It is not a fancy place. So, if you are big into ambience and décor, just know this is not that place. But, if your are a foodie and appreciate good southern cooking, come on in! What a fun place. I wanted to order something rather basic. Being new to the south, I want to try 'southern' dishes. I asked if I could have a taste of the pimento cheese. Very tasty with a bit of a bite, not a bad bite, nice and it lets you know its there. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, and added the rest of the huge scoop of pimento cheese to it. OMG, how good. When I order a burger with bacon, it is not unusual to have the bacon hange out of the bun. What is unusual is to have the burger hang over the bun. It was a full meal in itself. I honestly felt bad about only tasting the two sides that came with the burger. Fries were crispy and fresh, the side of fried okra was much better than I had expected. (Hubby thought they were great and ate his and my orders). Well worth the time, I will return to this restaurant on my next trip to Mobile. read more

Great food. This was an impromptu stop for us. Unfortunately we didn't know a conference was going on in the area so it was extra busy. They did what they could with the staff. Wait times were long and the inside was hotter than the outside since the door was opening so much. I was disappointed that they ran out of squash casserole and didn't let me know until I got my food. Hopefully next time they will prep better when a conference is in town to accommodate all. Kind of disappointed. I had wanted to try Mama's FOREVER. Soul food/southern cooking is one of my favorite cuisines and I was really excited to try a place that had candied yams. What they have here is more like sweet potato casserole and it wasn't good! It was honestly one of the worst sweet potato dishes I'd ever had. It was watery and bland. They did have good macaroni and cheese though, just like my mom makes! The chicken and dumplings were pretty decent too, but I may prefer Cracker Barrel's. My husband wasn't a fan of his fried fish as the batter was very thick. If you're a health nut, you probably shouldn't eat at a place like this. But if you're about to fall off the wagon AND you're in Mobile, Alabama, Mama's On Dauphin is a good place to do it. I was in Mobile for a week and decided to try out some soul food based on a local's recommendations. I went to Mama's for 3 days and every visit was a positive one. Despite being filled to capacity nearly every visit, service was fast yet courteous. The food was sinfully good comfort food. Collard greens, pudding, and fried everything else was the order of each lunch. My personal favorite: chicken fried steak. By the way, if you're not from the South and you're ordering ice tea be sure to specify whether you want "sweet" or "unsweet" rather than "unsweetened" or "sweetened". Recommended. This is the old "meat and three" sort of place. It had a good vibe and I love downtown, but was not blown away. HOWEVER, I don't think this sort of food has caused me to gasp since my Grandmother's dinner table on Sundays. The veggies were good, but not seasoned correctly - even when cooking for guests - and there were too many heavy entrees as the "meat". It isn't on my list of places to return, but don't discount it if you are hungry in LoDa at lunchtime. read more

Your basic meat and three. Unusual to have one in a downtown city, but it fits into the neighborhood nicely. Nothing fancy, just good home cooking at a reasonable price. Their lunch plate is around $10, including drink, if memory serves me correctly. They have daily specials so keep an eye out for your favorite southern dish and it will probably be there. read more

I went here yesterday for lunch with my friend and it was pretty good. I always heard good things about this place so we gave it a try. The rice and gravy is OK. The fries were awesome and my croissant chicken salad was bomb! They closed at 2:30 on Monday and we got in at 2. We felt so bad! Also they ran out of a lot of food. We love the home grown southern favorites like, the Country Fried Steak, Shrimp n Grits, pork chops ( all on Tuesday's special), fried chicken and the list goes on. Picked up this recommendation from an "Alabama fried chicken trail" article. Pretty good chicken which was very moist. The banana pudding was to die for, and that whipped cream on top!! Can't beat the price either. My wife and I split a chicken dish (chicken, mashed potatoes, plus 2 sides) and a banana pudding for 13 bucks. Oh Mama! This is great southern comfort food and I love taking our family here to eat so they can feel at home. If you want to experience a fusion of southern and creole, go here! The po'boys (of any kind) are super delicious and come with a real down home side to choose from. You may walk right past this place when strolling through the downtown area, because to me it looks like an odd space. If you go on it you'll find that is a super neat place and you can even dine in the front window, which tells me that this may have been a department store at one time. The service is quick, almost too quick it seems. During the lunchtime hours, you'll see all types of Mobilians and tourists coming in to enjoy a very filling coastal Mobile experience. The food was pretty good and my mom enjoyed it as well. We have since then returned multiple times. I wish it didn't close so early but most restaurants downtown close early also. Having recently (recently - 4 days ago) moved my office to downtown Mobile - I am excited about the opportunity to reacquaint myself with the fantastic food available at the local restaurants in the downtown LODA area. So look for reviews on downtown restaurants as the days go by! We had lunch at Mama's yesterday (11/29). WHAT A DEAL!!!!!!!!! Two HUGE fried pork chops (smothered with gravy and onions of course); mashed potatoes (the REAL thing); collard greens (I'm pretty sure they were picked yesterday morning); macaroni and cheese (tangy - sharp - perfect); and the biggest cornbread muffin you can imagine! How much was all of this??? $6.95!!! My dining companion had the meatloaf and allowed me to trade a taste of the meatloaf for a taste of the pork chops. The meatloaf was "jump up and slap yo Mama" good as well. I'm not sure they can do anything BAD here. If they do - I've never had it. We're going for fish & chips at the Hurricane Brewing Company (across the street from Mama's) today. I'll try to write a review on that after lunch. I'm pretty sure I'm going to gain weight. Came here a few weeks ago with my girlfriend for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. I had the red beans and rice with Conecuh sausage and my girlfriend had the meatloaf. If you have a couple hours to spare on lunch, and never need a drink refill then it's fine. Waited longer to order than it took to get us our food. Then had to wait even longer for to get the check. The waitress spoke more when she brought the receipt for us to sign- after we had to track her down to give her the debit card-than the entire experience. What a gem of a place. We were driving back from Fort Walton Beach to New Orleans and decided to grab lunch in Mobile, Al. Mama's is situated in what looked like the heart of downtown Mobile. We were lucky to find parking half a block away. The restaurant was busy but we were able to get seated right away. Our server, Julie, was great! Quick, friendly and very nice. We ordered the shrimp and grits, fried fish plate and fried shrimp plate. My son says it was the best shrimp and grits he'd ever had. The food was fantastic.
