We were in Vail for a quick trip out of town and a bartender at a nearby restaurant recommended this great spot! We were not disappointed! We intended to grab a quick drink, but quickly fell in love with the ambience (lighting, decor, music) and the owner and stayed til closing. It was a quiet night but stayed steady and the owner was very conversational and friendly with us as she made our drinks. I tried the Alpenglow first (amazing) and my boyfriend was impressed by the unique whiskey selection. We then saw others drinking fun drinks and the bartender told us they were gin infusions (one citrus and one floral). Both ended up being our favorite drinks there. What a great little wine bar that I happened upon with a good tasting menu. I was looking for some post ski snacks and drink. I walked into the Red Lion which were a zoo and had mostly what I'd classify as "bar food". I wanted something to eat of higher quality. I wandered around the village and noticed this place. I scanned the menu and immediately knew this place would be good. There was plenty of open seats, the environment was more quiet, and the bar tenders were very knowledge. I knew I was going to order the meat balls and they recommended a nice Malbec to go with it. The meatball appetizer presentation was beautiful and they were equally as delicious with a nice heat to them. I was only in Vail for a day, but next time I'm back Root & Flower is on my list to revisit. read more

This is the worst experience I have had at any business, ever. A friend of ours recommended Root & Flower for it's great cocktails. We arrived on a Tuesday night around 9pm, after the Hot Summer Nights concert nearby. I ordered a glass of wine, my friends both ordered specialty cocktails. We were expecting decadent drinks, but what we got was closer to dive bar rum and cokes. Bobby served the cocktails in plastic cup (although my chardonnay was served in an appropriate wine glass), which was shocking for $12 - $15 specialty cocktails. My friend asked about this, and the bartender went off the handle, violently yelling at us as he came towards us from behind the bar! No words can describe how horrified we were. He kept yelling about how many glasses get broken every night; and how he had planned to charge us 'only $10, but not if we're going to be ungrateful' (were we expected to assume this?); and that 'it's DJ night, what did we expect?' (we were unaware it was DJ night, and frankly didn't care, as we came for the supposedly amazing cocktails). Despite our efforts to defuse the situation (because at this point Bobby was causing a scene) by telling him to forget it, he continued to yell at us with so much rage. I've honestly never experienced something like that before in my life. I can't believe that the management employees such an unstable person. We immediately paid our tab and got out of there as quickly as possible. I will never return to Root & Flower, and will continue to warn my friends of the violence they are in store for if they mistakenly find themselves there. read more

A gem in Vail Village with outstanding fare and utterly delightful hosts. Oh my goodness, my family and I had a delightful evening. The menu is very interesting and is superbly executed. I had the Duck Rillete and I can tell you it was the best I have ever had. Others in the party had the gnocchi, the gazpacho and a couple of other items and it was all thumbs up. What was also very delightful was how accommodating the hosts were in dealings with my grandkids. The restaurant is small but their hearts are big! We will be back. read more

They will make you a double if you don't specify. I asked for a Yamazaki 12 and the bartender made me a double, charged me $38 without asking if I wanted a double. This was the first time I tried this single malt, so I thought Yamazaki is probably expensive whisky. A few minutes later my buddy asked for a Yamazaki, he got served a single by another bartender for half the price. As far as I remember, when a customer wants a double, he will specifically ask for a double. Every establishment that serves alcohol should know this protocol.. We have been coming to vail for years with our family. This was the first time dinning at Root & Flower and the experience was abismal. Ambiance and drinks were ok, the food was average as well. The bar food menu is very small and does not have alot options. Definetly not a place if you are hungry. This place is definetly not kid friendly so think twice if you have a family. The co-owner of the restaurant named Samantha was extremly rude and agressive. Granted we ordered everything on the menu and my 3 yr old son was still hungry since he did not like anything, to avoid my child from dying from hunger my husband bought a pizza from next door. the owner pretty much told me that it was against the law to bring food from other restaurants. I apologized a couple of times but she continue to argue the point. I was hoping she would understand but apparently it was more important to yell at me in front of the whole restaurant. Our party spent $500 dlls and they treated us like they were doing us a favor. Very dissapointed as this was not in season and the restaurant had been empty up until we got there. read more

I love this place! It's new and fresh; the wine selection is great and changes every few weeks. You can get 3 or 6 oz. pours and try several :) The menu also changes regularly and the food is awesome. You can get a few small plates or entrees. We had the cheese plate which came with nice condiments such as a fig curry jam - yum! We also had the meatballs (delicious) and the gnocchi (a little on the small side for an entree but very good). We arrived in Vail and were lucky enough to find this place and walk in for an early "light" dinner of tapas. The waitress was super nice, knew her wines, and I learned a bit about which glass for which red wine. Their passion for what they do shows in every detail. As I mentioned to Jeremy last night, he's a bit of a minor celebrity in the sweet village of Vail. You don't earn that without doing something, or a lot, right. Root & Flower has the feel of a business that could evolve into a hugely successful multi-location business if not franchise.
