I heard about Riverside Fish and Chips on Yelp when I read the previous reviews and was looking forward to trying it. But, be aware it is very hard to find. I literally accidentally stumbled on it when exploring the area. Just remember it is behind the restaurant called "Buttercup". The fish and chips were absolutely amazing. I was looking for a place to grab some fish and chips while exploring a new place on the coast for me. Found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. As others have said, it's a food truck tucked behind a building on a gravel lot. The setting is really nice overlooking a calm river (saw kayakers out on an adventure). Tables are well spaced for the current times. I had a two piece order that came in about 10 minutes. Great amount of batter on the cod and well cooked. The fries are battered and a little greasy in my opinion, but very tasty. the cole slaw had craisins I think and while some people will obviously not like that, I thought it was pretty awesome. Overall, a pretty decent meal and I enjoyed the view. Now, if they could offer a fantastic clam chowder too, I'd be in heaven. read more

I discovered this gem by accident in June of 2022. Staying nearby for two weeks I ended up having lunch here most every day (good thing I run and ride to keep in shape, or I'd pack on the pounds with these treats!). Anyhoo... Took friends and family to Riverside ever since. Son In Law agrees the fish is the best he's had (he works in the food/drink biz, mostly on the tavern side, so has tasted many fish&chip offerings). Almost one year later I took my Fiancé and the taste and quality are still there. If you're in the area it's a must-try. Fresh Cod caught locally. The thinnest and tastiest of batter (just enough crunch, not bready or chewy). Hot and moist inside. The fries/chips are perfectly cooked with just enough spice. And the tartar sauce is understated - instead of drowning out the (potentially poor) taste of the fish, it instead highlights the excellent fish. During the summer you can sit outside and enjoy the lovely view. During the colder months sit under the heaters on the covered patio. Look for the signs on Hwy. 101 in the little town of Nehalem. Worth the wait!!! Absolutely look forward to their opening each year. The cod is always consistently great. Beautiful view and the staff is working like a well oiled machine churning out probably hundreds of orders per day. I'm a tartar sauce snob and they have a good one. ( dill,thank you) The coleslaw is also good and not just the same you get everywhere else ( love those celery seeds) As to the negative reviews, good food takes time.. the 5 person group in front of you is just as hungry as you are. We were told by locals that we should check out this place while in Nehalem. It was a busy Saturday afternoon on a sunny day, so naturally they were slammed. There was a long line and we were told the wait for food was 40 min. Normally I would have left, but our group decided to wait. When all was said and done it was well over an hour. The staff were super grumpy, no smiles, no thanks so much for waiting, no appreciation for customers. A little customer service goes a long way. We finally got our food and were sorely disappointed. The fish was good, but not hot. The coleslaw came in a tiny plastic cup, and we each got about 15 fries. Our whole group was really disappointed. I think that gives me a good basis of comparison, and there's a lot to like about Riverside Fish & Chips. First, it's not just a clever name. The line got a bit wonky for social distancing, but they're doing the best they can. They serve the traditional cod fish and chips. It was good, but I don't love cod fish and chips. That's a me problem, not a them problem. It was excellently prepared, and the pieces were big. I got a 3 piece and it was too much food. Let it be known: Riverside Fish & Chips have the best fries of any fish and chips spot I've ever visited! They're perfectly crisped and seasoned, and OMG delicious! My vegetarian friend got a grilled cheese, and it's clear that it wasn't just an afterthought. It too was huge and he said it was outstanding. You have some options for cheeses, but I can't recall what they are. The only negative? Raisins in the cole slaw. What? I know it's not the same as raisins in potato salad, but that seems to me like some nonsense. I liked this spot. It did great business and I can see why. We were fortunate to randomly stop at Riverside Fish & Chips as we departed our wedding to head to the beach. Very much in search of a restroom, we stopped here and are SO GLAD we did! The gentleman in the antiques store said it was "the best fish and chips in the state!" which admittedly I dismissed as hyperbole. After 5 days on the coast and more than our share of fish and chips, this place REALLY IS the BEST FISH AND CHIPS IN THE STATE! Don't be fooled or scared to try this little truck in a clearing by the river. Fresh cod are caught daily just behind the property. The breading is flaky (not soggy or thick) and the fish is fall apart moist and delicious! Bonus, you can buy beer! This might be our very favorite find in Oregon. Sitting at the picnic table with my new husband, staring at the river, eating the best food we had at any price point during our two week stay, and chatting it up with the locals is literally the best thing any girl could ask for. After months of being stuck inside, my family and I drove to the Oregon coast from Park City UT for a little change of scenery with our 5 month old baby (born in the middle of the pandemic). We almost exclusively made meals at the house rental during our stay but we read reviews of this spot and made a point to give it a try. This fish and chips is one of the best I've ever had. The fish is so fresh and cooked perfectly with a light batter. It comes with seasoned fries, really tasty coleslaw and some homemade ketchup and tartar sauce. We requested lemon as well. The food came out in about 10-15 minutes, piping hot, and really really delicious. We ordered a buoy beer co. Czech Pilsner to go with it, I highly recommend. We came here during lunch on a rainy cold Thursday, so it wasn't very busy, but I could see this place being very busy on a weekend summer day. read more

