My go to Thai place. Friendly staff and incredible food, I always start with the crab delights, which are balls of cream cheese wrapped in a wonton pocket, the sauce they serve this with is the perfect companion. Normally I get the cashew fried rice with tofu. Let me tell you, I was not particularly fond of tofu before I tried this dish. Rom Mai's tofu is perfectly seasoned and fried golden, they taste almost buttery and perfectly crispy on the outside. Also some of the better Thai tea I've had on the hill. I love this restaurant! It holds a very special place in my heart, not just for the amazing food that always meets or exceeds my expectations, but for the many times over the years I went to lunch there with my late Dad. It was "our" place- we planned trips, caught up with life, even had Christmas dinner there one year. The staff is always attentive, but not overbearing, friendly, and courteous. Their lunch specials are the perfect amount at a very reasonable price. My go-to dish is the Cashew Chicken, and my Dad's favorite was Garlic Chicken. Swimming Rama, Ginger Chicken, and Panang Curry are some other winners, but you really can't go wrong! One of my best Thai experiences in Seattle. Lots of hit and miss tourist Thai food around the city. I have eaten in Thailand and have had several home cooked Thai meals from my fathers wife. The thing they cant get right at most tourist shops are the noodle dishes. This place makes the noodle dishes not to wet and sloppy as it should be. More fish oil than water. The place is legit and can get red pepper spice levels right if you like hot stuff. I mostly get it delivered on Uber Eats - the consistence in quality is almost perfect across around 30 different orders over the last few years. Give it a shot in Capitol Hill - also they have a nice large dining room. My fav combination is an order of crab delight and the special crispy garlic chicken with max red pepper spice. read more

Ordered take out on a Tuesday night. Everything was ready within 15 minutes and the portions are not bad either. Amazing Tofu Pad Thai and Chicken Pad See Ewe. Both had amazing flavor and are more on the sweeter side (which I like). The Pad See Ewe had lots of sauce which is super optimal but the fried tofu chunks in the Pad Thai were toooooo huge. I met a friend here for dinner on their recommendation and while the reviews were ok, I was not really impressed. The service was just fine, although they didn't seem to focus on what I was saying they at least got the order correct. The food was just "ok" it certainly wasn't anything write home about. I ordered the Massaman Curry with chicken and when she asked how spicy I said "10 Thai" and she insisted that I choose a number between 1 and 5, she didn't understand that I wanted it spicy... Which, of course when it showed up it wasn't spicy and you could tell they just dumped extra red chili flakes in it which is not really authentic or spicy. While the flavors were ok, the chicken looked boiled prior to being put in the curry and overall it was very runny. When she asked if I wanted white or brown rice, she never mentioned they charge for rice, which is ridiculous. I did get rice, which is a good thing, I needed something to soak up the extra runny liquid but really, you charge for your rice? The food was decent and the waiter was at our table fairly frequently asking if everything was good, getting us water, etc. the phad Thai was good but could use a little bit more sauce. It had a dryness that broke apart the noodles pretty frequently. That being said spice and spices were pretty good. My partner and I used to make Rom Mai Thai a date spot every month or two, it's got great ambiance, polite and helpful staff, and damn good thai food for really reasonable prices. Recently (since covid) it's become our go-to takeout/delivery spot. We get food from here every week and it never disappoints (the pad see ew & pad kee mao are our favs), the food is fresh and delicious and the portions are always big enough that I can save some food for lunch the next day. The thai tea & coffee are also incredible, and overall this place is just a complete gem whether you're eating in or dining out. I can't express enough how much we love this place. I have read the numerous reviews on Rom Mai Thai. All of which convinced me to walk 15 minutes down broadway to try some of their food. I chose pad thai. Maybe it was the wrong choice...but honestly, I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected to. I can't explain it, but it just wasn't amazing. It was edible. It was decent. But it wasn't amazing as I would have been led to believe after reading all of the wonderful reviews on yelp. Maybe I ordered the wrong item...it seems the pad see ew is the all time fave...but I was craving pad thai at the time so that's what I went with. I ordered pad see ew Thai dish at 3/4 stars spiciness. Which means three out of four heat level. 