I've been an extremely loyal customer of the Ruby Room throughout the years even when I no longer lived here in Chicago and traveled abroad. I have a deep love for all things spiritual based and found some incredible healers here that I had the unique pleasure of connecting with. Over the years I purchased a beautiful frosted quartz chakra singing bowl a traditional metal singing bowl from Tibet and numerous crystals and essential oils. I had a strange shopping experience here last weekend which doesn't reflect the experiences I've had prior. Typically the staff here is absolutely welcoming with an incredible enthusiasm and intense knowledge of the products they carry. However my most recent shopping experience here was not what I would call pleasant. The new staff didn't greet me and when I went to pick out certain items like chimes from Bali; a few products here were unlabeled. They seemed confused and disoriented trying to look up pricing. In the future I suggest the owners make a point of labeling all products to make it easier for their new staff in training. I ended up purchasing a large Balinese wood chime for its excellent sound quality; but I'm upset with the young lady for not allowing me to keep the tag that was attached to my instrument. I think she did this intentionally so I couldn't order one of these down the road online. I also noticed they had chakra tuning forks. I bought one and asked her if she could put one on hold for me till Wednesday. It was a Sunday evening last week and she refused to help me stating she'd only hold it if I pay for it in advance. I'm so glad she chose to treat me this way because I was inspired to do my own research and found the complete set of chakra tuning forks online on etsy for a third of the cost of what they charged me here! Regardless I continued my shopping and found some beautiful new incense cones and rope incense. I've never used rope incense before and asked the young lady wearing glasses how to use it properly. She said : "I don't know. I never used it before. Use your intuition" I mean I literally don't want to waste products by lack of knowledge so I thought her answer was snarky. I ignored the clerk's cold vibes and continued to buy more incense and a tiny tiger's eye crystal. At the end of my shopping my bill came out to over $150. The young lady asked if I'd like a small pouch for my crystal that I just picked out. I asked her if it was free and she said no it's an additional charge of 75 Cents. I told her I'd pass. I mean seriously? After 14 years of shopping here and referring customers here and stopping in for crystals and she can't give me a tiny complimentary cloth bag? The other team members in the past were so much kinder and the previous managers would always hold an item for me for a 24 hour period. Here these kindnesses would be appreciated but they couldn't extend that courtesy with me or even feign a smile. I love the products here and before this one cold shopping experience I'd never had complaints but I'm leaving this review up here in the hopes it's used as constructive criticism moving forward. Oh and by the way I did use my intuition on how to properly use my rope incense I bought here and I also found the following paragraph cited on Google search in case anyone needs to know: [To burn your Rope Incense, light one end as you would a standard incense stick. Once it's alight, blow out the flame to allow the stick to smoulder and release its aromatic smoke. Rest a lit stick in a heatproof dish of sand or ash, or a Rope Incense Burner. Allow to cool before disposing of the ash.] To the owners of Ruby Room please label ALL your products clearly to make it easier on your staff when they are alone. Also advise them on how to properly use the products you are attempting to sell. Maybe let them know it's okay to provide a small pouch to any customer who spends over $100 at your new age store. Ruby Room changed the header image of their Yelp page today in order to remove photos of their Inn to support their claim that the Inn is not part of their business so that Yelp would remove my review. THIS OVERNIGHT REBRANDING WAS DONE SPECIFICALLY TO REMOVE MY REVIEW. Earlier today, owner Kate asked me to remove the review and owner John offered to refund 50% of my charge if I removed it. I had not accepted. I have attached a screenshot of this exchange with John, as well as a screenshot of their Yelp business page header from yesterday that included photos of the Inn. Luckily I still had the page open in my browser. RUBY ROOM SPA & SHOPS AND RUBY ROOM INN ARE THE SAME BUSINESS. THEY ARE TRYING TO FOOL YELP TO REMOVE REVIEWS THAT THEY DO NOT LIKE. Here is the original review: I've stayed in hotels, inns, and hostels of various quality all over the world, but this was hands-down the worst experience I've ever had. If you are considering staying here, beware: RUBY ROOM INN IS A CATFISH. 