What a horrifying business. The services are lovely and the atmosphere is terrific. But please know that if you do business here, they run it like a business. The staff has been rude and disappointing, informing me that I did not show up for an appointment and they were going to penalize me even though I did show up for that appointment and spent money on merchandise. I have the records on my credit card statement to prove it. I even tipped the staff member on the credit card. But, at the Ruby Room, they are always right and the customer is always wrong. They refuse to apologize or rectify their mistake. I was told that this issue needs to go through the manager and the brand manager. This makes no sense when I have the records to prove it. I have been a loyal customer of the Ruby Room for years and years spending thousands of dollars. I will no longer *ever* get a service from this business ever again and I will let people know what kind of business they run here. Something always seemed fishy with the management here - staff that I have used for hair appointments, facials, massage, and acupuncture always left abruptly due to the same types of reasons (moving out of state, wanting to be more medical, getting out of the business). I have a feeling that management is horrifying here based on how they have treated me: a loyal customer and former devotee. read more

Kimberly, I appreciate that Ruby Room has hired you to put out fires on Yelp and Citysearch when negative reviews pop up. However when I contacted Ruby Room at the time I might as well have beeen talking to a brick wall. It appears to me, and others that I know who have read these reviews, that you are only concerned with fixing the public image and not the experience at Ruby Room. I have no interest in contacting you a second time, I gave Ruby Room the opportunity to prove me wrong and nothing happened. But now that I have publicly aired my opinion you want to fix this. Ruby Room has a large number of reviews, some of which are very similar to each other, but the many negatives are all striking in how they mention the rude staff/poor customer service. You should look into fixing this aspect. Within less than a week two people have agreed with my review. This should speak volumes to you regarding the experience that people have at Ruby Room. read more

Walking into the Ruby Room is a breath of fresh air. Made an appointment for a much needed and well deserved massage. I normally request a female but decided to go with the flow and I don't remember his name but I left with nothing but fantastic energy. I've heard of some other thingwait to find all of the other hidden gems...secret garden? :) Yes Please! Oh, and I can stay overnight at the Ruby Room Inn this place is full of pleasant surprises. read more

If I could give this place less then one star I would. I booked a room starting on Labor Day for two nights over a month ago and when we arrived no one was there to check us in. We called numerous times and no one answered. We came all the way from Australia just to sit on the side of the road with our bags.... Luckily a woman who works next door come out and said that this inn does this ALL THE TIME! They apparently just leave keys in a random unmarked box next door so we looked and found our bill with no keys! So my credit card has been charged over $500 for nothing but stress. I'm so angry I'm ready to throw a brick through the window just to get a hold of someone! According to the hostel down the street they also overbook all the time and just send people to the hostel instead.... Seriously this place is so screwed up! DO NOT STAY HERE! DO NOT BOOK HERE! read more

The absolute best. Amazing staff, great service. I cannot recommend their massage therapy highly enough.

I had booked a facial for ruby room for today 5/19/15 at 345p & when I showed up at the ruby room, I was told there was no facial apptmt for me. A sorry and I was sent on my way...I am extremely disappointed. I guess there was no manager there, but still. I took time out of my day to come to get a facial, paid for parking & planned my entire day around this. I showed the receptionist at the front the confirmation and I just got a huh, that's weird. Completely unacceptable. I hope that someone appropriately contacts me regarding this issue. I booked via Yelp where it says book an apptmt here. I have three different pictures of my confirmation. read more

I genuinely enjoyed my stay at Ruby Room: it's a little different than your average hotel, at least the average hotel that I've hit when staying in Chicago, and you can tell the place draws healty (pun intended) amounts of juju from the fact that it sits on top of a like-owned spa. In my experience, it was a great launching pad to check out some of the fun boutiques and cool eateries in the area, and the place was mouse quiet at night, at least in my room. And the rooms, such as they are? Spacious, upscale, even a little potentially ornate. One downside was the lack of elevator here. I stayed on the 4th floor, and if you've ever dragged your bags up four flights, that is a special breed of suck. At any rate, that aside, I can't complain. I had a great stay here, for a comparatively reasonable rate, in a fun part of town to boot. Definitely worth considering if you want to park it some place outside the downtown epicenter. read more

