My fiancé & I took our good friend here for her Birthday (yesterday). Three of us, two appetizers and three entrees = $54.41!! Appetizers: 4 Spring Rolls & 6 Fried Chicken Dumplings. Both came with what tasted like a sweet & Sour sauce. Entrees: Kee Mao Noodle (Stir-fried wide flat rice noodles with prawns, chili sauce, mixed veggies, onions, bell peppers, and sweet Thai basil leaves).... Salmon Curry (Salmon fillet stake cooked in a rich and flavorful curry sauce with sweet Thai basil leaves, and bell peppers)....Red Curry (Choice of chicken, pork, tofu, or [beef or prawns $ 1.00 extra] cooked with red curry paste, coconut milk, bamboo shoots, mixed vegetables and sweet Thai basil leaves). Bottom line, the amount of food that we got for the price was surprising. And it all tasted heavenly. The service was beyond measure. The men who work there are very respectful. We had the owner (I think) sit us down and one of the younger guys wait on us. He was extremely patient. We tried to make up our minds, but I'm telling you they have a large variety of food, it made it difficult for us to order right away. I read many reviews that don't give pad thai credit for its possible nuanced taste. I've noticed it either tips on the side of fishy or ketchupy depending where you go. Perhaps the worst Thai food I've had in Seattle, It definitely wasn't gross, slimy or greasy -it just tasted vinegary and bad. Maybe, they just got bad recently although many recent reviews I saw on Yelp agreed with me that the food sucks. I'd like to say I'll try them again, but I have doubts. There are so many great Thai restos in town, why should I bother? I love this place. I used to live close to it, so I ate there all the time. Now I don't, and I wish I did. I live by another Thai place, and it's awful and I don't ever want to go there. I love Thai food, and I've eaten Thai food in a great many places, (Although never Thailand... alas!!) The Panang curry is amazing. The Mussaman curry is incredible. You can also order as spicy as you want: you're into 8 stars instead of 10: cool. You want 75 stars? Yup. Hang onto your butt. Soooo, the reviews on this place are pretty generous. The ambience is nice & the service reasonably attentive, but as for the food... I'll respectfully disagree w all the stars. We had the crab/cream cheese wontons & pad Thai w chicken & tofu. The wontons were devoid of crab. I mean ZERO crab, crab flavor...even a hint of crab. This is my go to place whenever my friend and I crave Thai food. Food is inexpensive and very tasty. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Our usual orders are Chicken Delight, Fresh Rolls, some sort ofGarlic stir fry, and sometimes Tom Ka Gai with rice. It's always filling and we leave the restaurant satisfied. Probably the best Thai food I've had in Seattle up to this day. Usually I would have gone to pinto's Thai food just a few businesses down but i decided maybe we should try this place. The service was great, the owner was really nice and made us feel very welcome always checking up on us and making sure everything's alright. When you enter the restaurant you get a wonderful jasmine scent and beautiful Thailand decor. The food was spectacular and very filling! I ordered the "E" combo on the lunch menu which included Pad Thai noodles, chicken, rice and spring rolls. It was really yummy and the chicken was seasoned to perfection! This is one of my new favorite restaurants. Why, you ask? (1) The service is a model of good restaurant service. The people are friendly, helpful, make great suggestions, all with an honest kindness - no pinched smiles here. (2) The food is very good - of the four dishes I have sampled so far, the only one that underwhelmed me was the Pad Thai - It was still good, but my expectations were a bit too high. It was still better than the majority of places I have had Pad Thai (3) Pleasant open feeling in the restaurant. Not garish, not overdesigned, warm and humble. (4) Location - great spot on the Hill. (5) The Young Coconut Curry - supposedly this is a special item, but my friend had had it before and we asked about it. The waiter said they would make it for us, without hesitation. It was sooo delicioous, quite spicy, very beautiful (served in the shell of the young coconut), and, I think addictive. I can't wait to have it again. I would say that the foods were A-OK but not that succulent or delicious as a good Thai restaurant should be. Pretty much this place qualifies as OK on a regular basis an good if you're drunk and in need of some Thai or spicy food cures late at night. They should've made their food fresher with a lime or lemon garnishes added on the side to