Pricey, yet well worth it. Brother... this place smacked my fish n chips game into a new perspective. They play ball. Prices were high (I spent $20 on a 3 piece cod) albeit the quality softened that blow. I've already spread the word. This gem of a spot needs a visit. Right along the river as the name implies. Batter was right where it needed to be. Oh do I wish I could go back. Some fish n chip spots mess with the formula. Couldn't wait to try this after reading all the reviews. We came all the way down from Astoria. Maybe we hit them on an off day but the food just didn't live up to the hype for us. The location was great, just the kind of setup we love, right on the river, a very lively. There was also a stuffed potato food truck there as well. We come to the Oregon coast every summer, and can't remember the halibut ever being so expensive, imaging there's a good reason behind this because we've seen it elsewhere. We ordered the 3 piece with fries and coleslaw. The sides were very good, the fish not. I like a light batter, but this was see thru and fell right off the fish, which was dry. Had heard about this place from Jamie Hale at the Oregonian/OregonLive. The fish and chips were fresh and were on par with Jamie's review when he called it the best fish and chips on the North Oregon Coast. One of my favorite places to take visitors to the area. If you hit it just right on a sunny day, there isn't much better than having superior fish-and-chips on a picnic bench overlooking the Nehalem River. They serve both cod and halibut and you have the option of one, two, or three pieces. Personally, I think two is plenty for a personal meal and I get three pieces if I'm sharing with Mr. K. The baskets come with crispy fries and their version of coleslaw with a poppy seed dressing. It is a food cart behind the buildings on Highway 101, and this collection of carts and restaurants have seating along the river (with and without umbrellas) and also a covered seating area behind the buildings. I've eaten here during all of the seasons and the only negative can be their popularity. You may have a significant wait on busy days. Also, because the location and tendency to flood, there have been times when the cart is unexpectedly closed (they actually move the cart to higher ground on occasion), but such is the challenge of dining on the Oregon coast. read more

Lunch for 5 today. This place gets busy fast so we got there right before they opened at 11:30. Pretty small menu but what they have is excellent. The 3 pc baskets are enough for 2 people to share. We tried both the cod and halibut. The cod was a lot oilier, but it's personal taste whether it's worth paying nearly double for the halibut. Our order was ready in about 10 minutes, but we were the first ones to order. By 11:44 the place was packed and those folks waited longer, so I get how some reviewers might not be happy with their wait times. Very pleasant outdoor seating with a mini donut and Mexican food cart to provide options. The fries are incredible, so crispy. The fish is pretty wonderful too. A friend asked me to go kayaking in Nehalem. She saw something in a paper that was introducing a food cart in town. "We will go paddling on the river then grab some fish and chips." Sounds like fun and tasty so we left early on Saturday morning. We splashed in and played for a few hours. After getting out of the water we walked to the food cart restaurant on the bank of Nehalem river. When we walked up there was a sign "Waiting Time One Hour". Ok! It's a three day warm winter weekend so many people headed to the coast. We ordered beer and chatted away the time. This is a good food cart, outside seating on the river on the sunny day. The cart is associated.with the roadside store in the downtown. The back of the store has a covered deck with tables in case it rains. Prices are high, for three piece halibut with a dab of coleslaw and overcook cold french fries was $32. My friend had the three-piece cod for $26ish. My friend really wanted to try this place and she enjoyed the cod. I, on the other hand, have had better with Moore sloth and fries at other places on the coast., But you're here, right. You're on a mini vacation, just enjoy the warm winter day and nice food. read more

I think this was my third or fourth time trying to go to this spot. It's a food cart so beware that they may or may not be open - that's just how food carts are tho. Anyway, I was super glad that they were open yesterday and I finally got to try it. They warned that the wait was going to be an hour, and it was, but I didn't have anything else going on so I waited. It was really great! I liked the batter on the halibut, which was nice and crunchy but not too thick. The battered fries were excellent as well as the slaw. The portion size was about right for $15, pretty good value I'd say, but if I went again I think I'd opt for an extra piece of fish. If you have the time and inclination I'd definitely recommend it. You can sit outside by the river while you wait. Also there is inside seating and restrooms on the deck nearby- that wasn't immediately obvious to me. read more

The bbq pulled pork grilled cheese had a lot of flavor, but it was overly salty and greasy. And you couldn't taste much of the pork itself. The fries had a nice spicy blend seasoning, but were also a bit too salty. The cod was ok, but the batter wasn't that crispy and slid off the fish as it was eaten. Cooked to order the cod had a nice crispy breading and tasted very fresh. Fries were crisp and salty. The slaw had plenty of dressing but was not washed over the crispy cabbage. The addition of celery seeds and raisins was great too. Fish tacos had a solid corn tortilla that did not fall apart mid bite. A little pico de gallo would be great for those. Honestly, I must fully admit that after living for many years as a commercial fisherman in Alaska, I am a total seafood snob lol. I'm NOT easily impressed. The casual outdoor environment, situated right on the bank of the river, is simultaneously relaxing and fun. Enjoying a Halibut 2 piece for lunch, while watching the river flow to the sea is ALWAYS a good time! The fish has been cooked perfectly every time that my wife and I have eaten there, and have gotten to the point of always stopping in when we drive by...luckily our veterinarian is only two doors down lol! It's simple, quality food, with simple, quality service with a smile. Even on a busy afternoon, the staff do a great job of holding down the fort and getting the food out as fast as possible, without sacrificing any quality! The fella running the place was very friendly in a genuine sort of way. I felt like I had already known him for ages and was just paying a visit to a friend. It really got my belly rumbling. However, my fiance, the rightful recipient of the fish and chips; told me it was delicious with a mouthful of halibut. Unprompted. I heard the slaw here was very good. I ate the slaw that came with her order. The slaw is beyond "very good". This is a masterclass in slaw. Bright, fresh, crunchy, and flavorful. This is a mature and civilized slaw. I drank the slaw water at the bottom of the little cup when I was finished. This is embarassing to admit but I don't regret doing this. I would do it again. Encouraged by how delicious the slaw was, I stole a fry from my darling when she was not paying attention. It's not fair to compare a french fry to a bite of serious slaw. But compared to other fries I've had, this fry is a well regarded and seriously respectable fry. Even after steaming in the takeout box during the short drive, and cooling to near room temperature before I managed to steal one, this fry held its crunch. The fry was flavorful enough to stand quite well on its own without dipping. A very yummy fry. As I type this review I'm thinking about the best way to pilfer more fries before they're all gone.