Stayed at the Inn, because it was marketed as a unique destination for Rest and rejuvenation. WOW how far from rest and rejuvenation it was. It was not quiet at all, you heard constant creaking and slamming from the room above, super loud heater, along with loud city noises constantly. It is a historic building, with that in mind it looks great, but imagine all the noises of a creepy old house! That's what you get. Also when we went to use the bathroom the toilet had skid marks on it! Gross! So with all the negativity of all that it was far from a restful night. I will say the bed sheets were nice, and good location, but I would never stay here again even if it were free. Such a disappointment read more

I would definitely stay here again. I really, really enjoyed my stay. I stayed on the fourth floor, and I didn't mind having to walk up the stairs (no elevator), in fact it marginally reduced the guilt of all the overeating I did when I was in Chicago. I actually stayed in two rooms, because of availability issues. My first room was the city suite, and it was quite shabby chic, with very high ceilings. The next two nights I stayed in a deluxe suite, which was an unbelievable bargain of $74 a night. It was a large room, with huge windows and a couple of seating areas. There was a steam shower and it WAS INCREDIBLE. Especially given how frigid it was in Chicago. Your first time in a steam shower is quite a disorienting and other worldly experience. The staff was very, very nice and accommodating. In fact, an employee helped me carry my heavy suitcase down the stairs when my hands were full. Two slight complaints: noise traveled prettily easily at the Ruby Room (after reading reviews I strategically decided to stay on the 4th floor so I wouldn't have to worry about listening to others footsteps). On the night I switched rooms, I couldn't get the key before close so they put it in a mailbox on the street. The Ruby Room main door was unlocked and you need a code to get onto your floor, but I don't really know how often they change it. It just seemed a little unsafe. Aside from that, parking was easy to find and the subway was just two or three blocks away. read more

This place is so not as cool as their website. The website makes it look expansive, educational, open, and upscale, however, going to the Ruby Room is a disappointment. I went for Spa Week for the $50 acupuncture special. Having never tried acupuncture before, I thought for $50 it would be an interesting experience. I was disappointed as I was made to fill out like an 8-page extensive and invasive survey about my physical and mental health down to very personal questions that didn't seem would affect my treatment at all- for example, "compared to toothpaste, what is the texture of your bowel movements?" The actual service was brief- only hr instead of the 45 minutes as stated and they only put in 7 needles which I was surprised having expected many more. Needles are thin and did not hurt and technician was nice, however, I did not feel any difference/improvement in my health after the treatment. Also, there was another technician who was not so nice and yes, they tried to sell Chinese herbs to me. Pushy. read more

This review is for the rooming part of the business. I was compelled to write a review when I saw a recent ad for the Ruby Room that said something like "Mom and Dad don't want to stay with you anyways." Unfortunately this ended up being the LAST place we should have booked our parents during their visit. The guest rooms are up four flights of steep stairs and while our parents are mobile, they are older individuals and were unable to hike up the stairs with their luggage. We had to cancel our reservation and lose our deposit when we found this out. We wish we had known this before booking because it would have saved us a lot of money. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR GUESTS ARE FIT AND HEALTHY BEFORE CONSIDERING THIS PLACE. Also, there isnt' a 24-hour number to call to address problems after hours or when the spa is closed. read more

Come on. Who goes into a salon with a 50% off coupon in one hand and a picture of Selma Blair in the other and expects to walk out with that haircut. Let's be rational. Selma Blair probably spends no less than $300 on a haircut. The individual on the other end of those coupons is most likely a newer stylist with not as much experience hoping to gain more clientele. It's not rocket science. If I don't have the money for a Sr. stylist haircut, I am waiting till I have it. I digress. I have gotten pretty much every service they have to offer, and there's a lot, which can be over stimulating. But out of everything they offer, and I love it all, I would have to recommend their yoga, meditation and healing services. Getting your hair done is great, but I'm of the mindset that you should start with the inside and work your way out. If you're feeling a little lost or uninspired, sit down with a healer and gain perspective or center yourself with a meditation class. or D-I-Y and figure out which crystals you can use to help you through life's obstacles. If it didn't work for me, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I wouldn't have learned that life is pretty much just a past experience that someone's projecting onto you. And that's an important thing to know, learning how to let go. read more

