We drove down to try out some Dim Sum after seeing a review of the place. Our usual spot is in the city, but living out of the city, we don't typically like to drive down there. Dumplings were delicious, they were very full! We tried a few types and they were all great. A little disappointed on the salt and pepper squid, I def wasn't expecting it to be deep fried. And not sure where the salt and pepper was. Radish cakes were alright, it was missing something but I couldn't quite put my finger on it! The tea was delicious. You can't beat loose leaf jasmine! We also had the sesame balls which were great. It was packed for Sunday lunch. Don't expect a quiet environment. Everyone is lively and out with their families. Service was very prompt. Looking for a new place to try we decided to give this place a try. we have eaten at its predecessors and wanted to see what the new place is like. we opted to order online for to go pick up. We placed an order online at 3:30 and selected a 4:15 pick up to avoid the dinner rush. We got there at 4:15 and proceeded to pick up the food and was told a few more minutes. it really turned out to be another 30-minutes! in the meanwhile I waited in the lobby and observed the host shouting into the kitchen constantly rather than walking and talking to the back of house staff. it was awkward for everyone in the lobby and dining room. Food: 1) Peking pork chop - pretty good. 2) House special chow mein - average. mostly noodles and onions with minimal protein. not sure what makes this house "special". I've had better at Panda Express. 3) Special chicken - it was pretty dried like it was zapped in the microwave too long. 4) Roast pork with fish fillet clay pot - this was pretty good with the exception of the roast pork which was really all fat. the fish was good and so was the veggies. 5) steamed bbq pork buns - decent. 6) Shanghai pork dumplings - pass. it was doughy and dry. 7) Steamed egg custard cream buns - this was pretty tasty. 8) Pot stickers - average. Not sure how I missed this place on my quest for Chinese food on the eastside, but I made it in today and here is my review. I recently read 40% of Bellevue was Asian, so I would not only expect more Chinese, but certainly better than I've tasted. Entering this place, they had a health department chore of OK. Not a strong score as 2 are better. Once seated, they appeared unhappy we didn't want Dim Sum. I'd reviewed the menu ahead of time and knew I wanted to try the Potstickers and Chicken with Green Onion and Ginger. I've never had the latter but love Ginger Beef which I assumed was the same dish with beef. Potstickers were okay, large in size, but didn't have that sausage flavor that I love. The chili oil was also sweet and not hot, which also dulled the flavor. When the main course came, I saw a lot of red onion, some green and no ginger. Once I tried it, it didn't taste as expected. There was no bite from ginger the sauce was basically soy sauce and it just tasted like cafeteria food. I didn't like it. I stopped the server and told her I didn't see, or taste ginger and she looked at the dish and said she didn't see any either, then she walked away. Hot tea was served, but we had to ask for water and in the end, I didn't get the impression that service was important here. The restroom was also filthy and smelled terrible, which could be part of the low health score. This place is in too nice of a neighborhood to not offer better. Clearly, we won't be back. read more

A group went in for dinner on lunar new year day. Ambiance is nice but I have to say the service needs improvements. One of the wait staff was extremely rude when we asked for some items as if I am there to bother him. Sir you work in a restaurant. We thought it could be due to the lunar new year they are busy and rude but after reading some of the reviews here, it is NOT. Now on to the food. The fried chicken was great portion but really dry. Their chicken egg drop soup was bland. Salt and pepper prawn was a disappointment because it came all peeled. I was not expecting that. I do expect that they should have asked the table whether they wanted the prawns peeled or not. Salt and pepper squid was rubbery - again, wow. Beef chow mein was the only tasty dish. Overall, the dim sum is all pretty good, some are a hit or miss and on the blander sider but really depends on the day. Great for big groups as there are several big round tables with lazy susans. We had been coming for years to King's and was quite disappointed with our first experience when they became Royal Kitchen. So, we decided to give it another try. At 5:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, they weren't too crowded, but already extremely short staffed. One server seemed to be doing all the work, and he was harried! Bussing tables, taking orders, delivering the goods, and presenting the bill. He was already doing his best, but we still waited a while to get out