My friend works here. She's the one who got me all the way into the city to get my hair did. Walking into this place is like magic. it smells beautiful. there are healing crystals everywhere and other fun trinkets like jewelry and sprays, tarot cards.... It is just a serene oasis in this cozy place. Theresa did my hair and oh my lord the experience was out of this world. Like I was on the moon, getting pampered. Needless to say, my hair turned out better than ever. I bought the recommended shampoo, angel by Kevin Murphy. I'm never going back to anything else. my hair is healthier than its been in a long time (I've done a lot of damage to my mop). Since then, I've visited a couple more times just to buy gifts for friends. The crystals come in cute little burlap pouches. After a recent consultation, she provided excellent product recommendations and long-term tips on how to take care of my skin's health. After a few weeks of using various Arcona products (based on Jen's recommended, custom skin care regimen) and staying hydrated, my skin looks and feels the healthiest ever. I truly appreciate her patience with listening to my initial skin 'issues' diatribe, as well as her honesty and genuine concern. We stayed in the hotel portion of the Ruby Room on our last visit to Chicago... and it's something I recommend to anyone who likes peace and quiet. There was a lot of "to do" about the rules of the hotel. Once I was in our room though, I understood. It's not a place for kids, undoubtedly. RR in general pushes for a more tranquil setting, and they certainly achieved it. Our bed was like a marshmallow (both in color and texture!). The bathroom was gorgeous and stocked with Aveeno products. There were extremely comfortable chairs all over the place, a little two-chair cafe setup and one chaise longue... I feel sleepy just talking about it. I've stayed in a few places in Chicago. When I come back I'll definitely come back to the Ruby Room. It was a great experience and probably the most relaxing hotel experience I've ever had. read more

I love this place. I could spend an hour looking at all the cool stuff. It is a great place to buy gifts and quirky items for yourself too. I had done the crystal healing there one time and it was very relaxing. I brought my mom (from NY) there for the crystal healing as well. I often buy different crystals there for different ailments or to get certain superpowers. I don't know if they really work, but it can't hurt, right? They have expanded so much recently, that now there are three different sections: the yoga and incense section, the cosmetics section, the books and services section. I have to visit every section when I go. In conclusion, even if you don't believe in all that "mumbo-jumbo", it is still a great store. read more

Caveat- my only experience with Ruby Room was my recent facial with Jen, so I cannot speak to their other services or service providers but ... WOW. My facial was awesome. Relaxing, yet effective- my skin went from dull and dry to positively glowing in 60 minutes. Jen made my feel instantly comfortable, fully explained each step of what she was going to do ahead of time, and provided a soothing neck, shoulder, arm and scalp massage while the enzymes did their magic. No, it isn't cheap- but it was definitely worth it. I already made my next appointment. Jen books up pretty fast- but if you call and plan ahead, you'll be glad you did! read more

I'm not sure what the one star people expect, but this place is AWESOME. I went there yesterday and was totally blown away by it. The staff was amazing...Wendy was welcoming and made the whole "process" one that wasn't awkward and afterward I felt like a million bucks. I had never had a colonic done before, but I will be going back next week. I totally trusted her and she was funny, yet professional. I tried a reading with Melanie. I have had a few other readings in the past, but this woman was right on the mark. She nailed it and I didn't give her any info. She knew me better than some of my closest friends. And to top it off, she suggested a book to help me on my journey, which I can't put down. It's not just a reading, it's therapy. I feel amazing today, better than I have felt in a LONG time. If you are looking for an amazing massage experience, I highly recommend Gladys at the Ruby Room. I have been here several different times over the last couple of years and am truly never disappointed. This woman must have hands of magic, let me tell you! I've had massages at several different places (both local and on vacations) and they just simply never compare. The massage is always incredibly relaxing and Gladys always seems to get the pressure just-right, but the long-term benefits, both physically and mentally, far outlast just the massage itself. The overall experience at the Ruby Room is also always a treat. The "waiting room" once you get back to the spa area is relaxing, and they usually let you relax there a little while after your service if you need to. I recommend getting there just a few minutes early so you can unwind with a mug of the Aveda tea before they take you back to your massage. I haven't tried the intuitive services but those are next on my list! read more

