Oh, royal grinders. I am having withdrawals already even though I just left Seattle two days ago! I stumbled upon this sandwich shop while visiting the Fremont Troll. I am so glad I found this place. The toasted italian sub is one of the best thing I've ever tasted. It was heavenly! I never thought a sandwich could be so delicious! The gelato was great too, healthy and so yummy, many flavors to choose from. You get a small spoon sized gelato of your choice (they call it Lenny scoop) on top of your gelato cup. The staff are the best. They were so friendly! They have free water and free wifi. For such a small shop, they actually have a clean and functional bathroom too! I was also able to charge my iPhone when I ate there but forgot the charger at the shop. I called them later, they found it for me so I picked it up a few hours later. Wow! It's everything I want in a sandwich. Crusty bread with soft center. Just the right amount of ingredients. When you take a bite the sandwich filling doesn't gush out the other end. Chicken pesto- warm sandwich so yummy. Love everything about it but the olives because I'm not an olive person. I think next time I'll ask if I can add a slice of ham to it too. Don't let the no-frills look of this place fool you. These are the some of the best sandwiches you can get in Seattle. Hippies rejoice: it's not only located behind the huge statue of Lenin, but it's super vegan/vegetarian friendly too. My favorites are the Pesto Veggie grilled sandwich and the Field Roast Italian Veggie Sausage. They are scrumptious, the portions are good, and the prices are so reasonable. Absolutely my favorite sandwich shop in Seattle, and I feel like I've mapped out the top 4-5. I've been going here for seven years now, and I'm so glad that they survived the pandemic. They're just as good as they've always been (maybe even better?). I highly recommend ordering in advance and just picking up. I build my own grinder, but would recommend the Crown Grinder if you want a pre-made one. They offer truly excellent vegetarian options, too. Place is solid. Whenever I am downtown and need a good sub, I go here. Staff is very friendly, professional, recommends and fast. They are just very down to earth and always giving off positive energy. I always get the chicken pesto sandwich with a side of the combination sauce. The quality is consistent. The vibe is consistent. The shop looks like a "hole in the wall" but don't let that fool you into thinking this place is not good. They still have an excellent food rating. We had heard amazing things about place and were excited to try it out. I ordered the French Dip which was good but the meat seemed a little overcooked and salty to me (thus the three stars). I did like the hot toasted rolls/buns BTW. The other people in my party ordered sandwiches such as the Royal Grinder and Chicken Pesto Grinder which had the grinder sauce and they really liked them. The outside seating was, frankly, a little dirty. And there was no room inside the establishment. Overall, I found Royal Grinders to simply be "okay." I'd probably give them 3.5 stars if 1/2 stars were permitted. But since they are not, I'm rounding down to three stars. Tucked away in the corner of the triangle where the Lenin statue is, Royal Grinders is one of the best sandwich spots in the Seattle area. The shop itself is really small -- it's really more of a to-go spot, though there are some barstools inside and seats right outside in the courtyard. It's not a secret that you're going to have to wait a bit for your sandwich. They're really good sports and they acknowledge that their food takes a long time, but the food is really good so it's definitely worth the wait. Just know that if you're in a rush, this probably isn't the type of grab and go place you'd expect. Almost all their sandwiches come perfectly warm and toasted (which is why they take so long). They don't skimp on the meat and other fillings so for about $11, you're getting a great sandwich. Their menu options are all pretty good and varied, but the custom option is also a great addition and really makes sure that everyone gets something they want! I've been here about 5 times. After each Royal Grinders visit, I am left with a sandwich high. This is my go to food place whenever I give friends a tour of the amazing neighborhood that is Fremont. My usual routine is that I split a sandwich with a friend and then we both get gelato for ourselves. I have to say my favorite sandwich is the Italian. Everything about it is just so perfect. The bread is crisp on the outside and full and fluffy on the inside. My latest visit was a few months after I got braces and I was worried I'd have trouble eating hard bread. Nope. I was able to bite into that masterpiece of a sub with no problems. And the meat. Oh man... the meat. The toasted sala- hold on. Let me wipe my drool off the laptop. The toasted salami is so full of delicious fat and all that cheese. Oh man. And its like they know just how much pepperoncinis to put in. Simply put, it's a symphony of flavors. The greatest symphony you will ever eat. Ever. This is also the only place that makes Strawberry Jalapeno gelato that I know of. I had it on my very first visit and now I'm hooked onto that flavor combination. It's like a mystical creature... they only make it sometimes and I can never seem to come at the right time anymore! All of this is oven toasted in their soft but sturdy bread. It does take some time for the staff to make their sandwiches. If you're short on time, you can call your order ahead of time to pick up. So good!! I wasn't sure what to expect going in here, but the yelp reviews persuaded me. A small and cute little sandwich shop right in the heart of Fremont. The service was very kind, and helpful in assisting me. I ordered the roast beef one (forget the name), and I watched them prepare it cheerfully right before me. As they were finished, they presented me with their special red sauce on the side (which was amazing as well!). I devoured it right away, and literally would consider making the trip from Everett to Fremont simply to taste another one of those perfect warm toasty sandwiches. You'll also get a "Lenny" scoop of another flavour for free with your gelato. Why is it named Lenny? You only have to look at the massive statue of Lenin to figure that one out. There is a minimum charge for credit cards but no additional fees if you meet their requirement. They have a bathroom for customers located toward the back of the store. Whenever I'm in Seattle, I visit Royal Grinders. I made a point of not eating breakfast yesterday (Sunday, Feb 10) so there would be more room in my fat belly for a Crown Grinder. The reason I am writing an update, is because something cool happened when my girl and I walked in the door. We were informed that the employees had engaged in a dessert challenge of some sort and they had decided that we were going to participate and help to decide the winner. They gave us three spoons, we tried three different desserts, and then voted on our favorite. This was the first time I had been asked to participate in something like this. I'm sure it was just dumb luck, but it really says a lot about the type of people employed at Royal Grinders. Establishments like Royal Grinders are few and far between.