orders in. A bit later, two more servers started work but more diners came in, so service was still slow. There were numerous tables waving for someone to take their order or to pay the bill, but food was delivered quickly once the order was in. We had the crab and fish maw soup, pea shoots stir-fried with garlic, XO sauce eggplant and fish slice in hot pot and sweet and sour pork ribs. Standard fare just to gauge where they are at now. The soup was a bit dilute with hardly any crab meat but the pea shoots were perfectly done. The hot pot tasted great but was mostly eggplant. And the sweet and sour pork ribs was far from what we used to get when they were still King's. So the verdict is..... decent and improving, but we'll wait for another 6 months before trying them again. Although the flavors were alright, I just didn't feel like there was enough protein in any of the three dishes we ordered, and it seemed rather odd to tack on a surcharge for getting takeout rather than dining in (maybe this is a King County or WA State thing?). On the plus side, service was fine - we placed our order over the phone, and it was accurate, packaged nicely, and ready exactly when promised. The only one that was kind of off was the tofu shrimp roll it was a little clunky but still tasty, I like my tofu rolls a little thinner where I can hold it with chop sticks and then put it in my mouth and this one is a little thick. Still it was tasty everything else I thought was good. I have had a lot of dim sum and can say this is better than the average and quite good. Not sure why the ratings for this restaurant are so low. Royal Kitchen's dim sum is easily the best in Bellevue and doesn't lose out to some of the more popular locations in Chinatown like Jade Garden in my opinion. The fact that the restaurant is always packed on the weekends speaks for itself. Pros: - Food comes out pretty quick (my personal favorites are shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings sui mai, radish cake, pan-fried chives and shrimp dumpling, and deep fried taro). - Portions are decently sized and warm/crispy. - I like to eat my dim sum dishes with sauces, so I appreciate that there is soy sauce and sambal sauce already on the table. - You can join the waitlist via the Yelp app. Just keep in mind that they seem to be strict about the entire party being at the restaurant when it is your turn to be seated. Cons: - You might have to wait a while if you don't avoid peak traffic time. I would go right as they open (10am on Sat/Sun), but you can also get lucky sometimes between 11-12pm as the first round of dim-sum goers are leaving. - Service can be hit or miss. Sometimes it can take a while to get your check, get to-go boxes, pay for your meal, etc. I find this understandable given how busy they usually are. read more

A Difficult Experience at Royal Kitchen Chinese Seafood Restaurant in East Seattle After an exciting weekend hike, we came to this popular dim sum restaurant in the Eastside. However, the experience left much to be desired. When we arrived and asked for a menu, the waiter handed one to those who spoke Cantonese and English, but refused to give one to us when we requested it in Mandarin. Our friends with us pointed out this discrimination, and reluctantly, they finally gave us a menu. Other serving staff seemed friendly, and I understand they might be busy, but at least they should treat all customers equally. The service for delivering the food was indeed very fast, but the food quality was inconsistent. Molten Lava Buns: Today's highlight, small muffin-sized buns with a loose pineapple bun top and a traditional bread base. The molten lava inside was delicate and delicious. Beef Tendon: Very tender and crispy, but the portion was disappointingly small compared to other Cantonese steamed dishes of the same level. Chicken Feet: Well-seasoned and sweet, but personally, I prefer them to be softer. It's just a matter of taste. Salt-Baked Chicken: Today's biggest disappointment, extremely salty, it seemed like they didn't spread the salt mixture evenly. The meat was not very tender, and some parts tasted bitter due to excessive salt. Scallop and Shrimp Dumplings: Don't order this dish. It's not about seasoning; there were very few scallops, and some shrimp portions were powdery and not fresh. In terms of price, it's relatively cheap in the Eastside, but the incident at the beginning really made the dining experience unpleasant. I probably won't come back again. The only reason I have at 3-stars is due to non transparent pricing. They mentioned that small dimsum costs about $5.50 and bigger ones at $7.50. Another reason is that our siomai didn't come out so we were trying to get them to remove that. But in spite not counting the siomai, we were still unsure why our total was more than what we were calculating unless they have additional costs that they were charging aside from the taxes. I know that this place has always been like this wherein they never tell you what their dimsum costed but with the changed in management from Kings you'd assume they'd make that more transparent and made changes to that, and show to customers how much they charge. Food wise though: the Chinese broccoli it was purely big stems that they didn't bother cutting the more harder stems to eat. The honey walnut shrimp is good. The soy sauce chow mien was very dry and noodles weren't soft. The beancurd rolls I think were fine. The shrimp dumpling had thicker skin than I would've expected. Also, i felt that the male server we had was annoyed with us too after asking for the pricing so we know that we're paying the correct amount. read more