1. SAFETY: The keys to bedrooms and access code info for each floor are kept in a mailbox in front of the building on a busy sidewalk for anyone to grab. Additionally, the locks to my room did not work properly. I had to kick the door about 20 times to get the deadbolt to lock. Also, the "garden" is accessible to anyone at all hours of the night, and has a staircase that leads right up to the rooms. 2. FILTHY: The bathroom had not been cleaned. The sink was full of man pubes, the area around the toilet was disgusting, and the bathroom trash had not been emptied. To top it off, the bed duvet had stains. See photos. 3. NO TOWELS: Even though my check in time was 3pm, towels didn't show up until sometime after I left, around 9pm. After my long trip, all I wanted to do was take a shower. I had to use my travel blanket as a towel and a t-shirt as a bath mat. 4. NOISE: On my second night, there was a huge party in the "garden" that lasted until 5am. Club music blasting all night long. People screaming. I was afraid one someone was going to stumble up the stairs and try to get into my room or something. Didn't sleep at all. 5. OWNER JOHN WAS A HUGE JERK: There is no one on sight to help you. If there's a problem, like towels missing, etc, you are out of luck, because your only option is to call this guy John, who will make it very clear that he would rather have you leave "his hotel" than deal with you. When I called about the broken locks and missing towels, he talked to me like he was trying to calm down a dog. As I was trying to get the lock to work, he said I sounded "too frustrated to make happy" and that I should find another hotel. Even after I explained that I didn't have time to find another hotel because my stay was so brief and I had someplace to be in a few hours, he began texting me other hotel options, which I found incredibly tacky. He made it very clear that he didn't want the business of someone who was requesting towels and basic security. Other things of note: The "garden view" they claim to have is really just the view of a slab of cement that is accessible to anyone on the street. See photo. Bathroom electrical socket didn't work and a part of the bathroom ceiling was exposed. See photo. THERE IS NO ELEVATOR. They hide this information in 13px font on the website, which is not even ADA web compliant because it's too hard to read. Upon leaving they say to check out with the "concierge" after 11am. The "concierge" is really just the clerk at the New Age shop/spa under the hotel, and this shop was closed. But this is just more proof that the Spa, Shop, and Inn are the SAME BUSINESS. read more

Wow! I've come to get a massage here a handful of times. I always wait a little too long to get one. When I saw my usual massage therapist was no longer working there I was bummed but I liked Cameron's profile and decided to book my overdue massage. The card I pulled beforehand was "be supported."Cameron had mentioned they think of this card when they feel they need a little hug from above. I feel like they were my little hug from above I absolutely needed. They were attentive to every single point in my body that needed work- which was everywhere. There was a glitch with the music and one point and they handled it like an absolute professional. We both had a laugh about it later. I feel refreshed and relaxed and literally like a new human. I had a massage with Logan today. I was immediately put at ease by the atmosphere and everyone in the location. When Logan took me back to the spa area, I felt comfortable and safe. We did an intuitive card pull for what spray to use, and it ended up being the perfect fit for my current state. I relayed to Logan some issues affecting my personal life. He instantly empathized and made a plan to target the exact places to focus our work. The massage was relaxing, professional, and absolutely what I needed. I stumbled upon this place while looking for sage. Apparently sage is suppose to stop the lights from turning on by themselves...or an electrician...but sage is cheaper so I started with this. The Ruby Room had various sage options and the staff was really helpful as to what sage worked best for my particular situation. While checking out I saw a sign about Groupons so I decided to get one and try the intuitive blend and bio mat therapy. This consisted of a tarot card reading...that I passed on. It was explained to me the tarot helps if you have a question or a problem in your life. I decided to spend the whole time on the mat. This is where stuff got weird. I believe the gentleman's name was Jacob (but it was a few weeks ago I had the service, so I might be wrong). Anyhow, he started by my head and moved around my body. Wherever his hands were (about six inches away from my body) I could feel intense heat in that area of my body. He gave me some tips for things to work on. Overall, did this help my energy...I have no idea. I left there feeling calm and relaxed though. AND the sage worked...my lights are on only when I turn them on and fans don't magically turn on....so that's worth four stars right there. read more

