If you have any dietary allergies or restrictions, this is not the place for you. I'm taking that factor out of my rating. It is a hidden gem in the cellar with a 70's wooden bar feel. I felt like I was time traveling. They have the football game on during Sundays, which is a pleasant change of pace from the sports bars. Their happy hour menu is well priced. I eat vegan and I'm fully aware that I'm kind of annoying when I go out so I usually prepare. I asked for recommendations and asked if maybe I could make a meal out of sides or something. She suggested a potato. They unfortunately burnt the potato and told me that I could not have a potato. She suggested calamari - haha. I ended up paying $18 for plain noodles and grilled veggies. Not a problem at all, but I would make sure that you eat ahead and save yourself the hassle. I wish they'd have just one veggie friendly dish. My friend got a lemonade and she kept refilling it. Turns out, they charge $3 per lemonade. I found it odd that it wasn't explained that its not free refills. Not a problem but when you have 4 lemonades - that just became a $12 drink to supplement the $12 cocktail. She also didn't put the burger in on happy hour - so make sure to check your receipts. read more

I met a coworker here for happy hour. He recommended it, and boy am I glad he did! We sat at the bar to enjoy their happy hour menu. Per usual, I ordered Rosé. Rosé all day! We started with the Bacon Wrapped Jalapeños. Theses babies were everything I dreamed of. Spicy jalapeños with melted Asiago cheese hugged by crispy bacon. I also had a side of roasted Brussel Sprouts to make sure I get my veggies in for the day. Up next, Carnitas Tacos. These tacos came with a side of pico de gallo, limes and were topped with fresh cilantro. Yum! I couldn't leave without trying the Spinach Dip. The chips were warm. The dip was gooey and cheesy. And the Chorizo took this dip to a WHOLE other level. After such a successful happy hour experience, I will definitely be back for dinner. read more

Rokerij was short staffed so the wait for drink and food orders was overly long. We understood and made the most of it by catching up with each other but after almost 25 minutes one of us got up to say something. We were hungry! And our drinks had run empty. The onion rings were as amazing as always. But it was an hour and a half before we were asked about ordering dinner. My friends and husband all liked their orders a lot, Carbonara with bacon wrapped shrimp, Pasta Heidi and Duck Rellenos. My Seafood Linguini was swimming in oil and the shrimp were overdone, over spiced and rubbery but the linguini was perfectly cooked. This isn't on the restaurant but our booth neighbors were so loud that we couldn't hear the music let alone each other. We laughed about it but that was a bit of a damper on an extra long evening too. A perfect cappuccino and a strange crème brûlée finished our evening. Rokerij had started to empty out and the staff was kind as we lingered a bit after our loud neighbors left so that we could enjoy a little conversation at a normal volume. They were having an off night but I enjoy the Rokerij very much and will go again. read more

