Fast forward to this latest visit home. I finally secured a reservation...but then late yesterday afternoon my mom's knee started acting up to the point where she could barely stand on it. Fortunately, ice, Advil and rest overnight--and my mom really, really wanting to come here--kept us on track, and tonight I finally made it. It's a cozy spot, and I can see it making an excellent date night, especially since the BYOB setup allows you to bring the wine of your choice (and save some $$). We were seated promptly--this Sunday was relatively mellow--and the servers were super accommodating about removing a chair so that my mom's walker could occupy the unused space on our four-top. The menu is what I call right-sized. It may seem smallish, but there is a strategic assortment of salads and apps, pastas and mains (and, of course, desserts) that is sure to accommodate everyone. Dean, the young man who would go on to do an outstanding job taking care of us for the night (with the other two servers chipping in seamlessly as needed), went through the specials. My mom was particularly intrigued by a squid-ink fettucine with lobster and shrimp (and cherry tomatoes) in a saffron cream sauce. Could we split it as an app, we asked? Would it be too much food? On Dean's advice, we went ahead, while my dad got the mussels. All three of us ordered the pork chop, which my parents have been raving about for a couple years now. How could I not try it? Ordering finished, bread and olive oil (with a bit of balsamic) arrived at the table. Knowing I had a pasta coming and that the pork chop was a good-sized portion, I didn't want to overdo it, which I think was ultimately a good choice. The bread took the edge off, and then the pasta arrived. It was just the right amount for two people to share as an app, and we both enjoyed it, while my dad loved his mussels (and then dunked lots of his bread in it). Then came the main event. The pork chop lived up to (and frankly, exceeded) the hype. It was tender and perfectly cooked and oh-so-flavorful. Definitely one of the best I've ever eaten, and this isn't my first pork-chop rodeo. It was accompanied by asparagus and yummy baby Yukon Gold potatoes; I left a view of the latter, not because they weren't yummy but rather because the pork chop was huge and I was not skipping dessert. For dessert, I went with the house-made cannoli, which was a lovely, sweet (but not oversweet) ending to an excellent meal. I'd be happy to come back to Burrata anytime.

Several months before my wedding, I personally came to the restaurant to make sure I would be able to reserve a table for 12 in the main dining room near the fireplace. I spoke with a dark-haired woman who told me that was totally fine, and she made the reservation for me. I knew that others would be at smaller tables in the room, and I was fine with that. La Porta is a special place where my fiancé and I have spent many lovely dinners together. It was really important to me that our intimate reception be somewhere I already loved, in a space that felt like me. I love the plaster walls, the wood features, the low light, the fireplace--that space is really special to me. La Porta's food is good, but Italian isn't my favorite cuisine. I chose to have my reception at La Porta for this space specifically. I would never want to have my wedding reception on a patio with plastic covering, which is why I came in months ahead of time and made those arrangements so carefully. When we arrived on Saturday, my party was made to sit on the patio. I spoke with our main waiter, a man I had seen at the restaurant before, about what had happened. He was dismissive and said, "Well, it wasn't in the notes. There's nothing I can do about it now." He didn't even say I'm sorry, and he acted annoyed. Angry isn't really the right word for how I felt. I was hurt. This was my wedding, one of the most important days of my life, and I wasn't able to have the reception in the space I had specifically booked and planned for. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. The mistake itself was upsetting, but what hurt even more was how the waiter handled it. On a day when I should have felt celebrated and cared for, I instead felt like my disappointment was an inconvenience. It would have meant so much to hear something as simple as, "I'm really sorry this happened. It shouldn't have. Let me get some appetizers for the table while we get you settled." Some acknowledgment that something important to me had gone wrong would have gone a long way. This is the hospitality industry, but I didn't feel treated with hospitality at all. I would never treat anyone the way I was treated that day, as a bride. After that conversation, it was another 30 minutes before our order was even taken. I had my children and family there waiting, but honestly, that part was a minor inconvenience compared with how the situation made me feel. We were supposed to cut our wedding cake there and continue celebrating, but by the end of the meal, I decided to take the cake home. I was simply too upset and disappointed to stay there any longer. I'm sharing this because the experience genuinely affected what should have been a very special part of my wedding day. I'm not asking for anything in return. I just want to share what happened and how it was handled.

We both ended up ordering the eggplant caponata, which was well made, but it was surpassed by the potato croquette - crispy outside and very soft inside. My wife loved the snapper, and I loved the crabcakes. The perfect crabcake should have good flavor and just enough binder to hold it together without turning into a hockey puck. These hit the nail on the head, and came with a bit of a cream sauce drizzled on top. It was a nice contrast to the fried crabcakes. For dessert, we had the tiramisu. They were so filling that we could have split one, but I wasn't eager to share mine (I kept digging in, despite being full), so it's probably good that we each had our own. We were favorably impressed by Sopra. It's above Tony's other restaurant, On a Roll, which is a gourmet lunch spot (sandwiches, burgers, fish, etc. with ingredients made from scratch). On a Roll draws a good lunch crowd, but the space turns into something different entirely at dinnertime - the downstairs closes and you go directly upstairs from the entrance to Sopra. Don't go to Sopra expecting the lunch menu! The prices reflect the quality of the food. It's BYOB, and next time, we'll remember to bring wine. It was an amorosa type roll, sliced and toasted and buttered. Not my idea of good Italian bread to eat with dinner. Then everything was served at room temperature, except for one salmon which was reported as good. We had a large party of 10, but we are frequent diners, and it is a rarity for everyone's food to be served cold. The crab cakes were not good, they were big, and lightly breaded, and I think maybe processed frozen, not homemade. There was a lot of filler, no discernable crab meat, the sauce on top was good. The potato croquette is gross. I did not order the snapper because when the menu says the fish is simmered in a sauce, I automatically think overcooked fish. I was right, I tasted it, and it was chewy and overcooked. I tasted the filet mignon, it was weird, not cooked as ordered, and seemed mushy. The ricotta cheese cake was watery. People didn't even take home their leftovers, it was so bad. There is stiff competition for good Italian in Media with Spassos and Fellinis. This place will have to step up their game a lot to survive. I am hoping for the best.

Our pear and Gorgonzola salad would have been bland but the Gorgonzola in the poached pear was the star of the show. The salad itself was also small for the price. I ordered the scampi with wild shrimp and crab cake and asked for the spice level to be turned up. Thankfully it was and was delicious and full of flavor. The house-made pasta which was part of the dish was a treat as well. My husband said his Chicken Milanese was just okay and not really exciting. He only ate one piece of the chicken. He did get an extra side of pasta, though, which he enjoyed. I had to order the affogato which did not disappoint. Our server poured the espresso over the vanilla ice cream at our table. Yum!
