Our server was exceptionally sweet and pleasant, and gave us a stellar wine recommendation to pair with our octopus, skate, and sablefish. The creative chef knows how to build beautiful dishes that make the ingredients shine in unique, upscale presentations without culinary silliness like foams or dry ice. The servers know the menu inside and out, capably address all questions, and make wise recommendations. We tried pressed stone fruit with house made cottage cheese, arugula, heirloom tomato, and sherry vinegar. A taste of late summer's bounty! We loved chicken breast with local mushrooms, white beans, and chicken jus. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. We went wild for ling cod with sweet corn and heirloom tomato over sweet corn purée. The brown butter crème brûlée with fresh peaches was a lovely ending. The wine-by-the glass selection is high quality. Large enough to have really great options but small enough for the size of dining room. A fabulous place to go for a top-notch meal without pretension. After hearing glowing recommendations, I made a reservation at Daphne while visiting Astoria -- and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Tucked into a cozy downtown space, the vibe here is minimal but warm, with just the right balance of modern and welcoming. I started with the smoked brandade croquettes, which were beautifully crisp on the outside and creamy, smoky perfection on the inside. The braised leeks and leek vinaigrette they were served with added an unexpected depth that really brought the dish together. For my main, I had the pan-roasted cod, served over a bed of asparagus with delicate floral touches and a bright green purée. Everything on the plate felt intentional -- seasonal, fresh, and incredibly well-balanced. The skin on the cod was perfectly crisped, and the fish flaked apart effortlessly. Dessert was a lovely off-menu surprise:Oregon strawberries paired with ice cream and tiny edible flowers. It was one of those simple-but-elevated finales that perfectly wrapped up the meal. We have dined at Daphne twice. We consider 5 criteria when evaluating a restaurant, in this order. 1. Noise. 2. Food 3. Service 4. Ambiance 5. Seating Here is our opinion on Daphne. NOISE (rate 1) Loud music and no sound proofing so it is a noisy fine dining experience. On our first visit I would have left but my wife wanted to try the food. The second visit was a little less miserable. FOOD (rate 3.5) The two seafood entrees were 5's. The lamb pasta a 4. The pork rated a 1 as it was 60% inedible fat. Both soups were 5's. The rhubarb upside down cake rates a 1 as it was tough and really not edible. The flan, with peaches, was a 5. SERVICE (rate 2) Once seated the service was good. On our second visit we arrived 15 minutes early, at 6:15, yet the host refused to seat us. This restaurant has 35 seats and only 12 were filled. Our table was ten feet away yet we had to wait by the door. She said the kitchen was too small to serve us until 6:30. We finally were seating. Within a half hour the restaurant was near capacity. Why could the kitchen not handle 14 customers at 6:30, yet was able to serve 30 at 7:00pm? That did not make sense. AMBIANCE (rate 3) Simple. Nothing special. SEATING (rate 4) There was some padding on the seats and the chairs were reasonably comfortable. Tables were fairly well placed to each other, not too close. read more

Great destination restaurant in quaint downtown Astoria. Hubby and I took a chance on a reservation here at the recommendation of a new friend in Portland. We were so pleased with the whole experience! The menu changes weekly so the chef can leverage what's in season. The cucumbers with nasturtiums (our appetizer) had just enough salt and pickling in the components to make a "salad" into an elevated taste experience. We shared the strip loin tartare as well as the marinated "cooked" strip loin as our mains- both were deliciously different takes on a great cut of Painted Hills beef. For dessert, we ordered the peaches and nectarines appetizer. Fruits were juicy and super fresh, and the cheese added the perfect tang. The staff were so warm and welcoming and helped make this a perfect start to our weekend getaway. We hope to be back soon! read more

We had an amazing meal at Daphne. The service was good but could have been a bit more informative with the tasting & pairing menu. We were a party of 8 who had some amazing wines at the seafood and wine festival earlier in the day. The pairings that were offered with the delicious tasting menu however did not align with the stars. They were out of several of the wines but did not communicate that to our party but instead served something that they thought might go with each course. I by all means am not a wine snob, but I was seated at the table with very educated wine enthusiast with fantastic palette's. If you have the wrong wine notes with certain foods it can totally change the flavors good or bad. Well we will just say they were not all good. The pairings were an additional $50 per person on top of the $85 for the tasting menu experience. It would have been nice to be informed that they were out of certain wines. read more

We came to Daphne on a recommendation from a Cannery Pier staffer, expecting a special experience. The tasting menu was beautifully plated, with highlights like the duck rillettes and playful salmon tartlet presentation. But the meal went downhill. The duck egg dish came without a knife to cut the raab--odd and impractical. Both the halibut and pork were noticeably overcooked. I chalked it up to my palate until I overheard another diner complaining. Dessert was the high point--an outstanding chocolate pot de crème. Dinner cost ~$200 with a mandatory 20% service charge--yet they still left a line for an additional tip, which felt pushy. Worst of all: both my wife and I were sick with diarrhea for the rest of the night. We recovered quickly, but it put a damper on our anniversary. Sadly, I can't recommend Daphne. A big miss from a place I really wanted to love. read more

