Steak with spinach and potatoes (blurry because we had some [and by some, I mean a lot] wine...sorry!)

Every. Last. Bite. Was. Amazing (Even things I don't like anywhere else, like lobster ravioli). $175 a couple gets you 6 or 7 courses (I lost count and may have forgotten to take a pic) of some of the best food I have ever eaten (and I've been all over the world). It's tasting menu, so you get what you get and you like it, but you WILL like it. Bring your own wine! And don't be deceived by the unassuming decor; this place serves world class food. This was a great experience. Highly recommended.

Food price / quality rating 7. Atmosphere is like a French basement cafe. Located in a very cute, tiny old village in north western CT, this place serves up a six course meal for a prix fix charge, which is basically a Tapas service. The restaurant is open Friday through Sunday, April through December, and service starts promptly at 7 pm. Although it was very charming and fun, I didn't feel that it was worth the cost. Several of my courses, which were supposed to be hot, were lukewarm, served on a cold plate, a pet peeve of mine. There was also a lack of flavor in some of the offerings. All guests are served as each course is ready, and it seemed that our table was consistently served last, contributing to the lack of proper temperature. Two of them, the mushroom soup and the shrimp and sea scallops had sand in them. The presentations were very nice, and the service was good. It's BYOB, which is nice, but the prix fix is $140 per person including tip. The venue seats less than twenty people, so I understand the higher cost, but I felt the value was lacking.

The former railroad station in West Cornwall is a fitting home for this culinary marvel settled on a hillside along the banks of the Housatonic river. Upon entry, diners are engulfed in the flaming kitchen that is surrounded by heavily worn floor boards. Charles will welcome you while Guy furiously prepares delicacies for that evenings menu degustation which changes daily and is the only choice. There is only one seating each night and diners will certainly understand their providence once plates begin arriving. A low ceiling enhances the proposition that the meal is being conducted in a country farm house en Provence. Rickety antique chairs and mismatched table clothes adorn old wooden tables. Silverware is an ensemble of warmly polished forks, knives and spoons. Plates may or may not match at each table. The wine glasses are refilled frequently, should you choose to bring your own bottle - there is no alcohol for sale on premise. In a recent trip, the first course is a prime hamburger topped with prosciutto, shaved green beans, a red wine reduction using marrow, a chicken liver mousse and a charred baby onion - there is no bun. Such ingredients may read disparate and heavy but actually present a complex and balanced set of flavors. Rich beef is salted by the prosciutto whilst the chicken liver mousse adds buttery a sensation but similarly stays light and airy. The onion is sweet and earthy, a perfect medium to mop up the extra richness of the reduced wine marrow. Course two is a scallop shell filled with large, tender shrimp and scallop - poached carefully in a quenelle sauce. The duo is broiled with a shredded cheese puff pastry. Slightly lemony, this rich, cream sauce envelops the sweet scallop and shrimp meat in a deep and lengthy bite. Nuanced yet simple, the third course is a fitting finale to such a rewarding first two courses: an sumptuous tomato based risotto simmered with lobster broth and peas. Sizeable chunks of lobster tail, claws and knuckle meat, large shrimp and pork belly are arranged atop the rich risotto broth. Saffron gives a shout to onions and peas. A delicacy of perfectly cooked seafood. The dessert course is simple yet elegant: a deep fried mocca donut with a vanilla creme fraiche next to a square of dark chocolate nestled on a plume of chocolate mousse. Airy mousse - almost whipped cream - coats the firm chocolate bar. The light dough of the "donut" absorbs the sweet vanilla sauce. An extraordinary plate. This simple, unpretentious kitchen wins again and again. If you can get in, go, frequently. This is a gastrophile's dream.

A real gem. Food, service and ambience are about as good as it gets. Worth the trip from Manhattan.

We arrived and sat outside on the terrace. The road nearby was not too loud and the terrace was great shade on a warm day. We ordered gazpacho, ratatouille, onion soup, and clams linguini. Importantly, I almost NEVER order clams at restaurants. My family and I dig and eat at least a thousand clams a year in Rhode Island and I always assume and expect that no place can prepare them as well or as freshly. When the dish arrived I saw three cherrystones on top and figured this would be a small plate for a big price. I was completely wrong. The dish was better than anything I've made or had out. Full of tender chopped clams, the flavor and sauce were superb and the bread was excellent. We finished the meal with the pastry desert (cream puff with ice cream and chocolate sauce) and a merengue floating on a vanilla sauce. Both were wonderful. The service was great- Emelina (?) was very attentive and gave us spot on advice (and some basic French lessons) with a smile. The owner, Rober, also stopped by to make sure our experience was good. I would recommend strongly to anyone in the area who appreciates fine dining without too much fuss or to anyone wondering what French food is really like.

Unfortunately, the service didn't match the quality of the kitchen. At one point, I noticed servers handling bread with their hands and then bringing out food without washing them, which was honestly unpleasant to see while sitting at my table. It made the overall experience feel less comfortable than it should have been. I'd still come back for the food, but I really hope the service and hygiene standards improve.

We were seated by the window and were given freshly baked bread. We ordered the French classics: mussels, escargot, duck leg confit, and steak and fries. The mussels came out first and were pretty average. I usually like sipping the wine broth it comes with or dipping fries/bread into the broth. The escargot had plenty of oil and seasoning. It was actually too salty even though my coworker requested less salt on everything. I enjoyed dipping the fresh bread into the oil. Lastly came the entrees. I was a bit disappointed in both of them. The hanger steak was cooked medium rare like I wanted but the texture was not great. I was hoping for a more tender cut and this was a bit tough and lean. The frites were cooked well and very crispy. The duck confit was very tender but I didn't think it was amazing. Overall I don't think I will be returning to this restaurant with so many other great options around. I might be biased as I am not too familiar with French cuisine but we already sampled most of the classics already.

Although Poughkeepsie has a decent variety of excellent restaurant options, there aren't a lot of upscale places to select from. We opted to book reservations for Brasserie 292 for a Saturday night. When we arrived, we were nearing the end of the dinner rush. We were sat right away, unfortunately it wasn't all too romantic being sat in the middle of the restaurant but understandably the restaurant is on the smaller side. The waiter was attentive, and addressed any of our questions about the menu, even hunting down the bottle of pinot noir we ordered. We opted to start off our night by splitting a half-dozen oysters which came with their in-house hot sauce, and an order of pouple, which was cooked to perfection. For our entrees we selected the red wine braised lamb shank and the dry aged prime NY steak. Since sides for both entrees were not mentioned on the menu, we also ordered sides - wild mushrooms, brussels sprouts and crispy smoked peewee potatoes. Overall the food was excellent and I'm still dreaming about the mushrooms. If we lived locally, would we go back, maybe but overall we had a great experience. Since this was an upscale restaurant, I opted to not photograph our meals and enjoyed being present in the moment.
