Rolling Pin for the win! Nothing like fresh warm doughnuts! We went on a Thursday night at 8pm and the chocolate chip roll was getting frosted as we stood in line. It does not get any fresher than that! We got our favorites which are the chocolate chip roll, tiger tail, blueberry cake, buttermilk bar, and maple bar. The chocolate chip roll is huge and so rich and chocolatey. I personally like it better at night as dessert than in the morning for breakfast. The tiger tail is also a top favorite of ours. Five years later, from my previous review, Rolling Pin continues to serve up thee best buttermilk donut holes in Ventura County. I still love the crumb and glazed ones. So delicious. Donuts were freshly made, had to wait about 5 minutes, but good things always come with patience. After I arrived, line started to form -but of course, with mindful CoVID social distancing in full effect. I did pick up a couple cronuts (half croissant, half donut texture) to sample. Remember these? Tried a piece of the caramel and cream filled. Both not too overwhelmingly sweet and had the nice slight flakiness to its texture. Taking it back old school...Not gonna lie, when I worked in Camarillo forever ago I used to drive by Rolling Pin a good amount of times but they were just never seemed to be opened or it wasn't a good time for me to stop. Finally got my chance last night. The selection wasn't tremendous but big enough to taste the goodness. You won't find crazy doughnuts with faces or doughnuts that look like blunts but what you will find is just good old school great tasting doughnuts. I guess they have some interesting hours of operation so maybe find out first if your making the drive. read more

Welp, I didn't think it was possible... Ahem, pardon me--admitted donut snob here--and now for a quick story (I'll get to Rolling Pin in a moment). Growing up, I was spoiled with living within a bike ride of what was the greatest donut shop ever known to humankind. Is this hyperbole on my part? Maybe. Is it the fact that the taste of that particular shop's donuts crafted what a "proper" donut should taste like in my young mind? Probably. Either way, Donuts+ reigned supreme in my donut loving heart for the past 30+ years. I never thought any place could measure up or even come close to taking the crown that Donuts+ wore for it's decades long dynasty. That is until... ROLLING. FREAKING. PIN. Wow. What's funny about this is that this is my second time going. I don't think it quite hit me the first time. It wasn't the cool location with outside seating, the quintessential and vibey aesthetic, or even the super dope merch (which is quite random for a donut shop, but I'm here for it!)... it is--as it should be--the donuts themselves. The maple bar I just enjoyed was every bit of perfection. Soft but dense dough with ever so slight crispness. Perfectly distributed maple icing--not too thick or too thin. Not overpowering in the sweet department. The icing to cake ratio was A1! I literally said out loud several times while eating (by myself mind you), "Wow!". Unreal. I never thought I'd be writing such a long review for a single donut. You must understand that I do not take the dethroning of Donuts+ lightly though. The 11 o'clock hour is the sweet spot when it comes to scoring all the favorites: Chocolate Chip Roll is my ultimate pick with thick chocolate glaze and soft airy dough rolled around dark cocoa filling; husband's fav is the blueberry cake and it's one of the first to sell out. The good: Rolling Pin Donuts has me rolling around in happiness! This place is open very late! There are very few donut shops that open until midnight like this place does! They also have outdoor seating and dining areas! I got an apple fritter cronut, a custard filled cronut and a regular donut with crumbs on the outside (not sure the name). The custard filled donut was my absolutely favorite. The outside was so flakey, crunchy and delicious. I loved all of the layers and complexity of the texture. I also liked that it wasn't sticky sweet. I've had cronuts at the birthplace of cronuts in NYC before and this was exceeded in taste and quality! They donut mess around! The worker here was friendly as well. The bad: I got 2 donuts and 4 cronuts for $18.50 so it is a little bit on the more expensive side. However, the donuts are well worth the price! Do not hesitate to try this place! You can see and point to the donuts you want through the glass but it'd be nice if the donuts were labeled right where the donuts were rather than faraway on their menu where I couldn't quite see the images of which donut matched with which name. I also had a lady who was standing directly in front of the window of donuts so I couldn't see everything and couldn't point correctly to the ones I wanted. We normally don't visit Rolling Pins because we are big fans of Krispy Kreme and Dunkin, but one evening after dinner we stopped by because it was convenient. They put all of our 4 donuts in one bag and it messed up each donuts frosting. I think they should use boxes or individually package each donut to let it keep its original form. It saddens me to write this review. I've been going to Rolling Pin since it was called Donna Lee doughnuts I believe. I've been three times in the last six months. Each time I was very disappointed. At 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM choices were very limited. Seems odd to me. The taste and texture has changed and it's not for the better. A little too sweet and a little too dry. One of my biggest problems is with the service. It seems to be under new ownership and the new people are... not friendly and pay little attention to what you're ordering. Myself and most people in line ahead of me had to repeat our orders multiple times. Sad to see a Camarillo staple hit the wall so hard. Edited and add after Owner Ivan O. Replied to my review. As a business owner one might look into ways to improve to avoid reviews like mine. You instead reply in an arrogant and snarky fashion which is absolutely your first amendment right, but that smug arrogance is EXACTLY the vibe you and your employees put out. Two stars overall for the donuts and service. Was down to visit relatives and the nephew wanted Rolling Pin after dinner and we were nearby. He and his friends are regulars. We made our way through the line and placed our orders of the humongous chocolate chip donuts. Cashier said that they weren't ready but in the 15 seconds it took us to make another choice the chocolate chip were ready! We asked that they be put into bags separate from our other items. Well the cashier put the donuts ON the bags and not in them. We asked why and he said they were still hot. We told him we can't drive home this way and he was going to charge us more for boxes! A three star deduction for the poor, rude, hostile, non communication. Plenty of other choices in town to frequent. read more

I was super excited to finally visit their new establishment in Ventura. It was a Saturday morning around 9:00am. I ordered my black coffee and a half dozen donuts. I couldn't wait to get into the car and take my first bite with a sip of my coffee. i selected the maple cake donut took my first bite and it was cold an my first thought was this is a day old donut or they just took out of the refrigerator. Needless to say I will not be going back. I did notice that the employee took the donut off of the tall rack that was free standing. Not out of the case the donuts were in.