This is the most economical, aesthetically pleasing, safe, and pleasingly eclectic hotels to stay at when visiting Chicago. It is a historic property, so there are no elevators and the rooms are up a wonderfully narrow set of stairs or two, but the benefits of being right in the main drag of Wicker Park (just a quick 3 miles to downtown), cannot be overstated. The rooms are modern, with goose down pillows, 500 thread count linens and sheets, and quirky quilts and object d'art that really make it easy to not notice the lack of a tv or a wired telephone (which most of us never use). The prices are downright cheap and that's one of the reasons that we use this place very regularly. It is in a great, central piece of Chi-town surrounded by shops, great breakfast nooks, and unique shops, where you can save money and travel to the craziness of downtown at will. I love this place and everyone we have put up here swears they would use it again. It is a hidden gemstone which, curiously, is also one of the many holistic specialties of the adjoining "Ruby Room" retail store which should NOT be missed. **This review is for Ruby Room's mini location on Delaware.** My god JEFF IS A DREAM. I stumbled on this little crystal and card shop on my way to my office and had no idea what a treat I was in for. It was lovely listening to Jeff talk to a family about crystals, cards, Ruby Room, and life in general. For a store that's so teeny tiny I would expect him (and everyone else) to struggle to move around to look at products, get free readings, and try on tester scents but somehow there was just enough room for all of us. I enjoyed getting to know my fellow crystal-searchers over the main table. The place was laid out so well and prices are comparable to other crystal shops I've seen in Chicago. It felt like a shimmering retreat in the concrete of downtown. Holy moly is this place beautiful. And Jeff is a welcoming, relatable, hospitable concierge guiding you through the whole process from start to finish, no matter your level of experience with crystals or spirituality. I've always been a bit confused when reading the reviews for Ruby Room. Is it a boutique, spa, yoga studio, hotel??? But after attending last night's 5 year anniversary party I think I may have figured it out (ah-ha). Ready for this? It's all of that and more! Oh yes, Ruby Room may just be the perfect place to hibernate this freakin cold winter. Still need to do some holiday shopping? Well, head on over to Ruby Room and choose from the many beauty products, candles, crystal jewelery, etc. Any gift from here is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone's face (including mine...hint hint). Split ends? Yeah, yeah I hear ya on that one. Or just looking for a new stylish do? Just walk beyond the boutique into their hair salon and their team of hair stylists are hard at work. I'm pickier than most when it comes to my hair and have been going to the same hairdresser for 9 years (yay for Lenny at the Red Door Spa), but I did notice they use Aveda products here which makes them OK in my book...at least for other peple. :) I thought that was pretty much all there was to Ruby Room, but then I was invited to check out their yoga studio. Now here's the catch- you have to walk about 5 steps outside (brrr) to walk into the yoga studio, but we're chicagoans- we can handle a little cold (ok, i can't...but I'm from Florida). Anyway, the 5 steps in the cold is worth it because the yoga studio is gorgeous, smells like gingerbread cookies (mmmmm) and I felt calm just walking through the room. I love it- no need to actually do the yoga when just walking in makes me calm! And apparently they have people drumming during the yoga class- how cool is that?? There is another boutique (geez, this place is like a mall!) attached to the yoga studio with comfortable clothing, crocs (I don't get the crocs craze, but perhaps you do), and these really cool MBT shoes (Masai Barefoot Technology Shoes and Sandals). Apparently if you wear these shoes they will totally change the shape of your leg? Really? So no more spinning class?? I put them on and looked/felt like a circus act trying to walk around in them, but for new legs I'm game looking like a doofus. And then I found out they were $250. Nevermind, I'll keep the cellulite legs I have.... Stay with me cause the best is to come....Ruby Room also has guest rooms to rent! Who knew??? Maybe you did, but I had no clue! I walked up more stairs (who needs the MBT shoes when they have this many stairs) and checked out one quaint shabby chic (I LOVE