She checked on us regularly to ensure everything was perfect without ever being intrusive, making us feel genuinely well cared for. We started with the mussels and Brussels sprouts, and both appetizers were outstanding. Every entrée at our table was equally delicious, and everyone left thoroughly impressed with their meal. We stopped in for brunch during one of the Sunday market days. We shared eggs florentine and a couple of Mimosas. The food was prepared perfectly and was delicious as were the drinks. The service was a little awkward and slow. Which was unexpected as fewer than half the tables were occupied. It could be that they were short staffed that day. It was fine as long as you're willing to relax and enjoy the wait. We sat by the windows and had plenty of time to watch the locals and tourists come and go from the market. The place itself is nice. Very clean and even upscale. I'd definetly come back and try more things off the menu. Quite nice old fashioned indoor design. Good for a date night Short rib's quite decent amount but a bit dry. Has a nice char flavor. Goes well with the mashed potatoes but wish it has some sauce. Also should've ordered some side veggies. Quite a lot of meat without veggie Orange crème brûlée is a great idea, however, the orange flavor is quite artificial and overly sweet. Since my last review I've been back here maybe two or three times, and I even understand it got a new owner at some point since then, but Carruthers is just not for me..... Even if the owner is new, I will go as far as suspecting the same Chef is still there because the handwriting on the food never changed: inconsistent as in my first review. Today I had the crab cakes appetizer, which was overseasoned and had no crab taste. The pork shank was better although served only luke warm and a little too dry (more sauce or au just would have been nice). I will still give max points to the bartender; the black Manhattan was as good as the first time. They have some kind of dishwasher in the bar area that makes a diesel engine noise vibrating the ground you sit on.... making the dining experience similar to sitting in the middle of a construction zone. Service started out fine but then faded out a bit; a good thing they don't add an automatic service charge to the check like some places in Seattle. read more