I've been salon-hopping for awhile now, so when my sister gave me a gift certificate to Ruby Room, I decided to use it for my hair and see if I'd found a stylist I'll stick to. If I can do a good job of saving up for my haircuts and dye jobs, I will be staying with Rylee at Ruby Room. It's a little pricey for me but I am cheap and it's definitely not steep for the neighborhood. And if one so desired, one could get some spa treatments, get their hair done, and take a yoga class and make a day of it, so that's nice. I'll probably stick to the salon because I am not a baller. The space is beautiful and it was the first time I've been warm rather than freezing while getting my hair done (what is that with the salons?). They are open on Sunday, which was amazingly convenient for me, plus I was the only client so I felt really special. Rylee took her time; my (now very, very short!) haircut was based upon a picture and we went over what would work on my head, with my pre-existing bangs. I love the cut and the color is awesome too. Also, I normally hate being forced to make conversation with strangers, but she was really sweet and easy to talk to. Overall, I actually had an enjoyable time during my salon visit, which is amazing because I usually do this for the results and dread the process. read more

This may be my first ever Yelp review... That's how great my facial was. I'll admit that the before and after were a bit rushed, I was there on a Saturday and the place was busy. Also, the card reading for my scent for the day felt a little superfluous. However, this place gets 5 stars because my face has NEVER felt better. I was struggling with clogged pores, oily skin, and fine lines. It's been 3 days since my facial and I feel like a new person. I just did the regular facial, no diamond brush (maybe some day though). Thanks Ruby Room, I'll be back!! read more

So, I've notice the the RR hasn't been reviewed in awhile. I have been consistently getting my hair cut there by Charles, and he has always done a great job. The space is very cute without being pretensious. I love looking around the shop in front, and never have enough time to, since they are always so prompt! With this confidence, I booked hair and makeup for myself and my seven bridesmaids for my wedding day morning. Last month, I went in for a trim with Charles, and it was like I had stepped into the twilight zone. I expected to chat with him about my upcoming wedding, and the vacation that I had just returned from, since we had spoken in detail about both of these things the last time I had gotten my hair cut. He had no idea who I was. He brought me right over to the sink without a consultation at the mirror first, but I wasn't too shocked by this since we had history, and he knew what type of cut I wanted and what we had discussed last time. At the sink Charles let me know that we wouldn't have time for the deep conditioning treatment I requested, since he was in a rush. Actually, he barely put any conditioner at all in my long hair, and didn't even give me a towel or a smock to wear as I walked over to his chairs. Here I am sitting in the chair with wet hair soaking through my sweater. I should have gotten up and walked out then. As Charles attempted to comb through my tangled hair (no conditioner, remember?) He let me know that we wasn't planning to dry my hair either, since he was pressed for time. He then continued to drop 7 combs, 7! I counted them. He waved some scissors over my head, and cut a few chucks out of the back of my hair, and called it done. My appointment was at 7:00 pm, I was there on time, and my credit card was swiped at 7:19 pm. 19 minutes and not enough time to dry my hair!?! Since there was no manager on duty, and I don't like to cause a scene, I left my business card with the receptionist, and asked her to have a manager call me first thing in the morning. No one called for three days, and finally I called them. When I did speak to a manager, she listened to my entire story, let me know how appalled she was and offered to refund the charge to my credit card. I also let her know that I had thousands of dollars of services booked there for my wedding day, and that I wanted to make sure that she felt she had enough competent staff to serve us, and that Charles would not be present, and not touch the hair of any of my bridesmaids. She whole heartedly agreed. Went through the schedule with me, and removed Charles from the list. Three days later she called to ask if I woud accept a store credit for the $65 charge, insteading of refunding it to my credit card. Whatever. I'm leaving the three stars because I think that Ruby Room is a great establishment, and that I just caught them on the wrong day. I really really hope that they pull it together for my wedding day, and I'll edit this post when they do! **Update** I'm bumping this up to 3 stars because everyone at the Ruby Room, especially Emily, did a great job on my wedding day. The one speed bump we hit was the stylist that really tried to pressure my sister into getting her hair colored on my wedding day. Umm no? At least I was their with big Bridezilla "I don't think so!!" read more