Great fish and chips! Perfectly battered and great balance of batter and fish. Fries perfectly crispy! Tried for the first time this weekend while camping with my parents. They had already discovered it previously and said that we had to try it, so we did. The next day after we packed up from camping, we had raved all night to their friends about how good this fish and chips were, so on our way out of town we were going to take them there. When we got there I parked and sent my boyfriend to get six orders of the three piece fish to go. The people in front of him ordered, he had been waiting just as long as them....there was almost 15 minutes left before closing, 10 for sure, and my boyfriend said that he needed six orders and the guy said no we can't do that we're closing, that would've probably been over 100 bucks. I mean, they could've taken one more order, if the line was like crazy ridiculous I would understand that you would have to cut it off somewhere, and somebody would not be happy, but my boyfriend was the last one, so the fact that he stood there and waited just to be told no. I think the guy could've told him to begin with. If I were a business even if I needed to stay a few minutes over for $100 order, from a food cart none the less, I would've definitely done that because it's a small town and I'm sure that they really rely on word of mouth. Plus, just as a human being if I would've been the worker and known that a guy waited, and that he was the last one I would've taken care of him because it just seems like the right thing to do. Anyway, so it was a bummer to have to go back and tell my parents and their friends that they were closed and didn't want to take our order before closing time. That to me speaks more than how the food was. It was hot and I'm sure the guy just wanted to go home regardless of how it made the business look. So I googled some places and we ended up at the Big Wave Café in Manzanita about 5 minutes away. Now the prices were about double there, but I can tell you it was worth it, the fish and chips (halibut) and the fries were just as good as the other place if not better and they also had the best homemade tartar sauce I've ever had anywhere! Also came w a nice salad! Plus being able to sit in air conditioning made it worth it anyway. Was worth double the money for sure! Food was hot and tasted good and very nice view of the river. I have only one suggestion. They should have pager devices when your order is ready. I am very hard of hearing,even with hearing devices. They yell out your name and it is difficult to hear ( even for my daughter with good hearing) as you are outside. We accidentally took someone order( they ordered the same as us) fortunately we only picked it up and the customer were okay with us handing it to them. The cart workers were a bit annoyed with us but they are certainly making enough sales that they should include that in their budget. read more

After a yelp search for some good fish and chips we found Riverside. The staff were great, friendly and being our first time we're quick to give a rundown on the menu. The gent at the register suggested the fish tacos and my better half took the advise. She was not disappointed! I had a 2pc Cod basket. Add to that 2 bottles of water and a 15% tip and we were at $34 and change for a food truck lunch. The 2pc cod came with fries and coleslaw, fish tacos came with the slaw but no fries. The French fries were crispy, seasoned and quite delicious while the coleslaw as a solid mix of vinegar/mayo dressing and was really delicious but after about 6 bites it was gone, the portion size for the coleslaw is on the smaller size IMHO. As for the cod, a bit dry and overcooked. The filets are thin and mine were about the size of a playing card, not that big! I took the first with a strong soaking in malt vinegar and the second with the house made tartar sauce. The tartar sauce is actually outstanding, but need up dipping some fries in it after the fish was gone. Do to the price and the dry cod due to being a bit overcooked I want with the "less than five stars rating". Would have given 3.5 if I could. Looking around the place was very crowded which means this is the only place nearby to get fish and chips OR the other places suffer in comparison. Having said all that, I would go back for the fish tacos. read more

Slightly non-traditional, the slaw is lighter than most and contained dried cranberries. It was the perfect counterpoint to the fried fish. Next to the cart are several picnic tables and some stand alone chairs all next to the river. The table I sat at had a shade which was great because it was an unseasonably hot day.