Very average For the most part, they don't use carts. However, the dim sum items aren't made to order either. Pork buns, eggplant and shrimp, soup dumplings, and radish cake, etc. all seem to have been sitting in their kitchen for a bit and were somewhat lukewarm. Radish cake - Flavor is okay, but eating these hot is a small pet peeve I have. Texture also seems to have suffered a little. Not great. Chicken feet - It's alright. Chinese broccoli - Not bad. Chiu chow (fun guo) - Easily the best item today. I always like the mix of flavor and texture in these, and this one was actually hot and tasted fresh. Soup dumpling - Kinda bad, honestly. They have a clipboard where you put your name down and they will call your name. We waited around 15-20 min for 2 people. FOOD There's no carts here...instead you tick dim sum staples off of a piece of paper. Despite the slow service fiasco (see details below), food came out within minutes after putting in our order. Most of the food came out hot -- the only dish I was disappointed with was the crispy tofu topped with shrimp as it was lukewarm and was definitely sitting out for awhile. SERVICE Now it could be that we visited on a very busy holiday weekend, but service was abysmal. It took at least 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us with a menu, then another 10 minutes for someone to come back with tea, then it took forever to get our check alone. I think I only saw around 3 waitstaff tops for over 30 tables, some of them being larger parties. PARKING The restaurant is located in a strip mall, so parking is ample. We came here on a Monday evening after they had changed their name from Kings to Royal kitchen. The waiters and staff seemed to be similar and interior decor were the same. There was a decent amount of tables filled for a monday evening. The parking situation was easy with ample spaces to make it pleasant to get to the restaurant. The location is conveniently off northup way opposite the mercury flagship store. The ambiance was decent, it was standard for an asian restaurant with tables and booths and seemed to be decently clean. Their front area was similar to Kings and still tight and disorganized. It could use a little more open space and modern decor, but seemed pretty normal. The food itself was very tasty. We ordered a salt and pepper lobster, pan fried noodles, salt and pepper pork chop, dim sum dumplings, and stir fried pea leaves. The food all came out hot and fresh and was very fast to make it to our table (maybe 10-15 min). Everything was well seasoned and their deep fried items were crispy and not greasy. The only downside is they must use a lot of salt or MsG to make the flavors stand out because we all woke up super thirsty and dry that night. The service itself was a bit slow, other than the food timeliness they took a while to bring our drinks, take our orders, and check in on us despite the slow evening. I do wonder if they were short staffed as it was a random Monday evening so will give them the benefit of the doubt. This is a good alternative for dim sum if you're on the east side. I been here twice now with different people and can honestly say it's legit. I mostly tried their dim sum but they also have other main entree (mostly seafood). There's not cart service so you have to use a checklist to mark what you want. Some dishes are a hit while others are a miss but it's not bad. Prices are also reasonable as well. We ordered around 20 dim sum dishes and the price came out to be $176 (included tips and taxes). They do get busy so they require everyone together be present before you can get Seated. We got there right at 10 and there was already a few group waiting to enter. They are pretty fast in bringing food out as well as clearing the plates and bringing water. The variety of dim sum is pretty good, they are just missing a few items such as those crispy shrimp balls, or the jelly fish dish, or congee or tofu dessert . read more