kill the deadness of their food. Oh wait, is that an oxymoron? Had the Pad Thai and the Pad Kee something which translates to stir fried big spicy Thai rice noodles in a slight curry sauce with vegetables, and the other dish being a beef vegetables stir fry with rice. They weren't great just doable and wasn't as fresh as I wanted. Where in Capitol Hill can you find a delicious food restaurant where they serve stuff on a 5 stars scale anyways? I love the food here. I have never been let down. Special requests are not sneered at or frowned upon, which in most places I've found to be hit or miss. I have brought many a family and friends here to my favorite Thai restaurant on the Hill. Very friendly wait staff, super quick food, and picking up take out is always ready and hot. However, if you dine in, you will never finish a glass of water because the moment you take a drink, someone is there filling it up. Not a bad thing, pretty amusing actually. Sometimes I think they ask how you are doing a few too many times during the meal and are almost waiting for you to put down your water glass. All in all, I really love everything about this place. This restaurant was recommended to be by a fellow Thai aficionado who raved about the food here. I suppose it's because of my own high expectations- not the actual quality of the food -that I was disappointed, which is a shame, because it IS very good, just not to the degree of what I was expecting. Their lunch specials are very affordable (and massive), and really run the gambit on what is offered with each plate. I got some Miso soup, a fresh roll, pad thai and vegetable red curry. Nothing stood out as spectacular, but it was all very clean, tasty and satisfying. Really, my only complaint was that it had nothing that could be considered exclusive to this restaurant in terms of flavor or quality. However, I do have to give accolades to the atmosphere and the service. Both are exceptional. The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous, clean and well thought-out, and the waitstaff is exceptionally fast, friendly, and competent. Overall, I enjoyed dining here, and I'd definitely say check it out for lunch if you want a nice place to enjoy some standard but tasty Thai food. WHY DOES THIS PLACE HAVE SUCH HIGH RATINGS??? I was excited to try as Yelpers seem to love it here, and from the prices, I expected absolute bliss. As soon as I saw the cheap ice berg lettuce in the grilled beef salad, I knew I was in trouble. I pretty much picked the meat out and tossed it in the trash. Incidentally, the meat was second rate and bland. Not what I expected for the money. The black sticky rice was awful too, hard under cooked rice ruined one of my favorite desserts, and the satay was blah. Thirty five bucks for extreme disappointment and my faith shaken in Yelp. There Supreme Hor Mok is extremely delicious. Try it with sticky rice. They also started serving lunch combos which usually includes a soup, an appetizer, noodle, a curry and rice. I went to Rom MAI Thai in Capitol Hill when my sister and I were visiting Seattle in August. We were just checking out the neighborhoods and decided to stop for some lunch. We originally saw a Thai restaurant a few blocks back (towards Pine St.) but decided to look for something that was more unique and not a chain restaurant. That is when we stumbled upon Rom MAI and decided it looked like the perfect place to grab a bite. We were greeted with warm smiles and a friendly hello and were seated right away. Needing only a brief moment to glaze over the menu, we both decided their lunch special would be ideal. I ordered the Pad Thai and steamed vegetable plate. The meal came with fresh spring rolls and rice as well. WOW I was not disappointed to say the least. Great food and very great service. The Pad Thai was exquisite and has me craving it still to this day. The rice, vegetables and spring rolls were all top class as well. The waiter was very friendly and chatted with us about our travels to the city and was very welcoming. I would recommend this place to anybody going to Seattle!! read more

Yummy! It is becoming my regular place for Thai on the hill. The portions are large enough that I never leave hungry and even have leftovers to take home. The prices are decent, and they have great lunch specials too. The staff is super nice and they do a great job at keeping your glass filled. The waiters can be quite chatty, but it can be fun talking to them. The restaurant has a roomy feel and has quite a bit of seating. We've liked all the curries we have had there. Panang is our favorite...it is very rich and has lots of flavor. The spiciness level here is on the lower side, and I can comfortably order one star higher than my normal. I recently tried the garlic pork, and that was really good too. For lunch, the specials come with soup and a choice of 2 entrees. We've also liked the swimming rama lunch portion. read more