My boyfriend made a reservation here for my birthday. There was only 6 of us but once we showed up, we were told they didn't have room for us and sent us to the restaurant next to them. Weird why they wouldn't tell us they didn't have room ahead of time. Then the place next door sat us outside and that could've been super nice but there was no lighting but these tiny lights that didn't help. The waitress came out after 10 minutes and told us that a table of 22 just sat so it might take a while for our order to come out. Like... no, we sat before them. They shouldn't be affecting our service. We took that as a sign to leave. That wasn't a fun birthday experience. I was so disappointed me and a couple of friends went for dinner because an out-of-state friend was in town we met there for drinks and food. We noticed when we sat at the booth near the bar that one of our friends mentioned that she felt she was getting bitten on her legs we looked under the table didn't see anything when we got home next day we had a bunch of bedbug bites on our legs lower back's. They need to clean out that place this is Disgusting. We called to let them know and they said that they Couldn't tell if it was from there but we all are from separate households even one is from out of state how can we all had gotten bitten and not be at that place. Food 5 stars / Service 3 stars (Read Below) Rokerij is part of the Richardson's/ Dicks Hideaway Family - I've loved and been too both Richardsons and Dicks hideaway several times and always excited for my next visit. Rokerij is located right off 16th street - reminder additional parking around back. The restaurant appears to be an old brick home updated and converted super cute. Upon walking inside immediately in front of you is the bar to left and seating to right with huge fire place. The restaurant decor reminds me of a dark cigar type with dark colors and low lighting. Today brought me with for Happy Hour with a party of over 20 Ladies - celebrating Ladies empowerment and leadership. It was a brief Happy Hour - today I ordered one of my favorite Wines - La Crema Chardonnay it's not an expensive wine but oddly so refreshing and one of my favorites. From the Menu - Ordered the Chipotle Ribs that were absolutely amazing - the meat literally feel off the bone the spices and seasoning was perfect. Service - Now here comes the tricky part, today was a large group - so upon seating I asked the server if we were able to split checks individually she politely said sadly I'm only able to do checks by table. Immediately I knew issues would arise, as no one carries cash anymore. At my table we were able to figure out check in a timely manner using cards and cash - but saw other tables were struggling and the poor server was trying to stay as positive as she could. While I'm not sure if this was a rule for that day - or a usual rule not to split checks. But this manner usually does not benefit the server - immediately I felt bad for the server with a party over 20. Now I didn't talk to the Manager - but someone mentioned they did, she was informed that they tried to accommodate us with extended Happy Hour pricing and tables. Myself nor my table was aware of extended Happy Hour pricing and thankful they had seating. Because I love this place - this one time issue will not dictate my future visits. We were held hostage for over 2 hours. First, when you pull up there is no regular parking, so you HAVE to do valet. That wasn't really a problem just confusing but the problem we found later on is that a LOT of people go in the wrong door trying to find the Rokerij side of the restaurant. The valet offers zero direction and although it's not their job to do that it would stop everyone from going to the bottom bar area looking around wondering if they're in the right spot and waiting for someone to take the time and either explain it or seat you. There are two restaurant names on this building and one name is over head of the left entrance and the other on the right which leads you downstairs in the wrong entrance. It was very dark going down the stairs at the very end even with the low lighting provided. Once we got inside the wrong door and got the attention of the female bar tender, we realized it wasn't just the bar that smelled of heavy liquor. She got our name for reservation and went upstairs to the correct area where the hostess confirmed us and we were still seated in the bar cave downstairs. Same bartender came to give us water and tell us that the cocktail menu is on the board or the wine list was on the table until we stopped her from walking away to ask for the soft drinks we knew we'd want. about ten minutes later a really nice bartender (we didn't catch his name) stopped to ask if we needed anything or wanted appetizers. We ordered our meals rather and he said that they work together down there so its not like one waiter to a table type of thing. THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT! So, one hour and 15 minutes after being seated (one hour and 5 minutes after ordering our entree's) we finally stopped the original bartender as she walked by again and again to ask if there was an eta. She just said hang on and ran over to the screen to type things in and I am not sure if it was our order or not but we were already over it by that time. about ten minutes later the food arrives and with the exception of how perfectly timed the steak was cooked the rest was not very good. We did try and make the best of it though. The female bartender tried to explain that we were seated at 6pm but it takes time to get the order but what she didn't know is we ordered ten minutes in. We asked for a box and the male bartender quickly had that taken care of and remembered the to go salad without a reminder at the end. We decided to order a dessert to share since we had time to digest for a while after the meals waiting. We regretted it though because what we thought would be a simple put the cake on a plate with some berries and sauce was not how the timeframe had in mind. The male bartender ran up the stairs and got it moving though. We still let a 30% tip but my husband really wanted to make sure that the mail bartender got 100% of that. We didn't know how to make that happen but the tip was for him! My husband and I love to try new restaurants and experiences regularly. Just about every weekend we try somewhere new but there are some that we repeat visit if they are always good. I made this reservation on OpenTable app as I have many others. If it's on Open Table, its usually a win from our experiences so far. I read reviews to help me decide if I want to go somewhere but it doesn't make my decision for me unless its just terrible. I would say we would give it a second chance to go through the correct entrance but the menu wasn't something id go back for even if it was a perfect dining experience. Loved this place. Seem to be more of a bar for the true locals. The bartender manages the music, which is perfect as it allows him to read the audience. The outdoor seating at Rokerij/Richardson's is a little oasis. Such a cool spot in uptown Phoenix. What impressed me most was the portion size, wow! I ordered the pork mole which was excellent. My sister ordered a pasta dish with duck which was great. Her fiancée ordered a sampler platter which was amazing. Probably enough food to feed us all. We all brought food home which was a win. Not sure what the difference is between Rokerij and Richardson's but will give Richardson's a try soon. read more