I've had my ups and downs with Ruby Room over the past few years - primarily with the snobby/rude front-desk staff in person and over the phone on several occasions, but over the past several months, I've noticed much friendlier staff at the front desk, so it seems like they're making this a priority. They did a survey a while back, and I expressed my dissatisfaction with the front-desk - perhaps they got quite a bit of feedback about this particular issue. Either way, it's good to see it change because it's a nice little shop and their estheticians and massage therapists are really fantastic. Also, I adore Jen - I'm one of those people who wants to cry when I go for a wax because I have very sensitive skin. Usually there is (my) screaming and swearing involved - but Jen really knows what's she's doing and makes it as painless and fast a process as possible. I'm always shocked at how efficient she is - and how great of a job she does at the same time. It ain't cheap, but trust me, it's worth it not to go through a painful wax! After now reading great reviews of Jen's facials, I definitely would like to schedule one of those with her as well. Overall - I like Ruby Room - it's a clean, relaxing and classy place - and with a friendlier front-desk staff, I'll definitely keep giving them my business. read more

I just got back from my hair appointment and I wanted to share my experience ASAP! After finding a $35 Groupon for a cut, deep condition, and blow dry (and reading numerous Yelp reviews), I decided to give Ruby Room a try. I booked my appointment 3 weeks ago and received both text and phone call reminders yesterday, which was great. I arrived 5 minutes before my 1pm appointment and was taken right away. My stylist, Theresa, was amazing. I showed her a picture of the long bob that I was interested in, and she discussed how she would tailor the style to suit my face. It turned out PERFECTLY! I could not have asked for a more flattering cut. I have never had short hair before, and was super nervous going into it, but she did a fabulous job. I will be out of the country for 4 months, but once I am back I will most definitely be booking a follow-up appointment. Could not be more impressed. read more

I too was a groupon client. I had a cut and color with a stylist there. The place is nice and relaxing, so walking in I was pleased. I sat down in the chair and was asked if I'd like water or tea. I asked for some water, but was told after she checked that the 'filter' needed to be changed. She asked someone else to change it and started on my hair. I never did get my water and was there for a couple of hours. The cut was horrible. It was nothing like I described and it was so uneven. I had a big chunk of hair on the right side of my face and nothing close to it on the left side. I ended up cutting the chunk (to the best of my abilities) to try and match the other side when I got home. I asked for very light bangs (fringe) and got a whole lot of bangs. I almost stopped at a cheapie haircut place on the way home to see if they could even it out. While I absolutely love the color, my hair is now fried. I have colored my hair off and on for 15 years (most of it was lightening). I've always been told that I had very healthy hair from stylists. I would think they would say otherwise if nothing else to get me to buy products. My hair has never felt like straw before. I'm so glad that I only paid the groupon price for this visit. I was hoping to a regular patron for a good haircut and color, but not with those prices and the results I got. read more

My sister gave me a gift certificate for Christmas last year to try out some of RR's avant garde healing services. I was SUPER excited...so excited in fact that I put it off for a year because I wanted my service to be perfect and never could find the perfect time. So instead - I booked a much needed haircut. This was not a great idea. My stylist herself admitted to not being a believer in RR's philosophy with the relaxation sprays and energy cards..so there was no signature RR treatment of any kind. (Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought I was supposed to get a spritz of a scent to set the mood etc) The receptionist offered me water and hung up my coat - and that was the extent of the friendliness and personal touch. My stylist kept telling me how hot and sweaty she was and kept dropping the hairbrush on the floor. If she was sick - I do feel bad - but wish she would have stayed at home. The haircut is ok - but to be honest I haven't tried to style it properly because I'm fearful it's not what I asked for so it's been tucked away in a ponytail. I decided to use the balance of the gift card to buy some good hair products and have started crafting my apology speech to my regular stylist at Charles Ifergan. I definitely wouldn't go back for a haircut..not sure I'd go back at all to be honest :( UPDATE: My haircut ended up being fairly good once I took the time to style it. Also, someone from RR reached out to me to ask more about my visit which was both unexpected and appreciated. I added a star to my review accordingly. read more

