During a busy weekend in Baton Rouge, I stopped in to Ruby Slipper Cafe for breakfast. The shimrp omelet was a good choice- its probably more a scramble than an omelet, but tasted good whatever you want to call it. It came with stone ground grits and a very fluffy biscuit & honey butter. If you go - definitely get the biscuit! I had a Brandy Milk Punch to go along w breakfast and it was so delicious and milky smooth. Expect a long wait -but there is an online waiting list. By the time I got there, it looked like there would still be a wait so I took a seat at the bar - always a good option for a single seat. This wasn't it to keep it simple. The service was amazing shout-out to our waitress, Samantha. She was very attentive and offered me her favorite meal when I asked at the end of our visit. She also offered to hand-make my iced coffee so it comes out right. And one more big shout out to Samantha because she noticed my friend barely ate her food and told her she didn't have to pay for it and even offered a FREE MEAL. The hostess and the server were also amazing and nice. The shrimp and grits were not it. My friend ordered them expecting tradition shrimp and grits, but it was an oil based instead of the tradition cream. She seem to not enjoy them the entire time and when I finally tried, it wasn't great. The roux of the gravy tasted like gumbo. That is good in a gumbo not shrimp and grits. They also gave with barely 5 shrimps. In the picture below, you can also see the separation of the gravy which is a no. The sweet heat chicken and french toast bites were also not it. They have a lot of potential but mines was lacking. The French toast appeared cold and hard... and they were definitely hard. I had to pick through the soft and hard pieces. The chicken also wasn't great. Chicken breast gets very dry if overcooked/cooked incorrectly. This was definitely that. One of my chicken breast was edible and decent in taste but the other one taste like it was warmed up and plated. It was also very hard half way through. On the other hand, the sweet heat sauce over the dish was delicious. The iced coffee was iced coffee- nothing to complain about. The biscuits was also good. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day - especially on weekends, so first of all, I am grateful that Ruby Slipper Cafe opens at a normal breakfast time (as opposed to a brunch start time of 10am or 11am)! My husband had previously been to a Ruby Slipper in another state and told me I would enjoy it - he wasn't wrong! I'm already looking forward to going back to try more of their tasty sounding menu items. For a Sunday morning at 9am, the place didn't seem too crowded, but I went ahead and joined the waitlist via while on our way. I gave my name to the host when we arrived and we were promptly seated at our requested outside table (because it was a glorious, unusually cool morning). Our waiter (who was amazing, but I can't remember his name at the moment) came out to greet us promptly and took our drink orders. My husband was very excited that they served French Truck Coffee and ordered the NOLA Iced Coffee (which tastes just like melted coffee ice cream). After we ordered (Peacemaker for the hubs and a Breakfast sandwich on a biscuit for me), our food arrived very quickly! We both inhaled our dishes, barely sharing anything with the other (which we normally do). I definitely plan to go back and possibly come even hungrier so that I have room to enjoy some of their breakfast appetizers (which IMHO should be a thing at more restaurants). During the government shutdown, there are not very many places, in this area, jumping at the chance to help fellow citizens that are working without getting paid. It's refreshing to know that businesses in our community are willing to help others in their time of need. I am going to continue to dine here long after the shutdown is over. read more

As one of Louisiana's most well known chains, the Ruby Slipper magic that made it popular in New Orleans seems to be doing the same in Baton Rouge. Long waits and big crowds appear at this BR location on the daily and are especially out in full force during the weekends. I don't think I've ever eaten here without waiting a good amount of time. They've done a good job of looking the part, with clean modern vibes and a lot of New Orleans inspired decor. There is plenty of outdoor seating and parking; even if the demand would suggest otherwise. It's a place that works well for families and is not a place for peaceful dining experience. It's got flair and energy from the patrons to the large staff of servers running all around the place. The main draw for this place is a result of two of my favorite things: brunch and booze. They have a lot of it and serve it all day, every day. Their menu features a whole gamut of brunchy items ranging from their infamous benedicts to french toasts / pancakes and random options like migas, grilled fish, or the "Costa Rican." They tout themselves as purveyors of fresh, seasonal, and local products whenever possible. On the cocktail front, they run about $10 or so and run a bit on the sweet side. The big easy mimosas are usually my choice, but the ruby slipper is their signature cocktail with orange juice and pomegranate. Folks tend to love their bloody mary's but I could certainly live without it. Most of the benedicts are the options to get, with my preferred choices being the eggs cochon and/or chicken st. charles. WIth the "trifecta" option, one can get both the aforementioned along with the shrimp boogaloo benedict for a cool $20. I am so-so on the pancakes, but I am impressed with their french toast, especially the one with bananas foster. Anything with grits is fine, but is not something I'd bother waiting in line for. With a big name, comes big prices. The benedicts are in the $15 range for two, but with little else. Everything else (potatoes, sausage, toast, etc.) are considered extras with sides. They've managed to introduce an omelets section of the menu, where most things are in the respectable $10-12 range but the sides still add up. With a cocktail, entree, and a small app to share, I've never managed to leave here without putting in $50 individually (#1). The service is also a bit aloof at times, which is understandable given how crazy the crowds can be. Mileage varies greatly here, which has been evident given the up-and-down service I've experienced in my last few visits. While I could probably name a few other brunch establishments in BR that are usually a better fit, I know Ruby Slipper carries around the weight of its brand and the offerings of unique specialty brunch items not easily found elsewhere. The sweet heat chicken over French toast bites was AMAZING!!! The perfect balance with sweet and heat get extra sauce on the side I promise you will not regret it! The server stopped coming by our table to give us updates on the food and management never came and touched the table. When the food did arrive everything had been sitting in the serving window under heat lamps overcooking everything. We couldn't finish eating because it was inedible. For starters we started off with seasonal beignets you can get regular or chocolate we opted for regular. They were a little over done but very doughy in the middle but a light sprinkle of powdered sugar. It was a day I had to fast prior to a blood test we visited this restaurant. Need I say how ready I was to eat breakfast and so Ruby was a "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe," choice. Beautiful Husband ordered the Shrimp and Grits and I got Flounder and Fried Grits. The best part of the visit was the Service and Ambiance and our beautiful server. She was just so nice and attentive and gave me the number of her stylist when asked. Food, oh my goodness wasn't good but the presentation was great. The Shrimp and Grits was full of oil!!! For God sakes why??? The Flounder was perfect but the Fried Grits was more like dried grainy overcooked cornbread. It was served on a bed of sautéed Spinach with a few Cherry Tomatoes thrown in. Also included was shrimp on a skewer. THEY USED FROZEN SHRIMP that taste as if they had been cleaned with bleach. Louisiana is a seafood state so there is no reason to not to use FRESH SEAFOOD especially for the price restaurants charges. Can you imagine how it feels after fasting and now able to eat to be served poorly cooked food?! The horror. Would we eat there again? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Bartender was not communicative nor serving us what we ordered .Food was not good at all, it sat on the kitchen window for 30 minutes, biscuits were hard as a rock, the fried chicken was cold. All refrigerated items were on the floor at room temperature. Sanitization at this place was not exactly what the health department would consider an "A" account.
