We found parking right around the corner, but it seems like we got lucky. The area is busy and almost all of the parking spots were taken. The front of the establishment doesn't stand out overly much, so we almost walked right by it. When you enter the building you walk straight back (through the entry that says this way to beignets!) and can order at the counter. The beignets were made fresh to order and covered in a mountain of powdered sugar. The latte was smooth and not too sweet. We stopped into Mo'Bay Beignet while downtown and it ended up being one of the highlights of our visit. I really like Mobile as a city. It feels like a junior New Orleans in some ways, but with its own distinct Gulf Coast personality. One common thread along the coast is beignets, not the frozen novelty kind, but real New Orleans style beignets done right. That is exactly what we were looking for. We made a beeline for Mo'Bay late in the day, close to closing time. There was no crowd, but they were more than happy to make a dozen to go for us. Powdered sugar everywhere, just as it should be. They make excellent beignets here and I would say they are just as good as Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. Beignets didn't come quickly, of course, as they're made fresh to order. As with any other beignet place, DO NOT wear a black short or any other dark color. You will have very noticeable powder sugar all over you. The beignets here are delicious! They're made from scratch, all day and every day. They have quite a story on how the company was founded. The cutest place, it would be a perfect place to go get an espresso and work if you were in town for business. There are plenty of tables, free WiFi, nice bathrooms, great location (north of all the other businesses) a little bit quieter. The only thing they are missing is an outdoor area. Came to Mo'Bay Beignet as it was recommended by some family in the area. We were able to grab some parking down the street pretty easily for a Saturday night. The inside is very nice and vibrant with a modern rustic interior. The seating is in the front and you order in the back. My boyfriend and I ordered the 3 piece beignet and it was brought to our table when it was ready. The beignets had a hefty sprinkling of powdered sugar as it should and we were ready to dive in!! Upon taking a few bites, we noticed that the beignet tasted fishy? Mind you, they only make beignets here so we were very caught off-guard. Maybe the oil quality or being old or something, but I don't care for fishy beignets. The texture and everything was great, but the fishiness is hard to overlook for me. Do you really need to know what a beignet is to enjoy it?!? Absolutely not, but FYI it's simply a french term for "fritters". Embedded in Louisiana French-Creole culture and cuisine during the 18th century, the beignet was popularized most notably by the famous Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. The brainchild of Jaclyn Robinson, a photographer by trade, Mo'Bay Beignet Company was born recently in 2019. With a second location in Auburn, Alabama, MBB takes a simple menu item and excels at making it a star. The beignets are made from scratch daily with an added twist of "syrups". These signature syrups include cinnamon and buttercream served on the side for dipping. They also have "seasonal" raspberry or chocolate syrups. Tonight's special syrup was coconut. Located in historical downtown Mobile right on the corner of Dauphin and South Hamilton St, parking can be a bit of a challenge depending on time and day of the week. What appears to be a converted warehouse with high ceilings and perhaps to match the pounds of confectioner's sugar they use, MBB is painted bright white everywhere. With a simple contemporary style and cute phrases written on the walls, there's even a special sink available for patrons to wash their hands. Unfortunately tonight, the sink was out of order. Upon entering, you walk past the dining area with ample tables and chairs to the back where you que up to place your order. After ordering you may find a seat and someone will bring you your beignets. Their menu is simple. Beignets and coffee. If you're looking for anything more, move on. You can get an order of 3 beignets or a "family pack" of 12. We ordered 2 small orders with no syrups. We only waited about 10 minutes or so before my name was called by the young lady looking for me. If you've ever eaten beignets this way, you'll agree that there's nothing you can do to avoid a mess. If the lower half of your face doesn't look like a bad clown makeup job by the time you have taken a couple of bites, then you are not enjoying yourself. Half the fun of eating beignets this way is making a mess. Hence the readily available sink. The other half is appreciating these wonderful square morsels of delectable goodness that were fried to a perfect golden brown and sprinkled generously with confectioner's sugar. It has been a long time since I enjoyed a good beignet. These were as good as I remember them from Cafe Du Monde or Coffee Call in Baton Rouge. These might have been a little "thicker" than Cafe Du Monde's which are a little lighter and "airier" inside. But the taste of the warm doughy inside coated in confectioner's sugar made raising my a1c a few points worth it! You can't have a beignet without a good Cafe au Lait (French for coffee with milk) and theirs is a blend of chicory with French roasted Guatemalan. They even offer it over ice as a cold brew. Stopped in after the Nutcracker. Waited about 10 minutes for the beignets. After eating them, decided to buy one of their gift baskets that was in display. Asked questions about what my option choices would be (type of flavoring syrup). Person at the register ring me up and I paid. Then they said they would call their manager to find out what DAY it would be ready. Nowhere at the display did it say that you needed to order in advance, nor did the employee say anything about it. It looked like a very simple to assemble gift, so I assumed they would either have some premade or could quickly put the prepackaged items into the basket and wrap it. It didn't have fancy bows, etc. I said wait, I didn't know it would take days. I don't live in Mobile. She called the manager (or someone), who then said it would need to be picked up in the West Mobile location - (what?)! Had her cancel and refund me.