I went for yoga, I won't go back. The place is beautiful, but really gimmicky. I suppose these places all are, to a certain extent. But seeing as how I don't really go for all of the swami charlatan bs, the posters explaining how paying for your yoga session ensures proper energy flow annoyed me. You mean I'm not paying them in exchange for a service, but because they need my positive energy? Give me a break. And the thongs for sale? Um, okay. More complaints: It was loud in there! Lots of noise from the street (i.e. sirens) and from the doorbell to the place, which in a robotic voice announces when the door opens. I also wasn't thrilled with the instructor. She pushed the movements along too quickly--I didn't have time to breath. And that's not to say that I was excessively challenged or anything, It was quite the opposite. She just seemed like she wanted to get it over with and she skipped a step at one point and was like, "wait, where was I?" She seemd like a sweet girl, but I didn't like her style. She kept having to stop to gather tools for us to use too, which was annoying. read more

I've been going to Ruby Room for a couple of years now for haircuts and spa treatments. I really like this place over other spas, it has a clean, casual and homey atmosphere. The staff is professional but warm and I like to shop in the boutique. Recommend Gladys for massage, especially if you are prenatal. She is gentle and really understands what a pregnant body needs and seems to genuinely care for her clients. Recommend Randee for cut and style. Consultation was right on target and the cut is exactly what I am looking for. Her rate is quite reasonable too for a master stylist. I've never stayed in the rooms upstairs but I have recommended them to two people who both enjoyed their stays. read more

I went here on a Groupon for a haircut. My stylist was Teresa and I loved the whole experience from the hair wash to the cut to the blow dry. She was fun to talk with and gave me lots of good suggestions for how to style and take care of my hair at home. I definitely want to come again. I can't give 5 stars however b/c Ruby Room has a policy to take a credit card down to protect the stylists. I am very conscious about protecting my identity and don't believe the risk of having them save my credit card info matches up with getting a haircut (its not like a dr appt!) . I've never run into this at any other salon in the area and I've been to quite a few of them. Also when I called and requested an appointment they had plenty of time slots available so its not like if something happened and I didn't show someone else was losing out on an appt and the stylist was out money earned they were not booked up anyway. read more

I LOVE this PLACE! I would be here every week if I didn't have to pay rent. I did, however, go here for my sistah's pre-wedding day o' pamper, which meant that I got to be pampered too!! First I have to say that the people that work here are like a cloud of goodness and calm that will crash over every once of stress that you are carrying. It is like walking into the most serene environment that you can possibly imagine. I got the Exclusive Arcona Facial with the Crystal Eyes and Reiki treatment. AMAZING! I was a bit freaked by idea of someone performing Reiki on me. I thought that some sort of spell would be cast over me, which would pull all my all wicked demons out and have them dancing around in the room. Instead, it was like every once of stress, sadness, and negativity was pulled from my core through the most incredible massage. The years of sun worship were not erased entirely from my face and eyes, but there was a noticeable difference. I felt divine! Of note..the upstairs is a sensual lair of all things mystical. There is also a yoga studio that I hope one day to attend. read more

I was really impressed that Ruby Room extended my Groupon deal to January so that I would be able to use the 2 coupons I bought on massages for my boyfriend and I in the couples room, which was why I jumped on the deal in the first place. I had to book the appointment a month in advance to get the room at a time that worked in my schedule. Day before the massage, the Ruby Room called to remind me of the appointment and confirmed that we had the couples room reserved. We were taken back to the waiting room, our coats and bags were hung up in the coat room, we were offered tea and water, filled out our paperwork, did a chakra reading with a bit of aroma therapy. But when it was actually time to start the massage, I was taken to an individual room. Turns out the couples room had been taken by another client at the time I had reserved. No one told our masseuses that we had originally booked the double, and no one told us that the double was not available. So we had to completely break from all the previous attempts at relaxing and figure out what the heck was going on. They gave me the option of rescheduling for another day, and I should have taken it, but after already having waited a month to get the room in the first place, I figured it wouldn't be worth waiting another month. Unfortunately, though, I couldn't shut my mind off during the massage. I kept thinking about how long we had been at the spa with no one telling us there had been a change, etc. I read that someone else on Yelp had the same experience of booking the couples room but then having it be unavailable when they showed up for their appointment; I'm not sure how the Ruby Room keeps making this mistake, but it was really frustrating and I ended up feeling a lot more stressed out when I exited the Ruby Room than when I came in! As far as the spa itself goes, it was nice, but I have definitely been to better, especially considering what Ruby Room charges for its full-price services. I could hear everything that the people in the next room were saying during my massage (actually it was just one room with a divider extending up to the ceiling), and there was a good deal of noise coming from other rooms as well. My room was very basic and quite chilly (they give you an electric blanket during the massage, but you get dressed again on an ice-cold tile floor). read more

