I spotted Rusty Cup Cafe while driving down the main street and decided to stop in--and I'm so glad I did. They had Wi-Fi, which allowed me to get some work done, and I ordered an espresso while I was there. It was excellent! The shots were clearly pulled perfectly, with no bitter or overly acidic taste. The espresso was incredibly smooth, rich, and flavorful. It was so good that as soon as I finished it, I ordered another one. The space is fairly small, so seating is limited, but the quality of the coffee more than makes up for it. The atmosphere has an industrial-modern, no-frills feel. I'd have to say that bite for bite the fish itself might be the best in the county by a hair, but the full entree lags just behind Battery 245 and Ship Out in terms of fry / coleslaw quality, aesthetics, and overall value. But neither of those places are on the Astoria waterfront with million dollar views, so that's to be expected. If you're craving fish and chips with a view in downtown Astoria, don't hesitate to order them here, the fish was phenomenal.

This restaurant seemed to have a nice selection and sides to choose from, especially for my…read moredaughter who is vegetarian and somewhat picky about food. When we got our menus and the waiter came, I asked about the sides that we can order because those were on the menu. The waiter said, well, we can pretty much make anything a side. That wasn't very helpful. We took a while to decide. When we came back, he pushed us to order something, so we did. I order a salad with salmon. My daughter order veggie kabobs and her best friend ordered a loaded potato. The food 30 minutes to get out. My daughter friend started drinking her soda and it had no carbonation. When the food came, my salmon was cold - it was precooked and just taken out of the fridge straight to the salad. The loaded potato wasn't fully cooked. The kabobs - some of the potatoes were super mushy, while others were fully cooked through and they tasted like lemons. Very tart. Some of the veggies weren't cooked - it was like eating raw veggies - this meal costed $30. When I mentioned this to the waiter, he had a very confused faced. He then stated, I thought I pressed the carbonation button with the soda... huh.. I've worked in the restaurant industry for years. I know that's not how that works. The waiter took off the drinks from the bill - $6.00 and nothing else was said or done about the undercooked food. Very disappointed all around and will never go back again after that.

Good stuff is really good, 75% of the rest of the places we've tried are meh or downright not worth finishing. We were fortunate to stumble upon Tackle Box on a walk to Labor Temple for a morning shot. The vegetarian Bean Dinghy was filling, favorable, crunchy in the right spots (the seasoned potatoes were like mini-tater tots), garlicky (but not too garlicky), and the tortilla was pan-friend just enough to get some color and crisp. Will definitely make this our go-to breakfast stop in Astoria!! Oh, and Mitty was hella friendly!

So I'm from Los Angeles and So Cal has no shortage of places to get a breakfast burrito and different types. Wagyu steak, pastrami, basterma, pork belly on top of the basics sausage, bacon or ham. From the basics to the exotic. I would say most are eggs, potatoes, some bacon or sausage, and cheese. It's an American breakfast in a tortilla. I happened to be in Astoria for work and was a little early for a meeting. As I stood there outside City Hall, I was watching people come and pick up an order from this place. Hmm must be good. Mitty, the burrito expert himself, would even run out to hand over an order once in a while. Must be good and good service. Do I really want a breakfast burrito on my only day in Astoria? Well client told me they are really good. After my early morning meeting it was too early for lunch so decided on trying out the burrito. Reading the menu, it dawned on me that this burrito is made with a little more culinary skill than what I was expecting. Had a chance to talk to Mitty and he's exactly what you want from a proprietor: knowledgeable, really into his craft, and confident in his products. Wow wow wow. It was waaaaaay better than a lot of others I've had. First, it's not just scrambled egg in a tortilla. It's flavorful ham, with cheese and eggs infused with garlic aioli. Not dry at all. Delicious from the first bite to last. Prices are what you'd expect at a food cart in my opinion. The burrito is big enough to share but it's so good you may want to just eat it all by yourself. The ambience in this little corner was great since it's an early morning product, it wasn't crowded yet. But it fits in perfectly. Tackle Box Burrito needs to be a known spot for a truly awesome burrito. It was one of the best things I ate in Oregon for the week. What a surprise find. If you are in Astoria, go find Mitty and get one of the best burritos you will ever have.
