have their own seasoning. The only other side offered beside fries and chips is slaw. The slaw is shredded with a light mayo/vinegar base. It seemed to have some kind of extra spice to it to make it different. I liked it better on my sandwich than I did by itself. Some other notes: Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Parking is an issue as you have to park on the street and find parking that might require a walk of a block and parking has to be paid. I ate here on a Monday about 1130 and they are closed on the weekend....and they were already out of brisket. How does that happen? The place is kind of small but every table was full when I left. There were 2 college girls that were the waitresses and cashiers. At times, they seemed to be overwhelmed. Cotton State BBQ is a very minimal BBQ joint that serves great as a lunch spot. It wasn't what I hoped for when I look for a BBQ joint but what Cotton State does, they seem to do it well. read more

Delicious! I had the pork plate with two sides of coleslaw, which is amazing, not overly wet, has a mustard flavor. My husband had the brisket nachos, were filling. My Dad has the brisket salad, it was a healthier choice, he ate it all! My mom had the brisket potato, it was a the biggest potato I have ever seen, she ate it all with our help. The brisket was the favorite. Their homemade bbq sauce we were practically drinking it on the nachos! So yummy! The banana pudding was sweet but delicious, we like the banana pudding from Smokin Po Boys in winder GA better, but we would order this one again too! Good BBQ but the service is slow at best. Today it took nearly 1 hour to get a Brisket Salad I ordered. Everyone seated in the restaurant waited for nearly an hour while they filled To-Go orders. When asked what the holdup was, the waitress tersely replied they were filling orders sent in last week. If they had that much advance notice why didn't they plan better / start ealier / staff up or just close the sit in area? I ended up using the entire lunch hour waiting for my food! read more

This place is a hidden little gem in Downtown Mobile. They have excellent BBQ and their prices are very good. They have a little different menu which I enjoyed immensely. The staff was very good. Cotton State is in the located in downtown Mobile. You can smell the smoke flavor from blocks away. If you follow your nose you will end up at cotton state bbq. They are always packed with happy customers. I ordered the brisket nachos. It comes with cheese, brisket and the chips are freshly made when you order. (Those are the best tortilla chips I've ever had) it also comes with jalapeños, sour cream & bbq sauce on the side. I really enjoyed my nachos but the brisket was overly greasy. Soooo good! As a Memphis girl, I've struggled a bit with a lot of the BBQ places around here. This isn't one I have to struggle with. I even noticed BBQ nachos on the menu. I'll be trying those next time. My pick for the day was the BBQ baked potato. Why? Well, because they slice the pork on the sandwiches and I prefer my BBQ pulled. It's still good, still has that smoke ring, but I have a hard time getting past the texture. Not complaining though, because the pork on the potato is pulled or chopped, and it's just right. Plus, I like the way the smoky pork flavor and sauce mix with the sour cream and cheese and baked potato. It's addictive. For dessert, I had to try the Moon Pie banana pudding because my coworker raves about it. It's made fresh by the owner's mom every morning. (She must really love that boy!) It's rich and creamy, made with Nilla Wafers and topped with a heavy dose of whipped cream and a quarter of a banana Moon Pie. The service was good and the little place was cute, nothing fancy. My total meal was about $16, which isn't bad for Mobile. I left fat and happy! read more

The brisket on the sandwich was sliced thinly for the most part. It had a cured-like quality to it, as if the brisket was seasoned & salted far ahead of being smoked. The flavor was beefy and rich--I didn't even bother with the sauce. The accompanying cole slaw was savory and had some garlic in it. It paired extremely well with the sandwich. This is a nice little place to go grab a BBQ sandwich. I had the brisket sandwich. The meat is sliced thin and pretty tender. Like most brisket, it is a little dry but not so bad you will not enjoy it with a little sauce. The sauce is a sweet southern red. I did not have any sides because the sandwich by itself was $8. Most sandwiches are around $6 and sides are $2. I was not in the mood to drop $15 for lunch, including tip. read more