We had heard this was a great place so decided to go here for Father's Day Brunch. We had a reservation for 1:30 and arrived a few minutes early. After standing at the host stand for 7 minutes, a waitress comes by and says someone will be right with you. Twelve minutes later, someone finally comes by and asks what we need............So we are finally seated and wait another 10 minutes before somebody comes by for drink orders and we also order an appetizer. Twenty minutes later, our appetizer arrives and one iced tea. The rest of our drinks show up five minutes later and we also ask for napkins and silverware for our appetizer. Another 7-8 minutes later, my husband gets up from the table to run somebody down to get table service. We then order our entrees and receive them after at least 30 minutes. Our daughter had ordered an appetizer for her entree and requested it be served at the same time as the rest of the entrees. My daughter's order didn't show up. My husband had to again get up from the table to run somebody down as nobody came to check on us after we received our food. Her appetizer (entree) arrived 20 minutes later and they just dropped it in front of her and took off. Needless to say, we were appalled at the lack of service and the food wasn't that good either! Shortly after my daughter received her food, the ticket was dropped off and the waiter didn't say a thing so I just looked at the check and placed my CC in the folder. He came back, picked it up, ran it and dropped it off without saying a word like thanks for your patience, thanks for coming in................ I have been coming here for years and every time it's always amazing, except this last time that's why this review is 4 stars other than 5. The food was once again amazing except for one thing. I ordered cheese chilli rellenos asked the server if their green sauce has any meat in it cause I'm a vegetarian, the server responds no. So I order my plate and everything was going well till I dig into my second Chili and there is meat in it. I was pretty much full at this point so I box it up for my partner so he can eat it later. So we just moved back to the valley. I used to love this place soooo much so I couldn't waite to get back. The food lived up to my expectations. However the service was by far almost the worst we have ever had. The server made up his mind that because we had a child our table we weren't going to be a good check and even after we order some of the most expensive things on the menu and wine the service only got a little better. He was much more interested in the other tables and gave us very little attention even not pouring our wine or refilling our drinks. This was one of our most disappointing dining experiences. We had reservations for 7:00, and were seated approximately thirty minutes late. We are understanding, and realize in a small establishment there might be a delay in seating. No one ever apologized for the wait, or even acknowledged that we were seated half an hour late. Then we were provided with underwhelming service, and waited for ten minutes to be greeted by our server, and an additional twenty for our drinks to arrive. It went downhill from there. We had a second set of salads arrive after we finished our first, a drink removed from the table before it was emptied, and when we requested boxes it took two attempts for them to show up. We saw our waitress multiple times at the table across from us, but she neglected to turn around and see how we were. I requested to see a manager before we left, but Mario never arrived before we had to leave. Overall it was a terrible experience, the one thing that was a plus was our food. This will have been the 4th time we've eaten at Rokerij over the past few years as the food and service has always been just as good as Dicks Hideaway but it's been a place where you get a bit more dressed up if you wish without feeling out of place. Considering the service we had last night, it will be a long time before we frequent this establishment again. I would think a server would usually greet you within the first fifteen to twenty minutes but we had nothing. Half tempted to walk 59' to go to Richardson's at this point, but we stayed hoping for the best. Our decision was wrong as our server tended to us maybe 3 times the entire evening so we we were passed off to another server who actually seemed to care about his job. Food was marginal, service by our "server" horrible. Honestly will never be back there but will enjoy the laid back atmosphere and great service at Dicks. We arrived at the Rokerij for our friend's wedding reception. Upon arrival we were informed that they couldn't accommodate the reservation made for the private dining. Our friends booked the private dining weeks in advance and confirmed the reservation the day before. This was a special day for my friends as they were celebrating their wedding. Luckily the wonderful people at The Henry on Camelback stepped up and provided a private dining room for the reception. Went for a happy hour on Sat night and was able to enjoy the downstairs area for the World Series. Very intimate atmosphere and service. We opted to share the tenderloin with Brie toasts, bacon wrapped shrimp and and quesadilla du jour. It was the perfect amount of apps for 4 people to share- then each couple shared an entree. HH is 3-6pm for food and open-6pm for drinks with reverse HH 9pm-close. Most drinks are $6. Can't wait to come back again! read more

