Shrimp Grits
Raegan D.

The shrimp and grits is so good that I came back two days in a row to get some more. The staff is so kind and the food is just amazing. This is the best breakfast you can find in Baton Rouge, hands down.

Oh grits was the other item. Lol see my review.

Okay this is where a business strategy makes this a win tips it over from 4 to 5 for me. People the place is called Simple Joe. And they smashed that ethos and that promise out of the ball park. My dining companion raved about this place and then shamed me for having not visited since I live relatively nearby. So we met on a Saturday for a late "breaky". I had one of the combos (pancakes, eggs, bacon and something else) and he had shrimp and grits. Eggs were perfect, meat perfect, pancakes were decent though I have definitely had better, and well I can't even recall the other item so you can guess. I was thrilled to learn I got to pick my own coffee mug and that there were seemingly unlimited refills. It reminded me of eating breakfast at my grandma's on a Saturday morning. Folks would pass through to check in on her and each time she had a pot of grits or oatmeal waiting which she would reheat. Some buttered toast and bacon. And then would make their eggs to order and keep the Folgers on repeat. Simple. But lovely. Full of care. Last two things. Companion normally orders omelettes but got shrimp and grits. They were absolutely chomping down and slowed to a hault half way through and said they thought there were red peppers in there. I couldn't see them. But yeah. Also I did at one point ask where the bathroom was at and they directed me to it. But I stopped myself before I ever got there because I felt like I walked into the kitchen!?!?! So who knows where that bathroom is. Lol I lied. Other random things. Loved the art work on the wall. Love the pace and diversity of other patrons partaking. Enjoyed every worker I interacted with. Parking wasn't horrible. Prices were decent in this era of everything is more expensive than it was 10 years ago. Will go again.

Definitely will be back. I enjoyed the food as I dined alone for brunch and watched my favorite show. Service was good, can't ask for too much. It's a simple set up. Ambiance and inside decor was really cozy. Very cute.

One of my favorite breakfast places in BR! Shrimp omelette with grits and bacon. My go to when I'm hungry.

Glad we found this place! It's very open and welcoming. You walk up and grab a menu then order at the counter. Plenty of seating area. I had the #6 and my husband had the Salmon Bagel. Service was great, the food was done in a timely manner. I love that you can serve yourself water and coffee. Definitely recommend this place when in Baton Rouge!

Simple Joe is a perfect name. So simple yet yummy. Everything feels freshly made, the grits were my favorite. Service was fast considering they were busy. Nice ambiance, very upbeat.

A smallish locally owned restaurant in mid city BR. This local gem was recommended by a friend. It's a sit down restaurant where you order at the counter and find a place (indoor or outdoor) to sit. Though not a real "sit down service" place, service was still pretty good. Workers were helpful and friendly. Food was very tasty and we received it relatively quickly. Overall a good place with a funky and somewhat eclectic vibe. I think it has the potential to earn a spot in my rotation.

Excellent Coffee! We had the big Joe Breakfast Sandwich and French Toast. Both were perfect. Comfortable Old Style Coffee House atmosphere with advertisements on the table and art on the walls. We will be back.

We've never had anything besides breakfast because their grits are THE BEST. Great diner-style breakfast with endless self-serve coffee.

We often feel judged or ostracized because in all respects, our child's gifted or seemingly normal, but then the behavior issues come out. With Ashley, she was patient as we worked through his food choices which if you have a child with autism, you completely understand the limitations. This was our first time there as a family and now he has a new place. He's familiar with and if you know what it went that is you know. Thank you Ashley for a stellar experience, Paige.

We were able to be seated as walk-ins on Presidents Day morning, although the place was absolutely packed. The service here was warm and the food came out moderately quick. This place feels like one of those higher end casual spots, definitely a step above IHOP, but not quite First Watch. We ordered a bunch of things so we'll break it down one by one: Pancakes with bacon - a bit of a letdown. Pancakes had no real flavor and the bacon was good, not great. Beignets - pretty good. Better than some we've had for sure, a nice sweet and doughy treat. French toast bites - very delicious. Came with a nice, sweet dipping sauce that really brought it home. Fried catfish & grits - hit and a miss. The catfish was delicious and lightly battered, the grits were very heavy and buttery which didn't go well with the catfish. It does also come with a biscuit that was light and buttery. Creamy vanilla iced coffee - good. Nothing too special, definitely better than a chain like Starbucks, that's for sure. It had a nice sweetness to it. Altogether, Ruby Slipper is a decent breakfast spot. Nothing we ate really hit it out of the park, but we were satisfied with our meal. It really seems like a local favorite spot and one that feels convenient to hit coming and going from NOLA. If you're looking for quick, convenient, and moderately cheap, this is the spot you're searching for.

The food prices were very affordable too, which is a huge plus in this economy. The space was cozy and charming, almost like dining inside an antique shop. Overall, a great experience, and I can't wait to come back and try more items on the menu.

A few weeks ago I was in town for a hockey game and in need of some refreshments pre-game. This was the perfect spot. It was a little rainy so a large portion of the place was unusable. In better weather the courtyard would've been a nice place to sit. There are many non courtyard tables and that's where we found ourselves. Calling yourself a beer garden and not having an extensive list would be foolish. Foolish they aren't here. Their list is extensive. So extensive and frequently changing that it's found via QR code on the table. The food menu is typical bar fare but taste anything but typical.