shabby chic) guest room. Wow- I really could move in for the duration winter! The only thing I really didn't like was that the prices they had on the tiny sheets of paper did not match up to my emailed receipt. If you get this package, I recommend calling them rather than booking it online (booking online requires additional payment). My therapist, Chris, was great! We started off by picking one of their energy cards. I picked "balanced", and Chris sprayed the balanced spray intermittently throughout our entire sessions. The massage room was very quiet, with relaxing music playing in the background. The amount of pressure Chris applied was perfect and he really worked on my trouble areas! I got a Groupon haircut here with Theresa, and I couldn't have been happier! I loved my haircut. It was everything I had described to her... but even better! I have shortish, fine and thin hair, and not every stylist can grasp the reality of the fine-haired woman. This review is primarily for the Inn: I travel to Chicago for work with some regularity and, unless there is a pressing need for me to stay downtown, I always choose to stay at the Ruby Room on my visits. I just love it! When I arrive to my room I immediately feel a sense of calm and relaxation. There are no crowds, no elevators, no TV's, no children. The guest rooms feel like my bedroom at home: cozy, warm and quiet - which is exactly what I like. My favorite part of each guest room is the spa-quality bathroom replete with steam shower. After getting off a plane and trudging through a snowy Chicago winter to take meetings, a steam shower is absolutely a piece of heaven! While I rarely have enough time to avail myself of the salon and spa services, I have enjoyed them on the occasions when I have. The Ruby Room is a 10-minute drive to the Loop and convenient to 1-90, so the location is quite convenient. Moreover, the Wicker Park neighborhood is such a great place to base oneself. The selection of shopping, restaurants, and coffee shops in the neighborhood is just superb! Every time I am here I find a new favorite place. Current stand-outs include Coast Sushi, Red Square Sauna, Caffe Streets, Antique Taco, Falafel and Grill - to say nothing about the vintage shops on N. Milwaukee. So my girlfriend and I saw the stones in the window and decided to take a look inside, see what the place was about. They had some cute looking things out so we figured, why not? We're exploring the neighborhood together! We were dressed in hoodie and jeans- street clothes. I'm Black, she is White. The usual. The guy at the counter sees me come into the place after her and turns off the music. Like, there was a full on playlist happening and he just shut it off. Okay... So I'm immediately uncomfortable because he's not looking me in the eye but is following me when I walk. (I go to the right side of the place, he turns his body fully towards me, magazine barely up as he stared at me. I gave my GF 'the look' and we switch places, he did the same thing. All while this place is DEAD silent.) My GF picked up a few things and looked at them as we were exploring. Holding up tarot stuff and fancy incense. I keep my hands to my side and say nothing. Just nodding along. I knew he was watching me, waiting for me to steal something. Let me be clear, I'm 25 with a full-time well paying job. On my off days I'm allowed to wear jeans. If I wanted to, I very well could have bought 20 of those incense sticks and a stupid selenite lamp- but why would I patronize an establishment that has employees that stare you down when you enter the place? It's rare that I feel this uncomfortable and targeted in a store but this place has left a SOUR taste in my mouth, as well as my girlfriends. I decided to treat myself to a little self care and came across Ruby Room on Groupon. I'd walked by enough, but hadn't tried it yet. I bought the spa pamper package which included a 60 min "ener-ssage" with hot Himalayan stones and hand/foot salt scrub. It was one of the best massage experiences and I felt physically lighter upon leaving. The spa environment is clean, bright and airy and everyone is friendly. Annie was my masseuse and she did a wonderful job checking in to ensure I was comfortable and that the pressure was okay. I enjoyed the chakra aspect of the massage, this entailed choosing which chakra to focus on prior to the massage using tarot-Esque methods. When you select your chakra the oils that are paired with your massage match that energy. Annie was knowledgeable and shared many great tips post-massage to ensure I had a fully spiritual experience. Tried a massage here and I could tell the masseuse was experienced and knows what she was doing. HOWEVER, I am giving my experience 3 stars because she ignored my request. I specifically stated I wanted certain parts of body where I have chronic constriction worked on, and instead I got general body rub down. It was relaxing, but not what I needed nor what I asked for. Those who are looking for general relaxing massage experience would probably love this place, but if you are looking for specific things to work on you may want to double check. Edit to update : so I had a chance to go back for a second time for an area-specific massage with a different masseuse. As a person who identifies as trans, massages always scared me. Being naked in front of anyone is scary. Logan was comforting and accepting of this. The good: Great location. Comfortable bed. The bad: No elevator and the stairs are winding and narrow. 