Dim lighting, cool refreshing AC, and their signature drinks. The service there is great. Friendly staff that will answer questions about it their drinks before you make a decision. I did find their coffee more acidic, that is very much dependent on the beans that they serve. No shade being said when I say that. I would ask them when you get there if you get an upset tummy about their beans and the acidity of it. Go check this place out.

Found them easily in the old downtown area, and street parking was a cinch at 9:00a. Loved, loved, loved the beignets! They were light in batter thickness, well-powdered by the staff, and the raspberry sauce was sooooooo good. The front of the establishment doesn't stand out overly much, so we almost walked right by it. When you enter the building you walk straight back (through the entry that says this way to beignets!) and can order at the counter. The beignets were made fresh to order and covered in a mountain of powdered sugar. The latte was smooth and not too sweet. We got one order of 8 count mini beignets and two 16oz iced beignet lattes for $20.

Unfortunately the cinnamon roll was not great. It was hard as a rock. They didn't even warm it up the frosting that went with the cinnamon roll was fairly good but couldn't get over eating a rock.

Haven't been in for a while, but was shocked by the change in atmosphere this morning: Sunday, November 16. Service behind the counter was abrupt as if they were doing me a favor taking my order. Almost bordered on rude. After spending 15 minutes trying to connect to Wi-Fi, I finally asked and was told it had been out for a few days. Great! Put a sign up that says so and stop wasting people's time. Never going back. There are other coffee shops.

For instance, advised that my daughter was shy when the kid hesitated to order one day, the barista brightened up even more and put the girl at ease. Whether their coffee is good or not is completely subjective. I think it's good overall, but it might not be my first choice in town. But it's made with care, and as mentioned, roasted in house. Its popularity speaks to its quality. They also have a very good selection of pastries and other goodies to accompany your coffee, including a Mobile institution--cheesecake from a local company called Cotton Blues. The only gripe I have about Carpe Diem is their seating setup. There simply isn't enough of it. That said, I don't know how they could use the space more efficiently, since the cafe is small as it is. I prefer more private seating, which in other coffee houses I've been to has been accomplished with the judicious use of plants or high-backed chairs. The biggest component of the crowded seating is due to students from Springhill College across the street. Today, for instance, my husband and I were unable to find any seating at all. Even on the days when we can find seating, being entirely surrounded by people working quietly on their laptops feels awkward and lends a library-like feel to the atmosphere. It feels rude to have a conversation at a regular level. I feel like I'm intruding. I don't know how a coffee shop should handle this conundrum, as it's really not good business practice to limit customers' time while there, or to turn away clientele, even in an attempt to please all of their customers. There is already a back room which seems to be an unofficial space dedicated to students, but the overflow still takes up much of the cafe. That said, I enjoy Carpe Diem and going there is a nice little treat. I would definitely recommend it.

So that said, as this was our first visit, we stopped in for an espresso. The baristas were very friendly and welcoming and even informed us that their usual espresso shot was a double shot and asked if that was ok for us. Which was great because that would have been too much for us today and we were able to split the shot between us. The espresso was delicious with a delicate flavor of butter and dark chocolate. It had a slight bitterness to it, but not an over roasted or burned taste. The flavor changed as the shot cooled and was actually sweeter once cooled to room temperature which was surprising. Overall a great tasting espresso experience! We will definitely go back whenever we are in town and I look forward to trying their cinnamon rolls next stop in!