Someone bought me a gift certificate so that I could get a massage. I really had no idea what I was getting into as I had never even walked by this place and taken notice. At first I thought I might have been in the wrong building because they apparently occupy two storefronts right next to each other, although the right side seems to be under construction right now. I was surrounded by haircare products and what looked like a messy upscale salon. I think it was just the time of day: Thursday afternoon at 2:30. The young woman at the front led me back to the "spa" area where I was suddenly thrust into a quiter, darker lounge area to fill out some information forms and relax before the main event. The woman who would do my massage, Sarah, came in, introduced herself and offered me some water or tea. I went with the tea, some sweet herbal blend, while she sat down with me to asses any areas of my body she should work more on, due to past work and body movement history. Pretty quickly she took me back into the room. The mood was incredibly relaxing. Sometimes the environment can be a bit too clinical, but it seemed like everything from the dim lighting, the soothing sounds and music playing, and the pleasant employee made me feel right at home. Another bonus was that the massage table was heated, and I could have her adjust it. It was set perfectly for me though. As far as this person's massage skills, Sarah was very good. At first she relaxed me by covering me in sheets and lightly brushing at the body, and then when she eventually started on the back it was at first gentle. I could tell she was just feeling out where the sore spots were that would need the most attention. Finally, she went to town on my shoulders and upper back, where the most tension seemed to be, spending about 15 minutes on each side. This is the point where the masseuse gets very "deep tissue" and the pressure can be a bit painful, but as I got used to it, I could literally feel my muscles loosening up as knots were coming undone. I couldn't believe how tense I was, but I'm glad I got someone who knew how to relieve it. When it was all over, of course I wished it weren't. But at $100 per 60-minutes, I ended up splitting the cost with the gift certificate I received, 50-50. It is a bit pricey and I don't know if I'll be able to do this more than once a year. There have to be comparable massages done for less elsewhere, but the trick to finding them is sometimes ellusive. All in all though, my massage experience was wonderful. The atmosphere is interesting and the staff seem to know what they're doing. If you have the cash and don't mind spending it, this place is worth checking out. read more

A fun place to browse. It's a beautiful space, and definitely has a peaceful feeling. While the sales people can be pushy, they will generally leave you alone if you don't encourage it. Has a lot of really great product lines. Haircuts, while expensive (as is pretty much everything else in the store), are very good. They are also very genuine with their new-age-y-ness, so if you find that a little hokey, be prepared to roll your eyes a few times. Even so, it's still worth dropping in on occasion. And if you are into new age stuff, this is definitely the place for you. That is, assuming you have deep pockets. read more

This place is fantastic. It is beautiful inside and the people are kind. The products they carry in their shops are wonderful as well. Megan did an arcona facial and it was sooo relaxing. She is so sweet and talented (she throws in a little massage -- very well-executed.) I highly reccommend her. Also Laryl did a mini-blend session with an aura-reading using the aura reading machine. I drop into RR when I visit Wicker Park, and pick up some incense or Arcona products. I can't afford this place, normally, but I would visit for a facial or a haircut. I see the reviews are hit and miss around the yoga studio--I wouldn't know about that. I have also seen the whole retail therapy thing that they have going in there. It is fair to say that myself and the other poor people who used to live in the hood could not afford this on a regular basis. I got a facial on my birthday, and it was the best facial I've ever had. I took advantage of a Spa Week special (also highlighted in TimeOut Chicago) to try acupuncture for the first time at Ruby Room. The desk staff was very friendly, and Natalia, the acupuncturist, was outgoing and professional. After choosing a card for the focus of the session and having a matching scent sprayed around, I was ready to get started. Natalia took time to explain the history of acupuncture and find out what results I was hoping for before beginning with the needles. Focusing on stress reduction, motivation, and weight loss, I had needles in my ear, arms, legs, and stomach. They really weren't painful, but I could tell they were definitely doing something. I felt very relaxed after lying in the dim room with soothing music playing for half an hour, and there are no marks from the needles at all. After the treatment, we talked about what was recommended going forward, and I plan on returning weekly for a month to follow through on Natalia's recommendations. We also discussed some Chinese herbal supplements that may help, and I'll be looking in to them. Natalia was very practical, funny, and genuinely caring, and I look forward to seeing her again. The atmosphere of the Ruby Room spa area is very calming and homey, with old-fashioned quilts on the treatment tables and couch in the reception area. There are also deals for buying packages that make it more affordable, which is a bonus for such great service. read more