54 steps to the 4th floor. Older potential guest should avoid this place like the plague as you have to carry your luggage up these difficult steps. I am 67 and walk 4 miles a day and this was a challenge. For a spa, the shower and amenities are awful. Lukewarm water and a shower head that spit water. No products to speak of. No TV in the room (not a big deal, but you should be aware). There is free wifi. No front desk staff after the spa downstairs closes. In their defense there is 24 hour support available and they did respond within 20 minutes when we were locked out (the young lady at check-in neglected to show us the proper way into the Inn section of the establishment). You are paying for your stay up front. The following is an addition to my original comments above. This was originally a 1 star review. I have changed it to 3 stars because of the outstanding response from the Inn to my comments. This is an indication of Ownership that cares about their guests experience and for that alone they deserve great credit. They have already changed their disclosures regarding the steps, lack of elevator and other amenities. They offer a good alternative to other BnB type properties with a superior location. read more

I stayed at Ruby one evening and the room was clean and well kept. That's not my problem with this place. My problem is the staff isn't trained correctly on the city rules for parking. I inquired with the receptionist about the parking on the street overnight. I was instructed to make sure I paid the parking until 10:00 pm and again starting at 8:00 am. To my surprise I walked out about 10:00 am and my car was gone. The staff on in the morning was aware of the parking restrictions... However, the most important person (receptionist) had no clue of the actual laws. Very disappointed that to save some money I stayed here and when it's all said and done I could have stayed at the Ritz. I have never stayed or received any services here but this is the best new age shop I've found in Chicago! I can't believe how reasonable the prices are because these kinds of shops often seem to be rip off's. I bought a selenite wand ($18), crystal ball ($15), and Power Ionics tourmaline bracelet ($26). I started practicing witchcraft a couple months ago so the wand and crystal ball were must have's! The sales people here were really helpful with all my questions too. Went in today for a facial and it was all just wonderful. I had a Groupon for microdermabrasion with a treatment. With walking in the gentleman at the front desk that helped me is just full of hospitality, such a joy and bright soul. I got to then fill out some paperwork and meet Victoria who performed my services for the day. She asked me some brief questions with an overview of my paperwork then we got started. Everything used on my face smelled so light and elightful, they use a line called Arcona which is a fruit based skin care line. Everything was relaxing and she gave me some great recommendations. I will definitely be back for facials and more services! I also purchased a started kit to use at home and it was very reasonably priced for everything you get. read more

I've had a lot of stress lately so I came in for an intuitive reading with Leslie and an enerssage with Jose. Both were wonderful. Leslie was so kind and compassionate through her work and it was a very interesting experience that I hadn't done before. I love it and it was spot on. The massage with Jose was amazing. I felt comfortable the whole time and relaxed, and felt like he really listened to what I was there for. I left feeling so good and like I had needed that massage so badly. PUSHY. The staff seems cult-like at times. The products they have to offer are definitely the draw so know what you want, insist that you are not interested in the 50 other things they have to show you and walk out. They will attempt to sell you on their yoga classes, pet therapy (yes you read it correctly - I'm not fucking with you) and a bunch of other stuff that you can pay for less elsewhere. Sure ladies, you're pretty but damn, you're screaming "DESPERATE FOR BUSINESS." I won't deny that the space is very eye catching. It better be for the price you're paying!!!