4 should be so freaking hot that it's the highest possible number on the scale. Four is the highest you can go on the scale. So therefore three should be 75% of that which is very hot. This dish did not have any heat to it whatsoever. The actual food was so-so. Nothing to write home about, for sure. I probably won't go again. I was having major red curry craving and came to Rom Mai Thai to satisfy those cravings. As others have noted, you definitely get a lot of food for your money, but the food itself was just ok. The red curry was definitely more on the watery side and I expect red curry to have those strong, complex spice flavors. The curry came with veggies (ie. cabbage--which I don't get why some restaurants put cabbage in their curry, carrots, broccoli), which seemed to be steamed just before being added to the curry mixture. Ordered the lunch Combo A: Pad Thai with red curry, fresh spring roll, and soup. The Pad Thai was a very small portion, fairly bland, especially considering it was 3/4 spicy. Not much chicken to speak of, maybe a couple small pieces. Definitely noticed a little bit of a ketchup flavor, which I'm not a fan of. The curry was without chicken, which I'm not sure was specified on the menu? Also pretty bland. The Spring roll was bland, as was the soup. Great Thai food! Their food is slightly different then your regular Thai fare. Their curries are lighter and not as thick and heavy as a lot of Thai restaurants. Their customer service is hardcore, they are all about you being taken care off. Your water glass would not get empty even if you chugged it. They usually do not have much of a wait, and the food comes out in quick manor. Only awkward part is their Pad Thai. It comes out super thick and more like an omelette. The service was excellent. There servers were friendly and courteous. I wish the food just tasted better. I ordered the fresh Spring Roll with Tofu and it was good... My main course however was a bit mushy. I ordered the PAD KEE MAO which the noodles were so mushed up and battered into bits they weren't recognizable (I was about to ask if there were even noodles in the dish but upon further inspection I saw that they were completely macerated hence why I didn't recognize them). The size was a bit on the small side as well. The taste/flavour was good though. I did like the fact that they were able to take ingredients out that I was allergic to. The server did ask me how hot I wanted it and I said I wanted it pretty hot, when it got to the table it was pretty mild (sad). They also do not have Sriracha another sad moment...I should bring my own. If I was desperate I may come back here but it is nothing to write home about. read more

The chicken dumplings had zero flavor and were missing at least two of the ingredients listed on the menu. Been back here twice since my last review. The first time I really wanted something with broth. The roasted duck noodle soup caught my eye. People. It's the best thing I've ever tasted in my life. EVER. Did you hear me?! The broth was flavorful, a delicate array of spices, vegetables, and succulent chunks of roast duck. If I could only eat one dish every day for the rest of my life - this is it. Hands down. They also serve it with a ring of fire, an assortment of condiments so you can add the type and intensity of heat and spice you'd like in addition to what you ordered from the kitchen. I'm going to give up two because they have brown rice and they deliver, and they were very, very, very nice people - but WTF with the full can of bamboo shoots and like TWO pieces of broccoli in my food??? I do not love bamboo shoots; they are like the celery of Thai food, filler - nothing more. BLECH. I have been to Thailand and I saw NARY A SHOOT THERE. Silky smooth soup, with lovely swirls of chili oils, meaty mushrooms, tender chicken, hints of ginger and lime, perfectly warmly spiced for a cool evening....It was a welcome surprise at the end of a long day with no food. I do love surprises when a thoughtful person remembers that you haven't eaten, and you might like wine, and some wonderful company...but it would have been surprisingly great even if I was sitting on a bench eating in the cold. I spent at least 5 minutes last night quizzing my best friend about