I went to Rom Mai Thai yesterday (01/30). The restaurant has a nice vibe to it and is a good place to pop in and out for Thai food. The only problem with the restaurant was the food. And yes, that is kind of a big problem when it comes to eating dinner. So what was the problem? I ordered a Tofu dish (kam fee or something) with mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, garlic, etc. (all the ingredients I enjoy in my meal) but it came out very bland. From the first bite I could tell that it had a weird taste that I was not interested in. It was very watery. I suppose that is the best way to describe it. In other words, the stir-fried dish was covered in a large amount of sauce but unfortunately the flavor was quite week and the spicyness overpowered the taste. I enjoy Thai food a lot. I eat it more frequently than any other meal. For this reason I believe I have a good sense of what is good and what is not. I would not go back to Rom Mai Thai. Take that however you want to. My boyfriend and I ate here one wet, wintery evening and were a little bit weirded out. Let's start with the service. We were by no means the only customers in the restaurant. Still, we had every waiter available deliver our food, (repeatedly) fill our water glasses and start conversations with us. We were looking for a semi-romantic night out, but the two of us felt so much on display that we were uncomfortable talking. And they took away our plates before we were finished. To be fair, I'm a fairly low-maintenance diner and prefer the European standard of service: to disappear until summoned. As for the food, the Thai fresh rolls were pretty good, could have used more tofu or lettuce and fewer noodles. I ordered the Prik King Tofu. The waitress upped the spice level from what I originally requested. Unfortunately, the spice overtook the flavor of the dish (I guess that's why they refill the water glasses). I also found the dish too oily. I envied my boyfriend's baby corns. And they charged separately for the rice. The up-side is, of all the Thai dinners I've had thus far in Seattle, this is the only one I didn't finish in one sitting. read more

ROM MAI THAI is EXCELLENT! Always good, always - always. I don't understand Yelp reviews. I really don't. We have been going to this place consistenly for the 7 years we have lived on Harvard Ave. We go in, order delivery, etc. It is ALWAYS good. ALWAYS. I have Thai relatives, they love it. The place is adorable, the people are SO nice and the food is just always great. We have been doing take out and delivery more with small children, and it never disappoints. I actually was looking at reviews on yelp for a new Chinese place and thought wow this must blow based on the reviews. Then I thought, hmmm maybe I should look at a place I KNOW is great and see what Yelp says. I should not have been surprised that Rom Mai Thai was all over the map too - when I know for a fact as a patron (no relation to the staff or investor in the place) that the food is FABULOUS. I get Thai Coffees a lot and we walk by with our kids and they always remember us, wave and sometimes will come out to ask me if I want a Thai coffee since they know i love them. I think I will avoid Yelp reviews, but thought I must post on their behalf as one of my most fav places in our hood which the nicest people in a restaurant I have enountered in ages. One of our neighborhood haunts...great Thai food. The staff is a little hovery and they have a tendency to stand in the corner and stare at you, waiting to pick up plates as soon as you set them down and filling your water glass after every sip, but mostly friendly. My wife and we're visiting from Bend OR, staying @ the Paramount Hotel. Through word of mouth we walked to this quaint little Thai Restaurant. We ordered the Papaya salad, the yellow curry, and the green curry. The curries were very flavor full, and delightful. The Papaya salad reminded me of the first time I had this dish in an Asian market of San Francisco, delish... The service was friendly, and attending. Not being the greatest of Thai fans, I was yet to explore the Thai population on Capitol Hill (even in two years time). But last night I had one of those insatiable cravings that I HAD to satisfy. Strangely enough, it was for Thai food. I asked a buddy the name of a Thai place that I remembered him raving about a few months back. He gave me Rom Mai, but