I have absolutely fallen in love with this gem of a restaurant! We celebrated our anniversary dinner here, and the food was truly amazing. January sounded like a slower season for them, which showed since we were the only diners that evening. Honestly, it made the experience even more special. The waiter, who was also the bartender, was incredible. Unfortunately, we did not catch his name, but he was working on January 10th and did a fantastic job. He was attentive, welcoming, and genuinely great at what he does. On to the food. We started with the fresh baked bread and Brussels sprouts. I never thought Brussels sprouts could steal the show, but these were packed with flavor and absolutely delicious. I ordered the linguine, and my boyfriend had the filet with crab and hollandaise sauce. Both dishes were outstanding and truly next level. The vibe of the restaurant was perfect. Very chic and sophisticated, which felt ideal for celebrating an anniversary. We actually loved that it was quiet because it felt like all the attention was on us. We wanted to like Carruthers, but it was just ok especially for the price. The steak Oscar was cooked appropriately, and the potatoes and asparagus were good, but the minuscule amount of crab added nothing, and the steak lacked flavor. The smoked salmon linguine was not what we expected. The salmon had a subtle smoke flavor, and we were surprised by the number of bones. Stopped at Curruthers Restaurant mid-week seeking fine dining -- and they delivered. Started with a Black Manhattan (a rare find on most menus) and a tasty non‑alcoholic cocktail. We had crab cakes and two orders of the Northwest halibut (when in Rome) -- the halibut was perfectly cooked, served with creamy mashed potatoes and beautifully seasoned Brussels sprouts. Crab cakes were excellent too. Cocktails, food, and service were all great; the service team seemed a bit understaffed but our waiter/bartender hustled and kept everything on point. Wow!!! I've eaten at Carruthers many times. The cocktails are the very definition of craft and the menu is thoughtful . However last night and this morning...they have outdone themselves. My husband and I arrived and sat at the bar as we usually do. The bartender Joey met us with our usual old-fashion cocktail starters. Last night special was a whole lobster which came with asparagus and mashed potatoes. I ordered the lobster and my husband ordered the ribeye from the menu. Per usual the cocktails were amazing but the flavor and the execution on the ribeye was top-tier. The Brussel sprouts which came with the ribeye were stellar. Seasoned to perfection. After dinner we had Cadillac margs for dessert and again, crafted to perfection. This morning, we decided to try brunch out for the first time and holy hell. This place should be much busier than what it is for brunch. It is absolutely fantastic. The honey, maple pancakes and the hollandaise on the Benedict's were absolutely fantastic. It was warm and cozy with a candle burning in the background, which set the mood. Thank you so much for a wonderful dinner experience both times!! We went on a Thursday night (7/9). We like to eat early, so we got there about 5:15. We were greeted promptly by a very friendly fellow. The restaurant was empty, so maybe that is why we experienced such great service! The restaurant is absolutely lovely inside. We really enjoyed the 1980's music playing (not too loud!). We actually were able to take advantage of their happy hour (until 6). We started with steamers clams and a cup of chowder. The clams were delish! I would have loved to slurp up the broth! My husband (who lived on the East coast for about 50 yrs) said it was the BEST chowder he had ever eaten! The menu is delightful! It had very unique dishes. I wanted to try at least 5 of them! I settled on the pork Osso Busso on top of polenta with fresh zucchini. It was melt in your mouth delish! I love polenta, but I'm sure you could change it for mashed potatoes. Even the zucchini was good! Just a quick grill so it was still a little crisp, the way we like it. My husband ordered the lamb encrusted with pistachios. Another excellent choice! It was perfectly cooked. Tender and moist! Both dishes were NOT overly salted (as is often the case!). Our waitress was friendly but not obtrusive. I'd like to start by saying that they're trying. Maybe a little too hard. Big sign hanging outside saying under new management or ownership or something like that so I don't know if this all is new or what. The building itself is beautiful. The food and drink just ok. I appreciated the allergy information on the menu - - saves me from having to ask a million questions - - but I feel like they are trying to be fancy. The staff were very nice but a little too much. We sat at the bar for drinks and a bite. Service was good and the ambiance/décor was lovely. Our cocktails were solid, including a very nice espresso martini. Sadly, our one food dish was terrible. We ordered the Thai chicken wings, which were not Thai at all but instead were plain fried chicken served with three uninspired dipping sauces. I have removed stars from my initial review because Carruthers has slipped over the last couple years that we have been dining here. I called 6 weeks ago to make a reservation for our 49th anniversary and when we arrived, there was no record of my reservation. That is the second time we have experienced this oversight since they no longer accept Open Table reservations. I strongly suggest they fix their customer service glitches as it does affect their future business. This was a very slow Thursday night so it was no problem getting seated immediately 6:00PM at a cozy corner window table. Our waiter, Zack was friendly and attentive. We both started with drinks and fresh side salads, My black Manhattan cocktail was perfect and her fluted champagne over the top. I ordered the Cioppino and to be honest, It was filled with seafood but lackluster in taste and have enjoyed better here in the past. One of the shellfish hadn't opened and It wasn't served hot or with the zesty flavor I expect from this traditional dish. The tiny toasted bread pieces which I always have used to sop up the leftover broth, were more like small croutons and not at all suitable to be anything more than a garnish. For dessert, we ordered the decadent chocolate cake with a cream filling, much like memories of childhood Hostess cupcakes that may have been on the shelf for a while. Very dry without ice cream. After this disappointing experience, I am unsure if we will return to Carruthers as there are many other good dining options on the North coast. read more