My boyfriend celebrated a birthday sev. months ago-- part of his gift was a surprise hour massage at the Ruby Room. I chose this place because it is conveniently located two blocks away. I called several days in advance explaining it was a birthday gift. So after an early breakfast at Moonshine, we headed over to Ruby Room. Being a surprise and entering a girly looking place my b/f kind of lingered in the doorway. Meanwhile, I headed to the counter and let the girl behind the counter know we were here for the appointment. At which point I paid for the service right away & not wanting my b/f to pay a cent (and letting the girl behind the counter know that too), I left $20 for a tip. In all fairness, my b/f said the massage was great, but I was really disappointed to hear that he had also given her a $20 tip. Now when I left the tip, the girl who took it escorted my b/f to the back to meet the masseuse...I would have thought that she would have passed the message, obviously not. In any event, the massage was great (so he said). All in all, I think this place is a bit pricey ($100 for 60 min) and $40 tip. YEESH! Although that seems to be the norm in this area. SIDENOTE: I'm from the South Side of Chicago and have recently discovered a place called A Relaxed You (In Mt. Greenwood). Their massages are only $65 and are great & convenient when visiting the family..., well my family :) UPdate: I received a gift certificate for a facial here and had a great experience. ...adding a star. read more

This review is for the B&B only, not the spa or salon. I stayed here in suite 4C for two nights this week, and I have to say, other than the 4 flights of stairs I had to walk up (with help), this was a great place to stay. The area is really cool with lots of great cafes and bakeries and restaurants. They let me check in a little early and also had a storage room for my bags as I had to check out 10 hours before my flight. The bed was super comfortable, the air conditioning was central, not a window unit. If you read the instructions next to the shower, the water gets really hot if you want it to. You have to push a little button on the valve. The only things the room was missing were a phone and a coffee station. They also offer free wifi. I actually spent a whole lot of time in my room since i was working most of the time. It was really cute with lots of antique furniture, the linens and towels smelled nice and clean and not bleachy like most hotels. One staff member even offered to do my laundry for me. There's also a little kitchen on the third floor which i didn't use but was glad it was there. Ruby Room is overall a great place to stay and would recommend it to anyone who can walk up 4 fights easily. read more

Ok please go here and get a facial from Victoria. She is a master. So thorough, so knowledgeable! I'm literally walking home from my first facial with her and I feel compelled to write this review without delay. This review is just for the Inn/Hotel, as I didn't use any of the other services. Thought this was a perfect place to stay for a non-touristy, relaxing experience in Chicago. Will definitely be back. The room was very clean, spacious, and filled with beautiful light in the morning. I loved that there was not a TV and a kitchen was available should I need it. I wouldn't call this a bed and breakfast as no food is provided but they do have coffee. Bed was cozy. We stayed on the 4th floor and it was very quiet. Thought it was a great deal, and can't wait to stay there again! A few tips: Parking was relatively easy, just pay attention to the street signs. No elevator so be prepared for a climb. Chicago Ave is 4 blocks south - DO NOT miss Hoosier Mama Pie or Yuzu Sushi if you stay here!! read more