I've been looking for a good massage place in my new neighborhood. This one turned out to be great! I awoke with sciatica pain that made walking difficult. I couldn't take it anymore and called hoping they'd have availability. I got in at 11am for an hour appointment. I thought I'd had good massages before, but no. This was a truly good experience; it was exactly what a massage should be. I was asked specific questions about what I'd like to work on or skip. Not only was my massage relaxing (always nice) but it was truly helpful in fixing my pain issues. At $122 with massage, tip, and a tiger balm purchase I thought that was a bargain compared to others! I had a FANTASTIC massage with Amanda last week. Holiday traveling and winter weather were dragging me down, but I felt tremendous afterwards. She had me choose a card from a deck which determined which flower/gem essence spray she would use (gratitude. yes.) She also gave me a bag of mineral salts to use in a bath later on (which I did), and just kept the bliss on going. I work as a server, and the restaurant business has been hit hard by the recession. In the past year, I have quit smoking, getting my nails done, tanning, and I even started going out to bars less just to save some money to afford rent in Chicago. One thing I will not cut from my budget is getting my hair done at Ruby Room. I went from dark brown to blonde at another salon, and was happy with the color, but noticed my hair was starting to get super dry at the ends. I started going to Julia at Ruby Room for color instead, and figured out I CAN be blonde and have long hair. I go in every six weeks or so, and Julia manages to get me in and out in an hour or less, with my hair looking shiny and healthy. She even got me to nix my drug store product addiction, so now I'm a B&B girl. I wish I knew the other girl's names, too, because everyone at RR is super nice. LOVE the phone call to confirm the appt., because I would forget every time otherwise. Another fun thing about this salon is the store in the front. Cool jewelry, affordable bags, yummy chocolate. I have been going to RR for over a year now. I have had massages and waxes and the estheticians/therapists are always excellent. Toni is who cuts and styles my hair and she has always been friendly and professional. I always get compliments on my hair after she cuts and colors it. Most recently, she was able to cut the too-long hair extensions I had put in somewhere else into a style that was beautiful and manageable. She takes the time to write down all of the products that she used and gives me directions on how to use them properly... I would be lost with out that extra effort that she puts in! The front desk is ALWAYS kind and friendly as well. They remind me every time about how many points I have to use, instead of just letting them expire. I started going to RR because it was close to my home, but I will continue to come here even if I move away! read more

My husband went for a massage and it was all about up selling him...he didn't even enjoy the massage because the therapist was so focused on getting him to buy products or some crazy rock addition (which by the way did nothing). It went on when he was paying for the services AND the woman kept telling him he needed to buy products like bath salts. She pushed in front of other customers and it was uncomfortable. He explained that he has young children so soaking in a bath is not an option. Long story short, for the money I would suggest the Peninsula Hotel for a good massage. Pushing products defeats the purpose of a relaxing time at a massage. I had heard good things, but he won't be back and I will go back to the Peninsula. read more

I scheduled an appointment with Paul after learning about Arcona products from a friend. I didn't expect a facial experience to be any different than what I had received in the past from other spas, but it WAS! Not only was the staff exceptionally friendly and attentive, the facial treatment I got from Paul was wonderfully relaxing. Spa Space is in the lobby of my building, and although I love it and have been quite loyal, Paul at the Ruby Room now has another loyal customer. A truly great spa experience, but I have to say that I was disappointed when I called Ruby Room and they were plum out of massage appointments for the Groupon usage. The woman on the phone could not have been nicer though and went through a list of services I could try and I was extremely happy with the selections I made - an energy healing and the cold stone headache treatment. Ruby Room is a beautiful spa and the relaxed atmopshere boasts some very friendly staff. I'm not giving my experience here the full 5 stars solely because of things that happened before my treatments. I was escorted to the second floor and told to sit in a chair but not offered any water or tea. I would have gotten it myself but there weren't any cups. Instead of a professionally friendly atmosphere I expected I was just kind of left waiting for my service to start. Luckily the experience improved from there out. The energy healing was amazing (I would not do the service justice by attempting to explain it here but it was similar to Reiki and was much more emotional than I'd anticipated) and I was relaxed and utterly calm for my cold stone headache massage. I would highly recommend the second treatment for anyone that suffers from migraines. Cold stones, light massaging of the face as well as hand and foot massages were invigorating. Overall a very positive experience and I will definitely go back to give some more of their services a try. I would have just opted for the *safe* massage but now I will try expanding my horizons with some more healing or intuitive services! read more