where on the Hill we should go for a late dinner, all while sitting 5 feet from a computer where I was logged into Yelp. *face palm* He suggested Thai. He suggested Rom Mai. I finally came to my senses and checked the Yelp reviews only to see my other bff's 5 star review smack dab at the top as the "Selected Review"....It was meant to be. As far as I'm concerned, it was perfect for a rainy Seattle summer night. We had barely opened the door before we were heartily greeted and quickly ushered to a table near the front windows. From that point forward service was friendly and fast and attentive, yet not overbearing. My Chicken Broccoli was sooooo tasty and the brown rice we decided on to accompany our meals was a perfect texture. My only "beef" is that I LOVE hot/spicy foods, but having never been here before went with 3 stars to be safe. If you like it hot - go 4. And add more chilis. The gentleman who seemed to be running the show was extremely nice and helpful from beginning to end and made sure to tell us that we were welcome back anytime (preferably sooner than later, I guess). I'm a pretty big Thai food fan. This place is on the way from my work back home, so sometimes I stop by to pick up takeout dinner. It's not my favorite Thai place, but it definitely does the job when I'm craving. They use delicious, meaty chunks of chicken in their chicken pad Thai, unlike some other places. Unfortunately, the dish veers toward bland unless you get a star or two (of spice) above what you might order somewhere else. The main letdown of Rom Mai is there crab delight. The weird, kitschy, Americanized Thai dish can be so satisfying, but theirs often feels like a fried sack of cream cheese and herbs, with hardly any crab/imitation crab meat to be seen. My main issue is that this place is more expensive, but not as tasty, as many of the other Thai places in the area. Unless it's the only convenient/open place, I'll probably opt for somewhere else. read more

Pad thai to-go please! After a long day, I phone Rom Thai for a order of Pad-Thai, one of their many curries (like Panang & Duck), and a side of rice to-go. I pick it up on my way home and devour immediately upon arrival. Drop my books, kick off my shoes, and streamline to the couch. What can I say? The food is delicious and never fails to appease my thai-food cravings. However, like all the other yelpers have already mentioned, their portions are dinky. I've had a chance to enjoy all this thai-food deliciousness at the restaurant itself and I must agree, that the servers were all over our table, food, plates - "How's everything? How's the food? Got everything you need? More water for you sir? How about you? May I answer any questions? May I take your order?" Someone already did! Ack! Get off our nuts! Over-friendly aside, they are super nice and informative and I am impressed by the knowledge, manners, and etiquette that Rom Thai Servers possess. I have been coming here for close to ten years, ever since my friend accidentally fed me pork (I didn't eat it) and he made up for it by bring everyone here later, only permitting vegetatian dishes be served! They make the best tofu in town! I'm so glad he introduced me to his favorite thai restaurant that day! I bring my mom here when she visits and she totally loves the chicken phad thai. One thing I can't stand about some Yelp reviewers is there two cents on "Authentic" "Ohhhh, this is sooooo authentic it's like grandma's" or "This isn't authentic at all! Tastes like a tv dinner!" Shat Up! Well, the point I'm driving to is that this place is just damn good. Authentic or not, who cares! This place blows my mind every time I dine here! I have tried a lot of their entrees and appetizers and I have never once been disappointed. Now I'm a hot head for some serious spice, and this is one of the few places where they understand I want it "Thai hot!" I love it! My personal recommendations: Appetizers: Thai Spring Rolls Thai Fresh Rolls Chicken Satay Soups: Any of the Tom Kah options, my personal favorite is with Tofu and a spicy level of 5 or 6. Mmmm. Chicken Dishes: Swimming Rama Chicken Chicken Delight Beef Dishes: Spicy Beef (again with the spice!) Garlic Beef (order extra crispy and with some basil!) Curry: Honestly... all of the above! :] *Note... I've never had the duck because I'm not a fan of the meat. Rice + Noodles: All the fried rice dishes were delightful. Pad See-ew is probably my most frequented dish. I order it extra crispy and with a lot of heat. Just can't get enough of these bold flavors. As for dessert, I just don't have room most of the time.