Ruby Room is about a half dozen things in one: salon, spa, yoga studio, shop, crystal bar (whaa?) guest house, and more. I didn't get a chance to check out a yoga class or utilize the spa services. However, as a place to stay, it's pretty ideal. The location is a big factor. Stumbling distance from Pizza Metro, Milk & Honey, Rainbo AND Dusty Groove? Big chain hotels, you can have your Michigan Ave. I will happily take Ruby Room's spot on Division and its proximity to both Wicker Park businesses and the Blue Line! It's not just the location that's appealing here, however. The space is surprisingly quiet (outside of some weird construction noise on my second morning there), and the rooms are tastefully appointed. Everything is sparklingly clean, with a neutral, calming color palette and dimmers (love this!) on all the lighting. The bed is so comfortable, you'll melt right into it -- with pillows and a giant down comforter to complete your cozy cocoon. To add to the home-away-from home factor, there's even a little shared kitchenette where you can make tea or pop some leftovers in the fridge. Only 2 (pretty insignificant) gripes: Because it's a historical building, there's no elevator. In other words, pack light -- you'll be haulin' your stuff up a few flights of stairs. They do warn you about this ahead of time, though, so just plan accordingly. I'm a lover of super-hot showers. There is a little button that you push on the temp. dial to increase the hot water past a certain temp. However, even with pushing that, I couldn't get the water quite hot enough for my tastes. read more

Like other reviews - we stayed here for the location and lack of options. Overall - the staff was very nice and the bed was comfortable. We did stay on the 4th floor with access to the fire escape / balcony (I believe it was 4d? 3rd floor has the same). Like other reviews - the stairs are steep but fine once you get used to them. The 3rd floor 'kitchen' was small - but good enough to store left overs. We weren't in Chicago to stay in our room the whole time anyway. All-in-all - Ruby Room has access to the "L" and surrounding 25-45 year old nightlife. read more

Picture, if you will, Spa Week, 2010. I really love getting facials, but feel like I can never afford them, so I made an appointment with the Ruby Room for a Spa Week Facial with Jennifer. it was wonderful! We started off choosing the aromatherapy scent we were going to use to revive my energy. Seemed a little hokey, but when I found out which one I was to use, the coincidence was a little overwhelming. Ihe facial itself was really nice and relaxing and my favorite part: NO extractions! yay!! My skin looked amazing, and Jennifer took the time to discuss an actual skin care regimen, which is something I'd been planning to do for some time. Because my sister's wedding is coming up, we're going to work together over the next several months to ensure my skin looks as nice as it can. So, I scheduled another facial appointment--I deserve it. ;) The Arcona skincare products have been really great as well. It's now 18 days after my facial and my skin looks just as nice as it did when I walked out of the spa. Totally worth checking out read more

I had read some great reviews so was excited to find a haircut groupon for this place! My hairdresser was Abbey. She was quiet and didn't smile much so kinda jammed with my personality. She was patient enough to me changing my mind about preferred length of my hair so that was nice. Haircut and blow dry looks good but I am little disappointed with their deep conditioning treatment. My hair are still frizzy and not as soft (I've had deep conditioning from other places) read more

Great experience. Energy healing focused. My first experience in using hot stones in my deep tissue massage. Very nice and the heat helped with the circulation of my rock hard back! They have many fun aspects to this place....products...clarvoyant/tarrot readings...use of energy cards into the massage. You pick one prior to starting so they see what is going on with you from that and then you also share what's your trouble areas, if any. We will be back. Its not just a massage...its an experience! read more

I went to Ruby Room today..I have mixed feelings about it. Firstly when I went to book my services with my Groupon, I was disappointed as I was 2 months in advance of my appointment and STILL couldn't get what I wanted...I wanted an hour long massage and the woman on the phone was most unhelpful. I also couldn't get the date I wanted and had to settle for today (being a Monday which really did not suit). I ended up having to book a 30 min massage, shampoo and mini scalp massagel, deep conditioning treatment and blow dry. I felt that there was not enough variety on their menu..I don't understand why they can't let you have a facial with your groupon..nor are there any pedicure or manicure services...not what I would expect from a spa. My Massage Therapist Cathryn was really nice and did a great job, I did enjoy the massage and felt relaxed..however.... I then was greeted by Laura..she didn't have the best attitude and for some reason was told that I was only having a blow dry...ummm no I had booked in for other hair services..she seemed rather inconvenienced when I told her this and checked the computer..and I was right and did have other services booked in. She shampooed my hair and did like a 2 min scalp massage..not impressed...then my deep conditioning treatment only lasted 5 mins...my hair does not feel great at all, not silky and hydrated like I would expect. She then proceeded to blow dry but you could tell her attitude was half hearted and I felt very uncomfortable..the blow dry looked ok but I wasn't thrilled. I don't plan on going back, I feel that the massage was great but not enough to go back. I feel it's pricey for what it is and they treat the Groupon customers way differently..not worth it in my opinion. read more