After relocating to Wicker Park last month, I found myself in need of a new stylist. Every girl knows, a good cut can make or break you. I knew a couple of friends that had visited The Ruby Room for haircuts and were pleased with the results so I decided to try it out as well. I called on a Friday and got in with a same day appointment. This made me very happy. I am normally not a last minute appointment maker, but the need was there. I was given the choice of a jr. or sr. stylist. For the $30 price difference, I chose the jr. stylist. The receptionist was very accomodating on the phone. I arrived for my appointment and the receptionist was equally accomodating in person. I was honestly treated like I had been their top client for 10 years. I was taken back to the salon area and Toni was ready for me. Toni was very warm and friendly and from what I learned, a recent addition to the Ruby Room staff. Toni sat down with me, got to know me and really listened to what I wanted. Once my experience was complete, I had just the haircut I wanted. And, to top it off, the blow out was AHHHMAAAZING! I hardly ever leave a stylist and like my hair. Not sure why that's the case, it just is. I told Toni had I known it was going to look that good, I would have come in the next day so she could have done her magic for my birthday party. My only hesitation in writing this review is the fear of not getting in to see my beloved new stylist. :) read more

I used my Groupon coupon for hair service with Laura. I love that she works on Sundays. My hair turned out really nice, but without a coupon it's more money than I want to spend getting my hair did. They have a full line of Aveda and Bumble and Bumble products to select from. I went upstairs to their gift shop and they have a bunch of great books and neat stuff to check out. I bought a couple of gifts for my friends for the Holidays. I could have stayed longer but I needed to get out of there before I spent anymore money. Went here for hair and makeup for my sister's wedding....WOW. Although I have never in the past had an extraordinary "event" hair and makeup experience, this place tipped the scales. Totally amazing. The stylists are awesome and I was so impressed with the makeup. I was so disappointed that I wasnt able to use my groupon for a massage because the appointments were all booked through the expiration of the groupon. This tells me that they must be great and I should have made my appointments right away. My wax was great, if that can even be said about a brazillian. Karma did an excellent job of keeping me entertained with her humor and reassuring comments that I was doing great. It seemed to go by fairly fast. She used a hard wax which I had never experienced before. There are no strips involved and the hair seemed to come out easier. Next I had a scalp massage. This is never something I would have gotten without a groupon because It's $75.00 (I use groupons because I am cheap)! It wasnt really what I was expecting. The massage part is kind of short and it was done sitting up in a chair. I was expecting it to be an extension of when I'm getting a body massage and they throw in a little head massage. Kristina used very awesomely smelling oils and a nice conditioning treatment on my hair. She was very cool and nice to talk to. my hair looked and felt great afterwards. If you are not into alternative healing and stuff I consider a little "out there" this might not be the place for you. I cant say that I am completely sold on the whole chakra balancing thing and this salon will incorporate that into your service. Before my scalp massage I had to pick a card which told me which chakra I was supposed to work on and then sprayed with balancing mist and given an affirmation to read. I came here after reading reviews and must say I was impressed. My irrigation lady really made me relax, which helped the process a lot. I mean how comfortable can you be with something up your bum. She also read my cards before heading into the room. I did not like that they suckered (read: pressured) me into purchasing stuff on my way out which to this day doesn't work as they told me it was. This is a review for the healing services. The staff is warm and friendly. I was greeted right away. I usually come to Ruby Room once every few months for sage, incense, or crystals. While upstairs I was asked if I wanted an energy healing. I agreed to a 30 min session with Ali. Ali is amazing. She puts you right at ease. After my session I bought 2 crystals she recommended. I am definitely going back to her again. Ruby Room's space is awesome. Everything in split up into 3 levels. I never feel crowded nor forced into buying anything. They have a wide range of books, incense, crystals, sage, candles, bath salts etc to choose from. 4 stars instead of 5 simply b/c I have not used the spa services before. Love love love Ruby Room! I fixed an appointment for partial highlights n a hair cut. Kristina was the one who worked with me. She ws very friendly n made me feel very comfortable n ws really helpful in guidin' me through the process of choosin' the right color and hairstyle. N yes, i ws suggested abt 5-6 products out'a which i thought one might help me keep my hair smooth n so I bought it. (for $21) The only drawback (for which I don' gv it a full 5 star rating) is that its expensive. The groupon was for $50 (valued at $125) and further paid a difference of abt $50. The haircut n color, I've fallen in luv with but, I hope I don' feel guilty for spendin' such money to go bk there in the future. read more