Presentation and feel was nice.... Service was good too! Unfortunately, the meal was not done correctly. If you like eggs Benedict, go elsewhere. My friend had the steak and I guess he enjoyed that; however, I had a different experience with their smoked salmon eggs Benedict. Normally I go traditional but that would have been a let down too based on the lack of flavor from the hollandaise sauce and the eggs that were incorrectly cooked..... I've never had a messed up poached egg until today but it was terrible. They nuked the crap out of it.... Tasted like it was cooked in a microwave and the smoked salmon tasted like I was eating wood chips..... it was just an unfortunate meal on my trip out of town. Last year, hubby and I fell in love with the Caesar Salad topped with sous vide chicken (OMG so good). Visited last night and something changed. Thinking it was a change in Chef. The salads were WAY overdressed. There were thick slices of Parmesan clumped in the dressing rather than super fine shavings as before. The chicken was no longer tender. We also had the fish and chips which had little flavor. The finesse is sadly missing. The server was friendly and attentive. Finally tried Carruthers for breakfast and it did not disappoint. One of, if not THE best breakfast's we've had in Astoria in years! Service was outstanding and the food all tasted scratch made. The ambiance is upscale but prices are on par with most of the other breakfast spots in town. I had the Praire Starter and the wife had the Traditional Eggs Benedict and we would both order them again. Hopefully they keep serving breakfast because Astoria definitely needs more breakfast options. read more

Great ambiance - you walk in and feel like you're stepping into the roaring 20's, complete with a full flapper outfit on display. The service was friendly and attentive without hovering. We came for lunch on a Sunday during off-season and both had salads - the housemate Caesar is delicious! Good cocktails and strong coffee. I have wanted to dine at this restaurant for years. Finally, we had the opportunity, but I am sad to report that it was somewhat of a let down. The ambiance and service were delightful. The food was not. We started with wine and a cocktail. Both were just fine. Where we messed up, was ordering food. For an appetizer, we ordered "stuffed mushrooms". While the mushrooms were warm, they were not stuffed, nor thoroughly cooked. Like so not cooked that the mushrooms were legitimately firm and crisp, and the parmesan sprinked on top did not melt. No sauce to dip the crusty darn things in either. I later realized, I've had these breaded mushrooms from somewhere before. Yes, they come in bulk from the US Chef store as frozen breaded, not stuffed mushrooms. As a meal, I ordered the crab. It was ok. The potatoes and coleslaw that came with the crab were not ok. The potatoes were so overcooked and dry that I chose to leave them in the bowl they came in. Next, we need to talk about the coleslaw. It was plain shredded cabbage. No dressing. Just a heap of raw shredded cabbage from a bag, dropped on a plate. I'd recommend just going in for drinks at their beautiful bar and lovely servers. Eat somewhere else until they sort out the kitchen. read more

Stopped by hoping to have an enjoyable dinner. Was a bit confused by the ambience with the mannequins and multicolored up lighting. The staff were friendly and somewhat efficient. Decided to give the shrimp cocktail try...which was a big no. The shrimp was lukewarm and was served with a salsa, the two did not pair together well. Crab cakes were the only highlight of our meal, as our entrees were not much to write home about. Our food did not taste fresh. We were delighted to discover this downtown gem. The restaurant is classic, spacious and comfortable. The food was so fresh and delicious. We both had a Caesar salad - my husband had his with smoked salmon that was moist, slightly sweet and tender. He got the entree size and could barely finish it. I had the half size and a fantastic shrimp cocktail with a gazpacho-like sauce. Very good wine list too. We shared a bourbon chocolate cake that had a ganache , whipped cream filling and was so rich we took half of it home. Great service as well. Highly recommended. read more

We looked on Yelp for dinner recommendations and found this place. Quiet on a weekday December night, we loved everything we had. The items we had were: 1. Crostini. 2. Ribeye - came with mashed potatoes; fresh cauliflower, carrots and bell pepper; and a to die for bourbon sauce. Best steak ever. 3. Moroccan curry - My friend didn't say a word as he inhaled this dish. Rice, chickpeas, raisins, celery, garlic, cilantro and lemon in a tasty coconut milk sauce. 4. Chocolate hazelnut cheesecake - With caramel sauce. Divine. Great service by our host/server. Clean bathroom. Gorgeous dining area. Definitely coming back when in town again. read more