Amazing! Our December 6 dinner was simply divine! The halibut with mussels,chanterelles & artichokes, smoked oyster stew, winter squash bread pudding with chanterelle cream, baby onions duck jus miso & duck confit & the warm whey bread were all incredible! And the special squash ice cream blew us away! The small space feels spacious and our table for six was roomy and perfect. Our experience with our server Erica was great and we felt an immediate connection with her. Her service was attentive and she made us feel welcome to be there. Well done you fabulous you!! Daphne continues to impress. Amazingly, there was no line out the door -- and frankly, there should be. This place delivers an exceptional fine dining experience that feels both refined and welcoming. We started with the purple kohlrabi salad -- a bright, elegant combination of hazelnut, Bergkäse, and apple vinegar. The Heritage pork entrée was hearty and rich, paired with molasses pork and beans, and bread-and-butter zucchini that was surprisingly crave-worthy. The aged duck was the standout: perfectly cooked, served with Chinese broccoli and an unforgettable sauce made from duck liver and fermented Hood strawberry. A couple of well-paired wines elevated the meal even further. JC Somers, 'La Revanche' Chardonnay 2022, Willamette Valley, Oregon and Gamine Wines, 'Equus Vineyard' Grenache 2023, Columbia Valley WA. Another amazing meal at Daphne! This is our second time passing through Astoria, and it just keeps getting better. The food was inspring. We had tuna and black cod were perfect, and the apple salad was light but so satisfying. But let's talk about that upside-down cake... I'm not kidding when I say it's worth the trip alone. I could've eaten a whole cake by myself it's that good It's rich, comforting, and the perfect balance of sweet and warm. I'm already dreaming that It will be on the menu again next time we pass though. I also have to shout out the chefs for their perfect use of salt in every dish. Both of them really know how to bring out the best flavors with just the right amount of seasoning. It's not something you always notice, but it truly makes the dishes pop and elevates everything. Welp... the service was great but the Chef thinks that everyone should enjoy food only his way ... even though the customer eats it and pays for it! We were there on 1/17/25. The waitress was phenomenal, I am so sorry that I didn't get her name, but I know that she used to work at Buoy. She gave excellent recommendations and was extremely patient as my sister-in-law and I tried to decide which wine we wanted for dinner after several samples. All 4 of our meals were phenomenal. I had black cod, my husband seared tuna, and my in-laws had chicken stuffed with black truffles and pork with a chutney. The buttermilk bread with salted brown butter was out of this world. My brother in law really enjoyed the kolirabi soup. I know the menu changes, so I am looking forward to new local offerings. read more

This was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Everything from the bread, the main course and the desserts were all top-notch. There were four of us and each of us ordered one of the entrées so we split everything four ways and we came away , so happy with our meals. The only suggestion I would be to have next time is to serve French press coffee, which would be stronger than the coffee they served after dinner. Our food was delicious!! We ordered the bread, blueberry salad, and the soft cheese with peaches to start, it was all incredible. I highly recommend the cheese and peaches. For our main we had the cannelloni with summer squash, which had a delicious Parmesan foam on it. It was the perfect balance of a light, but filling meal. This restaurant is a HORRIBLE destination restaurant! My in-laws where in town & the restaurant we wanted to dine at was closed so we decided to try Daphne's since it was close. We were seated & given our menus with explanations of 2 items they didn't have. There are only like 6 main course menu items & they were out of one? We were the 2nd table of the night. Tried to order 2 different wines,....they had neither. My husband & I both had the Koji marinated striploin*, lobster mushrooms, broccoli, rosemary for $51.00 each. & the in-laws both had the Chicken stuffed with creamed ?? & Blackened Eggplant. After a 30 min wait,...we received our meals. All meals were luke warm at best. We were told "HE" will NOT cook the beef over med rare. Which was perfect for us. Our steaks were nowhere near med rare. more like med. They were barely light pink. And no flavor at all. like eating cardboard. When the waitress asked us how our first bites were, my father in law asked if the meals were supposed to be luke warm & she said No,...should be piping hot. She asked the rest of the table & we all said they were not hot. She did not say "oh I am so sorry", she just asked if we would like them reheated. He did, but our striploin would have been Well Done if reheated, so we declined. The inlaws only eat half of their meals,..& declined to have to go boxes. That our to say what the food was like. These people are WAY to pretentious! The restaurant itself was ok,....on a side street with a view of the bus station. I will tell EVERYONE I know in this area to steer clear of Daphne's. To pay 203.00 for a meal as disappointing as this one is ridiculous. And "HE" needs to go check with other COOKS, on what what med rare actually is. The food was either too salty (even the butter had big salt crystals on it), too tough (the pork chops were small and tough and had a 1/2 inch roll of fat around the meat), and the crepes had no flavor at all, and were burnt around the edges. However, out server was very professional and offered to replace the tasteless crepe with another entre, but nothing else seemed interesting. The chef was on the floor talking to guests, not in the kitchen actually cooking anything. I saw the person who was in the kitchen and she looked like she was struggling. It took 40 minutes for the overly expensive, salty, tough, or tasteless food to arrive. The ambience was OK, but I had to move to the other side of our table because the sun hit the parked bus across the street and shined it into my eyes. It was our anniversary celebration and we had high hopes for a nice dinner in a new place in our town, but were disappointed. We will not be back. read more

I've had the absolute pleasure of experiencing the tasty and beautiful food at Daphne on multiple occasions since they opened several months ago. It quickly became my go-to place for a nice meal with family or date night. The quality of every dish on the ever-changing menu has been consistently outstanding and innovative, clearly taking advantage of the best of what's locally available. Recently I particularly enjoyed the summer squash soup followed by the cannelloni with summer squash--two entirely different and equally excellent dishes that showcased the ingredient in ways you'd never expect. I've never before been excited about squash enough to write about it! The dessert of rhubarb upside down cake was the perfect end to the meal. Daphne's attentive, friendly, and subtle service and unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere round out what has quickly become Astoria's finest dining experience.