Went in here recently and had a great experience. Made an appointment with Randee for a hair cut. She did such a great job, I got exactly what I asked for and it has grown out still looking perfect. I've lived in Chicago for two years and this is by far the best cut I have gotten. I have been looking for a place that I can consistently get great service and would highly recommend Randee and Ruby Room. read more

This place is quaint and cozy. We enjoyed our stay very much. Our room however was by the kitchen and the staircase so it was very loud whenever any other guests were walking around. The steam shower was incredible. We asked for more towels and they were left at our door. We loved it because it feels like you're staying in a home rather than a hotel. No one bothers you unless you need something. Incredible location. We will visit again. read more

i found this place in the chicago NFT book. I was starving for a haircut and didn't see any salons nearby where I was staying (W city center)---unless I wanted someone to come to my hotel room and give me a private haircut as part of the 'whatever/whenever' service. Anyway, being desparate to get my bangs out of my face, and having circled the city center to no avail, I started flipping through chicago's little black book. There was a warm and alluring ad for Ruby Room on Diversity that sold me. I made the call over a perfect soy mocha at Intelligencia on Randolph. I explained the current state of my hair and the receptionist promptly squeezed me in with Jen who would be PERFECT for my hair's current situation. Cabbed it quickly over there to meet a Jen, who had not eaten and looked in rather a weak state. I asked if she was okay and she said she was fine, she just hadn't eaten. Well, Jen had the best fashion sense from the bunch, so that was a good sign. Skipping to the end, I love my haircut. It's short and semi-ladytron-ish. (my desired affect. UK hair is what I said, i think..) Post-haircut, I was reading the spa menu for Ruby Room over a cucumber martini.......and was freaked. It's always amazing to see all of the detailed and nich-y kind of things that spas offer but...maybe i've just never seen this type of menu because I'm from VA. I don't know...you can get your rocks read, and have a chinese herb session, you can have a photo of your aura taken, some extremely different stuff...they have basic to extreme services. it covers a lot of bases...you're sure to find something... read more

Alas, I am in LOVE...let me tell you why. I have just about the worst gastrointestinal tract anyone could possibly have. I have been monitoring my foods lately and discovered that I am sensitive to dairy, wheat and red meat. So I decide to do a three week detox. The detox has me feeling great and is helping to regulate me but it seems I need an extra push (no pun intended :). What can I do to help myself along? Hmmm...maybe I should get a colonic? Yup...that is what I will do. I searched all over to find the best person to help me with this and Wendy Beyer seemed to be a sure bet. I am soooo glad I chose to come see her. I walked into the salon and instantly felt calm. Wendy came to escort me to my appointment. Before we started, she picked out a scent that went with my aura (well I picked it out and it was perfect). Wendy was amazing! I am so glad I chose to come here. One of the best experiences I have had in a very long time. Wendy walked me through everything and was very gentle. I felt 10 lbs lighter after the session (turns out I really was lighter, a whole 6 lbs!). Wendy recommended that I return every week for about 8 weeks to get my colon back into shape. Unfortunately my budget doesn't allow for that right now, however I will be back. Actually, I can't wait to go back...I haven't felt that great in a long time. Just a fair warning, Wendy is very popular and fills up fast...book your appointment early! Thank you Wendy! Until we meet again! read more

Kimberly researched the issue and responded to me in a fair and honest manner. Because of Kimberly and the fact that the staff is highly talented - I am going to go back. The services are good and the management does care about its customers. This is often what is missing now a days, good old fashioned customer service. Just in time because my roots are starting to show!! read more