It was my 31st birthday and my fiancé and I were ready to propose right after we ate dinner so it was very special. I love the old-school vibes. We got to sit right next to the window. We ordered for our appetizer; clams and they were really good in the garlic sauce. I could not stop eating it. I wish there was more although it is a bit pricey it's totally worth it. They weren't too busy since it was a Saturday afternoon. There was some sort of festival going on so it was hard to find parking, but that's typical in the city. They treated us super good. Came in with my husband for our anniversary. Special occasion or not I didn't expect any special service or anything but there were barely any people in the whole place and we were completely ignored most of our visit. Never got a refill on my soda but my husband was offered another beer? I get it soda refills don't run up a tab but I am 8 months pregnant and a soda refill sounded great. The lobster and crab risotto was just bad. My husband liked his fish and chips but literally spit out his coleslaw, and I swear we are no food snobs. I wish I was warned about the food and service here as we would have loved to have had dinner somewhere else. read more

This restaurant is convenient for an early Sunday dinner. We have a great waiter who always waits on us. Service is very good. Drinks are improved. Food is good enough to bring us back every Sunday we are in town. In my opinion there has been considerable improvement. We will continue to have our Sunday dinner there. read more

I'm not sure that it ever made it on here. Didn't go back for over 2 and a half years. Carruthers is located in an historic, high-ceiling building, which is definitely worth a visit. Our party of four stopped in for drinks and were impressed by the quality and creativity. I enjoyed a meal here after a six hour drive, with colleagues I have not seen in over two years. The atmosphere was inviting and warm, and this was a perfect place to start catching up after a long time of social distancing. I started with a plate of steamer clams, which were served in a larger bowl with three toasted slices of crostini, with a lemon wedge, in flavorful broth. The crostini was rather tough even after dipping in broth so next time I may ask for just the bread, sans toasting. The broth was delicious to the point where I made sure to finish some off with a spoon after the clams and crostini were gone. For entrée, I enjoyed the half Caesar salad with steak medallions and the beef was cooked to perfection, salad well seasoned, and even had three longer pieces of anchovies on it. The crème brûlée was the perfect dessert to finish off a meal here and the brûléed crust was so delightful to break. I was pleasantly surprised to see the small micro grains of actual vanilla line the dish below the vanilla custard, I can't remember last time I saw that. Wishing there was a garnish or something to make this staple's gentle flavor stand out more, like a spear of mint or Thai basil, or a berry. read more

What a great lunch experience we had at Carruthers! We were on the road to Seattle to have our last meal while on vacation. We stumbled upon some great Yelp reviews and thought we would give it a try! I'm so glad we did and Thrilled they had room for us at the bar. Kaitlin was our hostess and bartender/sever extraordinaire! She made us feel right at home and guided us through the menu with excellent suggestions. We shared the Avocado Fried Rice with added shrimp and the Bistec Bruschetta and both were so delicious and flavorful. We even had a scrumptious creme brûlée desert which was a perfect ending to a great meal. Kudos to the chef and Kaitlin for a great meal to end our vacation! Not realizing that very little places are open in Astoria over then holidays, we were glad to find Carruthers open for our Christmas Eve dinner. I'm vegan, but wife is not, so it's always great to find a place that has options for both of us. My wife had the Ribeye with garlic mash potatoes, roasted winter veggies and a butternut puree. She ordered the ribeye medium and when she received it, the steak was more mid-rare instead. She loved it though, even rarer than she prefers it was very good and had almost no unrendered fat. I ate the Chickpea Masala with Jasmine rice. I was surprised at how sweet the dish was, that's not my usual cup of tea. It was an amazing dish though! The chickpeas were perfectly cooked, slightly toothy but not mush. The flavors danced between mostly savory with some sweet notes that played on my tongue. The rice was a little dry for my preference but in all a worthy dish. For dessert my wife tried the peach creme brule that she adored and I had a vegan hazelnut cheesecake. The cheesecake was a little grainy, but that happens with cashew based cheeses so I wasn't complaining. This was a fantastic last date night before we moved out of the area! read more