This place is amazing!!! My wife and I have been going here for a long time. You cant beat the service (up top where the kitchen is). They have a basement portion of the restaurant which is very romantic but we will never go down there because of the same server/bar tender who doesnt want a 2 top sitting at a 4 top. This place seems to have gone down hill. I called over a week ahead for a Saturday night reservation for me and some out of town guests. At that time, I specifically asked for one of the tables downstairs by the fireplace and was told that would not be a problem. A week later we showed up on time and was told our table was ready upstairs. I asked about a downstairs table and was told they were all taken, but I could wait for one. Irritated but hungry, I agreed to take one of the tables directly across from the very noisy kitchen. It took a good amount of time for our waitress to come take our drink order and another good amount of time to deliver the drinks. Then after another wait, she came to take our order. We were seated underneath the chalkboard that shows the specials (which do not appear on the menu), but our waitress did not go over those with us at all. The salads came out quickly and were delicious. Then there was another long wait for the food. Long enough that the waitress came by to say our food should be out in 7-8 minutes. Fifteen minutes later, two of our four entrées arrived. A few minutes later someone who was not our waitress was carrying around another of our entrées, but didn't know which table to take it to. He did return to our table shortly after and told us the final entrée would be right out. After another 5 minutes or so, it finally arrived. However, that last entrée, the top sirloin, was not cooked as requested. Rather than send it back and wait even longer, my friend just ate what she could. Luckily there was enough food to satisfy everyone and most of it was delicious. I have always thought of Rokerij as a "special" dining experience. Was unfortunately disappointed in our dining experience here. The menu has a good mix of Southwestern food, with some European dishes like schnitzel thrown into the menu. There is also a separate menu on the chalkboard which includes steak and seafood. I had the sea bass with roasted cauliflower and tried some rack of lamb with Brussels sprouts. The portion of food was good, but when I received my food my first thought was "This is it? I paid $39 for this?" The food looked like it was dumped on my plate with no special thought on plating and was simply breaded fish and cauliflower. Now this is fine if I'm getting an informal casual meal but for the price a little panache or maybe more elements in the dish would be nice so I feel like I'm eating something that looks better and more varied than what I could eat at home. The sea bass was breaded and crusted with pine nuts, and covered in a sweet sauce. I couldn't remember what the sauce consisted of and it tasted too generically sweet for me. It needed some acid to balance out the flavor and I used a lemon wedge on an iced tea glass to squeeze some juice on the fish which made it taste a lot better. The cauliflower was well prepared and had some nice caramelization along the edges from roasting. I tried some lamb too ($39) which was perfectly medium rare, but could use just a touch more seasoning. It had a smoky flavor which was nice. Since we were the lone table in the corner next to the bar, our waiter was actually the bartender. He did a good job though helping the bar patrons while serving and refilling our drinks. Note that sodas are by the bottle but iced tea has unlimited refills. Overall while I thought the food was OK, it was very overpriced for what you get. Also note that the parking here seems to be strictly valet (Although complimentary). I do love the atmosphere here though, with the dark wood, the dim lighting, excellent music (A mix of artists from Santana to Beck), and the lush, comfortable seating. P.S. For those that are wondering (I definitely was before I came here!) it's pronounced ro-ker-ee and it means "smokehouse" in Dutch. read more

This a one of my boss's favorite places to take special guest. Located in the same parking lot right next to the new Richardson's. There is a really cool patio that connects the two restaurants with an outdoor Bar. Instantly puts you in the party zone and makes you feel right at home. This is the first time my wife and I have been to the Rokerij and it was truly a fun and happy experience. Been to Dick's Hideaway and the older Richardsons many times in the past. The selection on the menu here has several of the same tasty good SW options with some really nice EuroAmerican surprises. Love the way you can instantly smell the aroma of the Pecan wood coming from the sizzling grill. Pecan gives the food some very nice flavor and that extra kick. Everything here and his other restaurants always taste great and leave you satisfied. Upstairs and downstairs are both the Rokerij now. Upstairs is quite a bit larger with a nice bar and a larger seating area. Downstairs has a top secret elevator or you can take the stairs. It is smaller and offers food and drinks as well. Could even be a nifty bomb shelter in a parallel universe. We started off with some Prime Rib Sliders and Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. My boss and his lovely wife ordered the New Mexican Platter and the Salt and Pepper Encrusted Prime Rib. My wife order the awesome Chimayo Chicken and yours truly went with the tasty Grilled Swordfish Special. Chocolate Flan with a 1/2 shot of Grand Marnier completed the trifecta. Really love the way they layer the flavors. The atmosphere of this place and friendly servers are also a delight. We arrived early and were able to get a large table by their cozy rustic fireplace. Rokerij is no Jokerij! Not much new can be written about this amazing spot, so I will try and be brief. Went to the basement bar for Friday happy hour, and it was love at first sight. Cozy, dark, and welcoming- this is a place you can get lost in. Grabbed a seat at the bar, and were warmly greeted. Ordered margaritas and some small plates, they were both outstanding. Tried numerous small plates, and each one was delicious and hit the spot. If you like margaritas, you will be a happy camper. Also try the stuffed mushrooms, they are amazing. After leaving my new favorite place, we went to the Taste of Scottsdale, and it was surprising that none of the food there was HALF as good as what Rokerij provided. After a few samples, my group gave up, as it wasn't fair to our stomachs to put average food with amazing Rokerij food. All in all, not a bad problem to have. read more