We tried Royal Kitchen for the first time today. We were in the mood for dimsum, so we tried: eggplant stuffed with shrimp, fried taro, sesame balls (jin dui), pork siumai, pork soup dumplings, bbq pork pastry and maybe some other things. The Fried Taro was excellent--the best I've had in a long time and possibly ever. (We liked it so much, we got a second one). We also loved the pork siumai. The bbq pork pastry was nice--the pastry had a good texture and the filling was a little sweet, so it was almost a desert. We enjoyed the sesame balls--they were big and a beautiful golden brown, but slightly oily. In general, I'd say that their portions are generous, with a good amount of filling. The only dish we didn't care for was the soup dumplings. The wrapper was thick (I prefer it thin) and they are served on these aluminum foil muffin cups that look nice, but the dumplings stick to the cups, so they all broke when we tried to remove them. (However, we love the soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung and we haven't found any place else that makes them as good. The quality can also vary depending on which DTF you go to). The service was very good. The waiters were available. Most didn't speak English, but they quickly found someone who could when we had questions. Food came fast and empty dishes were removed quickly. Arriving at about 1:30pm on a Friday, there was plenty of tables available. They have a good-sized, L-shaped dining area. Several tables were were full of diners (I think all but us were Chinese--a good sign). The decor is nice, but not fancy. You feel like you are eating in a decent restaurant, not a takeout or $$$ place. I liked that it was quiet enough to have a conversation. First time visitor. They open at 10am. We came at 11am and got a seat pretty quickly. FYI you can only be added to their yelp waitlist at their kiosk. They require the full party to be here before seating you, which I see as a positive. Food arrives immediately after submitting order sheet (literally 10 seconds), meaning they have food already steamed and some fried dishes are already pre made. The steamed food is okay, anything with a deep fry element was disappointing. We finished our meal rather quickly. For a dim sum place, ambiance is fair and noise level is just below average. Only had Dim Dum and beef Chow Fun there. I'm from Guangdong where Dim Sum originated. Royal Kitchen dim sum is good for Seattle standard, but just okay if we are talking real dim sum. Pretty alright Cantonese food, but nothing spectacular. If you don't want to go all the way to International District, I would say this is probably one of the best Canto places on the Eastside. Portions are big and food isn't too pricey. Busy night with full house of reservations and walk in customers on Sunday... We were seated quickly to our table. Tea, water and ice were served promptly in this warm night. Food: -Daily soup was hot and quality like homemade soup. -Fresh roasted whole duck was yummy and plentiful for party of 5 and we have leftovers to take home with. -Steamed Live China Rock fish was steamed perfectly slightly off the bone and the soy sauce is not too salty or sweet. -Four season long beans were fresh, crispy and savory. However, my family prefers the flavored pork in minced version instead of small strips. Best of all, the dish was not as oily per the normal original recipe. -Sweet and Sour Pork Chop may be the weakest dish of all. The sauce is on the thicker side. -The fun thing of dining here is dim sum available all day. We added a steamed savory egg custard bun as a warm dessert to wrap up the meal with a sweet note. All in all, the service is on point. The restaurant is open, bright and airy. Thank you for the AC when it's still 80F+ in the evening. Free parking is very welcoming in my book. We ordered the shrimp roll, shrimp dumplings, pork dumpling, bbq bun, and fuzhou fried rice. The wrapping for the shrimp roll was weak. I ate several pieces where the shrimp was missing. The pork dumplings and shrimp dumplings feel pretty bland. The bbq bun has a lot of bun, not much bbq. The fried rice always feels a bit bland. This is THE place on the eastside for Cantonese/Yue/Guangdong style cuisine. I'm still drooling over their ginger & green onion/scallion fresh lobster and fresh Dungeness crab over egg noodles. Before they cook the dish, they bring over the live lobster/crab to show you which one you're getting. Make sure to ask them to add egg noodles underneath because the way they soak up all the flavors from the seafood makes them ultra delicious. There was a detectable level of lye in the noodles, but that did not stop us from inhaling the entire dish! I'm also a fan of their dried scallop and egg white fried rice. The dried scallops' fragrant flavor permeates throughout the dish, and the texture contrast from the crunch of the Chinese broccoli stems is delightful. Their stir-fried pea vines with garlic sauce were also quite tasty. The vegetables were tender and not overly fibrous like some other places. I like how they checked on us while we were devouring our seafood and swapped out our shell-filled plates with clean ones so that we had room to eat more. read more