Visiting in this area from up North, We were referred to this so-called "BBQ" joint by two different locals and decided to give it a try, and mistakenly so. As we walked in shortly before 1pm, we noticed two employees having lunch at a table for guests...and seated rather close to the front entrance. We were greeted with a "Hi-y'all, sit wherever." There were several tables open, and perhaps that should have been a warning sign. After a few minutes, the waitress stood up from her lunch and came over to ask for drink orders, which she promptly filled, and followed by our meal orders. I ordered the beef brisket nachos and my colleague Ordered pork french fries. After submitting our orders she resumed eating with her fellow employee, and a few minutes later another employee exited the kitchen with a lovely looking plate of nachos and sat down near the entrance and began to have his lunch. Every once in a while the waitress would stand up and refill our drinks, but the refills became fewer and fewer as time wore on awaiting for our lunches to arrive. The order took roughly 25 to 30 minutes to fulfill. I was immediately disappointed when I initially received my brisket nachos. I heard several different stories of how brisket and barbecue is best in the south, so my expectations were rather high. And mistakenly so. The waitress placed two small plastic cups on the table one had two small slices of jalapeño. The other held 2 tablespoons worth of sour cream. I did not understand why the employees nachos looked so great and scrumptious, however mine looked bland, and unappealing. The chips were crispy and had a nice flavor... However, that was the best part of my plate. The cheese was incredibly mild and flavorless. It had no jalapeños on its own, there was no barbecue sauce within the nacho platter. It appeared as if they had taken an ice cream scoop to a tub filled with razor thin sliced beef brisket. The brisket itself had no seasoning and was again, bland. I was told there would be tomatoes and cilantro which was in the nachos... You just really had to search for it. After we were served our dishes, the waitress never returned to refill our drinks. She more importantly never return to inquire of our satisfaction of the entrées we were served. This was incredibly disappointing on many accounts. I was hoping for a good barbecue, and I have yet to find it. We both got up to pay the bill, and neither one of us were asked about our meal, how was everything? Did we enjoy it? There was no inquiry as to our satisfaction of the meal and service. I was simply told my total for the order and shown the iPad screen where I can render gratuity and sign for the check. If you were interested in really good barbecue an exceptional southern hospitality... Search elsewhere. read more

Excellent...excellent BBQ. I personally like it when the Q-sauce is on the side, and that is how they do it here. This way, I can taste the protein dry and see how well they prepared it. The brisket was so tasty and tender that it didn't need any sauce. I added some sauce anyway however, but only because I tried it by itself and really liked the sweet and smoky flavor. It just made what would have been a great brisket sandwich excellent. The cole slaw was also a great addition. Not sweet at all and full of flavor. Even though both were delicious, the standout was the Moon pie pudding. I overheard one of the servers talking about it with a customer and she raved about it. She wasn't overselling. It was completely f-ing delicious. It is a must get, and they run out so make sure you get there early part of lunch and be use to ask for one. You won't be disappointed. Parking is difficult for this little restaurant in downtown Mobile -- we had to park a block away but the BBQ is really good. My husband had the BBQ pork sandwich which was moist, meaty & smoky (but not overly so). I didn't care for the tangy BBQ sauce which didn't appear to be homemade. Their menu is limited (no ribs) and I didn't want BBQ that particular day so I ordered one of their "hotdogs" which is really a conecuh sausage. I may be the only Alabamian alive who doesn't like conecuh sausage (it's always very greasy to me) but this "dog" was pretty good. read more

Pass on nachos and potatoes unless you like store bought chips and nacho cheese tasted like it came from a gas station. This restaurant is just off Dauphin Street, and as a visitor to Mobile, I'm glad I checked Yelp for recommendations (I might not have seen it otherwise). The pork BBQ sandwich was perfect and delicious for a to-go lunch, and I honestly wish I'd gotten two.