I called to make a reservation a few days before the date and was told they could accommodate our group at upstairs, but not down unless we wanted to wait until 9:00. Alright then... 7:00 upstairs worked! We were celebrating our engagement and our friends' being pregnant, and we had the perfect booth; kind of a half circle shape. Lindsay was our waitress and took good care of us. The atmosphere is dark but warm and cozy... perfect to walk into on a cold night! We decided to start with a few of the small plates to start... (both guys in our group are big eaters). They let me choose one of them and I chose the stuffed mushrooms - they are stuffed with crab meat and were delicious. They also chose the spareribs (which I tasted and were quite tasty) and the bacon wrapped scallops. For entrees, Jared and I took advantage of the $36 special which included our choice of meet, 2 salads, and 2 side items. I chose the entrecote and probably would not choose that again. It's a bone-in ribeye and was way too fatty... we enjoyed our spinach and Rokerij salads and our sides of broccoli and asparagus. I probably could've just had the small plates and salad and been just fine. We took home leftover meat for Minnie, so she was a happy dog that night! Instead of ordering dessert, we walked next-door to DQ - can't go wrong with that! Overall, I'd say our experience was 3.5 but I'll round up for now because Lindsay was a great waitress and we had fun with our friends. I'll overlook the fact that one of the bussers spilled steak juice on me when delivering our entree... I won't rush back but I'll keep Rokerij in mind for future gatherings with small groups. read more

When pressed for that *one* place to visit in Phoenix, there is only Rokerij. Somehow - magically - the space is designed to feel intimate. Cozy. But the space meanders around. (The booths have room to seat parties of four to six, depending on the side of the fireplace you're gazing at.) Dates would be impressed. As would a business partner or your girlfriends. The hushed tones of the dark room encourage whispered conversation. The food and wine has always been impeccably delivered. The Oysters - just stop. Whatever you're doing can wait. Go. I promise you, your palate will enjoy the menu. I have a few photos up of sliders, scallops wrapped in bacon and artichoke dip. But that is an injustice. Rokerij offers a robust menu. Happy hour is quite generous. If you're not sure pay attention: Happy hour is *every day* until 6pm. (Reverse HH is 10pm to midnight.) Alas, the true secrets of happy hour are best revealed by calling in. They change often and may not make it to Facebook or their website in time. Visit often and you'll know the inside scoop! Currently... Wonderful, hearty glasses of wine are poured for 1/2 the normal price. All appetizers are $2-3 off a plate. But you *must* sit at the bar. The bartenders are well versed in their product knowledge. The table staff are stunning. Visiting here is like visiting dear, close friends. Special note: The space is ADA accessible. We have been going to this place for years. The food is excellent and thus the two stars are for the food. We don't go there because it's cheap. One thing is clear, service is dead. Seating is cramped and uncomfortable. Parking is a pain, and even when not busy, the staff has bad attitude. Sad. read more

As a regular of richardsons, dicks, and rokerj since 2011 we just had the worst meal/service ever at Rokerj. Part of my food was literally cold on the Benedicts, the ham practically unchewable. It took unbelievable long for the food to come out. Then they forget my 2yr old sons French fries. Literally all he wanted and his was forgotten and then came out last and over done. The waitress said they look really well done do u want me to have them redo them?!? I literally have a 2yr old who just waited and hour and a half for French fries redoing them is not an option at this point. The biggest thing is we always go for mimosa and Bloody Mary. No one has ever asked for type of vodka at all 3 restaurants so we said titos which is pretty well/cheap selection. Get the bill and titos is a $10 up charge!!!! So $17 blood Mary!!! Outrageous! We come for the $7 bloodys not $17!!! I asked the waitress about it and she said it was upgrade and I pointed out not once did she ever say that during multiple drinks. She had nothing to say other than sorry. So prob any extra $50+ of vodka alone on our tables bill. I'm going to take a hard look of never doing rokerji again (only reason we did it was bc of the bigger booths for our party) after this 2hr plus horrible experience. read more