said that he was more partial to Siam. Who did I turn to? My trusty Yelppers. Rom Thai came in with a shining four stars. And after reading the reviews, I was sold. We couldn't resist the appetizers. I had the spring rolls (deep fried goodness...shhh!) and my girlfriend had the deep fried tofu. Both were magnificent (and I don't even like tofu, but I just HAD to take another bite...and another...and another...). After devouring both plates, we picked out three main dishes to stuff our faces with. Yellow Curry (chicken - 3 star): Not a curry lover, but this was just about perfect. Noodle Kee Mao (chicken - 4 star): Amazing. Hands down the best kee mao I've ever had. Definitely could have gone with 5 stars though. Pad Thai (chicken - 3 stars): Delish. But oddly enough, it was a whole lot of spice packed into those 3 stars. I was dying for a glass of milk after just a couple bites. My water glass was never empty, three people immediately cleaned off our table when we were finished, we were never left waiting for anything (not even our bill), and best of all, we've got two meal's worth of leftovers. And let me tell you, after a few solid months of the curse of terrible service, it was quite refreshing to relax in such a cozy and welcoming Thai joint. Thanks Rom Mai Thai. read more

Rom Mai Thai is one of my favorites, and when my girlfriend were walking by the other day and saw it boarded up we were shocked. "No! Damn the recession!!!" But it was only undergoing renovations. You can still order take out and delivery at the moment. The food is great and if you go during lunch they give you a little bowl of soup which makes me very happy. Some dishes that are my favorites: Pad Thai, Pad see Eew, Thai Beef Salad(There are two versions apparently, and the one that's not authentic, with lettuce, is the one I Like and the other version has cabbage leaves). The curries are a good mix between creamy flavor and spice. The only problem, as with all Thai places is the Spiciness inconsistency. I always get 2 out of 5, and its sometimes not spicy at all, and sometimes too hot, but I can handle that, while my girlfriend cannot. The service Always brighten my day. Seriously, I go here sometimes because they are so nice. If I order take out and wait by the door, I still get a glass of ice water for my wait. They always ask how my day is going, and talk to me like an old friend. When eating in, they can be overly friendly and that's what some of my friends find off. A friend went there on a date and when i asked them about it they thought they were hassled about ordering rice and to many water refills. So if you want the service to stay out of your way, don't come here. But this is the reason That this place has so many dedicated fans. I'm going there the week they open up again. read more

I have been going to Rom Mai for over 3 years; there food is amazing and they are willing to make whatever changes/substitutions you desire. I am welcomed whenever I go in by my name, my favorites are memorized, and I have actual talks with the people there not just the generic how are you small talk. I also love them for delivery, they can be a little bit slow sometimes if you call during dinner time generally just in the winter when the weather is crappy and no one wants to leave their apartment. In the world of delivery a lot can go wrong, throughout all my years there I've only had one problem and when I called them back about it they gave me a credit for my next meal that I could use whenever. I wasn't sure if they would remember it but they did and I used it a few months later. I would recommend them to anyone who wanted good food and amazing service. read more

I lived down the street from this place and ate there once a week for a couple of years. The food is generally very good and authentic (they serve real Mien Kham!). In my opinion, it's the best Thai food in capitol hill. They have good Panang Curry. The service is great if you love being waiting on hand and foot. If you'd rather chill out without someone constantly watching your every move, the service may feel a bit intrusive. I'll admit that the food can be a bit inconsistent. I LOVE this place! We had a HORRIBLE lunch experience at a restaurant downtown the day before, so we decided to head up to Capitol Hill for some Thai food... We found this place tucked away at the end of Broadway.... AMAZING!!! The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive and the decor is authentic and interesting. We had fresh rolls with Tofu which were awesome. Our appetizers came out fast and were paced well with our entrees. The prices here are very good especially for such high quality of food.
