Neighbor's is a diner-like restaurant that's a bit off the beaten path. There are daily specials that seem to attract quite the following. By the time we arrived, a bit after 6:30 pm, the chicken and dumplings were sold out. We ordered chicken fried chicken (which came with 2 sides) and a fried shrimp salad, (a dinner-sized) green salad topped with lightly fried shrimp and lots of croutons. While it took a bit of time before the food arrived, portions were quite generous, and the food was tasty. My husband said the potato salad and slaw were both on the sweet side, but he enjoyed them and the fried chicken. Service was very friendly. Payment is at the front counter, and there's a small surcharge for anything other than cash. After seeing reviews of this restaurant on Yelp and elsewhere, I thought it might be a good choice for us. We were down the street at the Dreamland Skate Center for an event and stumbled on Neighbors after an online search. What a nice surprise! The inside is clean and bright. The staff were very friendly and cheerful - mostly teenagers working but all were chatty and willing to help. The menu is larger than I would expect. This presents a problem because it's difficult to choose what to eat -and- it means I'll have to go back to try something else. We both got vegetable plates so we could sample as many of the veggies/sides as possible. Everything was tasty and very nicely done. Some dishes were a little salty but nothing inedible. Well the AYCE Fried Chicken got me again. What's wrong with me? I ate way too much and am suffering for it. When will I learn? The chicken was fabulous the sides were as expected, only set back is the mac and cheese is not as good as the rest, but everyone needs an Achilles heal, and perfection would just spoil me. Luck was on my side as Chris was our server again, that guy is tops. We had no complaints at all, did over hear a conversation at the next table where he had to substitute pot roast for an entree that was sold out (after checking with the customer for the sub) and he took that off the bill. Customer requested he not because he was so helpful, but he made another excuse and did it anyway. That my friends is why I tip him so well, (he got more on this 43 buck meal than the gal on my 175 tab last night, and she didn't get shorted) he is a super star and makes the visit better just by being himself. I hope his folks know how he is outside of home and are proud. Somebody raised him well. Bottom line, if you are looking for great home style cooking and no dish washing, this little gem is the spot. 6.5/10 - old family diner with good southern food I thought all the food was super flavorful, and we all came home with leftovers. Their breading was A+. Really enjoyed the fried chicken! And tried fried squash which was actually pretty good. IF you like chicken gizzards and livers, my friend said they do them right. The gizzards aren't too tough which is apparently a problem. A colleague and I had lunch there today. Country cooking, seafood etc.. I had a sirloin steak with gravy, cabbage and red beans and rice. It was all tasty. Service was a little slow but very pleasant. It was lunchtime and there was a line out the door. We had to wait but it wasn't an unreasonable amount of time. Before hitting the road back to Birmingham , we decided to stop here for dinner. Their menu is massive which made it hard to decide just what to order. I knew I wanted seafood so that helped to narrow down my choices. I ordered the fried shrimp dinner with coleslaw and fried okra as my two side items. The meal also came with hush puppies. I absolutely loved their hush puppies! My sister ordered the fried catfish dinner and my mom ordered the bite size shrimp dinner. We got our food to go since we were needing to get on the road. This might have not been the best idea as I feel the food would have been more enjoyable dining in. We still enjoyed our food , nonetheless. All of our meals were prepared fresh and the portions were HUGE! I forgot to mention that I also ordered a small gumbo..... I wasn't crazy about it so I didn't eat all of it. Like I said , we all enjoyed our dinners but next time I will request my shrimp to be fried hard. Otherwise , the seafood was really fresh tasting! Don't miss this place if you crave great, crispy fried chicken. It's an older converted fast food restaurant so the interior is spartan and clearly they do a big take out business. We had fried chicken and fried shrimp--to explore both specialties. Both were outstanding. Fried crispy but meat remained moist, not dried out. The sides were superior. We both got Lima beans--really butter beans--really delish.. The slaw got a thumbs up and I thought the blackeyed peas were exceptional. Table service was just fine. Delicious and friendly. Honestly wish I lived nearby. I would love to have tried the all you can eat but I had fries and a cat fish Poboy. Both were fantastic. Country cooking and great hospitality describe this down home restaurant. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with a smile and a menu full of choices from chicken livers to seafood platter. We chose the flounder dinner and Chicken livers. The waitress suggested the all you can eat flounder which came with three veggies. The chicken livers came smothered in gravy and I added black eyes peas. The food was good. The livers were great but the fish just ok. I really liked the sweet tea too. We stopped in Mobile Alabama for the night and this place was close to the hotel. Amazing food! I got the fried shrimp with fried okra and turnip greens. Shrimp was fresh with a crispy, flavorful batter. Turnip greens were nicely braised with perfect seasoning. Fried Okra was nice and crispy. Hubby got the fried chicken with cheese grits. Always my go to place for southern comfort food as it's close to home. Great fried chicken and catfish too, even gizzards and liver! Sides are good especially red beans and rice with okra. I was passing by and decided to try this place for dinner, plus they had a drive thru. I decided to get the seafood combo, I got shrimp and crab claws with cabbage and mac and cheese. I must say that cook your food to order so expect a little wait if your going thru the drive thru. But it's worth the wait to get hot off the grease fried seafood. My crab claws and shrimp were fried just right definitely not over fried. I decided to get Tatar sauce instead of cocktail, the tartar sauce was sooo good! It tasted like a dill tartar, I believe they made it themselves but it tasted like a tartar sauce I'm familiar with.. I'm thinking Ken's but any hoot good tartar sauce. Also the portions of seafood was kind of small for the price. The cabbage wasn't bad just needed a little salt and pepper. The Mac wasn't bad just needed some sprucing up ( you know).