I've been going to The Ruby Room on and off for a few years now. Mostly on when I can afford it! I was in the mood to go back to my blonde roots and emailed about upcoming specials. That day I made my appointment as I was given 25$ off and had the pleasure of receiving my partial and cut via Laura. Although I used to go to Toni either one is well qualified. They have changed their color from Aveda to a new product which made me a little wary at first but after my blow out I am more than satisfied. The color is bright and looks natural (and I like it WAY better than aveda options believe me I've had every blonde they offer!) Laura was great, I stayed and bought some makeup which was really fun and the receptionist slash cosmetologist on duty wasn't pushy at all. The only reason I am giving the Ruby Room four stars instead of five is because it can be pretty difficult to schedule an appointment there without more than two weeks notice, but beyond that, I absolutely loved my experience there. I had a Groupon for services up to $125 which was perfect as I was going to Vegas the next week and it wanted to not have to worry about anything. Karma was absolutely amazing. It was my first time adventuring into waxing land, and she was very good with explaining what she was doing, and why, and taking my mind off everything, especially since I was pretty burnt from tanning. I would highly recommend booking any type of appointment with Karma! I will definitely be back when I have a little extra income and most definitely before I go on my next big trip. Ruby Room is a little different but I really loved it. I went there with my mom on her birthday last year and we got massages and a couple other things done. The relaxing music is great and their energy healing and zen atmosphere are really interesting and relaxing. Everyone is so friendly and they have an awesome tea too which I drank a lot of. The massages were great but the coolest thing was that my mom had her angel cards read- the reader knew the strangest things like the ages of our cat and dog and other things in her life they shouldn't have known. I am not normally into that stuff but thought it was really cool. I would go back to try their other services if it were not so far from where I live. read more

After hearing great things about this place I finally got to experience it first hand. It's gorgeous inside, they have fabulous product lines, the decor was so relaxing and it had such great energy. It was truly a healing experience...and I can't wait to try a service here. So yes, I never can seem to get an appointment here. I decided to shop around and I found tons of things to buy, they have a great line of their own aromatherapy sprays bcreative, bgrounded etc. I loved them! They have a custom candle that I had to have it smelt to amazing. I purchased some healing crystals & gems that reflect the different chakras. I had a reading done by Ryan and I was blown away, I felt like he new everything about me, it was crazy and that was in only 10 minutes I should have paid for more time. I have a set appointment with her every Friday. She knows so much about pregnancy and birth and gives the best advice and recommendations on products to ease stress and help you relax. Gladys ROCKS! My other favorite person is Melanie in the healing area of Ruby Room -- she does all of my readings and before her I was not a believer in these type of readings but now I am. She works her magic and really helps me center myself. She's amazing and I highly recommend having a reading with her. I like the Ruby Room since its so different from other salons. Its so nice and low key! Its "Zen" without feeling too hokey! When you first walk in, you a greated by sparkly jewelery and accessories which every girl loves! I got a haircut from Jessica and she did a great job! They also offer make-up touch-up with your haircut but Jessica had her next client waiting and I didn't have anymore plans for the day so I just skipped that part....but good to know if scheduling a cut prior to other appointments! The price is very competitive compaired to any salon in Chicago! They have a TON of alternative healing services offered. I haven't tried any yet but I look forward to when I get the chance! read more

I have curly hair, so once I find a stylist who can cut it properly, I'm loyal to the core. I came to Ruby Room in December 2009 after finding out my regular stylist had moved to Hawaii. I had purchased their Groupon a couple months prior, and thought "may as well try a haircut here - at least it won't be a large investment". I'm SO glad I did. I was lucky to get an appointment with Toni who is WONDERFUL!!! I've always had longer hair, but recently I decided to go short (chin length basically), and of course, she gave me the perfect cut. Then, just when I thought I couldn't love my hair anymore, I went a for a touch-up and mentioned my hair was a little bulky around the sides as it grew out. I am hesitant to write a review for this place....why? Because I don't want everyone else to find out how amazing it is! Call me selfish, but this place is like a secret oasis in the middle of the city. As soon as you walk in you feel a sense of calm and relaxation. I love their massages, facials and they have a beautiful room upstairs. You almost forget you are in Chicago. I definitely recommend all of their services, even the salon. I just had my hair colored and it looks great. She listened to exactly what I want and didn't cut off too much either. Also if you ever need a few nights away they have a hidden set of rooms (just like a hotel) that you can stay at over the weekend. read more
