Wow, wow, wow. Things are changing at this almost 40 year old restaurant in Robertsdsle, AL. Last month they had a 5 course Italian meal every Friday and Saturday night. For June, they are offering night service on Friday's, still 5 courses and the food is amazing. It's called the Southern Revival menu. The spare ribs are like nothing you have ever had before. They said they were cooked confit style for 5 or 6 hours, after a 24 hour cure, then rested for one day and finished with Ann amazing glaze (so 3 days to make these ribs). The watermelon salad is out of this world, then the short ribs were not over mashed potatoes- no ma'am, think more like Joel Rubechon Pomme puree- velvety smooth potatoes and crispy onion straws on top. The Banoffee Pudding is banana pudding taking up about 10 notches. You definitely want to check this out and you will want to call by Thursday morning to make a reservation. Went there on Thanksgiving day. Front doors locked and the place half full at opening time of 10:30 am. Finally a waitress let us in and then I notice the food line was out to the rear door and that is where everyone was coming in. We decided not to eat there and then I found out the front doors were locked and I couldn't unlock them. Waitress had to unlock. This is a no no in the any business to have the front doors locked during operating hours. It's a death trap if there is a fire in the place. I have built restaurants and I have always had to put a sign on the doors for the doors to remain unlock during business hours. If the town had a fire marshall, they could be given a ticket for locking the doors. read more

Actually, I'll pass on a return trip. The service was adequate. For the price that I paid for Sunday lunch, there are literally hundreds of better choices. My Grandma burned almost every thing that she fried. Her vegetables were all out of a can. The flavor and nutrition was thrown out with the well used Crisco. Everything tasted the same. When my parents first moved to Baldwin County in 2001, we regularly visited Mama Lou's. There was a change of ownership at some point and the food and service quality took a dip. My parents hadn't been here in many years, but on a recent visit, I read new reviews posted about the restaurant and they were praising the food and service...so, I took my mother for the first time in years and it turned into four visits during my extended stay. First off, this is a kitchy, Cracker-Barrel looking place that's simple and easy and homey. But, it's original and locally owned. Everything is made from scratch and fresh and delicious. You enter through the front and proceed straight to the back to the buffet. It's double-sided with trays, plates, and cutlery. A server comes to get your drink order immediately and has it delivered to your table just as quickly. First at the buffet is the salad. There's a great choice of greens, toppings, fresh vegetables, cheese, egg, dressings, bacon, croutons, etc. They also have very delicious coleslaw. Next up in line are the desserts. They typically have three or four choices of pudding, mousse, cake, or cobbler. I will honestly say they're not the best desserts I've ever had, it the entree choices make up for it. Following are the vegetable choices. You get standard choices you'd get at any meat-and-three. Everything is fresh and hot and well-seasoned. On my few visits, I enjoyed the mac and cheese, summer squash, green beans, lima beans, black-eyed peas, collards, turnips and, of course, the fried chicken. Simply heavenly. I live in Savannah and get to eat the perfect Lady and Son's fried chicken and I will say Mama Lou's comes quite close to it. Go hungry and eat your meal of the day. You'll leave full and happy with a memorable experience. Remember to tip the staff for taking care of your messy plates and for refilling your drinks. They work hard and deserve it. My husband took me here for lunch. If he hadn't insisted, I would have turned and walked out. I'm glad I didn't. The very good, actually incredible Fried Chicken is why I'm giving them three stars. If you go just for chicken, you're good. It smelled like mothballs inside the restaurant to me, but I'm sure that's just me. It was really crowded. You go through a buffet line and get a plastic plate kind of like a school lunch room, except you serve yourself. You can also get little bowls and put vegetables or whatever like that don't fit in your sectioned plate or you don't want to touch your other food. Coffee, Iced Tea, or water are included in the price of your meal. I got tea and they were good about bringing refills around. The other buffet items weren't that great to me, but the Fried Chicken was really good. Good enough that even though I'm only giving three stars I'd go back, but only for the Fried Chicken. read more

We drive from Orange Beach to eat here. One of our most favorite places to eat. The fried chicken is so delicious. All the meats are very good. Sometimes the vegetables are not great, but if you let your server know, it will be taken care of. When you walk in, you are always greeted by a friendly person. This is a mom and pop type place. Found this place on the AroundMe app, after seeing a line almost put to the road outside Lambert's in Foley. We had fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, dressing, broccoli, peas, bread pudding, and peach cobbler. The bread pudding was so so... but the cobbler was excellent, and the chicken was dang near perfect- some of the best I've ever had. Been going here to eat since I was a child, would always come here after Church with my grandparents and parents. Their mashed potatoes are absolutely amazing, they have a guy always carving meat that tastes wonderful. Their fried chicken is also amazing, I love to put vinegar pepper sauce on it. Their deserts are also good, they always have things like chocolate pudding and pistachio pudding. Parking is good, its a great place to have a lunch/dinner for the entire family. Eating at Mama Lou's is like sitting at my grandma's table! With a very long drive ahead of me, I decided to treat myself to some Southern comfort food this afternoon. My feast included country fried steak and creamy mashed potatoes topped with white peppered gravy, black-eyed pea's, squash, cabbage, hot buttered corn bread muffins, and peach cobbler. The only disadvantage to their generous buffet is that I just didn't have room to try the other salads, vegetables, desserts, and entrées offered. My waitress kept my tea glass full and asked multiple times if I had everything that I needed. The restaurant was pretty full when I departed, so I guess it is a local favorite. It's easy to see why :-). I think the only thing missing that grandma's table had was a little crystal dish of homemade sweet pickles. read more
